Application of thermoresponsive hydrogel/gold nanorods composites in the detection of diquat

Green in situ immobilisation of gold nanoparticles on bacterial nanocellulose membranes using Tannic acid and its detection of Fe3

Oxidative stress is one of the factors that promote melanogenesis. Trivalent iron ions play a key role in regulating the iron-catalysed oxidative stress response. A novel SERS flexible membrane sensor based on tannic acid with good sensitivity and uniformity was prepared by green in situ reduction of gold nanoparticles on bacterial cellulose membrane（BCM）with a simple and highly selective method to detect Fe3+. Under alkaline conditions, Fe3+ is adsorbed on the BCM-TA@Au NPs flexible membrane by tannic acid (TA) through chelation, thus enabling the detection of Fe3+. Furthermore, this simple detection system has a wide linear detection range and high sensitivity to effortlessly evaluate Fe3+ at concentrations up to 10-7 M. More importantly, the proposed SERS flexible substrate performed well in determining Fe3+ concentrations in B16 melanocytes, providing new insights into the factors affecting the melanin synthesis pathway and providing a potential biomarker for melanoma treatment.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering of a gold core-silver shell-sponge substrate for detection of thiram and diquat

Aiming at the difficulty of traditional pesticide sampling, a low-cost and convenient flexible surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) gold core-silver shell-sponge (Au-Ag-sponge) substrate was synthesized by chemical reduction. The SERS substrate consisted of Au-AgNPs and a melamine sponge. The sponge had a rich open pore structure, which could well "capture" Au-AgNPs, generating a large number of "hot spots". The SERS enhancement activity of the flexible substrate was characterized with rhodamine 6G (R6G) Raman probe molecules. The substrate showed good activity to 10-12 M rhodamine 6G with an enhancement factor (EF) of 7.72 × 106. Applying this substrate to the qualitative and quantitative detection of pesticide residues, the results showed that the Raman intensity was well related to the concentration of pesticide solution with the range of 0.1-10 mg L-1 of thiram and 1-10 mg L-1 of diquat. Furthermore, the substrate was analyzed by finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulation and the results were in good agreement with the experimental results. The reason for the difference in Raman signals of pesticide molecules on the same substrate was the different binding modes of Au-AgNPs on the sponge. Finally, we pointed out the advantages of flexible substrates in the field of pesticide residues, as well as future opportunities and challenges.

Plasmonic nanomaterials with responsive polymer hydrogels for sensing and actuation

Plasmonic nanomaterials have become an integral part of numerous technologies, where they provide important functionalities spanning from extraction and harvesting of light in thin film optical devices to probing of molecular species and their interactions on biochip surfaces. More recently, we witness increasing research efforts devoted to a new class of plasmonic nanomaterials that allow for on-demand tuning of their properties by combining metallic nanostructures and responsive hydrogels. This review addresses this recently emerged vibrant field, which holds potential to expand the spectrum of possible applications and deliver functions that cannot be achieved by separate research in each of the respective fields. It aims at providing an overview of key principles, design rules, and current implementations of both responsive hydrogels and metallic nanostructures. We discuss important aspects that capitalize on the combination of responsive polymer networks with plasmonic nanostructures to perform rapid mechanical actuation and actively controlled nanoscale confinement of light associated with resonant amplification of its intensity. The latest advances towards the implementation of such responsive plasmonic nanomaterials are presented, particularly covering the field of plasmonic biosensing that utilizes refractometric measurements as well as plasmon-enhanced optical spectroscopy readout, optically driven miniature soft actuators, and light-fueled micromachines operating in an environment resembling biological systems.

Facile Preparation and Dye Adsorption Performance of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/Molybdenum Disulfide Composite Hydrogels

Using N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and acrylic acid (AAc) as monomers, N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide (MBA) as a cross-linking agent, and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as functional particles, a P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogel was prepared by free radical polymerization initiated by ultraviolet light. The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy show that MoS2 has been successfully introduced into the P(NIPAM-co-AAc) system, and the obtained composite hydrogel has a porous network structure. Studies on the swelling property and dye adsorption performance show that the addition of MoS2 can increase the swelling ratio of P(NIPAM-co-AAc) hydrogels to a certain extent and can significantly improve the ability of the P(NIPAM-co-AAc) hydrogel to adsorb methylene blue (MB). The adsorption process of MB by the composite hydrogels conforms to the pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm adsorption models. The estimated equilibrium adsorption capacity (Q m) using the Langmuir isotherm model can reach 1258 mg/g, mainly due to the electrostatic interaction between the negatively charged groups -COO- and MoS2 particles on the network structure and the positively charged dye MB. The adsorption of MB by P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogels depends on the temperature during adsorption. Compared with room temperature, a high temperature of 40 °C above the poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) phase transition temperature (∼32 °C) leads to a decreased adsorption capacity of the P(NIPAM-co-AAc)/MoS2 composite hydrogel for MB due to the enhanced hydrophobic properties of the network structure and the decrease of the swelling ratio. The prepared hydrogel material can be used as a good adsorbent for dyes, which is promising in wastewater treatment.

Application of a thermo-sensitive imprinted SERS substrate to the rapid trace detection of ofloxacin

A novel composite (AgNPs-MIPs) was prepared by combining nano-silver particles with an ofloxacin (OFL) imprinted thermo-sensitive hydrogel. The thermo-sensitive optical properties of the composite were studied and it was used as a Raman substrate for the detection of ofloxacin. The results have shown that the position and intensity of the plasmon resonance absorption peak of the AgNPs-MIPs can be reversibly changed with the change of temperature, and the intensity of the ofloxacin Raman signal increases with the increase of temperature. Because the hydrogel combined Raman enhancement of silver nanoparticles, the selectivity of molecularly imprinted materials and the intelligent response of thermo-sensitive hydrogels, it can realize rapid, in situ, trace and selective detection of ofloxacin. Moreover, the detection limit can reach 10^-10 mol L^-1.

Electrostatic Self-Assembly of Ti3C2Tx MXene and Gold Nanorods as an Efficient Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering Platform for Reliable and High-Sensitivity Determination of Organic Pollutants

A reliable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate composed of two-dimensional (2D) MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) nanosheets and gold nanorods (AuNRs) is designed and fabricated for sensitive detection of organic pollutants. The AuNRs are uniformly distributed on the surface of the 2D MXene nanosheets because of the strong electrostatic interactions, forming abundant SERS hot spots. The MXene/AuNR SERS substrate exhibits high sensitivity and excellent reproducibility in the determination of common organic dyes such as rhodamine 6G, crystal violet, and malachite green. The detection limits are 1 × 10^-12, 1 × 10^-12, and 1 × 10^-10 M, and relative standard deviations determined from 13 areas on each sample are 18.1, 10.1, and 15.6%, respectively. In the determination of more complex organic pesticides and pollutants, the substrate also shows excellent sensitivity and quantitative detection, and the detection limits for thiram and diquat of 1 × 10^-10 and 1 × 10^-8 M, respectively, are much lower than the contaminant levels stipulated by the US Environmental Protection Agency. The MXene/AuNR composite constitutes an efficient SERS platform for reliable and high-sensitivity environmental analysis and food safety monitoring.

A novel thermometer-type hydrogel senor for glutathione detection

A thermometer-type visual sensor for glutathione (GSH) sensing was developed with stimulus-responsive fluorescent hydrogel which was obtained by using 5, 6-bicarboxylic fluorescein crossli`nked partly ammoniated polyacrylamide. Various experimental parameters such as the particle size of hydrogel, buffer solution and swelling time were optimized. It is accessible to measure the volume change of hydrogel with the sensor by reading the graduation on a pipette like thermometer with naked eye. The concentration of the GSH depended on the volume in a certain range as the signal. Satisfactory agreements between the sensor and HPLC results for atuomolan tablet assays indicated the capability of the thermometer-type sensors for the analysis of real samples. These findings proved the utility of stimulus-responsive, intelligent hydrogel and the suitability of thermometer-style visual sensor design for quantitative assays.

A Simple SERS-Based Trace Sensing Platform Enabled by AuNPs-Analyte/AuNPs Double-Decker Structure on Wax-Coated Hydrophobic Surface

In this work, a simple and versatile SERS sensing platform enabled by AuNPs-analyte/AuNPs double-decker structure on wax-coated hydrophobic surface was developed using a portable Raman spectrometer. Wax-coated silicon wafer served as a hydrophobic surface to induce both aggregation and concentration of aqueous phase AuNPs mixed with analyte of interest. After drying, another layer of AuNPs was drop-cast onto the layer of AuNPs-analyte on the substrate to form double-decker structure, thus introducing more “hot spots” to further enhance the Raman signal. To validate the sensing platform, methyl parathion (pesticide), and melamine (a nitrogen-enrich compound illegally added to food products to increase their apparent protein content) were employed as two model compounds for trace sensing demonstration. The as-fabricated sensor showed high reproducibility and sensitivity toward both methyl parathion and melamine detection with the limit of detection at the nanomolar and sub-nanomolar concentration level, respectively. In addition, remarkable recoveries for methyl parathion spiked into lake water samples were obtained, while reasonably good recoveries for melamine spiked into milk samples were achieved. These results demonstrate that the as-developed SERS sensing platform holds great promise in detecting trace amount of hazardous chemicals for food safety and environment protection.
