Abstract
Based on the π-metal interaction between silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and aromatic compounds, AgNPs were in-situ grown to melamine-formaldehyde (MF) aerogel for improving the extraction performance to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The AgNPs/MF aerogel was regulated through varing the concentration of reactants, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction. As a new extraction coating, the AgNPs/MF aerogel was coated to stainless-steel wires for in-tube solid-phase microextraction (IT-SPME). The extraction effects of MF aerogels before and after the modification of AgNPs were compared, and the AgNPs greatly improved the extraction ability for PAHs reaching to 166.4 %. Combining IT-SPME with high performance liquid chromatographic detection, an online analytical system was constructed. Furthermore, the sampling volume and rate, concentration of organic solvent, and desorption time were optimized factor by factor. The online analytical method with low detection limits (0.003-0.010 μg L-1) and efficient enrichment factors (1998-3237) for PAHs was established, which fastly detected trace level of PAHs in drinking and environmental water samples. Compared with other methods, the method was comparable or better in the detection limit and linear range, indicating prospective application of the AgNPs/MF aerogel for sample preparation.

Abstract
In this work, a nanocomposite structured magnetic metal-organic framework named as Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 was prepared via a simple hydrothermal approach. The as-mentioned nanocomposite was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) techniques. Using the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2 as a nanosorbent, an easy and highly effective approach was developed to preconcentrate nine organic UV filters before gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis. Different conditions influencing the extraction efficiency encompassing the sorbent amount, nature and volume of desorption solvent, desorption time, pH of the sample, and extraction time, were examined. Under the optimal experimental parameters, the Fe3O4@UiO-66-NH2-based magnetic solid phase extraction and GC-MS (MSPE-GC-MS) demonstrated linearity in the range of 0.03-1500 ng/L (R2 ≥ 0.9974) and the reproducibility, expressed as RSD, was ≤7.5%. The limits of detection ranged between 0.01 and 0.07 ng/L and limits of quantification were in the range of 0.03-0.4 ng/L. Finally, the suggested approach was satisfactorily utilized to determine nine organic UV filters in different water samples (analytical recoveries between 86.5% and 104.2%).

Abstract
In this work, a vortex-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction method, using an ionic liquid as the extracting solvent was developed, for the simultaneous analysis of three UV filters in different water samples. The extracting and dispersive solvents were selected in a univariate way. Then, the parameters such as the volume of the extracting and dispersive solvents, pH and ionic strength were evaluated using a full experimental design 24, followed by Doehlert matrix. The optimized method consisted of 50 μL of extracting solvent (1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate), 700 μL of dispersive solvent (acetonitrile) and pH of 4.5. When combined with high-performance liquid chromatography, the method limit of detection ranged from 0.3 to 0.6 μg L-1, enrichment factors between 81 and 101%, and the relative standard deviation between 5.8 and 10.0%. The developed method demonstrated effectiveness in concentrating UV filters in both river and seawater samples, being a simple and efficient option for this type of analysis.

Abstract
Rapidly and accurately detect the total nitrogen (TN) concentration is enormously important for surface water protection considering the critical role it plays in reflecting the eutrophication of surface water. However, traditional TN detection methods have to experience a tedious oxygen digestion process, which tremendously limits the detection speed of TN. To solve this problem, we propose a novel online rapid TN detection method. The transformations of nitrogenous substances during the oxidative digestion process are observed by using ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy and the concentration of TN can be predicted by only using the variation of spectrum in the early oxygen digestion process. To select the most informative variables hidden in the collected three-dimension spectrum, a new wavelength selection algorithm called spatial interval permutation combination population analysis (siPCPA) is proposed, which considers the spatial-temporal relationships among each variable in the spectrum. By using the real surface water samples collected from Houhu Lake, Changsha, China, the effectiveness of our proposed new detection and selection methods are verified and compared with other state-of-the-art methods. As a result, the practical application experiment shows that our methods can determine the concentration of TN in 5 min with a relative error of less than 5%.

Abstract
Taste and odor (T&O) compounds are important water pollutant, some of which are toxic. The relevant studies are all expand upon the well-known T&O compounds but for the unknown odors in smelling water. In this work, a method combining purge and trap with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (PT-GC/MS) and disperse solid-phase extraction with gas chromatograph (GC) was first proposed to detect T&O compounds in unknown odorous water accurately. Firstly, PT-GC/MS was used for a qualitative test on unknown odors in smelling water and determine the analytes. The hollow CoNi-layered double hydroxide (LDH) on graphene oxide (GO) was then used as a composite adsorbent to pretreat the water, in which the GO provided large specific surface, and the LDH worked as a confinement cavity to enhance capture and retention capacity for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). According to the properties of T&O compounds determined by PT-GC/MS in water, a corresponding GC method was established for accurately quantitative analysis. In this paper, five T&O compounds were detected simultaneously, including dimethyl sulfide, meistylene, N, N-dimethylbenzylamine, 2, 4-dimethylbenzaldehyde and 2, 4-di-tert-butylphenol. Extraction parameters were optimized, including ratio of desorption solvent, amount of adsorbent, pH value, etc. Under the optimal conditions, the detection limits for analysis were 1.14 μg/L to 3.07 mg/L. The satisfactory recoveries were 94-98%. Furthermore, two optimal determination outcomes of odor waters from different places support the practicability of the method, which is expected to be widely used in the detection of unknown odors in smelling water.

Abstract
The nature and fabrication of the fiber coatings with good adsorption capacity and selectivity play a decisive role in solid-phase microextraction (SPME). In this work, a facile strategy was proposed to fabricate a cobalt, phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped carbonaceous (Co-P-NC) coating on superelastic nitinol (NiTi) substrate as a binder-free fiber for SPME. In particular, direct electrochemical in situ growth of ZIF-67 crystals served as the N-containing carbon precursor and sacrificial template for subsequent controllable conversion of ZIF-67 into a novel porous Co-P-NC coating on the NiTi wire substrate via a phosphiding process in a N2 atmosphere. The obtained NiTi wire with the Co-P-NC coating (NiTi@Co-P-NC) was employed to investigate the adsorption of some representative aromatic analytes in water samples for the first time coupling with high-performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC/UV). The results proved that the resulting fiber showed superior adsorption selectivity for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Therefore, the key parameters were further examined for the adsorption and preconcentration of PAHs. Under the obtained conditions, linear chromatographic responses were achieved over the concentration ranges of 0.03-100 μg L-1 with the correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9980 to 0.9991. Limits of detection (LODs) were between 0.007 and 0.149 μg L-1 (S/N = 3). The developed SPME-HPLC/UV method was applied to selective preconcentration and sensitive determination of PAHs in water. Moreover, this fiber had good fiber preparation reproducibility and presented 120 adsorption and desorption cycles at the same time in practical SPME application.

Abstract
Oriented zinc oxide nanosheets (ZnONSs) were directly grown on pretreated nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) fiber substrates without a traditional seeding layer of ZnO by electrochemical deposition for the first time. The fiber coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Direct growth of ZnONSs on the NiTi fiber substrate was dependent on the type of zinc salt. The adsorption performance of the ZnONSs coatings was evaluated using representative aromatic compounds as model analytes together with high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The as-prepared fiber shows higher extraction capability for the selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than for ultraviolet filters in water samples, and better extraction selectivity for PAHs. For this purpose, the important experimental parameters were optimized for the extraction of PAHs. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves are linear in the range of 0.03-200 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999. Limits of detection ranged from 0.011 μg L-1 to 0.082 μg L-1. Intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the developed method with a single fiber ranged from 2.69% to 4.18% and from 4.44% to 5.40%, respectively. RSDs for the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility varied between 5.57% and 7.66%. The developed method was successfully applied for selective preconcentration and determination of trace PAHs in five real water samples. Relative recoveries varied from 84.5% to 104% with RSDs between 1.65% and 8.30%. Furthermore, the as-prepared fiber is highly stable.

Abstract
Polyimide (PI) microspheres assembled by nanosheets were used for bar adsorptive microextraction (BAμE) for the first time. The PI microsphere possessed self-organized hierarchical nanostructure, large specific surface area (170 m2/g) and good thermostability (up to 400 °C). The BAμE device was prepared by adhering the PI microspheres on a quartz bar with Kapton double sided tape. Trace nitroaromatic explosives in environmental waters were extracted by the BAμE device, desorbed by thermal desorption (TD), and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The reproducibility of five BAμE devices prepared in parallel was less than 13.0% (expressed as relative standard deviation, RSD). The BAμE device could stand up to 30 extraction/desorption cycles without decrease of extraction efficiency. The results of method validation showed that the BAμE-TD/GC-MS method possessed wide linearity (0.05-50 μg/L or 0.05-20 μg/L), high correlation coefficients (> 0.9987), good precision (RSDs < 11.8%), low detection limits (0.005-0.013 μg/L) and high enrichment factors (528-1410). Relative recoveries were in the range of 72.2-122.6% with RSDs between 0.1% and 10.5% for real water samples. These results proved that the proposed method was a good choice for determination of organic pollutants in water samples.

These microspheres were utilized as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for determination of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from foot odor coupling with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). SEM and TEM characterizations showed that as-prepared material was composed of 1D porous nanowires and presented a uniform coating on stainless-steel wire. The extraction of VFAs including propanoic acid, butyric acid, isobutanoic acid, isovaleric acid, hexanoic acid, and heptylic acid was carried out by headspace model after sampling from human foot using cotton wool strips. Following optimization of extraction parameters including extraction temperature and time and desorption temperature and time, the as-prepared SPME coating presented better extraction efficiency than commercial DVB/CAR/PDMS fiber towards all the VFAs due to its excellent properties. Under the optimized conditions, the method exhibited good linearity (0.5-200 ng) with regression coefficients (R2) ranging from 0.9836 to 0.9981 for all the analytes. The limits of detection ranged from 0.017 to 0.098 ng. Single fiber repeatability varied from 6.5% to 11.2% and the fiber-to-fiber reproducibility ranged from 8.6% to 12.3%. The proposed method was successfully applied for extraction and determination of VFAs from foot odor after sampling using cotton wool strips.

Abstract
The present review aims to describe the recent and most impactful applications in pollutant analysis using solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology in environmental, food, and bio-clinical analysis. The covered papers were published in the last 5 years (2014–2019) thus providing the reader with information about the current state-of-the-art and the future potential directions of the research in pollutant monitoring using SPME. To this end, we revised the studies focused on the investigation of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), pesticides, and emerging pollutants (EPs) including personal care products (PPCPs), in different environmental, food, and bio-clinical matrices. We especially emphasized the role that SPME is having in contaminant surveys following the path that goes from the environment to humans passing through the food web. Besides, this review covers the last technological developments encompassing the use of novel extraction coatings (e.g., metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, PDMS-overcoated fiber), geometries (e.g., Arrow-SPME, multiple monolithic fiber-SPME), approaches (e.g., vacuum and cold fiber SPME), and on-site devices. The applications of SPME hyphenated with ambient mass spectrometry have also been described.

Abstract
Background:Designing an analytical methodology for complicated matrices, such as biological and environmental samples, is difficult since the sample preparation procedure is the most demanding step affecting the whole analytical process. Nowadays, this step has become more challenging by the legislations and environmental concerns since it is a prerequisite to eliminate or minimize the use of hazardous substances in traditional procedures by replacing with green techniques suitable for the sample matrix. Methods:In addition to the matrix, the nature of the analyte also influence the ease of creating green analytical techniques. Recent developments in the chemical analysis provide us new methodologies introducing microextraction techniques and among them, solid phase microextraction (SPME) has emerged as a simple, fast, low cost, reliable and portable sample preparation technique that minimizes solvent consumption. Results:The use of home-made fibers is popular in the last two decades since the selectivity can be tuned by changing the surface characteristics through chemical and electrochemical modifications. Latter technique is preferred since the electroactive polymers can be coated onto the fiber under controlled electrochemical conditions and the film thicknesses can be adjusted by simply changing the deposition parameters. Thermal resistance and mechanical strength can be readily increased by incorporating different dopant ions into the polymeric structure and selectivity can be tuned by inserting functional groups and nanostructures. A vast number of analytes with wide range of polarities extracted by this means can be determined with a suitable chromatographic detector coupled to the system. Therefore, the main task is to improve the physicochemical properties of the fiber along with the extraction efficiency and selectivity towards the various analytes by adjusting the electrochemical preparation conditions. Conclusion:This review covers the fine tuning conditions practiced in electrochemical preparation of SPME fibers and in-tube systems and their applications in environmental, food and clinical analysis.

Abstract
Authors propose a novel braid support configuration for use in solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers. Two different braided supports (double and triple) were prepared and compared with the conventional single support configuration. Three kinds of silver-based nanomaterials that serve as coatings on these supports are described. They included silver dendrites, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), and silver dendrites decorated with AgNPs (Ag-dendrites@AgNPs). They were prepared by electrodeposition, a layer-by-layer (LBL) method, and a hybrid strategy, respectively. Fibers were used in the direct-immersion (DI) mode of SPME. Five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were studied as model analytes by DI-SPME when analyzing (spiked) underground waters. PAHs were further determined with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and fluorescence detection. The analytical performance of the fibers was compared to that of the commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) fiber of 100 μm thickness. AgNPs obtained by LBL was the best coating and the double braid was the best support configuration. The configuration of the SPME support always played an important role independently on the coating material, being always beneficial the use of double-braids. Despite the low coatings volumes of the silver-based fibers compared to that of PDMS, the analytical features of the method were adequate. Figures of merit include: (a) limits of detection down to 20 ng·L-1; (b) intra-day, inter-day, and inter-fiber precisions (expressed as RSDs) of <13%, <12%, and < 13%, respectively; and (c) adequate operational lifetime (>60 extractions). Graphical abstract Schematic presentation of braided solid-phase microextraction support configurations together with different silver-based nanomaterials as coatings.
