A novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on lanthanide-functionalized MOF for Hg2+ detection

Novel Nucleic Acid-Assisted Ion-Responsive ECL Biosensor Based on Hollow AuAg Nanoboxes with Excellent SPR and Effective Coreaction Acceleration

Novel hollow AuAg nanoboxes (AuAg NBs) were designed for an innovative electrochemiluminescence (ECL) sensor to ultrasensitively detect Pb2+ and Hg2+ with the aid of DNAzyme and "thymine-Hg2+-thymine" ("T-Hg2+-T") structure. AuAg NBs are employed as an excellent surface plasma resonance (SPR) source, as well as an effective coreaction accelerator for the CoNi NFs/S2O82- system to greatly improve ECL performance. To detect Pb2+, the DNAzyme catalyzes the cleavage of ribonucleic acid targets into numerous small nucleic acid fragments, leading to an ECL signal. When Hg2+ is added, the thymine-thymine (T-T) mismatches of the Hg2+ aptamer bind Hg2+ to form the "T-Hg2+-T" structure, which not only inhibits the SPR process but also produces a large steric hindrance, thus quenching the ECL signal and allowing quantification of Hg2+. The novel ECL sensor quantifies Pb2+ in the range of 0.1 fM to 0.1 μM with a limit of detection of 0.07 fM and Hg2+ in the range of 10 pM to 1 μM with a LOD of 4.07 pM.

Fluorescent chemosensors facilitate the visualization of plant health and their living environment in sustainable agriculture

Globally, 91% of plant production encounters diverse environmental stresses that adversely affect their growth, leading to severe yield losses of 50-60%. In this case, monitoring the connection between the environment and plant health can balance population demands with environmental protection and resource distribution. Fluorescent chemosensors have shown great progress in monitoring the health and environment of plants due to their high sensitivity and biocompatibility. However, to date, no comprehensive analysis and systematic summary of fluorescent chemosensors used in monitoring the correlation between plant health and their environment have been reported. Thus, herein, we summarize the current fluorescent chemosensors ranging from their design strategies to applications in monitoring plant-environment interaction processes. First, we highlight the types of fluorescent chemosensors with design strategies to resolve the bottlenecks encountered in monitoring the health and living environment of plants. In addition, the applications of fluorescent small-molecule, nano and supramolecular chemosensors in the visualization of the health and living environment of plants are discussed. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives in this field are presented. This work will provide guidance for the design of efficient fluorescent chemosensors to monitor plant health, and then promote sustainable agricultural development.

Morphology Control of Zr-Based Luminescent Metal-Organic Frameworks for Aflatoxin B1 Detection

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained significant prominence as sensing materials owing to their unique properties. However, understanding the correlation between the morphology, properties, and sensing performance in these MOF-based sensors remains a challenge, limiting their applications and potential for improvement. In this study, Zr-MOF was chosen as an ideal model to explore the impact of the MOF morphology on the sensing performance, given its remarkable stability and structural variability. Three luminescent MOFs (namely rod-like Zr-LMOF, prismoid-like Zr-LMOF, and ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF) were synthesized by adjusting the quantities of the benzoic acid and the reaction time. More importantly, the sensing performance of these Zr-LMOFs in response to aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was thoroughly examined. Notably, the ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF exhibited significantly higher sensitivity compared to other Zr-LMOFs, attributed to its large specific surface area and pore volume. Additionally, an in-depth investigation into the detection mechanism of AFB1 by Zr-LMOFs was conducted. Building upon these insights, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor was developed by coordinating Eu3+ with ellipsoid-like Zr-LMOF, achieving a remarkably lower detection limit of 2.82 nM for AFB1. This study contributes to an improved comprehension of the relationship between the MOF morphology and the sensing characteristics while presenting an effective approach for AFB1 detection.

Thiourea Functionalised Receptor for Selective Detection of Mercury Ions and its Application in Serum Sample

A thiourea functionalised fluorescent probe 1-phenyl-3-(pyridin-4-yl)thiourea was synthesized and utilised as a fluorescent turn-on chemosensor for the selective recognition of Hg2+ ion over competitive metal ions including Na+, Mn2+, Li+, Cr2+, Ni2+, Ca2+, Cd2+, Mg2+, K+, Co2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Al3+ and Fe2+ ions based on the inter-molecular charge transfer (ICT). Intriguingly, the receptor demonstrated unique sensing capabilities for Hg2+ in DMSO: H2O (10:90, v/v). The addition of Hg2+ ions to the sensor resulted in a blue shift in the absorption intensity and also enhancement in fluorescence intensity at 435 nm. Fluorescence emission intensity increased linearly with Hg2+ concentration ranging from 0 to 80 µL. The detection limit and binding constant were determined as 0.134 × 10-6 M and 1.733 × 107 M-1, respectively. The sensing behavior of Hg2+ was further examined using DLS, SEM and FTIR. The probe could detect Hg2+ ions across a wide pH range. Furthermore, the receptor L demonstrated good sensing performance for Hg2+ in bovine serum albumin and actual water samples.

o-phenylenediamine Derived Fluorescent Carbon Quantum dots for Detection of Hg(II) in Environmental Water

With the expansion of human activities, the consequent influx of mercury (Hg) into the food chain and the environment is seriously threatening human life. Herein, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped fluorescent carbon quantum dots (yCQDs) were prepared via a hydrothermal method using o-phenylenediamine (OPD) and taurine as precursors. The morphological characteristics as well as spectral features of yCQDs indicated that the photoluminescence mechanism should be the molecular state fluorophores of 2, 3-diaminophenothiazine (oxOPD), which is the oxide of OPD. The as-synthesized yCQDs exhibited sensitive recognition of Hg2+. According to the investigation in combination of UV-Vis absorption spectra, time-resolved fluorescence spectra and quantum chemical calculations, the abundant functional groups on the surface of yCQDs allowed Hg2+ to bind with yCQDs through various interactions, and the formed complexes significantly inhibited the absorption of excitation light, resulting in the static fluorescence quenching of yCQDs. The proposed yCQDs was utilized for Hg2+ sensing with the limit of detection calculated to be 4.50 × 10- 8 M. Furthermore, the recognition ability of yCQDs for Hg2+ was estimated in tap water, lake water and bottled water, and the results indicated that yCQDs have potential applications in monitoring Hg2+.

Fabrication of nanofibrous membranes decorated with metal-organic frameworks for detection of pollutants in water

The environmental pollution caused by antibiotics, Fe3+ and MnO4- pollutants is becoming increasingly serious. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) were used and decorated with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to fabricated three kinds of nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) with different shapes and sizes were prepared by electrospinning technology using in situ growth method and mixed spinning method. The structures and properties of the above three kinds of NFMs were characterized. Among them, PAN@Co/Mn-MOF-74 NFM prepared by in-situ growth method based on PAN was a kind of nano-fluorescent NFM sensor with uniform structure and good fluorescence performance. It showed unique specificity and excellent sensitivity in the detection of ORN, Fe3+ and MnO4-. Compared with previously reported functionalized MOFs, PAN@Co/Mn-MOF-74 NFM has a lower limit of detection (LOD). This study provides a feasible technical route for the preparation of nano-fluorescent NFMs and the targeted detection of trace metal ions and antibiotics.

Harnessing the Chemical Functionality of Metal-Organic Frameworks Toward Removal of Aqueous Pollutants

Wastewater treatment has been bestowed with a plethora of materials; among them, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are one such kind with exceptional properties. Besides their application in gas adsorption and storage, they are applied in many fields. In orientation toward wastewater treatment, MOFs have been and are being successfully employed to capture a variety of aqueous pollutants, including both organic and inorganic ones. This review sheds light on the postsynthetic modifications (PSMs) performed over MOFs to adsorb and degrade recalcitrant. Modifications performed on the metal nodes and the linkers have been explained with reference to some widely used chemical modifications like alkylation, amination, thiol addition, tandem modifications, and coordinate modifications. The boost in pollutant removal efficacy, reaction rate, adsorption capacity, and selectivity for the modified MOFs is highlighted. The rationale and the robustness of micromotor MOFs, i.e., MOFs with motor activity, and their potential application in the capture of toxic pollutants are also presented for readers. This review also discusses the challenges and future recommendations to be considered in performing PSM over a MOF concerning wastewater treatment.

A graphitic C3N4 nanocomposite-based fluorescence platform for label-free analysis of trace mercury ions

In this study, a nanocomposite consisting of graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets loaded with graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (CNQDs/CNNNs) was synthesized via a one-step pyrolysis method. This nanocomposite exhibited excellent thermal stability, photobleaching and salt resistance. Then a new fluorescence sensing platform based on CNQDs/CNNNs was constructed, which showed high sensitivity and selectivity towards trace mercury ions (Hg2+). By using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra and density functional theory, the fluorescence response mechanism was elucidated where Hg2+ could interact with CNQDs/CNNNs, causing a structural change in the nanocomposite, further affecting its bandgap structure, and finally leading to fluorescence quenching. The linear range for detecting Hg2+ was found to be 0.025-4.0 μmol L-1, with a detection limit of 7.82 nmol L-1. This strategy provided the advantages of a rapid response and a broad detection range, making it suitable for quantitative detection of Hg2+ in environmental water.

A series of viologen complexes containing thiophene and Br- dual fluorescent chromophores for continuous visual sensing of pH and Hg2

The mercury ion (Hg2+) is a typical high-toxicity substance that can cause severe damage to the environment and human bodies. For the detection of Hg2+, there are still significant challenges in the detection range and limit of detection (LOD). In this study, three viologen-based fluorescent probes are developed, CdCl4(Btybipy) (1), ZnBr4(Btybipy) (2), CdBr4(Btybipy) (3) (Btybipy = bis-1-thiophen-3-ylmethyl-[4,4']-bipyridinyl) through conventional solvent methods for detecting pH and Hg2+. Reversible discoloration and fluorescence response behaviour in the pH range of 4-12.8 is demonstrated by viologen-based fluorescent probes, which exhibit "ON-OFF-ON" signal changes. Compared with complex 1, it is surprising to find that complexes 2-3 display both fluorescence enhancement and fluorescence quenching simultaneously with the addition of different concentrations of Hg2+ (0-20 and 25-400 μM). There is broad linearity in the range of 0-20 and 50-300 μM with LODs of 2.14 and 3.13 nM, respectively. This occurrence of dual-signal modes is attributed to the participation of Br- and the thiophene S atom as dual chromophores in the coordination reaction of Hg2+. Dual-signal mode output, high sensitivity, wide detection range, and low LODs are exhibited by these fluorescent probes. The unique coordination reaction between Br- and the thiophene S atom with Hg2+ can provide a potential strategy for the exploitation of promising sensing platforms for monitoring Hg2+.

Cd-MOF and Its Ln3+-Post Modification Products: Regulation of Luminescence Properties and Improved Detection of Uric Acid, Quinine, and Quinidine

One 3D Cd-MOF, namely, {[(HDMA)2][Cd3(L)2]·5H2O·2DMF}n (LCU-124, LCU indicates Liaocheng University), was synthesized from an ether-containing ligand 1,3-bis(3,5-dicarboxylphenoxy)benzene (H4L). Its Ln3+-postmodified samples, Eu3+@LCU-124 and Tb3+@LCU-124, were obtained through cation exchange of dimethylamine cation (HDMA) with Eu3+ and Tb3+. The successful entry of rare earth into LCU-124 by cation exchange modification was verified by IR, XRD, XPS, EDS mapping, and luminescence spectra. The proportion of Eu3+/Tb3+ was adjusted during the modification process, leading to fluorescent materials with different emissions. Luminescence measurements indicated that these complexes exhibited interesting multiresponsive sensing activities toward biomarkers urine acid (UA), quinine (QN), and quinidine (QND). First, LCU-124 has a pronounced quenching effect toward UA with the detection limit of 31.01 μM. After modification, the visualization of the detection was improved significantly and the detection limit of Eu3+@LCU-124 was reduced to 0.868 μM. Second, when QN and QND were present in the suspensions of Eu3+@LCU-124 and Tb3+@LCU-124, strong blue light emission peaks occurred, while the characteristic emission of Eu3+/Tb3+ decreased, forming ratiometric fluorescent sensors with the detection limit in the range of 0.199-9.49 μM. The fluorescent probes have high selectivity, excellent sensitivity recycling, and fast response time (less than 1 min). Besides, a simple logic gate circuit and a range of luminescent mixed matrix membranes were designed to provide simple and fast detection of above biomarkers. Our work indicated that modification of Eu3+/Tb3+ could improve the detection ability significantly.

The construction of dual-emissive ratiometric fluorescent probes based on fluorescent nanoparticles for the detection of metal ions and small molecules

With the rapid development of fluorescent nanoparticles (FNPs), such as CDs, QDs, and MOFs, the construction of FNP-based probes has played a key role in improving chemical sensors. Ratiometric fluorescent probes exhibit distinct advantages, such as resistance to environmental interference and achieving visualization. Thus, FNP-based dual-emission ratiometric fluorescent probes (DRFPs) have rapidly developed in the field of metal ion and small molecule detection in the past few years. In this review, firstly we introduce the fluorescence sensing mechanisms; then, we focus on the strategies for the fabrication of DRFPs, including hybrid FNPs, single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission and target-induced new emission, and DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles. In the section on hybrid FNPs, methods to assemble two types of FNPs, such as chemical bonding, electrostatic interaction, core satellite or core-shell structures, coordination, and encapsulation, are introduced. In the section on single FNPs with intrinsic dual emission, methods for the design of dual-emission CDs, QDs, and MOFs are discussed. Regarding target-induced new emission, sensitization, coordination, hydrogen bonding, and chemical reaction induced new emissions are discussed. Furthermore, in the section on DRFPs based on auxiliary nanoparticles, auxiliary nanomaterials with the inner filter effect and enzyme mimicking activity are discussed. Finally, the existing challenges and an outlook on the future of DRFP are presented. We sincerely hope that this review will contribute to the quick understanding and exploration of DRFPs by researchers.

A ratiometric fluorescent paper sensor based on dye-embedded MOF for high-sensitive detection of arginine

Ratiometric fluorescent sensors can suppress the interference of factors unrelated to analysis due to their built-in self-calibration characteristics, which exhibit higher sensitivity and more obvious visual detection in the process of qualitative and quantitative analysis. Herein, we constructed a ratiometric fluorescence probe based on fluorescent/colorimetric dual-mode method for the determination of arginine by encapsulating rhodamine B in-situ into UiO-66-NH2 MOFs (UiO-66-NH2@RhB). The as-prepared probe showed dual-emission characteristics under a single excitation wavelength. The fluorescence intensity of UiO-66-NH2 was increased significantly by arginine, while the emission peak intensity of rhodamine B remained stable, resulting in a single-signal response with fixed reference. Furthermore, the practicality of the presented sensor was successfully validated by quantitative detection of arginine in human serum. More significantly, paper-based sensors for arginine detection were devised by using carboxymethyl cellulose modified filter papers. Under the irradiation of ultraviolet light, the paper-based sensors would produce obvious color variation from lightpink to bluish violet. This work provided a convenient and efficient method for on-site detection of arginine.

Recent advances in fluorescent materials for mercury(ii) ion detection

Invading mercury would cause many serious health hazards such as kidney damage, genetic freak, and nerve injury to human body. Thus, developing highly efficient and convenient mercury detection methods is of great significance for environmental governance and protection of public health. Motivated by this problem, various testing technologies for detecting trace mercury in the environment, food, medicines or daily chemicals have been developed. Among them, the fluorescence sensing technology is a sensitive and efficient detection method for detecting Hg2+ ions due to its simple operation, rapid response and economic value. This review aims to discuss the recent advances in fluorescent materials for Hg2+ ion detection. We reviewed the Hg2+ sensing materials and divided them into seven categories according to the sensing mechanism: static quenching, photoinduced electron transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, aggregation-induced emission, metallophilic interaction, mercury-induced reactions and ligand-to-metal energy transfer. The challenges and prospects of fluorescent Hg2+ ion probes are briefly presented. We hope that this review can provide some new insights and guidance for the design and development of novel fluorescent Hg2+ ion probes to promote their applications.

Wavelength-shift-based visual fluorescence sensing of aspartic acids using Eu/Gd-MOF through pH triggering

With the increasing demand for on-site detection, the current approach of building dual-emission or multi-emission luminescence sensors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) which possess the capacity of self-reference for numerous non-analyte factors falls short of meeting sensing requirements. Therefore, we have designed a novel strategy for constructing wavelength shift-based luminescence sensor named Eu/Gd(TCPP), which exhibits dual-emitting from metal ions Eu³⁺ and flexible rotating aggregation-induced emission (AIE) ligands H₄TCPP (2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine). This sensor was prepared by a simple, green and fast plasma synthesis method. It's worth noting that the fluorescence emission of Eu/Gd(TCPP) shows a specific wavelength shift from ligand peak, and a visual color change from red to blue within a pH range of 4 to 3. Moreover, various characterization data verified that the luminescence switching mechanism of Eu/Gd(TCPP) was attributed to the H⁺-induced collapse of the Eu/Gd(TCPP) crystal structure, followed by untwisting of free ligands that lose rigid MOFs confinement. This hindered the antenna effect from H₄TCPP to Ln³⁺ ions and restricted the rotation emission of ligand, resulting in the red-shifting of the ligand emission and corresponding luminescence switching. By tactfully utilizing the short-range pH response property of Eu/Gd(TCPP), highly sensitive and selective on-site visual detection of acidic aspartic acid can be achieved.

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using Ficus elastica extract for the electrochemical simultaneous detection of Cd2+, Pb2+, and Hg2

In this paper, for the first time, we report the use of a new carbon paste electrode based on a low-cost pencil graphite powder modified with polyaniline (PANI) and green synthesized copper oxide nanoparticles using Ficus elastica extract as a sensor for Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺. The elaborated electrode was characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy, field-emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and simultaneous thermal analysis (TGA/DSC). The electrochemical behavior of the sensor was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques. According to CV, as well as square wave voltammetry (SWV) results, it was found that the CuONPs/PANI-CPE sensor was able to determine very low concentrations of Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺ in HCl (0.01 M) either in single metal or in multi-metal solutions with a high sensitivity. Furthermore, Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺ simultaneous detection on CuONPs/PANI-CPE achieved very low limits of detection (0.11, 0.16, and 0.07 μg L^-1, respectively). Besides, the designed sensor displayed a good selectivity, reproducibility, and stability. Moreover, CuONPs/PANI-CPE enabled us to determine with high accuracy Cd²⁺, Pb²⁺, and Hg²⁺ traces in environmental matrices.

A wide-range ratiometric sensor mediating fluorescence and scattering based on carbon dots/metal-organic framework composites for the detection of bisulfite/sulfite in sugar

Bisulfite (HSO₃^-) and sulfite (SO₃^2-) are commonly employed in food preservatives and are also significant environmental pollutants. Thus, developing an effective method for detecting HSO₃^-/SO₃^2- is crucial for food safety and environment monitoring. In this work, based on carbon dots (CDs) and zeolitic imidazolate framework-90 (ZIF-90), a composite probe (named CDs@ZIF-90) is constructed. The fluorescence signal and the second-order scattering signal of CDs@ZIF-90 are employed to ratiometricly detect HSO₃^-/SO₃^2-. This proposed strategy exhibits a broad linear range for HSO₃^-/SO₃^2- determination (10 µM to 8.5 mM) with a limit of detection of 2.74 μM. This strategy is successfully applied for evaluating HSO₃^-/SO₃^2- in sugar with satisfactory recoveries. Therefore, this work has uniquely combined the fluorescence and second-order scattering signals to establish a novel sensing system with a wide linear range, which is applicable for ratiometric sensing of HSO₃^-/SO₃^2- in actual samples.

A visual ratiometric fluorescence sensor for glutathione response based on MnO2 nanowires as an oxidant, quencher and recognition unit

As the "mother of antioxidants", glutathione (GSH) plays an important role in physiological functions. Rapid and accurate monitoring of GSH is of great significance for medicinal chemistry, food chemistry, and clinical medicine. We herein report a visual ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on MnO₂ nanowires (MnO₂ NWs) as an oxidant, quencher and recognition unit for the determination of GSH. The powerful ratiometric fluorescent probe was constructed by mixing thiamine (VB₁) and rhodamine B (RhB) with the help of MnO₂ NWs. MnO₂ NWs could not only effectively quench the fluorescence of RhB due to the inner filter effect (IFE), but also oxidized non-fluorescent VB₁ to blue fluorescent thiochrome (oxVB₁). Upon interaction with GSH, the quenched RhB fluorescence could be rapidly restored through decomposition of MnO₂ NWs into Mn²⁺, while the oxVB₁ fluorescence decreased, showing an apparent color change from blue to red. The concentration of GSH was proportional to the ratio of fluorescence intensities of RhB and oxVB₁, and the detection linear range was 1 to 10 000 μM with comparable selectivity. This ratio fluorescence sensor was successfully applied to GSH determination in whitening capsules and glutathione tablets with satisfactory results, and the sensor may be a potentially powerful tool for the detection of GSH.

Two novel zinc-based MOFs as luminescence sensors to detect phenylglyoxylic acid

Automobile exhaust gases, plastic pollutants, smoking, and other harmful substances can cause serious harm to human beings and the environment. Styrene, as a common airborne toxin, enters the human body through breathing or the skin and is discharged in the form of phenylglyoxylic acid (PGA). Therefore, specific, sensitive and trace detection of PGA is particularly important. Here, two zinc-based metal-organic frameworks {[Zn₂L₁(DMF)₂H₂O](DMF)₂H₂O}_n, {[Zn₄(L₂)₂(DMF)₂(H₂O)₃](DMF)₈}_n (L₁ = 2,5-bis((3-carboxylphenyl)amino)terephthalic acid, L₂ = 2,5-bis((4-carboxyphenyl)amino)terephthalic acid) have been reported as 1 and 2, respectively. Both 1 and 2 present 3D structures, which can both be simplified as 4,4,4-c net topology. It is worth mentioning that 2 has two different kinds of Zn SBUs as connecting nodes in the structure. Besides, compared with the other materials for the detection of PGA, 1 and 2 exhibit relatively low detection limits (LODs), both in water and in urine (where the LODs for 1 in water and urine were 0.33 μM and 0.43 μM in the range of 0-0.39 mM, and those for 2 were 0.28 μM and 0.49 μM in the range of 0-0.59 mM, respectively). In addition, the sensors have excellent anti-interference ability, high stability, rapid response, and can easily distinguish between different concentrations of PGA with the naked eye. The developed paper probes were suitable for practical sensing applications for portable detection of PGA in urine.

An Overview of the Design of Metal-Organic Frameworks-Based Fluorescent Chemosensors and Biosensors

Taking advantage of high porosity, large surface area, tunable nanostructures and ease of functionalization, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been popularly applied in different fields, including adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, drug delivery, light harvesting, and chemical/biological sensing. The abundant active sites for specific recognition and adjustable optical and electrical characteristics allow for the design of various sensing platforms with MOFs as promising candidates. In this review, we systematically introduce the recent advancements of MOFs-based fluorescent chemosensors and biosensors, mainly focusing on the sensing mechanisms and analytes, including inorganic ions, small organic molecules and biomarkers (e.g., small biomolecules, nucleic acids, proteins, enzymes, and tumor cells). This review may provide valuable references for the development of novel MOFs-based sensing platforms to meet the requirements of environment monitoring and clinical diagnosis.
