Green-Synthesized Characterization, Antioxidant and Antibacterial Applications of CtAC/MNPs-Ag Nanocomposites

The emergence of antibiotic resistance, caused by the improper use of antibiotics, is a significant challenge in combating infectious diseases, leading to millions of annual fatalities. The occurrence of antimicrobial side effects catalyzes the investigation of novel antimicrobial compounds and sources of drugs. Consequently, the research on biological activity that is conducted on plants, plant extracts, and compounds that are produced from plant components is of utmost significance. In this study, CtAC/MNPs were obtained by the reaction of activated carbon (AC) obtained from the fruits of the Celtis tournefortii (Ct) plant and magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs), and a CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite was synthesized by the reduction in silver ions added to the reaction. The synthesized CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites were analyzed spectroscopically (FTIR, XRD), microscopically (SEM, EDX), optically (DLS), electrochemically (zeta potential) and magnetically (VSM). The antibacterial activities of CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites against S. aureus and E. coli were investigated by microdilution method using minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and disk diffusion methods. Antioxidant activity study, including total phenolic content and DPPH and cuprac assays, revealed the remarkable effect of the CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite. This study has the advantages of obtaining CtAC/MNPs and CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposites in a short time without requiring energy, and most importantly, the reaction takes place without using any toxic substances. In addition, according to the data obtained in the study, the CtAC/MNPs-Ag nanocomposite is thought to shed light on biomedical research.

Potent and Versatile Biogenically Synthesized Alumina/Nickel Oxide Nanocomposite Adsorbent for Defluoridation of Drinking Water

In the present work, an extract of Salvia officinalis leaves was used to synthesize an alumina/NiO nanocomposite by the coprecipitation method. First, the shape and surface content of the synthesized adsorbent were determined. Scanning electron microscopy images showed the production of nanospheres and nanorods with sizes between 35 and 50 nm. X-ray diffraction measurement revealed strong, high-intensity peaks, confirming the preparation of a highly crystalline alumina/nickel oxide nanocomposite. Then, the pure nanoalumina, nickel oxide, and functionalized alumina/nickel oxide nanocomposite for water defluoridation were investigated under various conditions, for example, stirring period, pH, and initial fluoride concentration. Defluoridation with greener alumina, nickel oxide, and alumina/nickel oxide nanocomposite lasted 120 min at adsorbent dosages of 0.8 g/L in a pH 7 solution. The adoption process for the three sorbents matches the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The process dynamics were explored using pseudo-second-order and first-order kinetics. The water quality after treatment met drinking water requirements, proving the viability of using nanoparticles for drinking water defluoridation. This work confirmed effective water defluoridation in the crystalline phase using synthesized nanoalumina, nickel oxide, and their nanocomposite, which highlights their importance for future drinking water defluoridation.

Recent Advancements and Unexplored Biomedical Applications of Green Synthesized Ag and Au Nanoparticles: A Review

Green synthesis of silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) has acquired huge popularity owing to their potential applications in various fields. A large number of research articles exist in the literature describing the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs for biomedical applications. However, these findings are scattered, making it time-consuming for researchers to locate promising advancements in Ag and Au NPs synthesis and their unexplored biomedical applications. Unlike other review articles, this systematic study not only highlights recent advancements in the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs but also explores their potential unexplored biomedical applications. The article discusses the various synthesis approaches for the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs highlighting the emerging developments and novel strategies. Then, the article reviews the important biomedical applications of green synthesized Ag and Au NPs by critically evaluating the expected advantages. To expose future research direction in the field, the article describes the unexplored biomedical applications of the NPs. Finally, the articles discuss the challenges and limitations in the green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs and their biomedical applications. This article will serve as a valuable reference for researchers, working on green synthesis of Ag and Au NPs for biomedical applications.

Catharanthus roseus-assisted bio-fabricated zinc oxide nanoparticles for promising antibacterial potential against Klebsiella pneumoniae

This study emphasized on the synthesis of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in an environmentally friendly manner from the extract of Catharanthus roseus leaves and its antibacterial assessment against the pneumonia-causing pathogen Klebsiella pneumoniae. This simple and convenient phytosynthesis approach is found to be beneficial over conventional methods, wherein plants serve as excellent reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents that enables the formation of ZnO NPs without the use of harmful chemicals. The formation of ZnO NPs was confirmed through several characterization techniques such as UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, FT-IR, SEM, HR-TEM, and EDX. XRD analysis revealed high polycrystallinity with crystallite size of approximately 13 nm. SEM and HR-TEM revealed the hexagonal structure of ZnO NPs with the particle size range of 20-50 nm. The EDX shows the elemental purity without any impurity. Furthermore, the antibacterial efficacy by the technique of disc diffusion exhibited clear inhibition zones in ZnO NPs-treated discs. In addition, 125 µg/mL of ZnO NP concentration showed minimum inhibition by the microbroth dilution method. The potent inhibitory activity was further validated with trypan blue dye exclusion and fluorescence microscopy. Finally, SEM examination confirmed the efficient antibacterial potential of ZnO NPs through disruption of the intact morphology of Klebsiella pneumoniae.

Anti-oncogenic Potential and Inflammation Modulatory Response of Green Synthesized Biocompatible Silver Nanoparticles

This study presents a novel approach to synthesizing silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using a solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method with Catharanthus roseus (C. roseus) leaf extract. The NPs were thoroughly characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Selected area electron diffraction (SAED), elucidating their crystal structure. Notably, the synthesized Ag NPs exhibited a significant dose-dependent decline in viability of the MDA-MB 231 breast cancer cell line, with an IC50 value of 13.3 μg/mL, underscoring their potential as potent anticancer agent. Beyond cytotoxicity, the study pioneers an investigation into the biocompatibility of Ag NPs by blood hemolsysis, providing critical insights into their safety and biomedical applicability. Furthermore, this research uncovers a distinctive facet of Ag NPs, revealing their inhibitory effects on the inflammatory enzyme secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2), a recognized biomarker for breast cancer. The demonstrated in vitro and in vivo inhibition of sPLA2 highlights the multifaceted potential of Ag NPs in not only targeting cancer cells but also modulating inflammatory responses associated with breast cancer, positioning the study at the forefront of advancements in nanomedicine and cancer therapeutics.

Synthesis of Plant-Mediated Iron Oxide Nanoparticles and Optimization of Chemically Modified Activated Carbon Adsorbents for Removal of As, Pb, and Cd Ions from Wastewater

This research study was designed with the aim to prepare plant extract-mediated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) and different chemically modified carbon adsorbents from the Parthenium hysterophorus plant and then optimize the carbon adsorbents by evaluating their adsorption applications in wastewater for the selected metal ions like arsenic (As3+), lead (Pb2+), and cadmium (Cd2+). The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) technique was used to highlight functional groups in plant-mediated IONPs and chemically modified carbon adsorbents. A scanning electron microscopy study was conducted to explain the surface morphology of the adsorbents. Energy-dispersive X-rays was used for elemental analysis and X-ray diffraction for particle size and crystallinity of the adsorbents. From the study, it was found that the best optimum conditions were pH = 5-6, initial concentration of adsorbate of 10 mg/L, dose of adsorbent of 0.01 g, contact time of 90-120 min of adsorbent and adsorbate, and temperature of 25 °C. At optimum conditions, the adsorption capacities of IONPs for arsenic (As) 144.7 mg/g, lead (Pb) 128.01 mg/g, and cadmium (Cd) ions 122.1 mg/g were recorded. The activated carbon at optimum conditions showed adsorption capacities of 46.35 mg/g for As, 121.95 mg/g for Pb, and 113.25 mg/g for Cd ion. At equilibrium, Langmuir, Freundlich Temkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich isotherms were applied on the experimental adsorption data having the best R2 values (0.973-0.999) by the Langmuir isotherm. High-correlation coefficient R2 values (0.996-0.999) were obtained from the pseudo-second-order for all cases, showing that the adsorption process proceeds through pseudo second-order kinetics. The apparent adsorption energy E value was in the range of 0.24-2.36 kJ/mol. The adsorption capacity of regenerated IONPs for As gradually decreased from 144.8 to 45.67 mg/g, for lead 128.15 to 41.65 mg/g, and cadmium from 122.10 to 31.20 mg/g in 5 consecutive cycles. The study showed that the synthesized IONPs and acid-activated carbon adsorbent were successfully used to remove selected metal ions from wastewater.

Green synthesis of Ag and Cu-doped Bismuth oxide nanoparticles: Revealing synergistic antimicrobial and selective cytotoxic potentials for biomedical advancements

BACKGROUND

Nanotechnology has emerged as a transformative realm of exploration across diverse scientific domains. A particular focus lies on metal oxide nanoparticles, which boast distinctive physicochemical attributes on the nanoscale. Of note, green synthesis has emerged as a promising avenue, leveraging plant extracts as both reduction and capping agents. This approach offers environmentally friendly and cost-effective avenues for generating monodispersed nanoparticles with precise morphologies.

METHODS

In this investigation, we embarked on the synthesis of Bismuth oxide nanoparticles, both in their pure form and doped with silver (Ag) and copper (Cu). This synthesis harnessed the potential of Biebersteinia multifida extract as a versatile reducing agent. To comprehensively characterize the synthesized nanoparticles, a suite of analytical techniques was employed, including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy.

RESULTS

The synthesized nanoparticles underwent a rigorous assessment. Their antibacterial attributes were probed, revealing a pronounced enhancement in antibiofilm activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria upon metal nanoparticle doping. Furthermore, their potential for combating cancer was scrutinized, with the nanoparticles exhibiting selective cytotoxicity towards cancer cells, U87, compared to normal 3T3 cells. Notably, among the doped nanoparticles, Cu-doped variants demonstrated the highest potency, further underscoring their promising potential.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the present study underscores the efficacy of green synthesized Bismuth oxide nanoparticles, particularly those doped with Ag and Cu, in augmenting antibacterial efficacy, bolstering biofilm inhibition, and manifesting selective cytotoxicity against cancer cells. These findings portend a promising trajectory for these nanoparticles in the spheres of biomedicine and therapeutics. As we look ahead, a deeper elucidation of their mechanistic underpinnings and in vivo investigations are essential to fully unlock their potential for forthcoming biomedical applications.

Study of Opuntia humifusa: phytochemical analysis of aqueous fruit extract and green synthesis of Ag2O nanoparticles

Ag2O nanoparticle synthesis was carried out via co-precipitation technique based on using AgNO3 and secondary metabolites present in the aqueous extract of Opuntia humifusa fruit for the first time. The amount of measured total phenol, flavonoid content, flavone, and flavonol content, and anthocyanin were 38.46 μg eq gallic acid mg-1 extract, 8.34 μg eq quercetin mg-1 extract, 0.614 μg eq quercetin mg-1 DW, and 3.1 mmol L-1, respectively. Moreover, the predominant phenolic compound was gallic acid. Catechin and chlorogenic acid were found in both fruit juice and fruit aqueous extract. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of Ag2O-NPs showed the average particle size was 10.58 nm. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction Spectroscopy, and UV/visible spectrometry also confirmed the synthesis. This study then focuses on IC50 and NO amount differences before and after the synthesis of Ag2O-NPs which were 448.29 and 101.38 μg mL-1 for IC50 and 35.7% and 62.6% for NO, respectively.

Green Synthesis of Metal and Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: A Review of the Principles and Biomedical Applications

In recent years, interest in nanotechnology has increased exponentially due to enhanced progress and technological innovation. In tissue engineering, the development of metallic nanoparticles has been amplified, especially due to their antibacterial properties. Another important characteristic of metal NPs is that they enable high control over the features of the developed scaffolds (optimizing their mechanical strength and offering the controlled release of bioactive agents). Currently, the main concern related to the method of synthesis of metal oxide NPs is the environmental impact. The physical and chemical synthesis uses toxic agents that could generate hazards or exert carcinogenicity/environmental toxicity. Therefore, a greener, cleaner, and more reliable approach is needed. Green synthetic has come as a solution to counter the aforementioned limitations. Nowadays, green synthesis is preferred because it leads to the prevention/minimization of waste, the reduction of derivatives/pollution, and the use of non-toxic (safer) solvents. This method not only uses biomass sources as reducing agents for metal salts. The biomolecules also cover the synthesized NPs or act as in situ capping and reducing agents. Further, their involvement in the formation process reduces toxicity, prevents nanoparticle agglomeration, and improves the antimicrobial activity of the nanomaterial, leading to a possible synergistic effect. This study aims to provide a comprehensive review of the green synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, from the synthesis routes, selected solvents, and parameters to their latest application in the biomedical field.

Construction of novel potentiometric sensors modified with biogenically synthesized metal oxide nanoparticles for sensitive detection of the opioid agonist-antagonist nalbuphine hydrochloride in its injection

Novel and sensitive potentiometric sensors were described for the assay of nalbuphine HCl (NBP) in authentic powder and injection samples. The developed sensors were modified with alumina nanoparticles (Al2O3NPs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs). The nanoscale materials were synthesized using the extract of Salvia officinalis leaves in an environmentally friendly manner. The synthesized metal oxides were fully confirmed by various analytical techniques. Scanning electron microscope confirmed the morphology of nanosized materials with even distribution and particle size of 55.07 ± 4.15 and 59.48 ± 4.50 nm for Al2O3NPs and CuONPs, respectively. The modified sensors were prepared in three different steps. Nalbuphine hydrochloride was mixed with phosphomolybdic acid to prepare the sensor material nalbuphine phosphomolybdate (NBP-PM). It was then mixed with polyvinyl chloride in the presence of o-nitrophenyl ether and metal oxide nanoparticles to form the membrane matrix. Finally, a copper wire was coated with the sensing material. Excellent potentials of 1.0 × 10-8-1.0 × 10-2 and 1.0 × 10-9-1.0 × 10-2 mol L-1 were measured with lower assay limits of 4.8 × 10-9 and 5.0 × 10-10 mol L-1. The average detection % were 99.28 ± 0.58% and 99.52 ± 0.28% for NBP-PM-Al2O3NPs and NBP-PM-CuONPs, correspondingly. The suitability of the described sensors was investigated in terms of various validation criteria, and the modified sensors exposed excellent applicability and insurance for the quantification of nalbuphine hydrochloride in its bulk samples and injections compared with another standard sensor. It is obvious that the developed NBP-PM-Al2O3NPs and NBP-PM-CuONPs will serve as suitable sensors for the determination of NBP.

Nanocomposites from spent coffee grounds and iron/zinc oxide: green synthesis, characterization, and application in textile wastewater treatment

This study reports on a novel composite of bimetallic FeO/ZnO nanoparticles supported by spent coffee grounds (SCGs). The leaves of eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus Labill) and trumpet (Cuphea aequipetala Cav), with their high antioxidant content, serve as bio-reductant agents for the green synthesis of nanoparticles. It was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Stable nanoparticles were produced with different diameters of 5-30 nm, and they were applied as catalysts in Fenton-like processes. Box-Behnken experimental design (BBD) was used to determine the optimal removal efficiency with three factors and was used in the degradation of textile dyes from wastewater. The nanocomposite displayed a high decolorization ratio (88%) of indigo carmine in the presence of H2O2 combined. This resulted in a reduction in chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 56% at 120 min of contact time at an initial pH of 3.0 and a 0.5 g/L of catalyst dose, a H2O2 concentration of 8.8 mM/L, an initial dye concentration of 100 mg/L, and a temperature of 25 °C.

Analysis of Crystallographic Structures and Properties of Silver Nanoparticles Synthesized Using PKL Extract and Nanoscale Characterization Techniques

In this cutting-edge research era, silver nanoparticles impose a substantial impact because of their wide applicability in the field of engineering, science, and industry. Regarding the vast applications of silver nanoparticles, in this study, the crystallographic characteristics and nanostructures of silver nanoparticles extracted from natural resources have been studied. First, biosynthetic silver nanoparticles were synthesized using the Pathor Kuchi leaf (PKL) extract as a mediator, and their crystal structures and characteristics were analyzed by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The average crystallite size of the synthesized silver nanoparticle was determined to be 20.26 nm, and also the lattice strain, intrinsic stress, and dislocation density were measured to be 2.19 × 10-3, 0.08235 GPa, and 3.062045 × 10-3/nm2, respectively. Further, the prepared sample of silver nanoparticles shows four peaks in the X-ray diffraction pattern, which correspond to the (111), (200), (220), and (311) face-centered cubic (FCC) crystalline planes. The outstanding finding of this work was that when the lattice parameters of the precursor were increased, the volume of the material did not considerably change, but the particle size decreased. Second, it was clearly demonstrated that this straightforward method is a clean, cost-effective, environmentally sustainable, nontoxic, and efficient route for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) using PKL leaf at ambient temperature, which also satisfies the green chemistry requirements. Finally, this study demonstrates the scope for the production of silver nanoparticles using low-cost natural resources.

Exploring the Paradigm of Phyto-Nanofabricated Metal Oxide Nanoparticles: Recent Advancements, Applications, and Challenges

The development of nanotechnology, in particular metal oxide nanoparticles, has captured immense scientific attention in the global arena due to their unique properties leading to their unique diverse applications. But the use of toxic precursors and high operational cost make existing methodologies inefficient for synthesising metal oxide nanoparticles (MONPs). Biogenic synthesis of MONPs has been hailed as a more sustainable approach for the synthesis of NPs due to its alignment with the principles of green chemistry. Microorganisms (bacteria, yeast, algae), animal sources (silk, fur, etc.), and plants are effective, low-cost, and eco-friendly means of synthesizing MONPs since they possess a high bio-reduction abilities to produce NPs of various shapes and sizes. The current review encompasses recent advancements in the field of plant-mediated MONP synthesis and characterisation. The detailed evaluation of various synthesis processes and parameters, key influencing factors affecting the synthesis efficiency and product morphology, practical applications with insight into the associated limitations and challenges presents a valuable database that will be helpful in developing alternative prospects and potential engineering applications.

Green Biosynthesis of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Using Pluchea indica Leaf Extract: Antimicrobial and Photocatalytic Activities

Nanotechnology is playing a critical role in several essential technologies with nanoscale structures (nanoparticles) in areas of the environment and biomedicine. In this work, the leaf extract of Pluchea indica was utilized to biosynthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) for the first time and evaluated for antimicrobial and photocatalytic activities. Different experimental methods were used to characterize the biosynthesized ZnONPs. The biosynthesized ZnONPs showed maximum Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) absorbance at a wavelength of 360 nm. The X-Ray diffraction (XRD) pattern of the ZnONPs exhibits seven strong reflection peaks, and the average particle size was 21.9 nm. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) spectrum analysis reveals the presence of functional groups that help in biofabrication. The existence of Zn and O was confirmed by the Energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrum and the morphology by SEM images. Antimicrobial studies showed that the biosynthesized ZnONPs have antimicrobial efficacy against Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterococcus faecalis, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans where inhibition zones at concentration 1000 µg/mL were 21.83 ± 0.76, 13.0 ± 1.1, 14.9 ± 0.85, 24.26 ± 1.1, 17.0 ± 1.0, 20.67 ± 0.57 and 19.0 ± 1.0 mm respectively. Under both dark and sunlight irradiation, the photocatalytic activity of ZnONPs was evaluated towards the degradation of the thiazine dye (methylene blue-MB). Approximately 95% of the MB dye was broken down at pH 8 after 150 min of sunlight exposure. The aforementioned results, therefore, suggest that ZnONPs synthesized by implementing environmentally friendly techniques can be employed for a variety of environmental and biomedical applications.

Biosynthesis of Nanoparticles from Various Biological Sources and Its Biomedical Applications

In the last few decades, the broad scope of nanomedicine has played an important role in the global healthcare industry. Biological acquisition methods to obtain nanoparticles (NPs) offer a low-cost, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly approach. This review shows recent data about several methods for procuring nanoparticles and an exhaustive elucidation of biological agents such as plants, algae, bacteria, fungi, actinomycete, and yeast. When compared to the physical, chemical, and biological approaches for obtaining nanoparticles, the biological approach has significant advantages such as non-toxicity and environmental friendliness, which support their significant use in therapeutic applications. The bio-mediated, procured nanoparticles not only help researchers but also manipulate particles to provide health and safety. In addition, we examined the significant biomedical applications of nanoparticles, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, antioxidant, and other medical applications. This review highlights the findings of current research on the bio-mediated acquisition of novel NPs and scrutinizes the various methods proposed to describe them. The bio-mediated synthesis of NPs from plant extracts has several advantages, including bioavailability, environmental friendliness, and low cost. Researchers have sequenced the analysis of the biochemical mechanisms and enzyme reactions of bio-mediated acquisition as well as the determination of the bioactive compounds mediated by nanoparticle acquisition. This review is primarily concerned with collating research from researchers from a variety of disciplines that frequently provides new clarifications to serious problems.

Impacts of Binary Oxide Nanoparticles on the Soybean Plant and Its Rhizosphere, Associated Phytohormones, and Enzymes

The utilization of binary oxide nanoparticles is geometrically increasing due to their numerous applications. Their intentional or accidental release after usage has led to their omnipresence in the environment. The usage of sludge or fertilizer containing binary oxide nanoparticles is likely to increase the chance of the plants being exposed to these binary oxide nanoparticles. The aim of the present review is to assess the detailed positive and negative impacts of these oxide nanoparticles on the soybean plants and its rhizosphere. In this study, methods of synthesizing binary oxide nanoparticles, as well as the merits and demerits of these methods, are discussed. Furthermore, various methods of characterizing the binary oxide nanoparticles in the tissues of soybean are highlighted. These characterization techniques help to track the nanoparticles inside the soybean plant. In addition, the assessment of rhizosphere microbial communities of soybean that have been exposed to these binary oxide nanoparticles is discussed. The impacts of binary oxide nanoparticles on the leaf, stem, root, seeds, and rhizosphere of soybean plant are comprehensively discussed. The impacts of binary oxides on the bioactive compounds such as phytohormones are also highlighted. Overall, it was observed that the impacts of the oxide nanoparticles on the soybean, rhizosphere, and bioactive compounds were dose-dependent. Lastly, the way forward on research involving the interactions of binary oxide nanoparticles and soybean plants is suggested.

Effect of the green synthesis of CuO plate-like nanoparticles on their photodegradation and antibacterial activities

Green synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles and its effects on photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activities are reported. The synthesis of nanoparticles by green routes provides many advantages over chemical routes, including simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and fast processing route without using any costly or harmful chemicals. Tridax procumbense (coat buttons) plant root extract was used to synthesize copper oxide nanoparticles. The synthesized Tridax procumbense-copper oxide nanoparticles (TP-CuO NPs) were characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering spectroscopy (DLS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques. The synthesized TP-CuO NPs were applied for photocatalytic dye degradation and antibacterial activity studies. The TP-CuO NPs exhibited a maximum antibacterial activity at 500 μg mL^-1 concentration against Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli showing inhibition zones of 7.5 mm and 7.2 mm, respectively. The photocatalytic ability of the TP-CuO was also tested against the textile dye Trypan blue (TB), and showed about 55% degradation after 48 h for 500 μg mL^-1 CuO NP concentration, showing a concentration-dependent degradation efficiency. This is the first work on TP-derived CuO nanoparticles and their photocatalytic and antimicrobial applications. Overall, this study supports the superiority of green-synthesized TP-CuO NPs as photocatalytic and antimicrobial agents.

Recent Advances in Functionalization of Cotton Fabrics with Nanotechnology

Nowadays, consumers understand that upgrading their traditional clothing can improve their lives. In a garment fabric, comfort and functional properties are the most important features that a wearer looks for. A variety of textile technologies are being developed to meet the needs of customers. In recent years, nanotechnology has become one of the most important areas of research. Nanotechnology’s unique and useful characteristics have led to its rapid expansion in the textile industry. In the production of high-performance textiles, various finishing, coating, and manufacturing techniques are used to produce fibers or fabrics with nano sized (10⁻⁹) particles. Humans have been utilizing cotton for thousands of years, and it accounts for around 34% of all fiber production worldwide. The clothing industry, home textile industry, and healthcare industry all use it extensively. Nanotechnology can enhance cotton fabrics’ properties, including antibacterial activity, self-cleaning, UV protection, etc. Research in the field of the functionalization of nanotechnology and their integration into cotton fabrics is presented in the present study.

Biosynthesis and characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles from Mentha spicata and screening its combating potential against Phytophthora infestans

Plant pathogens cause serious diseases to agricultural crops which lead to food insecurity in the world. To combat plant pathogens, various strategies have been developed including the use of agrochemicals. The overuse of these chemicals is now leading to the pesticide-resistant capability of pathogens. To overcome this problem, modern nanobiotechnology offers the production of alternative nano drugs. In this study, we used Mentha spicata for the synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles using the green synthesis method. The synthesis of Fe2O3 NPs was confirmed through various characterizations. UV-Vis analysis detected a characteristic absorbance at the spectral range of 272 nm. The SEM micrographic analysis at various magnifications displayed circular or rod-shaped nanoparticles with a size ranging from 21 to 82 nm. The elemental EDX characterization showed intense peaks with a weight percent of 57, 34.93, and 8.07 for Fe, O, and, Cl respectively. TGA analysis showed that weight loss at 44-182, 500, and 660°C with no further modification indicates the thermal stability of iron oxide nanoparticles. FTIR spectrum of uncalined detects various bands at 3331, 1625, and 1,437 cm-1 for the hydroxyl group. After calcination two bands at 527 and 434 cm-1 were observed for Fe-O. The antimicrobial in vitro study showed maximum growth inhibition of Phytophthora infestans by the concentration of 100 μg ml-1 of Fe2O3-PE and Fe2O3 NPs. Therefore, this study resulted that bio-stable iron oxide nanoparticles can be used as alternative antimicrobial agents.

Folic Acid Determination in Food Samples Using Green Synthesized Copper Oxide Nanoparticles and Electro-Poly (Methyl Orange) Sensor

Copper (II) oxide nanoparticles (CuONPs) were green synthesized using Ocimum basilicum leaves aqueous extract in which polyphenols act as reducing and stabilizing agents. The synthesized CuONPs were characterized using X-ray diffraction spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction, and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis. The analyses indicated the formation of crystalline rod-like monoclinic pure CuONPs with a mean grain size of 15 nm, a surface area of 396 m2 g−1, and a total pore volume of 0.71 cm3 g−1. A glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified using the synthesized CuONPs and electropolymerized poly(methyl orange) (PMO). The modified PMO/CuONPs/GCE electrode was electrochemically characterized and applied for the estimation of folic acid (FA) by cyclic voltammetry, chronoamperometry, linear sweep voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry techniques. The influence of pH (7), scan rate (50 mV/s), supporting electrolyte (0.1 M KCl) and FA concentration has been optimized. FA is precisely determined in the range from 0.01 to 1.5 µΜ with a low detection limit (0.002 µΜ), a low quantitation limit (0.068 µΜ), high reproducibility (RSD 0.37, 10 measurements), and high stability (98% activity after 50 days). FA in food samples was determined by the new sensor with high recoveries from 93 to 108.8%.

Green Synthesis of Metal Oxides Semiconductors for Gas Sensing Applications

During recent decades, metal oxide semiconductors (MOS) have sparked more attention in various applications and industries due to their excellent sensing characteristics, thermal stability, abundance, and ease of synthesis. They are reliable and accurate for measuring and monitoring environmentally important toxic gases, such as NO₂, NO, N₂O, H₂S, CO, NH₃, CH₄, SO₂, and CO₂. Compared to other sensing technologies, MOS sensors are lightweight, relatively inexpensive, robust, and have high material sensitivity with fast response times. Green nanotechnology is a developing branch of nanotechnology and aims to decrease the negative effects of the production and application of nanomaterials. For this purpose, organic solvents and chemical reagents are not used to prepare metal nanoparticles. On the contrary, the synthesis of metal or metal oxide nanoparticles is done by microorganisms, either from plant extracts or fungi, yeast, algae, and bacteria. Thus, this review aims at illustrating the possible green synthesis of different metal oxides such as ZnO, TiO₂, CeO₂, SnO₂, In₂O₃, CuO, NiO, WO_3, and Fe₃O₄, as well as metallic nanoparticles doping.

Green Synthesis of Silver Oxide Nanoparticles for Photocatalytic Environmental Remediation and Biomedical Applications

Among the most notable nanotechnology applications is its employment in environmental remediation and biomedical applications. Nonetheless, there is a need for cleaner and sustainable methods in preparing nanomaterials that use cheaper, more environment-friendly precursors than the conventional synthesis process. The green chemistry approach for the preparation of nanoparticles is becoming more attractive as it uses non-toxic chemicals and reagents. It also offers cost-effective synthesis process as it uses readily available plant sources and microbe as redox mediators in converting metallic cations to metal or metal oxide nanoparticles. The extracts of these plants and microbe sources contain phytochemicals and metabolites in variable quantities, which serve as redox mediators and capping agents that stabilize the biosynthesized nanoparticles. The present article reviews the recent studies on the fabrication of silver oxide nanoparticles (Ag2O-NPs) via plant-mediated and microbe-mediated green synthesis, giving a concise discussion on the green preparation of Ag2O-NPs employing extracts of different plants and microbial sources. The performances of the biosynthesized Ag2O-NPs are also reviewed, highlighting their potential use in photocatalysis and biomedical applications.

Green Synthesis of Nanoparticles by Mushrooms: A Crucial Dimension for Sustainable Soil Management

Soil is the main component in the agroecosystem besides water, microbial communities, and cultivated plants. Several problems face soil, including soil pollution, erosion, salinization, and degradation on a global level. Many approaches have been applied to overcome these issues, such as phyto-, bio-, and nanoremediation through different soil management tools. Mushrooms can play a vital role in the soil through bio-nanoremediation, especially under the biological synthesis of nanoparticles, which could be used in the bioremediation process. This review focuses on the green synthesis of nanoparticles using mushrooms and the potential of bio-nanoremediation for polluted soils. The distinguished roles of mushrooms of soil improvement are considered a crucial dimension for sustainable soil management, which may include controlling soil erosion, improving soil aggregates, increasing soil organic matter content, enhancing the bioavailability of soil nutrients, and resorting to damaged and/or polluted soils. The field of bio-nanoremediation using mushrooms still requires further investigation, particularly regarding the sustainable management of soils.
