Abstract
Two (thieno[3,2-b]thiophene) and three annulated thiophenes (dithieno[2,3-b;3',2'-d]thiophene and dithieno[3,2-b;2',3'-d]thiophene) were employed as building blocks to synthesize linear or semi-circular chelated mononuclear biscarbene and dinuclear tetracarbene complexes. The electronic properties of the annulated thienylene chelated carbene complexes were investigated by cyclic voltammetry experiments and compared to non-chelated Fischer-type monocarbene complexes. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to assign the redox events and to probe the extent of electron delocalisation as well as the possibility of electronic (intramolecular metal-metal) communication as a result of intervalence. The differences of these electronic properties in the conjugated chelated carbene complexes are compared to chelated carbene compounds without a linear conjugated pathway.

Abstract
We have explored detailed linear and nonlinear optical properties of push-pull systems bearing thienothiophene and dithienothiophene spacers. By using density functional theory (DFT), frequency-dependent strategies were applied to examine the polarizability ([Formula: see text] and hyperpolarizability ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text]. The set of global and range-separated hybrid functionals with different Hartree–Fock (HF) exchange percentage at two basis sets cc-pVDZ and cc-pVTZ were used to evaluate the nonlinear optical (NLO) properties. The observed trends in the absorption maxima supported by perturbation potential analysis; as the absorption maxima increases, the respective amplitude potential decreases. For the investigated compounds, [Formula: see text]-conjugation along with the type of substituted acceptor plays a crucial role in the enhancement of NLO properties. The presence of acceptor group and length of conjugation increase between the D and A group; the first- and second-order intrinsic hyperpolarizability increases, leads to enhanced first- as well as second-order hyperpolarizability. Bond length alternation (BLA)/bond order alteration (BOA) exploration suggested that compounds attain cyanine limit. The trends in NLO properties for investigated compounds are supported by chemical reactivity descriptors, hardness and hyperhardness analysis. The polarizability is linearly correlated with the hyperpolarizability parameters ([Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] and shows a good regression coefficient by figures of merit analysis.

Abstract
Board-like liquid-crystalline semiconductors based on the dithieno[3,2-b;2',3'-d]thiophene (DTT) substructure were synthesized and their thermal, self-assembly, optical, and semiconducting properties investigated. These sanidic compounds, bearing eight peripheral chains, are mesomorphic and spontaneously self-assemble into columnar hexagonal mesophases (Colhex ) over broad temperature ranges, as confirmed by polarized optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and small-angle X-ray scattering. Strong blue photoluminescence with absolute quantum yields up to 33 % were measured. These compounds also form blue-light emitting gels in various organic solvents. The fibrillar-like morphology of these gels, reminiscent of the columnar structure, and stabilized by efficient intermolecular interactions, was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The charge carrier mobility of these π-extended mesogens was measured by time-of-flight transient photocurrent technique in the Colhex mesophase, and showed good hole-transport performance with charge carrier mobility of 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 .

Abstract
Four step synthesis of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes in the literature was reduced to two steps in good yields, through the preparation of the mono ketone, i.e. 1-(thiophene-3-ylthio)alkan-2-one, from 3-bromothiophene and ring formation reaction. This convenient method provides an easy access with good yields to the preparation of 3-alkylthieno[3,2-b]thiophenes, which are important materials for organic electronic and optoelectronic applications. SEM, AFM and contact angle (CA) analyses of their electropolymers on indium tin oxide (ITO) indicated that as the alkyl chains became longer, the polymers provide a more hydrophobic layer with CA up to 107°. Abstract
Low-dimensional electronic and glassy phononic transport are two important ingredients of highly efficient thermoelectric materials, from which two branches of thermoelectric research have emerged. One focuses on controlling electronic transport in the low dimension, while the other focuses on multiscale phonon engineering in the bulk. Recent work has benefited much from combining these two approaches, e.g., phonon engineering in low-dimensional materials. Here we propose to employ the low-dimensional electronic structure in bulk phonon-glass crystals as an alternative way to increase the thermoelectric efficiency. Through first-principles electronic structure calculations and classical molecular dynamics simulations, we show that the π-π-stacking bis(dithienothiophene) molecular crystal is a natural candidate for such an approach. This is determined by the nature of its chemical bonding. Without any optimization of the material parameters, we obtained a maximum room-temperature figure of merit, ZT, of 1.48 at optimal doping, thus validating our idea.
