Abstract
We present an environment-friendly and highly efficient method for the oxidation of aromatic alcohols to carboxylic acids or ketones in air via light irradiation under external catalyst-, additive-, and base-free conditions. The photoreaction system exhibits a wide substrate scope and the potential for large-scale applications. Most of the desired products are easily obtained via recrystallization and separation from low-boiling reaction medium acetone in good yields, and the products can be subsequent directly transformed without further purification.

Abstract
This paper discloses that inexpensive hydrobromic acid (HBr) is active and highly selective to the photo-oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) with dioxygen (O2) or even with water under visible light illumination, which can achieve the highest 89.1% DFF yield in DMSO at 80 °C under pure O2 atmosphere. More importantly, under bifunctional acid-photooxidation catalysis of HBr, fructose can be directly converted to DFF and its two-step cascade conversion in DMSO provides a far higher DFF yield (80.2%) than the one-step cascade conversion in MeCN (42.1%). The results of HMF photooxidation catalyzed by hydrohalic acids, free radical quenching tests and EPR spectrum support that the Br atom and superoxide (O2−˙) anion radicals generated by HBr photolysis in O2 are active species for the oxidation of HMF to DFF and their activities are adjusted by the reaction medium. This photo-synthetic protocol is very simple and practical, especially with low operating costs, showing a good industrial application prospect. HBr is a very cheap and efficient bifunctional catalyst for the synthesis of DFF from the photooxidation of HMF by O2 and from the cascade conversion of fructose via a one-step or especially the two-step protocol.![]()

Abstract
A wide range of organic and inorganic brominated compounds including molecular bromine have been extensively used as oxidants in many organic photo-redox transformations in recent years, an area of ever growing interest because of greener and milder approaches. The oxidation power of these compounds is utilized through both mechanistic pathways (by hydrogen atom transfer or HAT in the absence of a photocatalyst and a combination of single electron transfer or SET and/or HAT in the presence of a photocatalyst). Not only as terminal oxidants for regeneration of photocatalysts, but brominated reactants have also contributed to the oxidation of the reaction intermediate(s) to carry on the radical chain process in several reactions. Here in this review mainly the non-brominative oxidative product formations are discussed, carried out since the last two decades, skipping the instances where they acted as terminal oxidants only to regenerate photocatalysts. The reactions are used to generate natural products, pharmaceuticals and beyond.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bottle storage can affect color, aroma and phenolic composition of white wine. Very little information is reported about the bottle evolution during storage of white wines without added sulfites and/or using other antioxidants. This work is aimed at studying the evolution of the main enological parameters, phenolic and volatile profiles of a white wine without added sulfites, during 15 months of storage in bottle at different light and temperature conditions, compared with a control stored with sulfur dioxide. Dark storage at 12 °C (D12-S, D12-NS) and 30 °C (D30-S, D30-NS) were compared to investigate the temperature effect, meanwhile uncontrolled temperature and light condition (UTL-S, UTL-NS) simulated improper storage conditions. RESULTS Volatile acidity, absorbance at 420 nm and total phenols were higher in UTL-NS and D30-NS wines. The trans forms of hydroxycinnamic esters decreased, whereas, the cis forms, as well as caffeic acid derivatives, significantly increased in samples without added sulfites. The storage without sulfites also accelerated the hydrolysis of acetate esters. However, it did not affect most of the ethyl esters whose content remained almost the same between sulfite added (S) and no sulfite added (NS) wines. CONCLUSION The presence of sulfites in the bottle helped to preserve the volatile compounds of young wines; however, even more important seemed to be the optimal storage (dark and low temperature), as unsuitable conditions favored aroma degradation of bottled wine, regardless of sulfite protective action. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
One-electron oxidation of alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol by 1,3,5-trimethoxybenzene radical cation (TMB*+) in the excited state (TMB*+*) was observed during the two-color two-laser flash photolysis. TMB*+ was formed by the photoinduced bimolecular electron-transfer reaction from TMB to 2,3,5,6-tetrachlorobenzoquinone (TCQ) in the triplet excited-state during the first 355-nm laser flash photolysis. Then, TMB*+* was generated from the selective excitation of TMB*+ during the second 532 nm laser flash photolysis. Hole transfer rate constants from TMB*+* to methanol, ethanol, and 2-propanol were calculated to be (5.2 +/- 0.5) x 10(10), (1.4 +/- 0.3) x 10(11), and (3.2 +/- 0.6) x 10(11) M-1 s-1, respectively. The order of the hole transfer rate constants is consistent with oxidation potentials of alcohol. Formation of TCQH radical (TCQH*) with a characteristic absorption peak at 435 nm was observed in the microsecond time scale, suggesting that deprotonation of the alcohol radical cation occurs after the hole transfer and that TCQ radical anion (TCQ*-), generated together with TMB*+ by the photoinduced electron-transfer reaction, reacts with H+ to give TCQH*.
