Four different types of hydrogen bonds observed in 1,2-bis(N-benzenesulfonylamino)benzenes due to conformational properties of the sulfonamide moiety

New Bidentate N-Sulfonyl-Substituted Aromatic Amines as Chelate Ligand Backbones: Pd Catalyst Generation in C–C Coupling via In Situ and Precatalyst Modes

A series of six new, bidentate ligands based on N-(2-(R-sulfonamido)benzyl)R-sulfonamide have been isolated as dianionic or monoanionic chelators via condensation of 2-(aminomethyl)aniline with sulfonyl chloride reagents; R=methyl (1 and 1′), tolyl (2 and 2′), 2,4,6-trimethylphenyl (3), or 2,4,6-triisopropylphenyl (4). Complexes of ligands 2–4 reacted at room temperature with palladium(ii) acetate in the presence of various monodentate N-donor co-ligands to form complexes Pd2(2dmap), Pd2′(OAc.py), Pd3(2acn), Pd3(2py), Pd4(2acn), and Pd4(2py), which were structurally confirmed by three X-ray crystal analyses. Results of catalysis studies in water showed high turnover frequencies and yields of up to 98% within 10min and at 0.2 mol-% palladium catalyst loading. Relative to ligand-free catalysis in the presence of only Pd(OAc)2, the ligand-supported palladium species clearly possess positive catalytic advantage. Furthermore, Suzuki coupling efficiencies by 1:1 ‘Pd(OAc)2+ligand’ yielded notably better outcomes than for the 1:2 ‘Pd(OAc)2+ligand’ insitu catalyst generation, which reveals that coordinative saturation is undesirable. The size of the complementing monodentate co-ligand was observed to influence the catalytic efficiency such that bulkier co-ligands consistently yielded improved turnover frequency values, which leads to the conclusion that steric repulsion between the synthesised ligands and the bulkier co-ligands aided the generation of vacant coordination sites for the more active complexes. Moderate Heck coupling activity was recorded for the complexes and better activities appear to correlate with moderate bulkiness of ligand 3.

Tuning PtII -Based Donor-Acceptor Systems through Ligand Design: Effects on Frontier Orbitals, Redox Potentials, UV/Vis/NIR Absorptions, Electrochromism, and Photocatalysis

Asymmetric platinum donor-acceptor complexes [(pimp)Pt(Q2- )] are presented in this work, in which pimp=[(2,4,6-trimethylphenylimino)methyl]pyridine and Q2- =catecholate-type donor ligands. The properties of the complexes are evaluated as a function of the donor ligands, and correlations are drawn among electrochemical, optical, and theoretical data. Special focus has been put on the spectroelectrochemical investigation of the complexes featuring sulfonyl-substituted phenylendiamide ligands, which show redox-induced linkage isomerism upon oxidation. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) as well as electron flux density analysis have been employed to rationalize the optical spectra of the complexes and their reactivity. Compound 1 ([(pimp)Pt(Q2- )] with Q2- =3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate) was shown to be an efficient photosensitizer for molecular oxygen and was subsequently employed in photochemical cross-dehydrogenative coupling (CDC) reactions. The results thus display new avenues for donor-acceptor systems, including their role as photocatalysts for organic transformations, and the possibility to introduce redox-induced linkage isomerism in these compounds through the use of sulfonamide substituents on the donor ligands.

Ultrasound-promoted solvent-free aza-Michael addition of p-toluenesulfonamide to fumaric esters by potassium carbonate: Synthesis of p-toluenesulfonamide derivatives

An efficient, mild, inexpensive and eco-friendly protocol for the synthesis of p-toluenesulfonamide derivatives by aza-Michael addition reaction of p-toluenesulfonamide to fumaric esters using potassium carbonate under ultrasound irradiation was developed. This method is simple, convenient and the desired compounds are produced in good to excellent yield. The bulkiness of alkoxy group (-OR) of fumaric esters did not affect significantly on the yields and reaction times. This reaction worked well on linear and nonlinear alkyl fumarates. The reaction, surprisingly, was not successful on methyl fumarate. In this case methyl fumarate has been hydrolyzed to fumaric acid under reaction conditions.

Phosphine-initiated general base catalysis: facile access to benzannulated 1,3-diheteroatom five-membered rings via double-Michael reactions of allenes

General base-catalyzed double-Michael reactions of allenes with various dinucleophiles are described. The reactions are facilitated most efficiently by a catalytic amount of trimethylphosphine, affording six types of C2-functionalized benzannulated five-membered heterocycles: benzimidazolines, benzoxazolines, benzothiazolines, 1,3-benzodioxoles, 1,3-benzoxathioles, and 1,3-benzodithioles. This atom-economical reaction is operationally simple and provides the product heterocycles in good to excellent yields. Careful mechanistic studies unveiled the phosphine-triggered general base catalysis pathway. Furthermore, the double-Michael reaction can serve as an alternative method for the selective monoketalization of β-diketones.

Synthesis and structure of "16-electron" rhodium(III) catalysts fortransfer hydrogenation of a cyclic imine: mechanistic implications

Significant Rh-NH p-bonding in formally 16-electron(eta5-C5Me5)Rh(XNC6H4NX') (X, X' = H or Ts) is shownby structural features and by DFT calculations;(eta5-C5Me5)Rh(TsNC6H4NH) is the fastest transfer hydrogenationcatalyst of the three complexes and generates a formate complexunder catalytic conditions.
