Abstract
The reaction of the rhodium aqua-complex (S Rh,R C)-[Cp*Rh{(R)-Prophos} (OH2)][SbF6]2 [Cp* = C5Me5, Prophos = propane-1,2-diyl-bis(diphenylphosphane)] (1) with trans-4-methylthio-β-nitrostyrene (MTNS) gives two linkage isomers (S Rh,R C)-[Cp*Rh{(R)-Prophos}(κ1 O-MTNS)]2+ (3-O) and (S Rh,R C)-[Cp*Rh{(R)-Prophos}(κ1 S-MTNS)]2+ (3-S) in which the nitrostyrene binds the metal through one of the oxygen atoms of the nitro group or through the sulfur atom, respectively. Both isomers are in equilibrium in dichloromethane solution, the equilibrium constant being affected by the temperature in such a way that when the temperature increases, the relative concentration of the oxygen-bonded isomer 3-O increases. The homologue aqua-complex of iridium, (S Ir,R C)-[Cp*Ir{(R)-Prophos}(OH2)][SbF6]2 (2), also reacts with MTNS; but only the sulfur-coordinated isomer (S Ir,R C)-[Cp*Ir{(R)-Prophos}(κ1 S-MTNS)]2+ (4-S) is detected in the solution by NMR spectroscopy. The crystal structures of 3-S and 4-S have been elucidated by X-ray diffractometric methods. Complexes 1 and 2 catalyze the Friedel-Crafts reaction of indole, N-methylindole, 2-methylindole, or N-methyl-2-methylindole with MTNS. Up to 93% ee has been achieved for N-methyl-2-methylindole. With this indole, the ee increases as conversion increases, ee at 263 K is lower than that obtained at 298 K, and the sign of the chirality of the major enantiomer changes at temperatures below 263 K. Detection and characterization of the catalytic intermediates metal-aci-nitro and the free aci-nitro compound as well as detection of the Friedel-Crafts (FC)-adduct complex involved in the catalysis allowed us to propose a plausible double cycle that accounts for the catalytic observations.

Abstract
A conformationally rigid chiral bicyclic skeleton tethered bipyridine-Zn(OTf)2 complex facilitated the enantioselective Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indoles with trans-β-nitroarylalkenes in an enantioselective manner at elevated temperature. Indoles reacted smoothly with β-nitroarylalkenes to generate the corresponding 3-(2-nitroalkyl)indoles in good to excellent yields (up to 94%) with moderate to excellent enantioselectivities (up to 91%). The stereochemical outcome of the product from indole and trans-β-nitrostyrene in the presence of the CRCB tethered bipyridine-Zn(OTf)2 complex and the DFT calculation of the CRCB tethered bipyridine-Zn:trans-β-nitrostyrene complex support the si-face attack of indole on trans-β-nitrostyrene.

Abstract
A chiral bis(imidazolidine)pyridine (PyBidine)-Ni(OTf)2 complex smoothly catalyzed an asymmetric Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2-vinylindoles with nitroalkenes to give chiral indoles in a highly enantioselective manner while maintaining the 2-vinyl functionality. The chiral 2-vinylindoles offer unique chiral scaffolds for diverse transformations.

Abstract
A novel strategy based on phase transfer catalysis for the diastereoselective and enantioselective direct assembly of unsymmetric β,β-diaryl-α-amino acid esters via 1,6-conjugate addition of para-quinone methides and glycine derivatives is described. This protocol also provides an alternative route to the synthetically interesting functionalized chiral tetrahydroisoquinoline and its analogues.

Abstract
We report a concise, enantio- and diastereoselective route to novel nonsymmetrically substituted N-protected β,β-diaryl-α-amino acids and esters, through the asymmetric hydrogenation of tetrasubstituted olefins, some of the most challenging examples in the field. Stereoselective generation of an E- or Z-enol tosylate, when combined with stereoretentive Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and enantioselective hydrogenation catalyzed by (NBD)2RhBF4 and a Josiphos ligand, allows for full control over the two vicinal stereogenic centers. High yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) were obtained for a variety of N-acetyl, N-methoxycarbonyl, and N-Boc β,β-diaryldehydroamino acids, containing a diverse and previously unreported series of heterocyclic and aryl substituted groups (24 examples) and allowing access to all four stereoisomers of these valuable building blocks.

Abstract
The tandem Friedel-Crafts conjugate addition/asymmetric protonation reaction between 2-substituted indoles and methyl 2-acetamidoacrylate is reported. The reaction is catalyzed by (R)-3,3'-dibromo-BINOL in the presence of stoichiometric SnCl(4), and is the first example of a tandem conjugate addition/asymmetric protonation reaction using a BINOL·SnCl(4) complex as the catalyst. A range of indoles furnished synthetic tryptophan derivatives in good yields and high levels of enantioselectivity, even on a preparative scale. The convergent nature of this transformation should lend itself to the preparation of unnatural tryptophan derivatives for use in a broad array of synthetic and biological applications.

Abstract
A Brønsted base-catalyzed reaction of nitroalkanes with alkyl electrophiles provides indole heterocycles substituted at C3 bearing a sec-alkyl group with good enantioselectivity (up to 90% ee). Denitration by hydrogenolysis provides a product with equally high ee. An indolenine intermediate is implicated in the addition step, and surprisingly, water cosolvent was found to have a beneficial effect in this step, leading to a one-pot protocol for elimination/enantioselective addition using PBAM, a bis(amidine) chiral nonracemic base.

Abstract
A variety of heterocyclic alcohols and acetates were coupled with silyl ketene acetals and other π-nucleophiles in the presence of trimethylsilyl trifluoromethanesulfonate to provide an array of substituted β-heteroaryl propionates, including those with contiguous quaternary centers, as well as vinylogs thereof. This reaction also proceeds with high diastereoselectivity when the π-nucleophile bears a chiral auxiliary.
