Abstract
In this account, we describe the synthesis of a series of BINOL-based bis- and trisphosphoric acids 11d/e/f, which commonly feature an unusual phosphoric acid monoester motif. This motif is generated by an acid-catalyzed 5- endo- dig cyclization of the 3-alkynyl-substituted BINOL precursors to give the corresponding Furan-annelated derivatives, followed by phosphorylation of the remaining phenolic alcohols. In the cyclization reaction, we observed an unexpected partial racemization in the bis- and tris-BINOL scaffolds, leading to mixtures of diastereomers that were separated and characterized spectroscopically and by X-ray crystal structure analyses. The cyclization and racemization processes were investigated both experimentally and by DFT-calculations, showing that although the cyclization proceeds faster, the barrier for the acid-catalyzed binaphthyl-racemization is only slightly higher.

Abstract
Synthesis, structure, and physical properties of a novel 11-methylbenzo[d]pyreno[4,5-b]furan (BPF) and its self-assembly in water have been reported. The performance of nanowire-based films in organic light-emitting diodes is much better than that of the thin film deposited by directly drop-coating BPF molecules in THF solution. SEM study indicates that the well-organized structure (nanowires) is an important factor in enhancing the performance of OLED devices.

Abstract
An efficient synthetic approach to construct a fully substituted benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']difuran (BDF) 2a via base-catalyzed double annulations is presented. Compound 2a can readily undergo Suzuki, Heck, and Sonogashira coupling reactions to afford in good yields a manifold of extended pi-conjugated BDF derivatives, e.g., with pyridine termini (4-6) and with different spacers. These are highly luminescent materials that undergo two reversible one-electron oxidations. Remarkably, their photophysical and electrochemical properties can be largely tuned by methylation or protonation. Consequently, they can function as pH-dependent fluorescence switches. Finally, the observed electronic properties are explained on the basis of density functional theory.
