Abstract
Two new rhodamine B-based fluorescent probes PyRbS and PyRbO containing pyrene moiety were designed and synthesized. Both of the probes showed colorimetric and fluorometric sensing abilities for Hg(2+) with high selectivity over other metal ions. The binding analysis using Job's plot suggested 1:1 stoichiometry for the complexes formed for Hg(2+). Compared with PyRbO, the PyRbS showed higher selectivity and sensitivity due to the thiophilic property of Hg(2+) ion. The PyRbS exhibited the linear fluorescence quenching to Hg(2+) in the range of 0.3 to 4.8 μM (λ(ex)=365 nm) and 0.3 to 5.4 μM (λ(ex)=515 nm), and the detection limit was 0.72 μM. Moreover, ratiometric changes of PyRbS with Hg(2+) in absorption spectrum were observed, which could not be obtained in the combination of PyRbO with Hg(2+). In addition, the methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay demonstrated that RbPyS had low cytotoxicity and was successfully used to monitor intracellular Hg(2+) levels in living cells.

Abstract
On the basis of fluorescent resonance energy transfer, a new fluorophore dyad (L) bearing rhodamine B and naphthalimide was developed as fluorescent ratiometric chemosensor for Hg(2+) in aqueous solution. L exhibited high selectivity and excellent sensitivity towards Hg(2+) with a broad pH span (1.0-8.0) and the detection limit of L was 2.11×10(-8) M. Sensor L for the detection of Hg(2+) was rapid and the recognizing event could complete in 2.5 min. A significant change in the color could be used for naked-eye detection. The selective fluorescence response of L to Hg(2+) is due to the Hg(2+)-promoted ring opening of spirolactam of rhodamine moiety, leading to a cyclization reaction of thiourea moiety. In addition, fluorescence imaging experiments of Hg(2+) in living EC 109 cells demonstrated its value of practical applications in biological systems.

Abstract
The monoazo dyes, 4-carboxyl-2, 6-dinitrophenylazohydroxynaphthalenes dyes (AZ-01, AZ-03 and AZ-04), were evaluated as a highly selective colorimetric chemosensor for cyanide ion. The recognition of cyanide ion gave an obvious colour change from light yellow to brownish red and upon dilution with acetone produced a purple to lilac colour. Optimum conditions for the reaction between the azo dyes and cyanide ion were established at 30°C for 5 min, and different variables affecting the reaction were carefully studied and optimised. Under the optimum conditions, linear relationships between the CN(-) concentrations and light absorption were established. Using these azo-hydrazone molecular switch entities, excellent selectivity towards the detection of CN(-) in aqueous solution over miscellaneous competitive anions was observed. Such selectivity mainly results from the possibility of nucleophilic attack on the azo-hydrazone chemosensors by cyanide anions in aqueous system, which is not afforded by other competing anions. The cyanide chemosensor method described here should have potential application as a new family probes for detecting cyanide in aqueous solution.
