Abstract
Amino acids with unusual types of chirality and their derivatives have recently attracted attention as precursors in the synthesis of chiral catalysts and peptide analogues with unique properties. In this study, we have synthesized a new nido-carborane-based planar-chiral amino acid, in the molecule of which the amino group is directly bonded to the B(3) atom, and the carboxyl group is attached to the B(9) atom through the CH2S+(Me) fragment. 3-Amino-9-dimethylsulfonio-nido-carborane, prepared in three steps from 3-amino-closo-carborane in a high yield, was a key intermediate in the synthesis of the target planar-chiral amino acid. The carboxymethyl group at the sulfur atom was introduced by the demethylation reaction of the dimethylsulfonio derivative, followed by S-alkylation. The structure of new 3,9-disubstituted nido-carboranes was studied for the first time using NMR spectroscopy. The resonances of all boron atoms in the 11B NMR spectrum of 3-amino-9-dimethylsulfonio-nido-carborane were assigned based on the 2D NMR correlation experiments. The nido-carborane-based planar-chiral amino acid and related compounds are of interest as a basis for peptide-like compounds and chiral ligands.

Separation of enantiomers of chiral fullerene derivatives through enantioselective encapsulation within an adaptable helical cavity of syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) with helicity memory. Abstract
Optically active left (M)- and right (P)-handed helical syndiotactic poly(methyl methacrylate)s (M- and P-st-PMMAs) with a helicity memory enantioselectively encapsulated the racemic C60 derivatives, such as 3,4-fulleroproline tert-butyl ester (rac-1) and tetraallylated C60 (rac-2), as well as the C60-bound racemic 310-helical peptides (rac-3) within their helical cavities to form peapod-like inclusion complexes and a unique "helix-in-helix" superstructure, respectively. The enantiomeric excess (ee) and separation factor (enantioselectivity) (α) of the analyte 1 (ee = 23%-25% and α = 2.35-2.50) encapsulated within the helical cavities of the M- and P-st-PMMAs were higher than those of the analytes 2 and 3 (ee = 4.3%-6.0% and α = 1.28-1.50). The optically pure (S)- and (R)-1 were found to more efficiently induce an excess one-handed helical conformation in the st-PMMA backbone than the optically pure (S)- and (R)-1-phenylethylamine, resulting in intense mirror-image vibrational circular dichroism (VCD) spectra in the PMMA IR regions. The excess one-handed helices induced in the st-PMMAs complexed with (S)- and (R)-1 were memorized after replacement with the achiral C60, and the complexes exhibited induced electric CDs in the achiral C60 chromophore regions.

Abstract
A totally unanticipated regio- and stereoisomerically pure C2h -symmetric trans-1-(bis-pyrrolidine)-tetra-malonate hexa-adduct of C60 was obtained via a topologically controlled method, followed by a 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition reaction. The structures of the products were elucidated by 1 H and 13 C NMR and by X-ray crystallography. The unexpected regio- and stereoselectivity observed, supported by theoretical calculations, was found to be a consequence of malonate-pyrrolidine interactions.

Abstract
A series of novel highly soluble double-caged [60]fullerene derivatives were prepared by means of lithium-salt-assisted [2+3] cycloaddition. The bispheric molecules feature rigid linking of the fullerene spheres through a four-membered cycle and a pyrrolizidine bridge with an ester function CO2 R (R=n-decyl, n-octadecyl, benzyl, and n-butyl; compounds 1 a-d, respectively), as demonstrated by NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Cyclic voltammetry studies revealed three closely overlapping pairs of reversible peaks owing to consecutive one-electron reductions of fullerene cages, as well as an irreversible oxidation peak attributed to abstraction of an electron from the nitrogen lone-electron pair. Owing to charge delocalization over both carbon cages, compounds 1 a-d are characterized by upshifted energies of frontier molecular orbitals, a narrowed bandgap, and reduced electron-transfer reorganization energy relative to pristine C60 . Neat thin films of the n-decyl compound 1 a demonstrated electron mobility of (1.3±0.4)×10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which was comparable to phenyl-C61 -butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) and thus potentially advantageous for organic solar cells (OSC). Application of 1 in OSC allowed a twofold increase in the power conversion efficiencies of as-cast poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT)/1 devices relative to the as-cast P3HT/PCBM ones. This is attributed to the good solubility of 1 and their enhanced charge-transport properties - both intramolecular, owing to tightly linked fullerene cages, and intermolecular, owing to the large number of close contacts between the neighboring double-caged molecules. Test P3HT/1 OSCs demonstrated power-conversion efficiencies up to 2.6 % (1 a). Surprisingly low optimal content of double-caged fullerene acceptor 1 in the photoactive layer (≈30 wt %) favored better light harvesting and carrier transport owing to the greater content of P3HT and its higher degree of crystallinity.
