Abstract
We report a systematic study of the gelation behavior of nBA gelators in xylene, with odd and even n-methylene spacers between the amide groups (n = 5-10) and 17 carbons at each end. The melting temperatures (Tm0) of nBA gels are obtained from fitting our DSCN(T) model to the experimental DSC data. The found Tm0 of nBA gels is about 35 °C lower than Tm0 of the pure nBA gelators. This is reasonably well explained by a simple model combining theories of Flory-Huggins and Gibbs free energy of melting (FHM model). We attribute this depression to an increase in entropy upon melting of the gel due to mixing with the solvent. The odd-even alternation in Tm0 of nBA gels, which was also found for the nBA gelators, indicates that the solid structures inside the gels are somewhat similar. This was studied using XRD: similar 00l reflections were found in the XRD patterns of all nBA gels and their nBA gelators. For even nBA gels, the same reflections in the 19-25° (2θ) region confirm that the sheetlike supramolecular structure of the gels is analogous to the lamellar structure of the solid gelators. For odd nBA gels, a slight difference in the reflections around 20-25° (2θ) implies a somewhat different side-by-side packing of odd nBA gels compared to the solid state. This variation is found for all the odd gels, and indeed, they show distinctly different morphologies compared to the even nBA gels. The possible effect of this on the rheological properties is discussed using some inspiration from the Halpin-Tsai model for composites where nBA gels are considered to be analogous to composite materials. The change of the storage modulus (G') with the shape factor of woven fibers and sheets in nBA gels (20 wt %) indicates that a rheological odd-even effect might indeed be present.

Abstract
Chiral cylindrical molecular complexes of homo- and hetero-double-helices derived from helicene oligomers self-assemble in solution, providing functional heterogeneous liquid-solid materials. Gels and liotropic liquid crystals are formed by fibril self-assembly in solution; molecular monolayers and fibril films are formed by self-assembly on solid surfaces; gels containing gold nanoparticles emit light; silica nanoparticles aggregate and adsorb double-helices. Notable dynamics appears during self-assembly, including multistep self-assembly, solid surface catalyzed double-helix formation, sigmoidal and stairwise kinetics, molecular recognition of nanoparticles, discontinuous self-assembly, materials clocking, chiral symmetry breaking and homogeneous-heterogeneous transitions. These phenomena are derived from strong intercomplex interactions of chiral cylindrical molecular complexes.

Abstract
Here we report the generation of a novel gelator from a glycosylated amino acid derivative, which contained three structural units, an aromatic residue, a carbohydrate moiety and a tert-butyl group in a single molecule. These structural units can promote the supramolecular self-assembly of this gelator in both aprotic and protic solvents via coordinated π-π stacking, multiple hydrogen binding and van der Waals interactions. More importantly, due to their non-equilibrium natures, the organogels formed in DCM, chloroform and ethanol can undergo gel to crystal transition in storage, driven by unbalanced gelator-gelator and solvent-gelator interactions. In this process, the gelators were firstly trapped in a kinetically favorable gel state, and then transferred into a more thermodynamically stable crystal state upon ageing, with the generation of microcrystals in different morphologies.

Abstract
An electrochemical biosensor based on an immobilized anthraquinone-labeled pyrrolidinyl peptide nucleic acid (acpcPNA) probe was successfully developed for the selective detection of human papillomavirus (HPV) type 16 DNA. A 14-mer acpcPNA capture probe was designed to recognize a specific 14 nucleotide region of HPV type 16 L1 gene. The redox-active label anthraquinone (AQ) was covalently attached to the N-terminus of the acpcPNA probe through an amide bond. The probe was immobilized onto a chitosan-modified disposable screen-printed carbon electrode via a C-terminal lysine residue using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linking agent. Hybridization with the target DNA was studied by measuring the electrochemical signal response of the AQ label using square-wave voltammetric analysis. The calibration curve exhibited a linear range between 0.02 and 12.0 µM with a limit of detection and limit of quantitation of 4 and 14 nM, respectively. This DNA sensing platform was successfully applied to detect the HPV type 16 DNA from a PCR amplified (240 bp fragment of the L1 gene) sample derived from the HPV type 16 positive human cancer cell line (SiHa), and failed to detect the HPV-negative c33a cell line. The sensor probe exhibited very high selectivity for the complementary 14 base oligonucleotide over the non-complementary oligonucleotides with sequences derived from HPV types 18, 31 and 33. The proposed sensor provides an inexpensive tool for the early stage detection of HPV type 16, which is an important biomarker for cervical cancer.

Abstract
In this paper, new bolaform cholesteryl imide derivatives with different spacers were designed and synthesized. Their gelation behaviors in 23 solvents were investigated, and some of them were found to be low molecular mass organic gelators. The experimental results indicated that these as-formed organogels can be regulated by changing the flexible/rigid segments in spacers and organic solvents. Suitable combination of flexible/rigid segments in molecular spacers in the present cholesteryl gelators is favorable for the gelation of organic solvents. Scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy observations revealed that the gelator molecules self-assemble into different aggregates, from wrinkle and belt to fiber with the change of spacers and solvents. Spectral studies indicated that there existed different H-bond formations between imide groups and assembly modes, depending on the substituent spacers in molecular skeletons. The present work may give some insight into the design and character of new organogelators and soft materials with special molecular structures.

Abstract
Luminol is considered as an efficient sycpstem in electrochemiluminescence (ECL) measurements for the detection of hydrogen peroxide. In this paper, new luminol imide derivatives with different alkyl substituent chains were designed and synthesized. Their gelation behaviors in 26 solvents were tested as novel low molecular mass organic gelators. It was shown that the length and number of alkyl substituent chains linked to a benzene ring in gelators played a crucial role in the gelation behavior of all compounds in various organic solvents. Longer alkyl chains in molecular skeletons in present gelators are favorable for the gelation of organic solvents. Scanning electron microscope and atomic force microscope observations revealed that the gelator molecules self-assemble into different micro/nanoscale aggregates from a dot, flower, belt, rod, and lamella to wrinkle with change of solvents. Spectral studies indicated that there existed different H-bond formations and hydrophobic forces, depending on the alkyl substituent chains in molecular skeletons. The present work may give some insight to the design and characteristic of new versatile soft materials and potential ECL biosensors with special molecular structures.

Abstract
The relationship between thermodynamic dissolution parameters (enthalpy and entropy) and gelation ability was examined for two different classes of compounds in three different solvent systems. In total, 11 dipeptides and 19 pyridines were synthesized and screened for gelation in aqueous and organic solvents, respectively. The dissolution parameters were determined from the variable-temperature solubilities using the van't Hoff equation. These studies revealed that the majority of gelators had higher dissolution enthalpies and entropies compared to nongelators, consistent with the notion that gelators have stronger intermolecular interactions and more order in the solid state. The dissolution parameters were also found to be solvent-dependent, suggesting that solvent-solute interactions are also important in gelation. Overall, these results indicate that converting nongelators into gelators is attainable when structural modifications or a change in solvent lead to increases in the dissolution parameters.
