Abstract
The enantioselective conjugate addition of malonates to α,β-unsaturated aldehydes catalysed by 4-oxalocrotonate tautomerase is described. High conversions, high enantioselectivities, and good isolation yields were achieved for a range of substrates. We further completed a four-step synthesis of the antidepressant (+)-femoxetine by utilizing this reaction and an enzymatic reductive amination reaction.

Abstract
Asymmetric hydrogenation of tetrasubstituted alkenes remains a formidable challenge in asymmetric catalysis. We report herein an unprecedented Rh-catalyzed enantioselective and diastereoselective hydrogenation of easily accessed α,β-disubstituted unsaturated lactams to afford synthetically valuable chiral lactams with 1,2-consecutive stereocenters. The reaction could be performed on the gram scale, and the products could be concisely transformed to enantiomerically pure trans-3,4-disubstituted piperidines, which are prevalent structural units in medicinal agents.

Abstract
The present study reports the asymmetric cyclization of enals with vinylcyclopropane azlactones efficiently catalyzed by the combination of achiral Pd(0) complexes and chiral secondary amines. Corresponding spirocyclic azlactones were produced in high yields with moderate diastereoselectivities and excellent enantioselectivities. This protocol provides an efficient and easily-performed route to spirocyclic scaffolds, and densely functionalized cyclopentanes containing quaternary carbon centers.

Abstract
Pyrrolidine-oxadiazolone based organocatalysts are envisaged, synthesized, and utilized for asymmetric Michael reactions. Results of the investigations suggest that some of the catalysts are indeed efficient for stereoselective 1,4-conjugated Michael additions (dr: >97:3, ee up to 99%) in high chemical yields (up to 97%) often in short reaction time. As an extension, one enantiopure Michael adduct has been utilized to synthesize optically active octahydroindole.

Abstract
A highly enantioselective tandem Michael/ring-closure reaction of α,β-unsaturated pyrazoleamides and amidomalonates has been accomplished in the presence of a chiral N,N'-dioxide-Yb(OTf)3 complex (Tf: trifluoromethanesulfonyl) to give various substituted chiral glutarimides with high yields and diastereo- and enantioselectivities. Moreover, this methodology could be used for gram-scale manipulation and was successfully applied to the synthesis of (-)-paroxetine. Further nonlinear and HRMS studies revealed that the real catalytically active species was a monomeric L-PMe2 -Yb3+ complex. A plausible transition state was proposed to explain the origin of the asymmetric induction.

Abstract
In the present paper we report our latest efforts in pushing the boundaries of synergistic catalysis. We propose the use of 3 different catalytic cycles working in concert for the formation of cis cyclopropane derivatives of benzoxazoles with excellent stereoselectivities. This is the proof of concept that synergistic catalysis could be successfully used in cascade reactions.

Abstract
Chiral piperidines which contain an alkyl group at C4 positions are one of the important architectures because it is appeared in several natural products. An efficient protocol for the preparation of C4-alkyl substituted chiral piperidines using secondary amine catalyzed formal aza [3+3] cycloaddition reaction with aliphatic α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and thiomalonamate derivatives is reported. In our reaction system, thiomalonamate is an excellent nucleophile and the addition of suitable acid and its amount is an important factor for the acceleration effect in organocatalytic reaction. Furthermore, water and MeOH also have an acceleration effect. These efforts lead to only 0.1 mol % catalyst loading in multigram scale synthesis for suitable reaction time. In addition, the efficient enantioselective total synthesis of (+)-α-skytanthine by using our developed reaction as key step was achieved in total 15 % yield. Abstract
An expedited method has been developed for the diastereoselective synthesis of highly functionalized alkyl-azaarene systems with good yields and high diastereoselectivities (>15 : 1 dr). The methodology includes a synergistic catalysis event involving organometallic (10 mol% AgOAc) activation of an alkyl azaarene and Lewis base (10 mol% DABCO) activation of a Morita-Baylis-Hillman carbonate. The structure and relative configuration of a representative product were confirmed by X-ray analysis.

Abstract
A novel catalytic enantioselective methodology based on synergistic catalysis is reported. The strategy involves: 1) the metal-Lewis-acid activation of alkylazaarenes, and 2) the secondary-amine activation of enals. Consequently, highly functionalized chiral alkylazaarenes were obtained in good yields and with reasonable stereoselectivity.

Abstract
A total synthesis of paroxetine is reported, with a diastereoselective and diastereoconvergent cobalt-catalysed sp3-sp2 coupling reaction involving a 3-substituted 4-bromo-N-Boc-piperidine (Boc = tert-butoxycarbonyl) substrate as a key step. A 9:1 diastereoselectivity was obtained, while a control experiment involving a conformationally locked 3-substituted 4-bromo-tert-butyl cyclohexane ring proceeded with essentially complete stereoselectivity.
