Rapid, Sensitive, and Selective "ON-OFF" Detection of Fe3+ Ions Using Novel Acetalophanes and Their Applications in Real Samples

Three novel acetalophanes 1a-c have been designed, synthesized and characterized. The receptors 1b-c, featuring bulky anthracene groups, displayed significant selectivity for Fe3+ ions, resulting in a turn-off fluorescence mode in a DMF-buffer solution. Conversely, the non-steric probe 1a could serve as a versatile sensor for the simultaneous detection of Fe3+ and Cu2+ ions in MeOH-buffer solution. The sensing mechanism for the capability of 1a was demonstrated to be different, as evidenced by the addition of cyanide ions. The probes with Fe3+ exhibited a sensing mechanism that resulted in the deprotection of acetals to the corresponding starting materials, as confirmed by 1H NMR, IR spectra and TLC analysis. The attractive features of these practical and efficient sensors are selectivity, sensitivity (limit of detection = 0.15 µM by 1a, 0.16 µM by 1b and 0.14 µM by 1c), rapid response (less than 5 s). The on-site monitoring of various real samples, including well water, apricot, and green tea, proved to be successful for the quantitative and cost-effective detection of Fe3+. The method demonstrated good precision, even in the presence of other interfering materials.

Hydrogen bond regulated hydrogen sulfate ion recognition: an overview

Hydrogen sulfate possesses substantial biological importance, having a colossal impact on physiological and environmental events. Therefore, several scientific groups have devoted serious effort to the development of versatile colorimetric and fluorimetric HSO4- sensors. Along with the scope, challenges, and significance, this review emphasizes the advancement of the optical recognition of HSO4- based on hydrogen bonding during the past two decades. Moreover, hydrogen-bond-driven proton transfer, ESIPT, ICT, PET, CHEF, and TBET mechanisms that allow for the optical detection of HSO4- are also discussed concisely. The foundation of this review includes the key points of the sensing process, like the nature of spectroscopic changes, selectivity and sensitivity, naked-eye color changes, the reusability of sensors, and the in vivo detection of HSO4-, if any. Special attention is focused on the correlation between the photophysical changes and the underlying interaction mechanisms that triggered the recognition aspect.

Siderophores for medical applications: Imaging, sensors, and therapeutics

Siderophores are low-molecular-weight chelators produced by microorganisms to scavenge iron from the environment and deliver it to cells via specific receptors. Tremendous researches on the molecular basis of siderophore regulation, synthesis, secretion, and uptake have inspired their diverse applications in the medical field. Replacing iron with radionuclides in siderophores, such as the most prominent Ga-68 for positron emission tomography (PET), carves out ways for targeted imaging of infectious diseases and cancers. Additionally, the high affinity of siderophores for metal ions or microorganisms makes them a potent detecting moiety in sensors that can be used for diagnosis. As for therapeutics, the notable Trojan horse-inspired siderophore-antibiotic conjugates demonstrate enhanced toxicity against multi-drug resistant (MDR) pathogens. Besides, siderophores can tackle iron overload diseases and, when combined with moieties such as hydrogels and nanoparticles, a wide spectrum of iron-induced diseases and even cancers. In this review, we briefly outline the related mechanisms, before summarizing the siderophore-based applications in imaging, sensors, and therapeutics.

Isatin as a 2-aminobenzaldehyde surrogate: transition metal-free efficient synthesis of 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazole derivatives

A transition metal-free, convenient, and efficient practical approach has been devised for the synthesis of substituted 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazoles via a sulfur insertion strategy using isatin derivatives as 2-aminobenzaldehyde surrogates. KI assisted one-pot operation of isatin, arylamines and elemental sulfur resulted in the formation of a C-N and two C-S bonds and cascade cleavage of the isatin ring resulting in the formation of 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazoles. The significant features of this strategy are the readily available and inexpensive starting materials, broad substrate scope, sustainable reaction conditions and high yield of products. Importantly, the strategy was found to be appropriate for gram scale synthesis (>10 g) of 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazole derivatives. Moreover, the excellent photophysical properties (ΦF up to 60%) of 2-(2'-aminophenyl)benzothiazole derivatives provide huge scope in materials science.

Estimation of bisulfate in edible plant foods, dog urine, and drugs: picomolar level detection and bio-imaging in living organisms

In order to explore the properties of any species in solution, the actual, i.e. equilibrium concentration of the free species should be taken into account. Researchers have not paid attention to the deprotonation equilibrium between HSO4- and SO42- while probing bisulfate ion. In this study, we have addressed this concern and developed two zwitterions, CG (coumarin-integrated glycine) and CA (coumarin-integrated alanine), for the selective detection of HSO4- at a picomolar level (50 to 325 pM) with very high binding affinity (∼108 M-1) in pure water at physiological pH. The principle of HSO4- recognition was established via UV-vis and fluorescence techniques. DFT calculations suggested that the H-bonding interactions between the probes and HSO4- are the driving force for this unforeseen selectivity. The membrane penetration ability and nontoxicity of CG/CA enable them to function as staining agents in living brine shrimps and bacteria. The use of these probes for the estimation of HSO4- in various day-to-day edible foods and drugs along with urine samples is unprecedented. The significance and novelty of this study lies in the application and development of assays for estimating bisulfate in several real-world samples that are predominantly aqueous in nature, which are the first of their kind.

A multiple target chemosensor for the sequential fluorescence detection of Zn2+ and S2− and the colorimetric detection of Fe3+/2+ in aqueous media and living cells

A novel multiple target sensor DHIC was developed for the fluorescence detection of Zn²⁺ and S²⁻ and colorimetric detection of Fe^3+/2+. Moreover, DHIC could image sequentially Zn²⁺ and S²⁻ in living cells.

Synthesis and fluorescence spectral studies of novel quinolylbenzothiazole-based sensors for selective detection of Fe3+ ion

Four novel fluorescence sensors bearing a quinolylbenzothiazole platform were synthesized and characterized. The sensors displayed excellent selectivity and highly sensitive fluorescence response to Fe3+ ion in H2O/DMSO buffer solution (1:4 volume ratio; Tris-HCl, 0.01 mol/L; pH = 7.40) at 500 nm originating from quinolylbenzothiazole fluorophore group. Other cations, namely Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+, Ca2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Zn2+, Mn2+, Ba2+, Pb2+, Hg2+, Al3+, and Eu3+, showed no appreciable change in fluorescence spectrum. The binding stoichiometry between sensors L1, L2, L3, or L4 and Fe3+ was observed to be 1:1 based on fluorescence titration and Jobs plot analysis. The detection limits of L1, L2, L3, and L4 for Fe3+ were found to be 0.155, 0.362, 0.249, and 0.517 μmol/L, respectively. Furthermore, possible utilization of sensors to detect Fe3+ in living HeLa cells was also investigated by confocal fluorescence microscopy.

Design strategies for lab-on-a-molecule probes and orthogonal sensing

This review highlights the currently exploited working concepts of lab-on-a-molecule probes, with a particular focus on what is required for multianalyte detection and quantification in competitive assays. Both, chemosensor and chemodosimeter approaches are considered. The multifaceted design strategies and the orthogonal protocols are evaluated in order to identify and categorise the successful conceptions and to single out unknown territory and challenges for future work.

A new pyrene-based Schiff-base: a selective colorimetric and fluorescent chemosensor for detection of Cu(II) and Fe(III)

A new receptor 1 was prepared, for the detection of Cu2+ and Fe3+ in solutions as a colorimetric and fluorescent sensor, respectively. Receptor 1 shows highly selective and sensitive recognition toward Cu2+ and Fe3+ by naked eye UV-Vis and fluorescent color changes in aqueous solution (DMSO/H2O=8/2, v/v), respectively. The sensitivity toward Cu2+ or Fe3+ was not interfered with by the presence of other metal ions such as Mg2+, Cd2+, Ag+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Co2+, Mn2+, Cr3+, Ca2+, Na+, Pb2+, K+, Fe2+, Li+ and Hg2+ ions. Receptor 1 can be used for semi-quantitative recognition of Cu2+ ions at ppm level. The fluorescence microscopy experiments showed that the receptor is efficient for detection of Fe3+ in vitro, developing a good image of the biological organelles.

Ratiometric fluorescent probe for biothiol in aqueous medium with fluorescent organic nanoparticles

A dipodal rhodamine-based mercury complex have been designed and synthesized, for the selective detection of 3-mercaptopropionic acid (MPA). To avoid the poor solubility of rhodamine-based ligand in pure water, the Hg(2+) complex of fluorescent organic nanoparticles (FONs) of ligand have been developed using reprecipitation method and the formation of 1:1 complex has been confirmed with various spectroscopic techniques. The resultant chemosensor can detect MPA in a concentration range of 60 nM-1 μM (in buffered aqueous medium) with detection limit of 60 nM.

Dual colorimetric sensing of mercury and iodide ions by steroidal 1,2,3-triazole-stabilized silver nanoparticles

Bile acid-based 1,2,3-triazole ligands have been synthesized, which show excellent ability to stabilize silver nanoparticles. These AgNPs have been found to exhibit highly selective dual colorimetric sensing of Hg²⁺ and I⁻ ions.

Silica cross-linked nanoparticles encapsulating a phenothiazine-derived Schiff base for selective detection of Fe(iii) in aqueous media

This work demonstrates the design and synthesis of an ET-based fluorescence quenching chemosensor using silica cross-linked micellar nanoparticles as scaffolds to encapsulate EDDP for highly selective determination of Fe³⁺ in aqueous media.

2-(Adamantan-1-yl)-N-(6-meth-oxy-1,3-benzo-thia-zol-2-yl)acetamide

The asymmetric unit of the title compound, C20H24N2O2S, contains two independent mol-ecules having very similar geometries. The main N-(6-meth-oxy-1,3-benzo-thia-zol-2-yl)acetamide moiety adopts an almost planar structure (r.m.s. deviations of 0.091 and 0.051 Å for the two independent molecules). The adamantyl substituent occupies the gauche position relative to the C-N bond of the acetamide moiety [the corresponding N-C-C-C dihedral angles are -100.3 (3) and -96.5 (3)° for the two independent mol-ecules]. In the crystal, the two independent mol-ecules form a dimer via a pair of N-H⋯N hydrogen bonds. The dimers are further linked by C-H⋯O hydrogen bonds and attractive S⋯S [3.622 (2) Å] inter-actions into ribbons along [100].

Novel cycloalkylthiophene-imine derivatives bearing benzothiazole scaffold: synthesis, characterization and antiviral activity evaluation

A series of novel cycloalkylthiophene-imine derivatives containing benzothiazole unit were designed, synthesized and evaluated for their anti-viral activities. The bio-evaluation results indicated that some of the target compounds (such as 5g, 5i, 5u) exhibited good to moderate antiviral effect on CVB5, ADV7 and EV71 viruses, however, these compounds did not have inhibition activity against H1N1 virus. Especially, the compounds 4c and 4d also exhibited high antiviral activities, which provide a new and efficient approach to evolve novel multi-functional antiviral agents by rational integration of active pharmacophores.
