Pentafluorophenyl Copper-Biarylsulfoxide Complexes: Synthesis and Photoreactivity

Pentafluorophenyl copper(I)-biarylsulfoxide complexes, existing as [Cu(C6F5)]4L2, both in solution and in the solid state, were prepared and thoroughly characterized. Subsequently, the photochemistry of the complexes was explored, showing inherent photoreactivity of the biarylsulfoxide moiety within the coordination sphere of the copper. Photoinduced cross-coupling reactions between the anthryl moiety of bis-anthracenylsulfoxide and pentafluorobenzene, and synthesis of Cu2O (cuprite), were demonstrated.

Half-substituted fluorocycloparaphenylenes with high symmetry: synthesis, properties and derivatization to densely substituted carbon nanorings

Fluorinated cycloparaphenylenes (FCPPs) have attracted attention as electron-accepting CPPs as well as strained fluoroarenes. Herein, we report the synthesis and properties of novel FCPPs; F16[8]CPP and F12[6]CPP. Furthermore, the derivatization of F16[8]CPP afforded a new carbon nanoring where sixteen pyrrole rings are densely substituted on the CPP framework.

Steric and Electronic Effects in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(III) Complexes: An Experimental and Computational Study

A series of neutral acridine-based gold(III)-NHC complexes containing the pentafluorophenyl (-C₆F₅) group were synthesized. All of the complexes were fully characterized by analytical techniques. The square planar geometry around the gold center was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis for complexes 1 (Trichloro [1-methyl-3-(9-acridine)imidazol-2-ylidene]gold(III)) and 2 (Chloro-bis(pentafluorophenyl)[1-methyl-3-(9-acridine)imidazol-2-ylidene]gold(III)). In both cases, the acridine rings play a key role in the crystal packing of the solid structures by mean of π-π stacking interactions, with centroid-centroid and interplanar distances being similar to those found in other previously reported acridine-based Au(I)-NHC complexes. A different reactivity when using a bulkier N-heterocyclic carbene ligand such as 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-imidazolidinylidene (SIPr) was observed. While the use of the acridine-based NHC ligand led to the expected organometallic gold(III) species, the steric hindrance of the bulky SIPr ligand led to the formation of the corresponding imidazolinium cation stabilized by the tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)aurate(III) [Au(C₆F₅)₄]^- anion. Computational experiments were carried out in order to figure out the ground state electronic structure and the binding formation energy of the complexes and, therefore, to explain the observed reactivity.

Non-Palladium-Catalyzed Oxidative Coupling Reactions Using Hypervalent Iodine Reagents

Transition metal-catalyzed direct oxidative coupling reactions via C–H bond activation have emerged as a straightforward strategy for the construction of complex molecules in organic synthesis. The direct transformation of C–H bonds into carbon–carbon and carbon–heteroatom bonds renders the requirement of prefunctionalization of starting materials and, therefore, represents a more efficient alternative to the traditional cross-coupling reactions. The key to the unprecedented progress made in this area has been the identification of an appropriate oxidant that facilitates oxidation and provides heteroatom ligands at the metal center. In this context, hypervalent iodine compounds have evolved as mainstream reagents particularly because of their excellent oxidizing nature, high electrophilicity, and versatile reactivity. They are environmentally benign reagents, stable, non-toxic, and relatively cheaper than inorganic oxidants. For many years, palladium catalysis has dominated these oxidative coupling reactions, but eventually, other transition metal catalysts such as gold, copper, platinum, iron, etc. were found to be promising alternate catalysts for facilitating such reactions. This review article critically summarizes the recent developments in non-palladium-catalyzed oxidative coupling reactions mediated by hypervalent iodine (III) reagents with significant emphasis on understanding the mechanistic aspects in detail.

C-C Cross-Couplings from a Cyclometalated Au(III) C ∧ N Complex: Mechanistic Insights and Synthetic Developments

In recent years, the reactivity of gold complexes was shown to extend well beyond π-activation and to hold promises to achieve selective cross-couplings in several C-C and C-E (E=heteroatom) bond forming reactions. Here, with the aim of exploiting new organometallic species for cross-coupling reactions, we report on the Au(III)-mediated C(sp2 )-C(sp) occurring upon reaction of the cyclometalated complex [Au(CCH2 N)Cl2 ] (1, CCH2 N=2-benzylpyridine) with AgPhCC. The reaction progress has been monitored by NMR spectroscopy, demonstrating the involvement of a number of key intermediates, whose structures have been unambiguously ascertained through 1D and 2D NMR analyses (1 H, 13 C, 1 H-1 H COSY, 1 H-13 C HSQC and 1 H-13 C HMBC) as well as by HR-ESI-MS and X-ray diffraction studies. Furthermore, crystallographic studies have serendipitously resulted in the authentication of zwitterionic Au(I) complexes as side-products arising from cyclization of the coupling product in the coordination sphere of gold. The experimental work has been paralleled and complemented by DFT calculations of the reaction profiles, providing valuable insight into the structure and energetics of the key intermediates and transition states, as well as on the coordination sphere of gold along the whole process. Of note, the broader scope of the cross-coupling at the Au(III) CCH2 N centre has also been demonstrated studying the reaction of 1 with C(sp2 )-based nucleophiles, namely vinyl and heteroaryl tin and zinc reagents. These reactions stand as rare examples of C(sp2 )-C(sp2 ) cross-couplings at Au(III).

Recent advances in the functionalization of polyfluoro(aza)aromatics via C-C coupling strategies

Polyfluoro(aza)aromatic compounds are of interest in various fields of practical applications, such as medicinal and agrochemistry, materials science and advanced technologies. The C-C coupling reactions are known to be a promising synthetic tool to create challenging fluorinated molecules of diverse architectures. In this review, we have summarized the recent advances in the functionalization of polyfluoro(aza)aromatics via both transition metal-catalyzed and metal-free C-C coupling reactions for the period from 2006 to the beginning of 2021. Also, mechanistic features for chemical transformations of fluoroarene scaffolds and new opportunities for practical applications of the designed fluorinated molecules have been highlighted.

Carbon-Phosphorus Coupling from C^N Cyclometalated AuIII Complexes

With the aim of exploiting new organometallic species for cross-coupling reactions, we report here on the AuIII -mediated Caryl -P bond formation occurring upon reaction of C^N cyclometalated AuIII complexes with phosphines. The [Au(C^N)Cl2 ] complex 1 featuring the bidentate 2-benzoylpyridine (CCO N) scaffold was found to react with PTA (1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane) under mild conditions, including in water, to afford the corresponding phosphonium 5 through C-P reductive elimination. A mechanism is proposed for the title reaction based on in situ 31 P{1 H} NMR and HR-ESI-MS analyses combined with DFT calculations. The C-P coupling has been generalized to other C^N cyclometalated AuIII complexes and other tertiary phosphines. Overall, this work provides new insights into the reactivity of cyclometalated AuIII compounds and establishes initial structure-activity relationships to develop AuIII -mediated C-P cross-coupling reactions.

Ascorbic Acid as an Aryl Radical Inducer in the Gold-Mediated Arylation of Indoles with Aryldiazonium Chlorides

In recent years interest in the development of protocols that facilitate the oxidative addition of gold to access mild cross-coupling processes mediated by this metal has increased. In this context, we report herein that ascorbic acid, a natural and readily accessible antioxidant, can be used to accelerate the oxidative addition of aryldiazonium chlorides onto Au^I . The aryl-Au^III species generated in this way, has been used to prepare 3-arylindoles in a one-pot protocol starting from anilines and para-, meta-, and ortho- substituted aryldiazonium chlorides. The mechanism underlying the oxidative addition has been examined in detail based on EPR analyses, cyclic voltammetry, and DFT calculations. Interestingly, we have found that in this protocol, the chloride atom induces the Au^II /Au^III oxidation step.

Discovery and mechanistic investigation of Pt-catalyzed oxidative homocoupling of benzene with PhI(OAc)2

Pt-catalyzed direct coupling of benzene to biphenyl using PhI(OAc)₂ as an oxidant in the absence of any acid as a co-solvent or co-catalyst was mechanistically investigated.

Oxidant speciation and anionic ligand effects in the gold-catalyzed oxidative coupling of arenes and alkynes

The mechanism of the gold-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling of arenes and alkynes has been studied in detail combining stoichiometric experiments with putative reaction intermediates and DFT calculations. Our data suggest that ligand exchange between the alkyne, the Au(i)-catalyst and the hypervalent iodine reagent is responsible for the formation of both an Au(i)-acetylide complex and a more reactive "non-symmetric" I(iii) oxidant responsible for the crucial Au(i)/Au(iii) turnover. Further, the reactivity of the in situ generated Au(iii)-acetylide complex is governed by the nature of the anionic ligands transferred by the I(iii) oxidant: while halogen ligands remain unreactive, acetato ligands are efficiently displaced by the arene to yield the observed Csp2-Csp cross-coupling products through an irreversible reductive elimination step. Finally, the nature of competitive processes and catalyst deactivation pathways has also been unraveled. This detailed investigation provides insights not only on the specific features of the species involved in oxidative gold-catalyzed cross couplings but also highlights the importance of both ancillary and anionic ligands in the reactivity of the key Au(iii) intermediates.

Oxidant-free oxidative gold catalysis: the new paradigm in cross-coupling reactions

The construction of C–C and C–X (X = hetero atom) bonds is the core aspect for the assembly of molecules. This feature article critically presents an overview of all the redox neutral cross-coupling reactions enabled by gold catalysis, which we believe would stimulate further research activities in this promising area.

Gold(iii)-arene complexes by insertion of olefins into gold-aryl bonds

The synthesis and characterization of the first gold(iii)-arene complexes are described. Well-defined (P,C)-cyclometalated gold(iii)-aryl complexes were prepared and characterized by NMR spectroscopy. These complexes swiftly and cleanly reacted with norbornene and ethylene to provide cationic gold(iii)-alkyl complexes, in which the remote phenyl ring was η2-coordinated to gold. The interaction between the aromatic ring and the gold(iii) center was thoroughly analyzed by NMR spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and DFT calculations. The π-arene coordination was found to significantly influence the stability and reactivity of low coordinated gold(iii) alkyl species.

Hypervalent Iodine Reagents in High Valent Transition Metal Chemistry

Over the last 20 years, high valent metal complexes have evolved from mere curiosities to being at the forefront of modern catalytic method development. This approach has enabled transformations complimentary to those possible via traditional manifolds, most prominently carbon-heteroatom bond formation. Key to the advancement of this chemistry has been the identification of oxidants that are capable of accessing these high oxidation state complexes. The oxidant has to be both powerful enough to achieve the desired oxidation as well as provide heteroatom ligands for transfer to the metal center; these heteroatoms are often subsequently transferred to the substrate via reductive elimination. Herein we will review the central role that hypervalent iodine reagents have played in this aspect, providing an ideal balance of versatile reactivity, heteroatom ligands, and mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, these reagents are environmentally benign, non-toxic, and relatively inexpensive compared to other inorganic oxidants. We will cover advancements in both catalysis and high valent complex isolation with a key focus on the subtle effects that oxidant choice can have on reaction outcome, as well as limitations of current reagents.

Reactions of Trivalent Iodine Reagents with Classic Iridium and Rhodium Complexes

In this work, the reactions of iodine(iii) reagents (PhI(L)2: L = pyridine, acetate (OAc−), triflate (OTf−)) with iridium(i) and rhodium(i) complexes (Vaskas’s compound, Wilkinson’s catalyst, and bis[bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]rhodium(i) triflate) are reported. In all cases, the reactions resulted in two-electron oxidation of the metal complexes. Mixtures of products were observed in the reactions of Iiii reagents with Vaska’s compound and Wilkinson’s catalyst via ligand exchange and anion scrambling. In the case of reacting Iiii reagents with chelating ligand-containing bis[bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane]rhodium(i) triflate, no scrambling was observed.

Au(iii)-aryl intermediates in oxidant-free C-N and C-O cross-coupling catalysis

Au(iii)-aryl species have been crystallographically isolated as reactive intermediates in oxidant-free C–O and C–N cross coupling processes, using aromatic and aliphatic alcohols and amines, as well as water and amides, as nucleophiles.

Au(iii)-aryl species have been unequivocally identified as reactive intermediates in oxidant-free C–O and C–N cross coupling catalysis. The crystal structures of cyclometalated neutral and cationic Au(iii) species are described and their key role in 2 electron-redox Au(i)/Au(iii) catalysis in C–O and C–N cross couplings is shown. Nucleophiles compatible with Au-catalyzed cross couplings include aromatic and aliphatic alcohols and amines, as well as water and amides.

Access to the Parent Tetrakis(pyridine)gold(III) Trication, Facile Formation of Rare Au(III) Terminal Hydroxides, and Preliminary Studies of Biological Properties

In this paper we report on the use of [NO][BF4] to access tricationic tetrakis(pyridine)gold(III) from Au powder, a species inaccessible using the more traditional (tetrahydrothiophene)AuCl route. It is then demonstrated that this family of compounds can be used to access new terminal Au(III) hydroxides, a challenging class of compounds, and the first crystallographically characterized examples employing bidentate ligands. Finally, preliminary biological studies indicate good activity for derivatives featuring polydentate ligands against the HeLa and PC3 cell lines but also strong inhibition of primary HUVEC cells.

Pyridylidene ligand facilitates gold-catalyzed oxidative C-H arylation of heterocycles

Triaryl-2-pyridylidene effectively facilitates the gold-catalyzed oxidative C-H arylation of heteroarenes with arylsilanes as a unique electron-donating ligand on gold. The employment of the 2-pyridylidene ligand, which is one of the strongest electron-donating N-heterocyclic carbenes, resulted in the rate acceleration of the C-H arylation reaction of heterocycles over conventional ligands such as triphenylphosphine and a classical N-heterocyclic carbene. In situ observation and isolation of the 2-pyridylidene-gold(III) species, as well as a DFT study, indicated unusual stability of gold(III) species stabilized by strong electron donation from the 2-pyridylidene ligand. Thus, the gold(I)-to-gold(III) oxidation process is thought to be facilitated by the highly electron-donating 2-pyridylidene ligand.

A 2,2′-bipyridine coordination complex of [ICl2]+

Stoichiometric to catalytic reactivity of the aryl cycloaurated species with arylboronic acids: insight into the mechanism of gold-catalyzed oxidative C(sp2)-H arylation

Based on the well-defined five-membered aryl gold(iii) complexes, [Au(tpy)X2] (3a and 3b) and [AuBr(Ph)(tpy)] (7), as well as the aryl gold(iii) complex [AuCl2(Ph)(tpy)] (8) (tpy = 2-(o-tolyl)pyridine) as reliable models, we present a detailed study of the mechanism for gold(iii)-catalyzed oxidative cross-coupling reactions between cycloaurable arenes and arylboronic acids. Here we report the direct evidence for a mechanistic proposal including arene C-H activation, transmetallation and biaryl reductive elimination. The chelation-assisted C-H activation strategy has been used for the development of the gold(iii)-catalyzed C-H bond arylation of arenes with aryl reagents to forge extended π-conjugated systems.

Photoinitiated oxidative addition of CF3I to gold(I) and facile aryl-CF3 reductive elimination

Herein we report the mechanism of oxidative addition of CF₃I to Au(I), and remarkably fast C_aryl–CF₃ bond reductive elimination from Au(III) cations. CF₃I undergoes a fast, formal oxidative addition to R₃PAuR′ (R = Cy, R′ = 3,5-F₂-C₆H₄, 4-F-C₆H₄, C₆H₅, 4-Me-C₆H₄, 4-MeO-C₆H₄, Me; R = Ph, R′ = 4-F-C₆H₄, 4-Me-C₆H₄). When R′ = aryl, complexes of the type R₃PAu(aryl)(CF₃)I can be isolated and characterized. Mechanistic studies suggest that near-ultraviolet light (λ_max = 313 nm) photoinitiates a radical chain reaction by exciting CF₃I. Complexes supported by PPh₃ undergo reversible phosphine dissociation at 110 °C to generate a three-coordinate intermediate that undergoes slow reductive elimination. These processes are quantitative and heavily favor C_aryl–I reductive elimination over C_aryl–CF₃ reductive elimination. Silver-mediated halide abstraction from all complexes of the type R₃PAu(aryl)(CF₃)I results in quantitative formation of Ar–CF₃ in less than 1 min at temperatures as low as −10 °C.

Gold-catalyzed oxidative coupling of arylsilanes and arenes: origin of selectivity and improved precatalyst

The mechanism of gold-catalyzed coupling of arenes with aryltrimethylsilanes has been investigated, employing an improved precatalyst (thtAuBr3) to facilitate kinetic analysis. In combination with linear free-energy relationships, kinetic isotope effects, and stoichiometric experiments, the data support a mechanism involving an Au(I)/Au(III) redox cycle in which sequential electrophilic aromatic substitution of the arylsilane and the arene by Au(III) precedes product-forming reductive elimination and subsequent cycle-closing reoxidation of the metal. Despite the fundamental mechanistic similarities between the two auration events, high selectivity is observed for heterocoupling (C-Si then C-H auration) over homocoupling of either the arylsilane or the arene (C-Si then C-Si, or C-H then C-H auration); this chemoselectivity originates from differences in the product-determining elementary steps of each electrophilic substitution. The turnover-limiting step of the reaction involves associative substitution en route to an arene π-complex. The ramifications of this insight for implementation of the methodology are discussed.
