Efficient and selective capture of Au(III) from PCBs by pentaethylenehexamine-modified chloromethylated polystyrene beads

Recycling of gold promotes solving the problems of resource waste and environmental pollution. In this work, pentaethylenehexamine (PEHA)-modified chloromethylated polystyrene beads (PEHA-CMPS) was synthesized for the recovery of Au(III) from actual printed circuits boards (PCBs) leaching solution. PEHA-CMPS exhibited excellent adsorption efficiency at a wide pH range. It was discovered that the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir model provided a superior match for the Au(III) adsorption process. The maximum adsorption capacity for Au(III) was 1186 mg/g. Furthermore, PEHA-CMPS was able to selectively capture trace Au(III) with recovery efficiencies of above 80% from the actual PCBs leaching solution. In addition, the column separation approach was utilized to better assess the practical applications for PEHA-CMPS, proving that the prepared adsorbent exhibited great prospects in industrial applications. The adsorption efficiency still maintained 95% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. The FTIR, XRD, and XPS analyses demonstrated that Au(III) uptake on PEHA-CMPS was a collaborative process involving electrostatic interaction, chelation, and oxidation-reduction. The PEHA-CMPS provided a promising strategy in Au(III) recovery and environmental remediation.

Steric and Electronic Effects in N-Heterocyclic Carbene Gold(III) Complexes: An Experimental and Computational Study

A series of neutral acridine-based gold(III)-NHC complexes containing the pentafluorophenyl (-C₆F₅) group were synthesized. All of the complexes were fully characterized by analytical techniques. The square planar geometry around the gold center was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis for complexes 1 (Trichloro [1-methyl-3-(9-acridine)imidazol-2-ylidene]gold(III)) and 2 (Chloro-bis(pentafluorophenyl)[1-methyl-3-(9-acridine)imidazol-2-ylidene]gold(III)). In both cases, the acridine rings play a key role in the crystal packing of the solid structures by mean of π-π stacking interactions, with centroid-centroid and interplanar distances being similar to those found in other previously reported acridine-based Au(I)-NHC complexes. A different reactivity when using a bulkier N-heterocyclic carbene ligand such as 1,3-bis-(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-2-imidazolidinylidene (SIPr) was observed. While the use of the acridine-based NHC ligand led to the expected organometallic gold(III) species, the steric hindrance of the bulky SIPr ligand led to the formation of the corresponding imidazolinium cation stabilized by the tetrakis(pentafluorophenyl)aurate(III) [Au(C₆F₅)₄]^- anion. Computational experiments were carried out in order to figure out the ground state electronic structure and the binding formation energy of the complexes and, therefore, to explain the observed reactivity.

Highly efficient metal-organic frameworks adsorbent for Pd(II) and Au(III) recovery from solutions: Experiment and mechanism

With the boom of modern industry, the demand for precious metals palladium (Pd) and gold (Au) is increasing. However, the discharge of Pd(II) and Au(III) wastewater has caused environmental pollution and shortage of resources. Here, a new metal-organic frameworks adsorbent (MOF-AFH) was synthesized to efficiently separate Pd(II) and Au(III) from the water. The adsorption behavior of Pd(II) and Au(III) was explored at the same time. When gold and palladium are adsorbed separately, the adsorption capacity of gold and palladium is 389.02 mg/g and 191.27 mg/g, respectively. The equilibration time is 3 h. When gold and palladium coexist, the adsorption capacities of Au(III) and Pd(II) are 238.71 and 115.02 mg/g, respectively. The experimental results show that the adsorption of Pd(II) and Au(III) on MOF-AFH is a single-layer chemical adsorption, which is an endothermic process. MOF-AFH has excellent selectivity and after MOF-AFH is repeatedly used 4 times, the removal effect can still reach more than 90%. The adsorption mechanisms include reduction reaction and chelation with N and O-containing functional groups on the adsorbent. There is also electrostatic interaction for Au(III) adsorption. The adsorbent can be used to efficiently recover gold and palladium from wastewater.

A novel benzothiazole modified chitosan with excellent adsorption capacity for Au(III) in aqueous solutions

A novel benzothiazole modified chitosan (BCS) with excellent Au(III) adsorption performance and selectivity was prepared as adsorbents. The structure and morphology of the adsorbents were characterized by FTIR, SEM, XRD and XPS. The adsorption property of the adsorbents for Au(III) were investigated under different reaction time, initial concentration of Au(III), temperature, pH and coexisting ions. The maximum adsorption capacity of BCS for Au(III) was 1072.22 mg/g at 298 K and optimal pH = 4, which was better than that of other adsorbents reported in literature. The adsorption kinetics and isotherm models fit the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir equations. This shows that the adsorption process of Au(III) is a monolayer chemical adsorption. The adsorption process can proceed spontaneously and belong to the endothermic reaction according to the thermodynamic results. The excellent adsorption performance is mainly attributed to the ion exchange and chelation of the nitrogen, sulfur and oxygen groups on the adsorbent with gold ions. Significantly, BCS has excellent selectivity toward Au(III) and remarkable recycle performance. With the high adsorption capacity, excellent selectivity and outstanding reusability, the BCS adsorbent could be a promising candidate to adsorb Au(III) from wastewater.

Mechanism of selective gold adsorption on ion-imprinted chitosan resin modified by thiourea

Thiourea-modified chitosan-imprinted resin (IM-TUCS) and a corresponding nonimprinted resin (NIM-TUCS) were synthesized and characterized using adsorption experiments. The adsorption results showed that adsorption reached equilibrium within 4 h. The adsorption data were better fitted using the Langmuir model (R²>0.99), and the gold adsorption capacities of IM-TUCS and NIM-TUCS were 933.2 and 373.7 mg·g^-1, respectively. The IM-TUCS adsorbent was more suitable for gold than other coexisting anions and cations. The possible mechanism underlying Au(Ⅲ) adsorption on IM-TUCS was further investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-ray diffraction analyses. The protonation of the amino group on the resin under low pH conditions promoted Au(Ⅲ) adsorption; O, N and S in the C‒OH, C˭S and C-NH₂ groups contained in the IM-TUCS coordinated with Au(III) ions. The cross-linking of the imprinted resin provided holes that could hold Au(III), thus the imprinted resin supported more Au(III). The adsorption capacity of the IM-TUCS for Au(III) was significantly higher than that of the NIM-TUCS, which is attributed to the cross-linking of the imprinted resin. Moreover, the IM-TUCS showed specific recognition capabilities for Au(III). After elution with the eluent, IM-TUCS was reused for four cycles with a gold recovery rate of approximately 93%, revealing its high potential economic value.

Au(III) complexes with tetradentate-cyclam-based ligands

Chiral cyclam (1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclotetradecane) derivatives were synthesized stepwise from chiral mono-Boc-1,2-diamines and (dialkyl)malonyl dichloride via open diamide-bis(N-Boc-amino) intermediates (65-91%). Deprotection and ring closure with a second malonyl unit afforded the cyclam tetraamide precursors (80-95%). The new protocol allowed the preparation of the target cyclam derivatives (53-59%) by a final optimized hydride reduction. Both the open tetraamine intermediates and the cyclam derivatives successfully coordinated with AuCl₃ to give moderate to excellent yields (50-96%) of the corresponding novel tetra-coordinated N,N,N,N-Au(III) complexes with alternating five- and six-membered chelate rings. The testing of the catalytic ability of the cyclam-based N,N,N,N-Au(III) complexes demonstrated high catalytic activity of some complexes in selected test reactions (full conversion in 1-24 h, 62-97% product yields).

Persimmon tannin functionalized polyacrylonitrile fiber for highly efficient and selective recovery of Au(III) from aqueous solution

An efficient fibrous adsorbent (PANF-TETA-PT) was prepared via grafting triethylenetetramine (TETA) on polyacrylonitrile fiber (PANF), followed by persimmon tannin (PT) immobilizing. Detailed characterization certified that plenty amounts of amino and phenolic hydroxyl groups existed on the surface of PANF-TETA-PT, which would provide excellent active sites for Au(III) adsorption. The batch characteristic results found that the adsorption equilibrium data could be fitted well with Langmuir equation, while the obtained kinetic data were consistent with the Pseudo-second-order equation. The maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of PANF-TETA-PT towards Au(III) (801.2 mg/g) was apparently superior than that of the reported adsorbents, and the competitive adsorption showed that PANF-TETA-PT had a good preference to adsorption Au(III) in spite of some coexisting pollutants. The characterization analysis of Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray diffractometer spectrum (XRD) revealed that the electrostatic attraction and chelation dominated the uptake of Au(III) on PANF-TETA-PT, in which a part of loaded Au(III) was reduced to Au particles with the help of reductive functional groups. Thus, this adsorbent could be as a promising candidate to separation and preconcentration of Au(III) from wastewater.

Development and characterization of chitosan functionalized dialdehyde viscose fiber for adsorption of Au(III) and Pd(II)

A highly efficient fiber-based adsorbent (DAVFs-CS) was developed via decoration of chitosan (CS) on the dialdehyde viscose fibers (DAVFs) substrate, and employed to selective separation of precious metals from simulated contaminated water. The surface functionalization of the solid material was probed using the Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technique. The batch characteristic results showed that the maximum uptake capacities of DAVFs-CS were higher up to 322 mg/g and 207 mg/g for Au(III) and Pd(II) at optimal pH 2.0 and 3.0, which exhibited competitiveness with the majority of the reported adsorbents. Meanwhile, the adsorption data were in accordance with Langmuir and PSO equations, which indicated that the monolayer chemisorption dominated the adsorption process. The competitive adsorption study showed that the removal efficiency of Au(III) was not susceptible to the co-existing impurities. Adsorption mechanism study revealed that the negative Au(III) or Pd(II) species were firstly adsorbed on DAVFs-CS via the protonated amino groups, subsequently the partially reduction of them to zero-valent gold and palladium with the help of reductive functional groups. Thus, DAVFs-CS could be as a promising adsorbent to recovery of precious metals owning to its unique adsorption mechanism and excellent adsorption performance.

Mechanism for sonochemical reduction of Au(III) in aqueous butanol solution under Ar based on the analysis of gaseous and water-soluble products

When an aqueous Au(III) solution containing 1-butanol was sonicated under Ar, Au(III) was reduced to Au(0) to form Au particles. This is because various reducing species are formed during sonication, but the reactivity of these species has not yet been evaluated in detail. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the effects of Au(III) on the rates of the formation of gaseous and water-soluble compounds (CH₄, C₂H₆, C₂H₄, C₂H₂, CO, CO₂, H₂, H₂O₂, and aldehydes), and the rate of Au(III) reduction as a function of 1-butanol concentration. The following facts were recognized: 1) for Au(III) reduction, the contribution of the radicals formed by the pyrolysis of 1-butanol was higher than that of the secondary radicals formed by the abstraction reactions of 1-butanol with ·OH, 2) ·CH₃ and CO acted as reductants, 3) the contribution of ·H to Au(III) reduction was small in the presence of 1-butanol, 4) aldehydes and H₂ did not act as reductants, and 5) the types of species that reduced Au(III) changed with 1-butanol concentration.

Adsorption behavior and mechanism of Au(III) on caffeic acid functionalized viscose staple fibers

A novel fibrous adsorbent (DAVSF-CA) was synthesized via grafting caffeic acid (CA) onto dialdehyde viscose staple fiber (DAVSF), and used to selectively adsorb Au(III) from simulated wastewater. Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-ray Photoelectron (XPS) and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectra confirmed that caffeic acid was successfully grafted on DAVSF through condensation reaction. Adsorption experiments revealed that the adsorption of Au(III) on DAVSF-CA was extremely dependent on pH values and temperatures, and the maximum adsorption capacity of 3.71 mmol/g for Au(III) was obtained at pH 3.0 and 333 K according to the Langmuir fitting. High temperature was favorable for Au(III) adsorption because the adsorption of Au(III) on the DAVSF-CA was endothermic. The competitive adsorption demonstrated that DAVSF-CA had a good preference to Au(III) adsorption in the presence of some coexisting pollutants. The adsorption isotherm data of Au(III) were well-described by the Langmuir model, while the kinetic data were fitted well by the Pseudo-second-order equation. The major reaction involving the reduction of Au(III) to Au(0) was identified by XPS and XRD analysis. Namely, Au(III) was first captured on protonated functional groups via electrostatic adsorption, and then reduced to its elemental form and formed the nano-particles on the adsorbent surfaces.

Selective Adsorption, Reduction, and Separation of Au(III) from Aqueous Solution with Amine-Type Non-Woven Fabric Adsorbents

Herein, adsorption, separation, and reduction of Au(III) from its aqueous solution were studied with different amine-type, non-woven fabric (NF) adsorbents fabricated with radiation-induced graft polymerization. The adsorbents exhibited different adsorption capacities of Au(III) over a concentration range of hydrochloric acid (HCl) from 5 mM to 5 M, and the diethylamine (DEA)-type adsorbent performed best under all test conditions. The DEA-type adsorbent was inert toward other metal ions, including Cu(II), Pb(II), Ni(II), Zn(II) and Li(I), within the fixed concentration range of HCl. Flow-through adsorption tests indicated DEA-type adsorbent exhibited a rapid recovery and high adsorption capacity of 3.23 mmol/g. Meanwhile, DEA-type adsorbent also exhibited high selectivity and rapid extraction for Au(III) from its mixed solution with Pt(IV) and Pd(II). After adsorption, the reduction of Au(III) was confirmed by XRD spectra, TEM, and digital micrograph images. The results indicated that nano-sized Au particles were mainly concentrated on the adsorbent in 5 mM HCl solution. In 1 M HCl solution, not only nano-sized Au particles were found, but also micro-size Au plates precipitation occurred. This study provides a novel material for selective and efficient gold uptake from aqueous solution.

Fabrication of Triethylenetetramine Terminal Hyperbranched Dendrimer-Like Polymer Modified Silica Gel and Its Prominent Recovery Toward Au (III)

To further increase the quantity and density of functional groups on adsorbent, terminal triethylenetetramine hyperbranched dendrimer-like polymer modified silica-gel (SG-TETA and SG-TETA2) was synthesized. The hyperbranched dendrimer-like polymer was successfully introduced onto silica gel and new cavities were formed, which was demonstrated by FTIR, SEM, and BET. The highest adsorption capacities of SG-TETA and SG-TETA2 obtained from Langmuir model toward Au(III) were 2.11, and 2.27 mmol g⁻¹, respectively, indicating that SG-TETA2 possessing more functional groups had a better adsorption ability. Moreover, the adsorbents combined with Au(III) ion through chelation and electrostatic attraction mechanism, after which reduction reactions for Au(III) ion loaded on adsorbents proceeded. SG-TETA2 had better adsorption selectivity than SG-TETA in removing Au(III) in Au-existed ion solution systems. SG-TETA2 had higher overall adsorption capacities compared to silica-gel-based hyperbranched polymers functionalized by diethylenetriamine. Therefore, the effective recovery makes SG-TETA2 a practical adsorbent in removing Au(III) ion from e-wastes and industrial effluents with much prospect.

Biosynthesis of Pd and Au as nanoparticles by a marine bacterium Bacillus sp. GP and their enhanced catalytic performance using metal oxides for 4-nitrophenol reduction

Recovery of noble metals using marine bacteria is becoming an attractive research area because the marine microbes can better adapt to unfavorable environment than terrestrial microorganisms. In this study, we first reported that a marine Bacillus sp. GP was capable of producing Pd and Au NPs in the presence of sodium lactate. Ultraviolet visible spectrometer (UV-vis), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were employed to explain the process and mechanism of Pd(II)/Au(III) reduction through GP. Additionally, we also found that bio-Pd/Au NPs could be used as catalysts in chemical reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). Moreover, the catalytic activity of bio-Pd NPs could be enhanced by Fe₃O₄, Al₂O₃ and SiO₂, which is beneficial for practical application. The k₁ (k₂) values of Fe₃O₄, Al₂O₃ and SiO₂ supplemental systems were approximately 1.28-1.69 (1.15-1.69), 1.42-1.75 (1.53-1.91) and 1.07-1.73 (1.14-1.49) fold, respectively, compared to that of control systems.

Carbon dot cluster as an efficient "off-on" fluorescent probe to detect Au(III) and glutathione

In this paper, we reported for the first time that Au(III) decorated carbon dot cluster (Au(III)/CDC) was synthesized to detect glutathione through fluorescence "off-on" approach. The "off" process was realized by the introduction of Au(III) on luminescent carbon dots (CDs), which formed the complex of Au(III)/CDC and quenched the fluorescence of CDs efficiently. This "off" process was used to detect Au(III) with the selectivity among 21 metal ions and the limitation was 0.48 μM (S/N=3). Au(III) could be removed from the complex by biothiol in the solution, which restored the fluorescence of CDC to achieve the "on" process. This process was selective for biothiols (especially for glutathione) among saccharides, dopamine and amino acids and the limit of detection was 2.02 μM (S/N=3). Due to the dependence of the fluorescence restoration on the concentration of glutathione, Au(III)/CDC was applied as the fluorescence sensor for detection of glutathione in the solution and cellular cytosol. By referring to the fluorescence change in the solution, the intracellular glutathione with/without oxygen stress was evaluated. As compared with the commercial assay, our Au(III)/CDC based assay was simple, facile and low cost, which would be useful to measure intracellular glutathione at different cellular states.

Investigation of the pharmacological profiles of dinuclear metal complexes as novel, potent and selective cytotoxic agents against ras-transformed cells

Around the world scientists try to design successful cures against still incurable diseases, especially cancers. New targets for prevention and new agents for therapy need to be identified. We synthesized novel metal complexes [Au(L1)(L2)Pt]Cl2 and [Ru(L1)2(L2)Pt]Cl2 for determining their cytotoxic and apoptotic effects. The complexes are synthesized by using 1,8-diaminonaphthalene (L1), and bis-1,4-di[([1,10]phenanthroline-5-il)aminomethyl]cyclohexane (L2) as ligands. This is the first study to examine these metals and these molecules in cancer treatment. We elucidated the effects of test compounds with embryonic rat fibroblast-like cells (F2408) and H-ras oncogene activated embryonic rat fibroblast-like cancer cells (5RP7). Results showed that our complexes are more effective than cisplatin to kill ras-transformed cells. Although the [Au(L1)(L2)Pt]Cl2 compound showed a cytotoxic potency higher than [Ru(L1)2(L2)Pt]Cl2 against cancer cells, it proved to be almost five times less effective in decreasing cell viability over healthy cells. Au(III) compound selectively targets the cancer cells but not the healthy cells.

Grafting of a novel gold(III) complex on nanoporous MCM-41 and evaluation of its toxicity in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

The goal of this research was to investigate the potential of newly synthesized gold complex trichloro(2,4,6-trimethylpyridine)Au(III) as an anticancer agent. The gold(III) complex was synthesized and grafted on nanoporous silica, MCM-41, to produce AuCl(3)@PF-MCM- 41 (AuCl(3) grafted on pyridine-functionalized MCM-41). The toxicity of trichloro(2,4,6- trimethylpyridine)Au(III) and AuCl(3)@PF-MCM-41 in Saccharomyces cerevisiae (as a model system) was studied. The gold(III) complex showed a mid cytotoxic effect on yeast viability. Using the drug delivery system, nanoporous MCM-41, the gold(III) complex became a strong inhibitor for growth of yeast cells at a very low concentration. Furthermore, the animal tests revealed a high uptake of AuCl(3)@PF-MCM-41 in tumor cells. The stability of the compound was confirmed in human serum.
