X-type silyl ligands for transition-metal catalysis

Given the critical importance of novel ligand development for transition-metal (TM) catalysis, as well as the resurgence of the field of organosilicon chemistry and silyl ligands, to summarize the topic of X-type silyl ligands for TM catalysis is highly attractive and timely. This review particularly emphasizes the unique σ-donating characteristics and trans-effects of silyl ligands, highlighting their crucial roles in enhancing the reactivity and selectivity of various catalytic reactions, including small molecule activation, Kumada cross-coupling, hydrofunctionalization, C-H functionalization, and dehydrogenative Si-O coupling reactions. Additionally, future developments in this field are also provided, which would inspire new insights and applications in catalytic synthetic chemistry.

Synthesis, characterisation, and catalytic application of a soluble molecular carrier of sodium hydride activated by a substituted 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine

Recently main group compounds have stepped into the territory of precious transition metal compounds with respect to utility in the homogeneous catalysis of fundamentally important organic transformations. Inspired by the need to promote more sustainability in chemistry because of their greater abundance in nature, this change of direction is surprising since main group metals generally do not possess the same breadth of reactivity as precious transition metals. Here, we introduce the dihydropyridylsodium compound, Na-1,2-tBu-DH(DMAP), and its monomeric variant [Na-1,2-tBu-DH(DMAP)]·Me6TREN, and demonstrate their effectiveness in transfer hydrogenation catalysis of the representative alkene 1,1-diphenylethylene to the alkane 1,1-diphenylethane using 1,4-cyclohexadiene as hydrogen source [DMAP = 4-dimethylaminopyridine; Me6TREN = tris(N,N-dimethyl-2-aminoethyl)amine]. Sodium is appealing because of its high abundance in the earth's crust and oceans, but organosodium compounds have been rarely used in homogeneous catalysis. The success of the dihydropyridylsodium compounds can be attributed to their high solubility and reactivity in organic solvents.

Dipyrromethane-diphosphine: the effect of meso substituents on the formation of nickel complexes and on their performance in the transfer hydrogenation of ketones

Three dipyrromethane-diphosphine ligands containing phenyl (L1H2), ethyl (L2H2) and cyclohexyl (L3H2) groups at their meso positions and their nickel complexes were synthesized and structurally characterized. Treatment of Ph2C(C4H3N)2-1,9-(CH2PPh2)2 (L1H2) with [NiCl2(DME)] gave complex [NiCl2(κ2-P,P-L1H2)] 2a. Conversely, the analogous reactions of L2H2 and L3H2 with [NiCl2(DME)] showed a mixture of products containing both a pyrrolide nitrogen coordinated complex of type [Ni(κ4-P,N,N,P-L)] 3 without an exogenous base and a chelated complex of type 2a. In addition, all three ligands react with [NiCl2(DME)] in the presence of a strong base to give a complex of type 3. Furthermore, a novel binuclear Ni(0) complex bearing L1H2 was characterized by X-ray crystallography. Both complexes 2a and 3 (0.5 mol% of loading) catalyze the transfer hydrogenation of a series of aromatic and aliphatic ketones (20 substrates) to their corresponding secondary alcohols using iPrOH as a hydrogen source in the presence of KOH at 100 °C in 6 h. The kinetic trace of the catalytic reaction shows that the meso-phenyl substituted diphosphine coordinated nickel complexes perform better than the other two ligand coordinated nickel complexes.

Robust and efficient transfer hydrogenation of carbonyl compounds catalyzed by NN-Mn(I) complexes

A series of manganese(I) carbonyl complexes bearing structurally related NN- and NNN-chelating ligands have been synthesized and assessed as catalysts for transfer hydrogenation (TH). Notably, the NN-systems based on N-R functionalized 5,6,7,8-tetrahydroquinoline-8-amines, proved the most effective in the manganese-promoted conversion of acetophenone to 1-phenylethanol. In particular, the N-isopropyl derivative, Mn1, when conducted in combination with t-BuONa, was the standout performer mediating not only the reduction of acetophenone but also a range of carbonyl substrates including (hetero)aromatic-, aliphatic- and cycloalkyl-containing ketones and aldehydes with especially high values of TON (up to 17 200; TOF of 3550 h-1). These findings, obtained through a systematic variation of the N-R group of the NN ligand, are consistent with an outer-sphere mechanism for the hydrogen transfer. As a more general point, this Mn-based catalytic TH protocol offers an attractive and sustainable alternative for producing alcoholic products from carbonyl substrates.

Catalytic Reductive Amination of Aromatic Aldehydes on Co-Containing Composites

The performance of a series of cobalt-based composites in catalytic amination of aromatic aldehydes by amines in the presence of hydrogen as well as hydrogenation of quinoline was studied. The composites were prepared by pyrolysis of CoII acetate, organic precursor (imidazole, 1,10-phenantroline, 1,2-diaminobenzene or melamine) deposited on aerosil (SiO2). These composites contained nanoparticles of metallic Co together with N-doped carboneous particles. Quantitative yields of the target amine in a reaction of p-methoxybenzaldehyde with n-butylamine were obtained at p(H2) = 150 bar, T = 150 °C for all composites. It was found that amination of p-methoxybenzaldehyde with n-butylamine and benzylamine at p(H2) = 100 bar, T = 100 °C led to the formation of the corresponding amines with the yields of 72–96%. In the case of diisopropylamine, amination did not occur, and p-methoxybenzyl alcohol was the sole or the major reaction product. Reaction of p-chlorobenzaldehyde with n-butylamine on the Co-containing composites at p(H2) = 100 bar, T = 100 °C resulted in the formation of N-butyl-N-p-chlorobenzylamine in 60–89% yields. Among the considered materials, the composite prepared by decomposition of CoII complex with 1,2-diaminobenzene on aerosil showed the highest yields of the target products and the best selectivity in all studied reactions.

Methanol as a Potential Hydrogen Source for Reduction Reactions Enabled by a Commercial Pt/C Catalyst

Catalytic reduction reactions using methanol as a transfer hydrogenating agent is gaining significant attention because this simple alcohol is inexpensive and produced on a bulk scale. Herein, we report the catalytic utilization of methanol as a hydrogen source for the reduction of different functional organic compounds such as nitroarenes, olefins, and carbonyl compounds. The key to the success of this transformation is the use of a commercially available Pt/C catalyst, which enabled the transfer hydrogenation of a series of simple and functionalized nitroarenes-to-anilines, alkenes-to-alkanes, and aldehydes-to-alcohols using methanol as both the solvent and hydrogen donor. The practicability of this Pt-based protocol is showcased by demonstrating catalyst recycling and reusability as well as reaction upscaling. In addition, the Pt/C catalytic system was also adaptable for the N-methylation and N-alkylation of anilines via the borrowing hydrogen process. This work provides a simple and flexible approach to prepare a variety of value-added products from readily available methanol, Pt/C, and other starting materials.

Visible-light-driven proton reduction for semi-hydrogenation of alkynes via organophotoredox/manganese dual catalysis

Described here is a unprecedented organophotoredox/manganese dual catalyzed proton reduction and its application for semi-reduction of alkynes. The catalytic active pre-catalyst [Mn-1] can be feasibly be prepared on gram-scale from Mn(acac)₂·2H₂O in air. This dual catalytic protocol features noble-metal-free catalysts, simple ligand, and mild conditions. Besides, a unique ortho-halogen and -hydroxyl effect was observed to achieve high Z-stereoselectivity.

Correlating Thermodynamic and Kinetic Hydricities of Rhenium Hydrides

The kinetics of hydride transfer from Re(^Rbpy)(CO)₃H (bpy = 4,4'-R-2,2'-bipyridine; R = OMe, ^tBu, Me, H, Br, COOMe, CF₃) to CO₂ and seven different cationic N-heterocycles were determined. Additionally, the thermodynamic hydricities of complexes of the type Re(^Rbpy)(CO)₃H were established primarily using computational methods. Linear free-energy relationships (LFERs) derived by correlating thermodynamic and kinetic hydricities indicate that, in general, the rate of hydride transfer increases as the thermodynamic driving force for the reaction increases. Kinetic isotope effects range from inverse for hydride transfer reactions with a small driving force to normal for reactions with a large driving force. Hammett analysis indicates that hydride transfer reactions with greater thermodynamic driving force are less sensitive to changes in the electronic properties of the metal hydride, presumably because there is less buildup of charge in the increasingly early transition state. Bronsted α values were obtained for a range of hydride transfer reactions and along with DFT calculations suggest the reactions are concerted, which enables the use of Marcus theory to analyze hydride transfer reactions involving transition metal hydrides. It is notable, however, that even slight perturbations in the steric properties of the Re hydride or the hydride acceptor result in large deviations in the predicted rate of hydride transfer based on thermodynamic driving forces. This indicates that thermodynamic considerations alone cannot be used to predict the rate of hydride transfer, which has implications for catalyst design.

Manganese-catalyzed hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and hydroelementation reactions

The emerging field of organometallic catalysis has shifted towards research on Earth-abundant transition metals due to their ready availability, economic advantage, and novel properties. In this case, manganese, the third most abundant transition-metal in the Earth's crust, has emerged as one of the leading competitors. Accordingly, a large number of molecularly-defined Mn-complexes has been synthesized and employed for hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, and hydroelementation reactions. In this regard, catalyst design is based on three pillars, namely, metal-ligand bifunctionality, ligand hemilability, and redox activity. Indeed, the developed catalysts not only differ in the number of chelating atoms they possess but also their working principles, thereby leading to different turnover numbers for product molecules. Hence, the critical assessment of molecularly defined manganese catalysts in terms of chelating atoms, reaction conditions, mechanistic pathway, and product turnover number is significant. Herein, we analyze manganese complexes for their catalytic activity, versatility to allow multiple transformations and their routes to convert substrates to target molecules. This article will also be helpful to get significant insight into ligand design, thereby aiding catalysis design.

Manganese-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes with iPrOH as hydrogen source

The Mn-catalyzed transfer semihydrogenation of internal alkynes to E-alkenes is reported herein, along with Mn-catalyzed hydration of α-keto alkynes. Mechanistic studies displayed an asymmetrical Mn-hydride species performing the catalytic turnover.

Nickel-catalyzed enantioselective umpolung hydrogenation for stereoselective synthesis of β-amido esters

Nickel complexes ligated by strongly donating diphosphines catalyze enantioselective hydrogenation for the preparation of acyclic and cyclic β-amido esters. A combination of acetic acid and indium powder provides protons and electrons to form nickel hydrido complexes under umpolung hydrogenation conditions.
