Abstract
Chirality transfer from the chiral molecule (R)-1,2-propylene oxide to the achiral anion of the 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ionic liquid is observed. The chiral probe selectively affects one part of the binary ionic liquid, i. e., it has previously been shown experimentally and theoretically that this particular imidazolium cation can be affected by chirality transfer, but in the present system chirality is almost exclusively transferred to the anion and not to both parts of the solvent (anion and cation). This observation is of high relevance because of its selectivity and because anion effects are usually much more important in ionic liquid research than cation effects. From ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, a conformational analysis and dissected vibrational circular dichroism spectra are obtained to study the chirality transfer. While in the neat ionic liquid two mirror imaged trans conformers of the anion occur almost equally, we observe an excess of one of these conformers in the presence of the chiral solute, causing optical activity of the anion. Although the cis conformers are not tremendously affected by the chirality transfer, they gain in total population when (R)-1,2-propylene oxide is dissolved in the ionic liquid.

Abstract
Constituted by ions, ionic liquids (ILs) are evolving as greener solvents for many organic syntheses. Due to their high solvent power and low volatility, ionic liquids are serving as an environment-friendly substitute to conventional volatile organic solvents. The present review introduces ionic liquids as an insight into the diverse recent applications of ILs in organic synthesis.

Abstract
By simulating butan-2-ol dissolved in the chiral ionic liquid 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium (S)-alaninate, we investigate the chiral recognition of butan-2-ol in the ionic liquid. The hydrogen bonding between the chiral anion and both enantiomers of butan-2-ol is similar; however, both chiral molecules (anion and alcohol) induce an asymmetry in the achiral cation which leads to a more favorable environment for the alcohol in the heterochiral system as compared to the homochiral system and hence provides an energetic stabilization of the former.

Abstract
A series of imidazolium ionic liquid monomers with L-Proline anions (ViImCn-L-Pro and (ViIm)2Cn(L-Pro)2) were firstly synthesized, after which new copolymer materials were prepared by polymerization of the ionic liquid monomers with N,N′-methylene diacrylamide (MBA). Polymerization conditions, including the ratio of Ils(ViImCn-L-Pro or (ViIm)2Cn(L-Pro)2) and MBA, solvent, ionic liquids and initiator’s amount, were investigated and found to have an important effect on the adsorption capacity. Polymerization conditions were shown to have more significant impacts on adsorption capacities in the following order: the ratio of Ils and MBA > the amount of initiator > ionic liquids > solvent. The polymers were characterized by IR, EA, SEM, particle size distribution and TG. One of the polymers exhibited the highest selective adsorption capacity of tea polyphenols (521 mg/g). which was significantly higher than other adsorption media. The absorbed tea polyphenols could be desorbed readily with 2% hydrochloric acid methanol solution as eluent. The polymer material could maintain a higher adsorption capacity after four reuses. Based on this polymer, a new method for the efficient separation of tea polyphenols from tea water could be developed.

Abstract
Protein-rich biomass provides a valuable feedstock for the chemical industry. This Review describes every process step in the value chain from protein waste to chemicals. The first part deals with the physicochemical extraction of proteins from biomass, hydrolytic degradation to peptides and amino acids, and separation of amino acid mixtures. The second part provides an overview of physical and (bio)chemical technologies for the production of polymers, commodity chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and other fine chemicals. This can be achieved by incorporation of oligopeptides into polymers, or by modification and defunctionalization of amino acids, for example, their reduction to amino alcohols, decarboxylation to amines, (cyclic) amides and nitriles, deamination to (di)carboxylic acids, and synthesis of fine chemicals and ionic liquids. Bio- and chemocatalytic approaches are compared in terms of scope, efficiency, and sustainability.

Abstract
A series of novel benzimidazolium-based non-racemic ionic liquids (ILs) was synthesized from low-cost chiral terpenoid alcohols and fully characterized by the use of a wide variety of techniques, such as DSC, ESI-MS, ATR FT-IR, polarimetry as well as 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. The ILs were investigated as chiral shift agents for the chiral recognition of racemic mixtures of Mosher's acid potassium salt by 19F NMR spectroscopy, leading to high splitting values of the CF3 signal. Supramolecular interactions between salt and H-C2 of chiral benzimidazolium cation are responsible for the chiral recognition, as was demonstrated by experimental evidences. Indeed, the enantiomeric excess value of enantioenriched substrates depends mainly on the strength of the contact ion pairs.

Abstract
The design and synthesis of recyclable imidazolidinone catalysts using GAP chemistry/technique was described. Their applications in asymmetric Diels-Alder and Friedel-Crafts reactions with α,β-unsaturated aldehydes resulted in excellent yields and higher enantioselectivities than previous processes. As recyclable small molecular catalysts, phosphonylated imidazolidinones can be recovered and reused for up to three runs without costing significant decrease in catalytic activity.

Abstract
Two novel chiral stationary phases (CSPs) were prepared by bonding chiral imidazoliums on the surface of silica gel. The chiral imidazoles were derivatized from chiral amines, 1-phenylethylamine and 1-(1-naphthyl)ethylamine. The obtained CSPs were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis (EA), demonstrating the bonding densities of CSP 1 and CSP 2 were 0.43 mmol g-1 and 0.40 mmol g-1, respectively. These two CSPs could be used to availably separate 8 pharmaceuticals, 7 mandelic acid/its derivatives, 2 1-phenylethylamine derivatives, 1 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol, and 1 camphorsulfonic acid in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is found that CSP 1 could effectively enantioseparate most chiral analytes, especially the acidic components, while CSP 2 could enantiorecognize all chiral analytes, although a number of components did not achieve baseline separation. Additionally, the effects of mobile phase composition, mobile phase pH and salt content, chiral selector structures, and analyte structures on the enantiorecognitions of the two CSPs were investigated. It is found that high acetonitrile content in mobile phases was conducive to enantiorecognition. Mobile phase pH and salt content could alter the retention behaviors of different enantiomers of the same chiral compound, resulting in better enantioresolution. Moreover, both chiral selector structures and substituted groups of analytes played a significant role in the separation of chiral solutes.

Abstract
Within the last 25 years ionic liquids have written a tremendous success story, which is documented in a nearly uncountable amount of original research papers, reviews, and numerous applications in research and industry. These days, ionic liquids can be considered as a mature class of compounds for many different applications. Frequently, they are used as neoteric solvents for chemical tansformations, and the number of reviews on this field of research is huge. In this focused review, though, we are trying to evaluate the state of the art of ionic liquid chemistry beyond using them simply as solvents for chemical transformations. It is not meant to be a comprehensive overview on the topic; the choice of emphasis and examples rather refects the authors' personal view on the field. We are especially highlighting fields in which we believe the most fundamental developments within the next five years will take place: biomass processing, (chiral) ionic liquids from natural sources, biotransformations, and organic synthesis.
