Abstract
The nitration reaction of aromatic compounds is one of the extensively studied chemical reactions that result in the manufacturing of various industrial products applied in pharmaceuticals, dyes, perfumes, and explosives. A series of modified sulfated zirconia (SZ) catalysts SO42-/ZrO2-MxOy (M=Ce, Co, Mn, Zn, and M/SZ) doped with different metal elements by a coprecipitation method were investigated in the toluene nitration reaction. Various characterization techniques (X-ray diffraction, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia) indicated that doping metal elements in SZ led to excellent catalytic properties, increasing the specific surface area of the catalyst and facilitating the formation of a stable tetragonal zirconia phase. Doping zinc and cobalt in SZ enhanced the acidity of the catalyst and formed stronger acidic sites, promoting the generation of nitronium ions and providing more active sites for the toluene nitration reaction. Additionally, it reduced the loss of sulfate ions in the catalytic system that helped in improving the stability of the catalyst. Under the same conditions, the catalytic activity of toluene nitration reaction demonstrated the following order: Zn/SZ > Ce/SZ > Co/SZ > Mn/SZ > SZ, with the zinc-doped SZ catalyst exhibiting the best catalytic performance, achieving a toluene conversion rate of 78.58% and a para/ortho nitrotoluene ratio of 0.67.

Abstract
Here we present the discovery and development of a highly selective aromatic C-H amination reaction. This electrochemical strategy involves a cathodic reduction process that generates highly electrophilic dicationic N-centered radicals that can efficiently engage in aromatic C-H functionalization and channel the regioselectivity of the aromatic substitution. The nitrogen-radical cation-pi interaction with arenes used throughout nature leads to a charge transfer mechanism, with subsequent aromatic C-N bond formation. This electrochemical process generates aryl DABCOnium salts in excellent yields and regioselectivities (single regioisomer in most cases). The scope of the reaction on arene is broad where various functionalities such as aryl halides (bromides, chlorides, fluorides), carbonyls (ketones, esters, imides), sulfonamides, and heteroarenes (pyridines, bipyridines, and terpyridines) are well tolerated. Moreover, we disclose the synthetic utility of the aryl DABCOnium salt adducts leading to the direct access of diverse aryl piperazines and the chemoselective cleavage of the exocyclic aryl C(sp2)-N bond over electrophilic C(sp3)-N+ bonds via photoredox catalysis to afford synthetically useful aryl radicals that can engage in aryl C-C and C-P bond formation.

Abstract

Late-stage functionalization
of C–H bonds (C–H LSF)
can provide a straightforward approach to the efficient synthesis
of functionalized complex molecules. However, C–H LSF is challenging
because the C–H bond must be functionalized in the presence
of various other functional groups. In this Perspective, we evaluate
aromatic C–H LSF on the basis of four criteria—reactivity,
chemoselectivity, site-selectivity, and substrate scope—and
provide our own views on current challenges as well as promising strategies
and areas of growth going forward.

Abstract
The sol-gel method is an attractive synthetic approach in the design of advanced catalytic formulations that are based on metal and metal oxide with high degree of structural and compositional homogeneity. Nowadays, though it originated with the hydrolysis and condensation of metal alkoxides, sol-gel chemistry gathers plenty of fascinating strategies to prepare materials from solution state precursors. Low temperature chemistry, reproducibility, and high surface to volume ratios of obtained products are features that add merit to this technology. The development of different and fascinating procedure was fostered by the availability of new molecular precursors, chelating agents and templates, with the great advantage of tailoring the physico-chemical properties of the materials through the manipulation of the synthesis conditions. The aim of this review is to present an overview of the “traditional” sol-gel synthesis of tailored and multifunctional inorganic materials and their application in the main domain of heterogeneous catalysis. One of the main achievements is to stress the versatility of sol-gel preparation by highlighting its advantage over other preparation methods through some specific examples of the synthesis of catalysts.

Abstract
We report here a new, atom economical annulation to 2,1-benzisoxazole scaffolds via the BF3·Et2O-catalyzed reaction of glyoxylate esters and nitrosoarenes. The developed method represents a convergent route to this compound class from previously unexplored inputs and provides a range of 2,1-benzisoxazoles in moderate to high yields under convenient conditions. Along with exploration of substrate scope, initial mechanistic investigation through (18)O labeling and the synthesis of a reaction intermediate provides evidence for an unusual umpolung addition of glyoxylates to nitrosobenzenes with high O-selectivity, followed by a new type of Friedel-Crafts cyclization.

Abstract
Silica gel was found to be an excellent medium for some useful organic transformations under organic solvent-free conditions, such as (1) the Friedel-Crafts-type nitration of arenes using commercial aqueous 69% nitric acid alone at room temperature, (2) one-pot Wittig-type olefination of aldehydes with activated organic halides in the presence of tributyl- or triphenylphosphine and Hunig's base, and (3) the Morita-Baylis-Hillman reaction of aldehydes with methyl acrylate. After the reactions, the desired products were easily obtained in good to excellent yields through simple manipulation.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes is a polygenic disease which afflicts nearly 200 million people worldwide and is expected to increase to near epidemic levels over the next 10-15 years. Glucokinase (GK) activators are currently under investigation by a number of pharmaceutical companies with only a few reaching early clinical evaluation. A GK activator has the promise of potentially affecting both the beta-cells of the pancreas, by improving glucose sensitive insulin secretion, as well as the liver, by reducing uncontrolled glucose output and restoring post-prandial glucose uptake and storage as glycogen. Herein, we report our efforts on a sulfonamide chemotype with the aim to generate liver selective GK activators which culminated in the discovery of 3-cyclopentyl-N-(5-methoxy-thiazolo[5,4-b]pyridin-2-yl)-2-[4-(4-methyl-piperazine-1-sulfonyl)-phenyl]-propionamide (17c). This compound activated the GK enzyme (alphaK(a) = 39 nM) in vitro at low nanomolar concentrations and significantly reduced glucose levels during an oral glucose tolerance test in normal mice.

Abstract
Mg(NO3)2.6H2O was an efficient nitrating agent in the presence of a mixture of AI2O3/MeSO3H (AMA) as a novel heterogeneous system for the nitration of aromatic compounds without use of any organic solvents and with high selectivity. The reaction proceeds at room temperature for the nitration of highly reactive aromatic compounds such as phenols and anilines.

Abstract
sigma Receptors, once considered a class of opioid receptors, are now regarded as a unique class of receptors that contain binding sites for a wide range of ligands, including the drug 1-N(2',6'-dimethylmorpholino)3-(4-t-butylpropylamine) (fenpropimorph), a yeast sterol isomerase inhibitor. Because fenpropimorph has high-binding affinity to the sigma-1 receptor, we have synthesized a series of fenpropimorph-like derivatives with varying phenyl ring substituents and have characterized their binding affinities to the sigma-1 receptor. In addition, we have synthesized a carrier-free, radioiodinated fenpropimorph-like photoaffinity label, 1-N-(2',6'-dimethyl-morpholino)-3-(4-azido-3-[(125)I]iodo-phenyl)propane ([(125)I]IAF), which covalently derivatized the sigma-1 receptor (25.3 kDa) in both the rat liver and guinea pig liver membranes and the sigma-2 receptor (18 kDa) in rat liver membranes with high specificity. Furthermore, after cleaving the specific [(125)I]IAF-photolabeled sigma-1 receptor in guinea pig and rat liver membranes and the pure guinea pig sigma-1 receptor with EndoLys-C and cyanogen bromide, the [(125)I]IAF label was identified both in a peptide containing steroid binding domain-like I (SBDLI) (amino acids 91-109) and in a peptide containing steroid binding domain-like II (SBDLII) (amino acids 176-194). Because a single population of binding sites (R(2) = 0.992) for [(125)I]IAF interaction with the sigma-1 receptor was identified by (+)-[(3)H]pentazocine competitive binding with nonradioactive [(127)I]IAF, it was concluded that SBDLI (amino acids 91-109) and SBDLII (amino acids 176-194) comprises, at least in part, regions of the sigma-1 receptor ligand binding site(s).
