Synthesis and photoluminescence properties of some novel fluorenophanes

Syntheses of Acyclic and Macrocyclic Compounds Derived from 9,9-Diethylfluorene (Part I)

A series of new 9,9-diethylfluorenes consisting of three side-arms each bearing a heterocyclic, bis(carboxymethyl)amino, bis(carbamoylmethyl)amino, bis(ethoxycarbonylmethyl)amino or an amino group were prepared on the basis of 2,4,7-tris(bromomethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. Imidazolyl, benzimidazolyl, pyrazolyl, pyrrolyl, 1,3-dioxoisoindolyl and pyridinium groups were taken into account as heterocyclic units, attached to the aromatic skeleton via -CH2-, -CH2NHCH2- or -CH2N=CH- linkers. In addition to the seventeen 2,4,7-trisubstituted 9,9-diethylfluorenes, two macrocyclic compounds were prepared on the basis of 2,7-bis(aminomethyl)-9,9-diethylfluorene. The excellent yield of the macrocyclization reaction is worth a special mention. Both the acyclic and the macrocyclic fluorene-based compounds have, among other things, the potential to act as artificial receptors for different substrates in analogy to the known receptors consisting of a benzene or biphenyl core.

Synthesis and ring opening reaction of octaoctyl substituted [2.2.2.2](2,7)-fluorenophanetetraene by photooxidation

Octaoctyl substituted fluorenophanetetraene has been synthesized and the photooxidation of the fluorenophanetetraene gives all trans linear fluorenevinylene with aldehyde end groups.

Synthesis of macrocyclic receptors with intrinsic fluorescence featuring quinizarin moieties

An unprecedented class of macrocycles with intrinsic fluorescence consisting of phenolic trimers and quinizarin is developed. Though they are lacking strong hydrogen bonds as observed in calixarenes, the two examples introduced here each adopt a vase-like conformation with all four aromatic units pointing in one direction (syn orientation). This "cone" conformation has been confirmed by NMR spectroscopy, molecular modeling, and X-ray crystallography. The laminar, electron-rich fluorophore as part of the macrocycle allows additional contacts to enclosed guest molecules.

Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical properties of chiral and achiral thiadiazolophanes

One pot synthesis of chiral and achiral 2:2 oligomeric thiadiazolophane 1 and 3 and 3:3 oligomeric thiadiazolophane 2 and 4 with (S)-BINOL and methylene bis-naphthyl spacer unit has been achieved. The photophysical and electrochemical properties revealed higher degree of aggregation in 2:2 oligomor than 3:3 oligomer. Energy minimized calculations show that 3:3 oligomer has less heat of formation than 2:2 oligomer.
