Synthesis of functionalized tetracene dicarboxylic imides

Three distinct conductance states in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon derivatives

Tight-binding model (TBM) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were employed. Both simulations have demonstrated that the electrical conductance for eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be modulated by varying the number of aromatic rings (NAR) within the aromatic derivatives. TBM simulations reveal three distinct conductance states: low, medium and high for the studied PAH derivatives. The three distinct conductance states suggested by TBM are supported by DFT transmission curves, where the low conductance evidenced by T(E) = 0, for benzene, naphthalene, pyrene and anthracene. While azulene and anthanthrene exhibit a medium conductance as T(E) = 1, and tetracene and dibenzocoronene possess a high conductance with T(E) = 2. Low, medium and high values were elucidated according to the energy gap E g and E g gaps are strongly dependent on the NAR in the PAH derivatives. This study also suggests that any PAH molecules are a conductor if E g < 0.20 eV. A linear relationship between the conductance and NAR (G ∝ NAR) was found and conductance follows the order G (benzene, 1 NAR) < G (anthanthrene, 4 NAR) < G (dibenzocoronene, 9 NAR). The proposed study suggests a relevant step towards the practical application of molecular electronics and future device application.

Energy gap and aromatic molecular rings

The manuscript combines rational density functional theory simulations and experimental data to investigate the electrical properties of eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The optimized geometries reveal a preference for one-row, two-row and three-row ring distributions. Band structure plots demonstrate an inverse correlation between the number of aromatic rings and band gap size, with a specific order observed across the PAHs. Gas phase simulations support these findings, though differences in values are noted compared to the literature. Introducing a two-row ring distribution concept resolves discrepancies, particularly in azulene. The B3LYP function successfully bridges theoretical and experimental gaps, particularly in large PAHs. The manuscript highlights the potential for designing electronic devices based on different-sized PAHs, emphasizing a multi-ring distribution approach and opening new avenues for practical applications.

Cata-Annulated Azaacene Bisimides

Ultra‐electron‐deficient azaacenes were synthesized via Buchwald‐Hartwig coupling of ortho‐diaminoarenes with chlorinated mellophanic diimide followed by oxidation of the intermediate N,N’‐dihydro compounds with MnO₂ or PbO₂. The resulting cata‐annulated bisimide azaacenes have ultrahigh electron affinities with first reduction potentials as low as −0.35 V recorded for a tetraazapentacene. Attempts to prepare a tetrakis(dicarboximide)tetraazaheptacene resulted in the formation of a symmetric butterfly dimer.

Reduced Knoevenagel Reaction of Acetetracenylene-1,2-dione with Acceptor Units for Luminescent Tetracene Derivatives

Acetetracenylene-1,2-dione reacted with 3-ethylrhodanine in the presence of piperidine and Hantzsch ester via a Knoevenagel condensation-reduction sequence to give a tetracene-rhodanine adduct. This reduced Knoevenagel product exhibited magenta luminescence with a fluorescence quantum yield of φ = 0.34 and fluorescence lifetime of τ = 13.2 ns in toluene. Electrochemical studies and charge carrier transport measurements revealed ambipolar properties with hole and electron mobilities of 5.1 × 10^-7 and 1.6 × 10^-4 cm²/(V s), respectively.

Highly π-extended tetrathiafulvalene analogues derived from pentacene-5,7,12,14-tetraone

A new π-extended tetrathiafulvalene analogue capable of reversibly revealing and concealing a central pentacene segment under redox control was synthesized and characterized by various spectroscopic and electrochemical analyses and DFT calculations.

Closed-shell and open-shell 2D nanographenes

This chapter describes a series of two-dimensional (2D) expanded arene networks, also known as nanographenes, with either closed-shell or open-shell electronic structure in the ground state. These systems are further categorized into three classes on a basis of different edge structures: those with zigzag edges only, those with armchair edges only, and those possessing both. Distinctive physical properties of these 2D aromatic systems are closely related to their structural characteristics and provide great potential for them as materials for different applications.

Oxygen insertion of o-quinone under catalytic hydrogenation conditions

An oxygen-insertion reaction that transforms an o-quinone and a conjugated α-diketone substrate into an anhydride product or derivative under catalytic hydrogenation conditions is reported. The experiments and computations indicate that the oxygen insertion proceeds via a radical mechanism mediated by an acetoxyl radical.

Lateral extension of π conjugation along the bay regions of bisanthene through a Diels-Alder cycloaddition reaction

Diels-Alder cycloaddition reactions at the bay regions of bisanthene (1) with dienophiles such as 1,4-naphthoquinone have been investigated. The products were submitted to nucleophilic addition followed by reductive aromatization reactions to afford the laterally extended bisanthene derivatives 2 and 3. Attempted synthesis of a larger expanded bisanthene 4 revealed an unexpected hydrogenation reaction at the last reductive aromatization step. Unusual Michael addition was observed on quinone 14, which was obtained by Diels-Alder reaction between 1 and 1,4-anthraquinone. Compounds 1-3 exhibited near-infrared (NIR) absorption and emission with high-to-moderate fluorescent quantum yields. Their structures and absorption spectra were studied by density function theory and non-planar twisted structures were calculated for 2 and 3. All compounds showed amphoteric redox behavior with multiple oxidation/reduction waves. Oxidative titration with SbCl(5) gave stable radical cations, and the process was followed by UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopic measurements. Their photostability was measured and correlated to their different geometries and electronic structures.
