Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were performed to study the palladium/Brønsted acid-catalyzed methoxycarbonylation and hydromethoxylation reactions of internal alkene. The calculated results show that the pyridyl group (N atom) in bidentate phosphine ligand with built-in base (L1) plays a crucial role in controlling the selectivity. With the help of the pyridyl group, the methanolysis steps in the methoxycarbonylation reaction and the hydromethoxylation reaction become easy, and both the linear ester methyl 3,4-dimethylpentanoate (P1) and the hydromethoxylation product 2-methoxy-2,3-dimethylbutane (P2) could be obtained. In contrast, the possibility of leading to branched ester P1' was ruled out according to our calculations. The steric effect could account for the observed selectivity. In the presence of the DPEphos ligand (L2) that does not bear the pyridyl group, the methanolysis step in the methoxycarbonylation reaction becomes the rate-determining step with a high overall energy barrier. Neither linear nor branched methoxycarbonylation product could be generated. The palladium/Brønsted acid co-catalyzed hydromethoxylation also become difficult without the assistance of the pyridyl group in the presence of the L2 ligand. Instead, TsOH-catalyzed hydromethoxylation reaction could take place to generate the ether product P2.

Abstract
The synthesis of magnetic iron-carbon composites (Fe/C) from waste avocado seeds via hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) has been demonstrated for the first time. These materials are shown to be effective in adsorption and catalytic applications, with performances comparable to or higher than materials produced through conventional processing routes. Avocado seeds have been processed in high-temperature water (230 °C) at elevated pressure (30 bar at room temperature) in the presence of iron nitrate and iron sulfate, in a process mimicking natural coalification. Characterization of the synthesized material has been carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), magnetometry, and through surface area measurements. The supported iron particles are observed to be predominately magnetite, with an oxidized hematite surface region. The presence of iron catalyzes the formation of an extended, ordered polymeric structure in the avocado seed-derived carbon. The magnetic Fe/C has been demonstrated as an adsorbent for environmental wastewater treatment using methylene blue and indigo carmine. Kinetic analysis suggests that the adsorbates are chemisorbed, with the positive surface charge of Fe/C being preferential for indigo carmine adsorption (49 mg g-1). Additionally, Fe/C has been evaluated as a heterogeneous catalyst for the hydroalkoxylation of phenylacetylene with ethylene glycol to 2-benzyl-1,3-dioxolane. Product yields of 45% are obtained, with 100% regioselectivity to the formed isomer. The solid catalyst has the advantages of being prepared from a waste material and of easy removal after reaction via magnetic separation. These developments provide opportunities to produce carbon-based materials for a variety of high-value applications, potentially also including energy storage and biopharmaceuticals, from a wide range of lignocellulosic biomass feedstocks.

Abstract
Rapid assembly of saturated nitrogen heterocycles-the synthetically more challenging variants of their aromatic relatives-can expedite the synthesis of biologically relevant molecules. Starting from a benzylic alcohol tethered to an unactivated alkene, an iron-catalyzed tandem alcohol substitution and hydroamination provides access to tetrahydroisoquinolines in a single synthetic step. Using a mild iron-based catalyst, the combination of these operations forms two carbon-nitrogen bonds and provides a unique annulation strategy to access this valuable core.

Abstract
The hydrofunctionalization of alkenes, explored for over 100 years, offers the potential for a direct, atom-economical approach to value-added products. While thermodynamically favored, the kinetic barrier to such processes necessitates the use of catalysts to control selectivity and reactivity. Modern variants typically rely on noble metals that require different ligands for each class of hydrofunctionalization, thereby limiting generality. This Letter describes a general iron-based system that catalyzes the hydroamination and hydroetherification of simple unactivated olefins.

Abstract
An enantioselective chemoenzymatic two-step one-pot transformation of styrene to 1-phenylethylamine has been developed based on combining an initial Pd/Cu-catalyzed Wacker oxidation of styrene with a subsequent reductive amination of the in situ formed acetophenone. As a nitrogen source only ammonia is needed. The incompatible catalysts were separated by means of a polydimethylsiloxane membrane, thus leading to quantitative conversion and an excellent enantiomeric excess of the corresponding amine. The overall one-pot process formally corresponds to an asymmetric hydroamination of styrene with ammonia.

Abstract
Simple and readily available iron(III) triflate turned out to be a cheap, environmentally benign, and efficient catalyst for the direct etherification of alcohols. The use of ammonium chloride as an additive (5 mol %, 1 equiv relative to catalyst) suppressed the side reactions completely and ensured the selective ether formation even on challenging substrates containing electron-donating substituents. This method allows the selective synthesis of symmetrical ethers from benzylic secondary alcohols and unsymmetrical ethers directly from secondary and primary alcohols. Moreover, transetherification of symmetrical ethers using primary alcohols is attained. The reaction progress of symmetrical ether and unsymmetrical ether formation followed zero-order and first-order kinetics, respectively. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements of the reaction mixture and simple iron(III) triflate clearly indicated that oxidation state of the metal center remains same throughout the catalysis. Mechanistic studies confirmed that the unsymmetrical ether formation occurs via the in situ formed symmetrical ethers.

Abstract
A unique Markovnikov hydroalkoxylation of unactivated olefins with a cobalt complex, silane, and N-fluoropyridinium salt is reported. Further optimization of reaction conditions yielded high functional group tolerance and versatility of alcoholic solvent employed, including methanol, i-propanol, and t-butanol. Use of trifluorotoluene as a solvent made the use of alcohol in stoichiometric amount possible. Mechanistic insight into this novel catalytic system is also discussed. Experimental results suggest that catalysis involves both carbon radical and carbocation intermediates.
