Water-soluble glycodendrimers: synthesis and stabilization of catalytically active Pd and Pt nanoparticles

Cu0-Loaded organo-montmorillonite with improved affinity towards hydrogen: an insight into matrix-metal and non-contact hydrogen-metal interactions

Copper-loaded organo-montmorillonite showed improved affinity towards hydrogen under ambient conditions. Clay ion exchange with a propargyl-ended cation followed by thiol-yne coupling with thioglycerol resulted in a porous structure with a 6 fold higher specific surface area, which dramatically decreased after copper incorporation. X-ray diffraction and photoelectron spectrometry, nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H and ¹³C) and CO₂-thermal programmed desorption revealed strong sulfur:Cu⁰ and oxygen:Cu⁰ interactions. This was explained in terms of structure compaction that 'traps' Cu⁰ nanoparticles (CuNPs) and reduces their mobility. Transmission electron microscopy showed predominant 1.0-1.5 nm CuNPs. Hydrogen capture appears to involve predominantly physical interaction, since differential scanning calorimetry measurements gave low desorption heat and almost complete gas release between 20 °C and 75 °C. Possible hydrogen condensation within the compacted structure should hinder gas diffusion inside CuNPs and prevent chemisorption. These results allow safe hydrogen storage with easy gas release to be envisaged even at room temperature under vacuum. The reversible capture of hydrogen can be even more attractive when using natural inorganic supports and commercial plant-derived dendrimers judiciously functionalized, even at the expense of porosity.

Carbohydrates in Supramolecular Chemistry

Carbohydrates are involved in a variety of biological processes. The ability of sugars to form a large number of hydrogen bonds has made them important components for supramolecular chemistry. We discuss recent advances in the use of carbohydrates in supramolecular chemistry and reveal that carbohydrates are useful building blocks for the stabilization of complex architectures. Systems are presented according to the scaffold that supports the glyco-conjugate: organic macrocycles, dendrimers, nanomaterials, and polymers are considered. Glyco-conjugates can form host-guest complexes, and can self-assemble by using carbohydrate-carbohydrate interactions and other weak interactions such as π-π interactions. Finally, complex supramolecular architectures based on carbohydrate-protein interactions are discussed.

Recent advances in click chemistry applied to dendrimer synthesis

Dendrimers are monodisperse polymers grown in a fractal manner from a central point. They are poised to become the cornerstone of nanoscale devices in several fields, ranging from biomedicine to light-harvesting. Technical difficulties in obtaining these molecules has slowed their transfer from academia to industry. In 2001, the arrival of the "click chemistry" concept gave the field a major boost. The flagship reaction, a modified Hüisgen cycloaddition, allowed researchers greater freedom in designing and building dendrimers. In the last five years, advances in click chemistry saw a wider use of other click reactions and a notable increase in the complexity of the reported structures. This review covers key developments in the click chemistry field applied to dendrimer synthesis from 2010 to 2015. Even though this is an expert review, basic notions and references have been included to help newcomers to the field.

Metal-inorganic-organic matrices as efficient sorbents for hydrogen storage

Stabilization of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) without re-aggregation is a major challenge. An unprecedented strategy is developed for achieving high dispersion of copper(0) or palladium(0) on montmorillonite-supported diethanolamine or thioglycerol. This results in novel metal-inorganic-organic matrices (MIOM) that readily capture hydrogen at ambient conditions, with easy release under air stream. Hydrogen retention appears to involve mainly physical interactions, slightly stronger on thioglycerol-based MIOM (S-MIOM). Thermal enhancement of desorption suggests also a contribution of chemical interactions. The increase of hydrogen uptake with prolonged contact times arises from diffusion hindrance, which appears to be beneficial by favoring hydrogen entrapment. Even with compact structures, MIOMs act as efficient sorbents with much higher efficiency factor (1.14-1.17 mmol H 2 m(-2)) than many other sophisticated adsorbents reported in the literature. This opens new prospects for hydrogen storage and potential applications in microfluidic hydrogenation reactions.

Click reactions as a key step for an efficient and selective synthesis of D-xylose-based ILs

d-Xylose-based ionic liquids have been prepared from d-xylose following a five steps reaction sequence, the key step being a click cycloaddition. These ionic liquids (ILs) have been characterized through classical analytical methods (IR, NMR, mass spectroscopy, elemental analysis) and their stability constants, Tg and Tdec, were also determined. Considering their properties and their hydrophilicity, these compounds could be alternative solvents for chemical applications under mild conditions.

Multivalent glycoconjugate syntheses and applications using aromatic scaffolds

Glycan-protein interactions are of utmost importance in several biological phenomena. Although the variety of carbohydrate residues in mammalian cells is limited to less than a dozen different sugars, their spatial topographical presentation in what is now associated as the "glycocodes" provides the fundamental keys for specific and high affinity "lock-in" recognition events associated with a wide range of pathologies. Toward deciphering our understanding of these glycocodes, chemists have developed new creative tools that included dendrimer chemistry in order to provide monodisperse multivalent glycoconjugates. This review provides a survey of the numerous aromatic architectures generated for the multivalent presentation of relevant carbohydrates using covalent attachment or supramolecular self-assemblies. The basic concepts toward their controlled syntheses will be described using modern synthetic procedures with a particular emphasis on powerful organometallic methodologies. The large variety of dendritic aromatic scaffolds, together with a brief survey of their unique biophysical and biological properties will be critically reviewed. The distinctiveness of the resulting multivalent glycoarchitectures, encompassing glycoclusters, glycodendrimers and molecularly defined self-assemblies, in forming well organized cross-linked lattices with multivalent carbohydrate binding proteins (lectins) together with their photophysical, medical, and imaging properties will also be briefly highlighted. The topic will be presented in increasing order of aromatic backbone complexities and will end with fullerenes together with self-assembled nanostructures, thus complementing the various scaffolds described in this special thematic issue dedicated to multivalent glycoscience.

Click dendrimers and triazole-related aspects: catalysts, mechanism, synthesis, and functions. A bridge between dendritic architectures and nanomaterials

One of the primary recent improvements in molecular chemistry is the now decade-old concept of click chemistry. Typically performed as copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne (CuAAC) Huisgen-type 1,3-cycloadditions, this reaction has many applications in biomedicine and materials science. The application of this chemistry in dendrimer synthesis beyond the zeroth generation and in nanoparticle functionalization requires stoichiometric use of the most common click catalyst, CuSO(4)·5H(2)O with sodium ascorbate. Efforts to develop milder reaction conditions for these substrates have led to the design of polydentate nitrogen ligands. Along these lines, we have described a new, efficient, practical, and easy-to-synthesize catalytic complex, [Cu(I)(hexabenzyltren)]Br, 1 [tren = tris(2-aminoethyl)amine], for the synthesis of relatively large dendrimers and functional gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). This efficient catalyst can be used alone in 0.1% mol amounts for nondendritic click reactions or with the sodium-ascorbate additive, which inhibits aerobic catalyst oxidation. Alternatively, catalytic quantities of the air-stable compounds hexabenzyltren and CuBr added to the click reaction medium can provide analogously satisfactory results. Based on this catalyst as a core, we have also designed and synthesized analogous Cu(I)-centered dendritic catalysts that are much less air-sensitive than 1 and are soluble in organic solvents or in water (depending on the nature of the terminal groups). These multivalent catalysts facilitate efficient click chemistry and exert positive dendritic effects that mimic enzyme activity. We propose a monometallic CuAAC click mechanism for this process. Although the primary use of click chemistry with dendrimers has been to decorate dendrimers with a large number of molecules for medicinal or materials purposes, we are specifically interested in the formation of intradendritic [1,2,3]-triazole heterocycles that coordinate to transition-metal ions via their nitrogen atoms. We describe applications including molecular recognition of anions and cations and the stabilization of transition metal nanoparticles according to a principle pioneered by Crooks with poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers, and in particular, the control of structural and reactivity parameters in which the intradendritic [1,2,3]-triazoles and peripheral tripodal tri(ethylene glycol) termini play key roles in the click-dendrimer mediated synthesis and stabilization of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs). By varying these parameters, we have stabilized water-soluble, weakly liganded AuNPs between 1.8 and 50 nm in size and have shown large differences in behavior between AuNPs and PdNPs. Overall, the new catalyst design and the possibilities of click dendrimer chemistry introduce a bridge between dendritic architectures and the world of nanomaterials for multiple applications.
