Abstract
As an important class of platform molecules, planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds could be transformed into various functional groups offering facile synthesis of chiral ligands and catalysts. However, developing efficient and straightforward methods for accessing enantiopure planar chiral ferrocene carbonyl compounds, especially ferroceneformaldehydes, remains highly challenging. Herein, we report a rhodium(I)/phosphoramidite-catalyzed enantioselective C-H bond arylation of ferroceneformaldehydes. Readily available aryl halides such as aryl iodides, aryl bromides, and even aryl chlorides are suitable coupling partners in this transformation, leading to a series of planar chiral ferroceneformaldehydes in good yields and excellent enantioselectivity (up to 83% yield and >99% ee). The aldehyde group could be transformed into diverse functional groups smoothly, and enantiopure Ugi's amine and PPFA analogues could be synthesized efficiently. The latter was found to be a highly efficient ligand in Pd-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions. Mechanistic experiments supported the formation of imine intermediates as the key step during the reaction.

Abstract
As the complexity of organic molecules utilized by mankind increases, the phenomenon of atropisomerism is more frequently encountered. While a variety of well-established methods enable the control of a stereogenic center, a catalytic method for controlling a stereogenic axis in one substrate is typically unavailable for controlling axial chirality in other substrates with a similar structure. Herein, we report o-amidobiaryl as a flexible platform for chiral phosphoric acid-catalyzed atroposelective dynamic kinetic resolution. To demonstrate our strategy, three distinct types of arylindoles were utilized and reacted intermolecularly with ketomalonate in the presence of chiral phosphoric acid. An investigation of 46 substrates having an aromatic ring in different positions yields the desired products with excellent enantioselectivities. Computational investigation into the origin of enantioselectivity highlights the importance of the NH group. Given the biological significance of indoles, antiproliferative effects have been investigated; our scaffold exhibits good efficacy in this regard.

Abstract
Planar chirality is an important form of molecular chirality that can be utilized to induce enantioselectivity when incorporated into transition metal catalysts. However, due to synthetic constraints, the use of late transition metal planar chiral complexes to conduct enantioselective transformations has been limited. Additionally, the published methods surrounding the stereochemical assignment of planar chiral compounds are sometimes conflicting, making proper assignment difficult. This review aims to provide clarity on the methods available to assign planar chirality and provide an overview on the synthesis and use of late transition metal planar chiral complexes as enantioselective catalysts.

Abstract
Mechanism-guided reaction development is a well-appreciated research paradigm in chemistry since the merging of mechanistic knowledge would accelerate the discovery of new synthetic methods. Low-valent transition metals such as Pd(0)- and Rh(I)-catalyzed C-H arylation with aryl (pseudo)halides is among the enabling reactions for the exclusive cross-coupling of two different aryl partners. However, different from the situation of Pd(0)-catalysis, the mechanism of Rh(I)-catalyzed C-H arylation is underexplored. The sequence of the elementary steps of aryl C-H activation and oxidative addition of aryl (pseudo)halides remains unclear. Herein, we report comprehensive experimental and computational studies toward explicit mechanistic understandings of Rh(I)-catalyzed intermolecular asymmetric C-H arylation between 2-pyridinylferrocenes and aryl bromides. The identification of each elementary step in the catalytic cycle and the structural characterization of the key intermediates and transition states allow the rational design and development of challenging intramolecular reactions. The successful realization of this reaction mode set the foundation for the facile synthesis of planar chiral [m]ferrocenophanes (m = 6-8), a class of rarely explored target molecules with strained structures and intriguing molecular topology.

Abstract
In the last decade, planar chiral ferrocenes have attracted a growing interest in several fields, particularly in asymmetric catalysis, medicinal chemistry, chiroptical spectroscopy and electrochemistry. In this frame, the access to pure or enriched enantiomers of planar chiral ferrocenes has become essential, relying on the availability of efficient asymmetric synthesis procedures and enantioseparation methods. Despite this, in enantioseparation science, these metallocenes were not comprehensively explored, and very few systematic analytical studies were reported in this field so far. On the other hand, enantioselective high-performance liquid chromatography has been frequently used by organic and organometallic chemists in order to measure the enantiomeric purity of planar chiral ferrocenes prepared by asymmetric synthesis. On these bases, this review aims to provide the reader with a comprehensive overview on the enantioseparation of planar chiral ferrocenes by discussing liquid-phase enantioseparation methods developed over time, integrating this main topic with the most relevant aspects of ferrocene chemistry. Thus, the main structural features of ferrocenes and the methods to model this class of metallocenes will be briefly summarized. In addition, planar chiral ferrocenes of applicative interest as well as the limits of asymmetric synthesis for the preparation of some classes of planar chiral ferrocenes will also be discussed with the aim to orient analytical scientists towards 'hot topics' and issues which are still open for accessing enantiomers of ferrocenes featured by planar chirality.

Abstract
Diastereo- and enantioselective kinetic resolution of racemic planar-chiral 1-R-2-vinylferrocenes (rac-1) was attained by the molybdenum-catalyzed asymmetric metathesis dimerization (AMD). Two sequential AMD reactions of rac-1a (R = Br) provided (E)-(S,S)-1,2-di(2-bromoferrocenyl)ethylene in >99% ee, which was converted to (S,S)-1,2-bis[(2-diphenylphosphino)ferrocenyl]ethane (S,S)-5. Planar-chiral bisphosphine (S,S)-5 coordinated to a dichloropalladium(II) fragment in a trans-chelating fashion, which was applied as a chiral ligand in the palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation showing enantioselectivity of up to 90% ee.

Abstract
It is not a coincidence that both chirality and noncovalent interactions are ubiquitous in nature and synthetic molecular systems. Noncovalent interactivity between chiral molecules underlies enantioselective recognition as a fundamental phenomenon regulating life and human activities. Thus, noncovalent interactions represent the narrative thread of a fascinating story which goes across several disciplines of medical, chemical, physical, biological, and other natural sciences. This review has been conceived with the awareness that a modern attitude toward molecular chirality and its consequences needs to be founded on multidisciplinary approaches to disclose the molecular basis of essential enantioselective phenomena in the domain of chemical, physical, and life sciences. With the primary aim of discussing this topic in an integrated way, a comprehensive pool of rational and systematic multidisciplinary information is provided, which concerns the fundamentals of chirality, a description of noncovalent interactions, and their implications in enantioselective processes occurring in different contexts. A specific focus is devoted to enantioselection in chromatography and electromigration techniques because of their unique feature as "multistep" processes. A second motivation for writing this review is to make a clear statement about the state of the art, the tools we have at our disposal, and what is still missing to fully understand the mechanisms underlying enantioselective recognition.

Abstract
Single enantiomers of three 1,2-substituted ferrocene derivatives, i.e. 1-methoxymethyl-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (1), 1-formyl-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (2) and 1-iodo-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (3), sharing the common hydroxymethyl substituent and the presence of planar chirality only, were investigated for their spectroscopic (IR and UV) and chiroptical (VCD and ECD) properties. Both enantiomers of 1 were obtained for the first time in optically pure form by lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of the corresponding racemate (±)-1 and separately converted into formyl derivatives (+)-2 and (-)-2. The experimental spectroscopic and chiroptical data were compared with DFT calculated spectra and excellent correspondence was found for all compounds, allowing one to confirm the previously assigned absolute configurations. The common features in the VCD spectra of a doublet between 940 and 965 cm-1 and the short-wavelength (about 200 nm) doublet and the longest wavelength band in the ECD spectra were analyzed to test whether they may be taken as markers of the absolute configuration (AC). The predominance of conformers with intramolecular hydrogen bond for the first two investigated compounds is predicted by conformational analysis and also confirmed by NMR.

Abstract
Planar chirality is one of the most fascinating expressions of chirality, exploited by Nature to lock three-dimensional chiral conformations and, more recently, by chemists to create new chiral reagents, catalysts and functional organic materials. Nevertheless, the shortage of protocols able to induce and secure asymmetry during the generation of these unique chiral entities has dissuaded chemists to exploit their structural properties. This Minireview intends to illustrate the limited but remarkable catalytic methodologies reported for the production of planar chirality in strained molecules and serve as source of inspiration for the development of new unconventional protocols that are expected to come in the near future.

Abstract
The simultaneous construction of two different chiralities via a simple operation poses considerable challenge. Herein a cationic gold-catalyzed asymmetric hydroarylation of ortho-alkynylaryl ferrocenes derivatives is developed, which enable the simultaneous construction of axial and planar chirality. The here identified TY-Phos derived gold complex is responsible for the high yield, good diastereoselectivity (>20:1 dr), high enantioselectivities (up to 99% ee) and mild conditions. The catalyst system also shows potential application in the synthesis of chiral biaryl compounds. The cause of high enantioselectivity of this hydroarylation is investigated with density functional theory caculation. The simultaneous construction of two different types of chiralities is challenging. Here, the authors report a cationic gold-catalyzed asymmetric hydroarylation of ortho-alkynylaryl ferrocene derivatives, which enabled the simultaneous construction of axial and planar chirality.

Abstract
Planar-chiral transition metal complexes are useful chiral auxiliaries in organic and organometallic chemistry, and they have been utilized as chiral ligands, chiral catalysts, or chiral building blocks, etc. Despite the importance of such planar-chiral species in asymmetric synthesis, their preparation in optically active forms is still a challenging problem. Indeed, reported examples of catalytic enantioselective synthesis of planar-chiral complexes have been rare, and this has been a developing area in this field. In this personal account, recent results from our research group on the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of various planar-chiral transition metal complexes are summarized. The asymmetric ring-closing metathesis reactions catalyzed by the well-defined molybdenum-alkylidene species are powerful methods to control the planar chirality in ferrocenes, ruthenocenes, (η6 -arene)chromium complexes, and (η5 -cyclopentadienyl)manganese(I) complexes. Application of the enantiomerically enriched complexes obtained by our methods is described as well.

Abstract
Ferrocene, the crown of metallocene family, is widely studied as a functional
unit in electrochemical and catalytic applications due to its sandwich structure. Ferrocene
moieties can be embedded into the polymer backbone, leading to main-chain ferrocenecontaining
polymers. These polymeric materials combine the unique functionalities of
iron center with the processabilities of polymers. As one of the choice polymerization
techniques, acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization serves as a versatile
method to prepare main-chain ferrocene-containing polymers under mild conditions using
α,ω-dienes as monomers. This paper overviews main-chain ferrocene-containing polymers
prepared by ADMET polymerization. Advances in the design, synthesis and applications
of this class of organometallic monomers and polymers are detailed.

Abstract
![]()
A catalytic
asymmetric direct C–H arylation of (η6-arene)chromium
complexes to obtain planar-chiral compounds
is reported. The use of the hemilabile ligand H8-BINAP(O)
is key to providing high enantioselectivity in this transformation.
We show that this methodology opens the door to the synthesis of a
variety of planar-chiral chromium derivatives which can be easily
transformed into planar chiral mono- or diphosphines. Mechanistic
studies, including synthesis and characterization of Pd and Ag complexes
and their detection in the reaction mixture, suggest a Pd-catalyzed/Ag-promoted
catalytic system where Ag carries out the C–H activation step.

Abstract
An enantiopure helical ferrocene ( Rp)-5 with five ortho-condensed aromatic rings was synthesized using a PtCl2-catalyzed cycloisomerization of planar-chiral 2-ethynyl-1-(4-phenanthrenyl)ferrocene ( Rp)-6f, prepared in 3 steps from known enantiopure sulfinyl ferrocenyl boronic acid ( SS, Sp)-7, as the source of planar chirality. This pentacyclic helical ferrocene showed a very high optical rotation value and strong circular dichroism (CD) signals.

Abstract
Bulky perneopentyloxy-pillar[5]arene (Pillar-1) was synthesized and its conformational mobility was investigated using variable-temperature 1H NMR spectroscopy. The host–guest interactions between Pillar-1 and n-octyltrimethylammonium hexafluorophosphate (OMA) were investigated, and the formation of a 1 : 1 complex was revealed via1H NMR. Planar-chiral isomers were synthesized via the reaction of a hydroxy-functionalized pillar[5]arene with chiral derivatization agent (S)-(+)-MTPA-Cl. The (Sp, R)-and (Rp, R)-forms of the pillar[5]arene diastereomers were isolated by HPLC, and their structures were analyzed by 19F NMR. HPLC measurements indicated that racemization did not take place at 40 °C for 72 h. Bulky perneopentyloxy-pillar[5]arene was synthesized. Complexation behavior and conformational mobility were investigated using 1H NMR spectroscopy. Isolation of planar-chiral pillar[5]arenes using a chiral derivatization agent were carried out.![]()

Abstract
Versatile C–H amidations of synthetically useful ferrocenes were accomplished by weakly-coordinating thiocarbonyl-assisted cobalt catalysis. Thus, carboxylates enabled ferrocene C–H nitrogenations with dioxazolones, featuring ample substrate scope and robust functional group tolerance. Mechanistic studies provided strong support for a facile organometallic C–H activation manifold.

Abstract
Ferrocenes are of great interest in the fields of materials science, organic synthesis, and biomedical research. Of particular significance is the fact that ferrocenes bearing planar chirality have been demonstrated to be highly efficient ligands or catalysts in asymmetric catalysis, some of which have been employed in the industrial synthesis of pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals. So far, the main methods for the synthesis of planar chiral ferrocenes involve diastereoselective directed ortho-metalation (DoM), enantioselective DoM, and chiral resolution. Despite the fact that these approaches are well developed and widely applied, the use of chiral auxiliaries or external stoichiometric chiral bases is required in most cases. Additionally, the practicality of these processes is hampered by the requirement of sensitive organometallic reagents, the poor compatibility with functional groups, and the low atom economy in some cases. Therefore, the development of highly efficient strategies to introduce planar chirality on the backbone of ferrocene that do not possess these limitations is highly desirable. Meanwhile, transition-metal-catalyzed asymmetric C-H bond functionalization reactions have attracted much attention over the past few years owing to their emerging potential for providing a straightforward approach for the preparation of chiral molecules. In addition to the majority of the work focusing on the installation of central chirality, methods for the catalytic asymmetric synthesis of planar chiral compounds via C-H bond functionalization have also been explored. In this Account, we summarize our recent efforts aimed at the development of novel methods to synthesize planar chiral compounds via asymmetric C-H bond functionalization and also highlight related achievements by other groups. First, we briefly introduce the precedent examples of diastereoselective and enantioselective synthesis of planar chiral ferrocenes. Subsequently, asymmetric syntheses of structurally diverse planar chiral ferrocenes via Pd [Pd(II), Pd(0)]-, Ir-, Rh-, Au-, and Pt-catalyzed C-H bond functionalization are described. These methods have impressive advantages over traditional approaches for the synthesis of functionalized planar chiral ferrocenes in terms of both step- and atom-economies. Notably, the products of these processes are easily transformed into a variety of new catalysts or ligands, which have been demonstrated to promote efficient asymmetric reactions. Moreover, DFT calculations have been conducted to explore the origin of the excellent enantioselectivity of Pd-catalyzed enantioselective C-H bond functionalization reactions. Progress made in the area of asymmetric C-H bond functionalization provides an effective platform for the design and synthesis of planar chiral ferrocenes.
