Extended benzodifuran–thiophene systems connected with azomethine junctions: synthesis and electronic properties

Crystallization of Nano-Sized Macromolecules by the Example of Hexakis-[4-{(N-Allylimino)methyl}phenoxy]cyclotriphosphazene

The synthesized compound was characterized by ³¹P, ¹³C, and ¹H NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF mass spectroscopy. According to DSC data, the compound was initially crystalline, but the crystal structure was defective. The crystals suitable for X-ray diffraction study were prepared by slow precipitation of the compound from a solution by a vapor of another solvent. A study of the single crystal obtained in this way demonstrated that the phosphazene ring has a flattened chair conformation. It was found that the sphere circumscribed around the compound molecule has a diameter of 2.382 nm.

Buchwald-Hartwig Amination of Aryl Halides with Heterocyclic Amines in the Synthesis of Highly Fluorescent Benzodifuran-Based Star-Shaped Organic Semiconductors

The study of palladium-catalyzed amination of bromobenzene with aromatic and heterocyclic amines, widely used in the synthesis of organic semiconductors, was performed. The best conditions for the coupling of aryl bromides with carbazole, diphenylamine, phenoxazine, phenothiazine, 9,9-dimethyl-9,10-dihydroacridine, and their derivatives have been developed. Based on the results, nine new star-shaped organic semiconductors, exhibiting up to 100% fluorescent quantum yield in the 400-550 nm range, have been synthesized in good yields. The TDDFT calculations of the absorption spectra revealed a good correlation with experimental results and slight solvatochromic effects with a change in the polarity of the solvent.

Recent Advances of Furan and Its Derivatives Based Semiconductor Materials for Organic Photovoltaics

The state-of-the-art bulk-heterojunction (BHJ)-type organic solar cells (OSCs) have exhibited power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of exceeding 18%. Thereinto, thiophene and its fused-ring derivatives play significant roles in facilitating the development of OSCs due to their excellent semiconducting natures. Furan as thiophene analogue, is a ubiquitous motif in naturally occurring organic compounds. Driven by the advantages of furan, such as less steric hindrance, good solubility, excellent stacking, strong rigidity and fluorescence, biomass derived fractions, more and more research groups focus on the furan-based materials for using in OSCs in the past decade. To systematically understand the developments of furan-based photovoltaic materials, the relationships between the molecular structures, optoelectronic properties, and photovoltaic performances for the furan-based semiconductor materials including single furan, benzofuran, benzodifuran (BDF) (containing thienobenzofuran (TBF)), naphthodifurans (NDF), and polycyclic furan are summarized. Finally, the empirical regularities and perspectives of the development of this kind of new organic semiconductor materials are extracted.

Spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of thiophene-phenylene based Shiff-bases with alkoxy side groups, towards photovoltaic applications

The influence of presence and elongation of alkoxy side chains in the π-conjugated Schiff-bases has been considered on the basis of UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence spectra of model compounds and polymers solutions in chloroform and binary solvents of different polarity. The results of these investigations have been supported by electrochemical data. It has been demonstrated that introduction of electron donating methoxy side groups decreases the energy gap, however the elongation of alkyl chains only slightly affects the electronic structure of model compounds. In the case of polymers, such octyloxy side chains improves the solubility, enabling formation of longer polymer chains, with the enhanced effective π-conjugation length and narrower energy gap, however the intensity of emission band clearly decreased. Positive solvatochromism has been observed in both absorbance and photoluminescence spectra for all investigated compounds. As the concluding task, bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) photovoltaic (PV) structures, consisting of polyazomethines blended with the fullerene derivative, [6,6]-phenyl-C₆₁-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) have been prepared and tested in the context of potential application in solar cells. All investigated polymers have shown the photovoltaic effect, but the best power conversion efficiency and other PV parameters have been obtained for polyazomthine with octyloxy side chains.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons connected with Schiff base linkers: Experimental and theoretical photophysical characterization and electrochemical properties

A series of polyaromatic hydrocarbons with anthracene, phenanthrene and pyrene units connected with Schiff base junctions were synthesized via condensation of p-phenylenediamine and hydrazine with selected aldehydes. The effect of both hydrocarbon structures and presence of N-N- or phenyl- linked diimines on properties of the prepared azines and azomethines was analyzed. The obtained compounds were soluble in common organic solvents and melted in the range of 226-317°C. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were investigated by UV-vis, photoluminescence spectroscopies and cyclic voltammetry (CV), respectively. Moreover, a density functional theory (DFT) was applied for calculation of their electronic and geometric structures as well as absorption and emission spectra. Additionally, their electron acceptor activity was preliminary tested in photovoltaic experiment.
