Dendronized Porphyrins: Molecular Design and Synthesis

Abstract:

In this review, we report different methods and strategies to synthesize flexible and rigid dendronized porphyrins. We will focus on porphyrin dendrimers that have been reported in the last 10 years. Particularly, in our research group, we have designed and synthesized different series of dendronized porphyrins (free base and metallated) with pyrene units at the periphery and Fréchet-type dendritic arms. The Lindsey methodology has allowed the synthesis of meso-substituted porphyrins with various substitution patterns, such as symmetric, dissymmetric, or unsymmetric. Porphyrin dendrimers have been prepared by different synthetic methodologies; one of the most reported being the convergent method, where the dendrons are first prepared and further linked to a meso-substituted functionalized porphyrin unit, which will constitute the core of the dendrimer. Another interesting synthetic approach is the use of a reactive dendron bearing a terminal aldehyde functional group to form the final porphyrin core. In this way, a two-armed dendronized dissymmetric porphyrin core can be prepared from a dendritic precursor and a dipyrromethene derivative. This strategy is very convenient to prepare low-generation dendritic porphyrins. The divergent approach is another well-known methodology for porphyrin dendrimer synthesis, mostly used for the obtainment of high-generation dendrimers. Click chemistry reaction has been advantageous for the development of more complex porphyrin dendritic structures. This reaction presents important advantages, such as high yields and mild reaction conditions which permit the assembly of different multiporphyrin dendritic structures. In the constructs presented in this review, the emission of the porphyrin moiety has been observed, leading to potential applications in artificial photosynthesis, sensing, nanomedicine, and biological sciences.

Review of photoresponsive and glycoside dendrimers in biomaterials and sensors applications

Photoelectrochemically-assisted biofuel cell constructed by redox complex and g-C3N4 coated MWCNT bioanode

Herein, we report a membraneless glucose and air photoelectrochemical biofuel cell (PBFC) with a visible light assisted photobioanode. Flavin adenine dinucleotide dependent glucose dehydrogenase (FADGDH) was immobilized on the combined photobioanode for the visible light assisted glucose oxidation (GCE|MWCNT|g-C₃N₄|Ru-complex|FADGDH) with a quinone mediated electron transfer. Bilirubine oxidase (BOx) immobilized on MWCNT coated GCE (GCE|BOx) was used as the cathode with direct electron transfer (DET). An improvement of biocatalytic oxidation current was observed by 6.2% due in part to the light-driven electron-transfer. The large oxidation currents are probably owing to the good contacting of the immobilized enzymes with the electrode material and the utilization of light assisted process. Under the visible light, the photobioanode shows an anodic photocurrent of 1.95 μA cm² at attractively low potentials viz. -0.4 vs Ag/AgCl. The lower-lying conduction band of g-C₃N₄ as compared to Ru-complexes decreases the rate of hole and electron recombination and enhances the charge transportation. The bioanode shows maximum current density for glucose oxidation up to 6.78 μA cm^-2 at 0.2 V vs Ag/AgCl at pH:7. The performance of three promising Ru-complexes differing in chemical and redox properties were compared as electron mediators for FADGDH. Upon illumination, the PBFC delivered a maximum power density of 28.5 ± 0.10 μW cm^-2 at a cell voltage of +0.4 V with an open circuit voltage of 0.64 V.

Unusual Fluorescence Behavior of Pyrene-Amine Containing Dendrimers

A new class of pyrene-based dendrimers, characterized by the presence of a 1,4,7,10-Tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) unit as the core, was studied by SSF (steady-state fluorescence) and SPC (single-photon counting fluorescence). The photophysical behavior of these dendrimers was studied in THF, DMF and DMSO solution. The typical signals for pyrene-labeled molecules were recorded in each solvent, showing the representative fluorescence spectra: the corresponding emissions of monomer and excimer of the pyrene chromophore are observed. Unexpectedly, the typical quenching of tertiary amine on the pyrene emission was not observed in these dendrimers. Quenching studies were performed by adding up to 3 equivalents of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). To our knowledge, this is the first report of pyrene's unquenching behavior by a tertiary amine.

Synthesis and photophysical properties of novel pyrene–metalloporphyrin dendritic systems

Energy transfer studies were performed on a series of new pyrene–metalloporphyrin (Zn, Cu, Mg and Mn) dendritic constructs.

Energy Transfer in Dendritic Systems Having Pyrene Peripheral Groups as Donors and Different Acceptor Groups

In this feature article, a specific overview of resonance energy transfer (FRET) in dendritic molecules was performed. We focused mainly on constructs bearing peripheral pyrene groups as donor moieties using different acceptor groups, such as porphyrin, fullerene C60, ruthenium-bipyridine complexes, and cyclen-core. We have studied the effect of all the different donor-acceptor pairs in the energy transfer efficiency (FRET). In all cases, high FRET efficiency values were observed.

Design of Novel Pyrene-Bodipy Dyads: Synthesis, Characterization, Optical Properties, and FRET Studies

A new series of dendronized bodipys containing pyrene units was synthesized and characterized. Their optical and photophysical properties were determined by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. This series includes three different compounds. The first one has an anisole group linked to the bodipy unit, which was used as the reference compound. In the second, the bodipy core is linked to a zero generation dendron with one pyrene unit. The third compound contains a first generation Fréchet-type dendron bearing two pyrene units. In this work, the combination pyrene-bodipy was selected as the donor-acceptor pair for this fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) study. Doubtless, these two chromophores exhibit high quantum yields, high extinction coefficients, and both their excitation and emission wavelengths are located in the visible region. This report presents a FRET study of a novel series of pyrene-bodipy dendritic molecules bearing flexible spacers. We demonstrated via spectroscopic studies that FRET phenomena occur in these dyads.
