Synthesis and properties of photoluminescent phosphorus-doped triptycenes

A new class of phosphorus-doped triptycenes was designed and synthesized via a Diels-Alder reaction between alkynylphosphonates and anthracene, followed by oxidative cyclization. The packing interaction and molecular alignment in the single crystals revealed that the weak C-H⋯π (2.825 Å) interaction guides the self-assembly of phosphindole oxide iptycenes. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these photoluminescent phosphorus-doped iptycenes were characterized to gain a deeper understanding of their fluorescence tunability. The presence of functional groups on the phenyl ring of the P-doped fin and the chemical environment of the P atom both had an effect on the fluorescence emission.

Comprehensive Review on Synthesis, Properties, and Applications of Phosphorus (PIII, PIV, PV) Substituted Acenes with More Than Two Fused Benzene Rings

This comprehensive review, covering the years 1968-2022, is not only a retrospective investigation of a certain group of linearly fused aromatics, called acenes, but also a presentation of the current state of the knowledge on the synthesis, reactions, and applications of these compounds. Their characteristic feature is substitution of the aromatic system by one, two, or three organophosphorus groups, which determine their properties and applications. The (P^III, P^IV, P^V) phosphorus atom in organophosphorus groups is linked to the acene directly by a P-C_sp2 bond or indirectly through an oxygen atom by a P-O-C_sp2 bond.

Analysis of Solid-State Luminescence Emission Amplification at Substituted Anthracenes by Host-Guest Complex Formation

Small robust organic molecules showing solid-state luminescence are promising candidates for optoelectronic materials. Herein, we investigate a series of diphenylphosphanyl anthracenes [9-PPh2 -10-R-(C14 H8 )] and their sulfur oxidised analogues. The oxidation causes drastic changes in the molecular structure as the new orientation of the bulky (S)PPh2 substituent induces a strong butterfly bent structure of the anthracene core, which triggers a strong bathochromic shift resulting in a green solid-state fluorescence. As the emission properties change only slightly upon aggregation the origin of the emission is attributed to a typical monomer fluorescence. The host-guest complexes of [9-(S)PPh2 -10-Ethyl-(C14 H8 )] with four basic arenes reveal an emission enhancement up to five-times higher quantum yields compared to the pure host. Less interchromophoric interactions and a restriction of intramolecular motion within the host molecules due to fixation by weak C-H⋅⋅⋅π interactions with the co-crystallised arene are responsible for that emission enhancement.
