Abstract
Edible coatings on fruits and vegetables preserve postharvest quality by reducing water loss and lowering respiration, and metabolic activities. The primary objectives of this study were to develop composite coating formulations using natural waxes (carnauba and shellac wax), eugenol nanoemulsion, and Aloe vera gel, and assess the potential impacts of the coating formulations on the postharvest quality and shelf-life of the Kaji lemon. The results show that eugenol nanoemulsion and Aloe vera gel enhanced the physico-chemical, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the developed coating. Notably, the fruits coated with optimized nanocomposite of wax with eugenol and aloe vera gel inclusion (SW + CW/EuNE-20/AVG-2) showed the lowest weight loss (16.56%), while the coatings of wax with only aloe vera gel (SW + CW/AVG-2) exhibited the highest firmness (48 N), in contrast to the control fruit, which had 27.33% weight loss and 9.6 N firmness after 28 days of storage, respectively.

Abstract
Shellac is a natural resin featuring some attractive properties such as amphiphilicity, pH responsiveness, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. There has been increasing interest in employing shellac for controlled delivery of food bioactive compounds. This review outlines the recent advances in different types of shellac-based delivery systems, including nanoparticles, zein-shellac particles, hydrogels, nanofibers, and nanomicelles. The preparation method, formation mechanism, structure, and delivery performance are investigated. These systems could improve the stability and shelf-life of bioactive compounds, allow for targeted release at the small intestine or colon site, and increase bioavailability. The deficiencies and challenges of each of the systems are also discussed. The promising results in this review could guide future trends in more efficient shellac-based delivery platforms for functional food applications.

Abstract
In this work, shellac plasticized with oleic acid was solvent cast to prepare the flexible and water-resistant film for packaging applications. The films were prepared with varying amounts of oleic acid and studied in detail for appearance, surface morphology, thermal, chemical, barrier, mechanical, and robustness. The surface morphology confirmed the smooth surface of films up to SH-OA20 (100:20 w/w; shellac: oleic acid). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy confirmed that oleic acid reduced the hydrogen bonding of the shellac matrix to provide a plasticization effect. Also, the thermal analysis showed a reduction in the melting enthalpy. Moreover, the plasticized films had a better barrier to water vapor due to increased smoothness and reduction in brittleness. Adding oleic acid also increased the elongation at break up to 40 % without any changes in tensile strength. The flexibility of the films increased with the oleic acid content, making them resistant to burst, crumbling, bending, rolling, and stretching. Oleic acid also showed the retardation of aging and thermal aging of shellac. In the future, the long-term stability and migration of the films can be investigated.

Abstract
Casein forms diverse structures with functionalities tunable by complexation with surfactants, and shellac is an emerging surfactant. In the present work, molecular and mesoscopic structures of shellac and micellar casein and the underlying interactions after treatment with a pH-cycle were investigated. Dispersions with 0.5 % w/v shellac and various shellac:casein mass ratios were prepared at pH 12.0 to dissolve shellac and dissociate casein micelles, followed by neutralization to pH 7.0 to form complexes. Both covalent and non-covalent (hydrogen bonding, electrostatic, and hydrophobic) interactions contributed to the complex formation. The formed complexes had an average diameter of ~80 nm. The complexation of shellac and casein prevented the precipitation of protonated shellac during neutralization, and dispersions with casein:shellac mass ratios of 2:1 and above were absent of precipitates at pH 7.0. The formed nanocomplexes may have applications for preparing novel colloidal systems and loading lipophilic bioactive compounds.

Abstract
Curcumin was widely designed as nanoparticles to remove application restrictions. The occurrence of flocculation is a primary factor limiting the application of the curcumin nano-delivery system. To enhance the environmental stress resistance and functional properties of shellac-curcumin nanoparticles (S-Cur-NPs), γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) was utilized as an anti-flocculant. The encapsulation efficiency and loading capacity of S-Cur-NPs were also improved with γ-PGA incorporation. FTIR and XRD analysis confirmed the presence of amorphous characteristics in S-Cur-NPs and the combination of γ-PGA and shellac was driven by hydrogen bonding. The hydrophilic, thermodynamic, and surface potential of S-Cur-NPs was improved by the incorporation of γ-PGA. This contribution of γ-PGA on S-Cur-NPs effectively mitigated the flocculation occurrence during heating, storage, and in-vitro digestive treatment. Furthermore, it was revealed that γ-PGA enhanced the antibacterial and antioxidant properties of S-Cur-NPs and effectively protected the functional activity against heating, storage, and in-vitro digestion. Release studies conducted in simulated gastrointestinal fluids revealed that S-Cur-NPs have targeted intestinal release properties. Overall, the design of shellac with γ-PGA was a promising strategy to relieve the application stress of shellac and curcumin in the food industry.

Abstract
RATIONALE Vinegar is an everyday condiment made from fermented grains or fruits. It contains acetic acid which is the main organic material produced by fermentation. Vinegar suffers from the authenticity problem of exogenous adulteration due to the indistinguishability of low-cost chemical sources of synthetic acetic acid from acetic acid produced by fermentation. It is necessary to establish a simple and rapid measurement technique. METHODS Determination was according to the total acid content of vinegar diluted with acetone to a certain concentration. Online separation and determination of acetic acid δD in vinegar were carried out using gas chromatography-pyrolysis-isotope ratio mass spectrometry. RESULTS An HP-Plot/U column was selected for online separation of acetic acid and water with molecular sieve characteristics. At the same time, combined with the instrument blowback function to remove water. Dilute solvent acetone was treated with a molecular sieve to remove trace water. The reproducibility of this method is less than 3‰. The long-term stability is within a reasonable error range. The accuracy correlation coefficient is greater than 0.99. The δD values of acetic acid in vinegar (-264.5 ± 20.3‰) and from chemical sources (-30.5 ± 90.8‰) were obtained. CONCLUSIONS A rapid method was developed for identification of different sources of acetic acid. These different sources of acetic acid exhibited significant hydrogen isotope distribution characteristics. Additionally, it was observed that the carboxyl hydrogen of acetic acid exhibited facile exchange with water. In future investigations, we aim to mitigate this interference.

Abstract
In this study, multispectral analysis and molecular simulations were performed to investigate the interaction mechanism between phycocyanin (PC) and lysozyme (Lys). The interaction was examined using surface plasmon resonance (SPR), and the structural changes were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results suggest that the interaction between PC and Lys was primarily driven by electrostatic, hydrophobic, and hydrogen bonding forces. Molecular dynamics (MD) simulation revealed that Lys preferentially binds between the two subunits, alpha (α) and beta (β), of PC, with residues ASP-13, GLU-106, and GLU-115 on PC and ARG-119, ARG-107, and ARG-98 on Lys being the main contributors to the binding interaction. Additionally, the formation of the PC-Lys complex resulted in increased kinetic and improved thermal stability of PC, which have important implications for PC applications.

Abstract
In this study, the feasibility of shellac nanofibers as carrier system for colonic delivery of quercetin was evaluated. Firstly, the nanofibers without and with different amounts (2.5 %, 5.0 %, and 7.5 %) of quercetin were fabricated using pure shellac as a carrier by electrospinning. The morphology of nanofibers was bead-shape confirmed by SEM. FTIR, XRD, and DSC analysis showed that quercetin was encapsulated into shellac nanofibers, forming an amorphous complex. The molecular docking simulation indicated quercetin bound well to shellac through hydrogen bonding and van der Waals forces. These nanofibers had higher thermal stability than pure quercetin, and their surface wettability exhibited a pH-responsive behavior. The loading capacity of quercetin varied from 2.25 % to 6.84 % with the increased amount of quercetin, and it affected the stability of nanofibers in food simulants by measuring the release profiles of quercetin. The shellac nanofibers had high gastrointestinal stability, with a minimum quercetin release of 16.87 % in simulated digestive fluids, while the remaining quercetin was delivered to the colon and was released gradually. Moreover, the nanofibers exerted enhanced anticancer activity against HCT-116 cells by arresting cell cycle in G0/G1 phase and inducing cell apoptosis. Overall, shellac nanofibers are promising materials for colon-targeted delivery of active compounds.

Abstract
In this research, the carvacrol (CAR) loaded cellulose acetate phthalate (CAP) /shellac (SH) films were prepared via electrostatic repulsion strategy and casting method. The CAP/SH-CAR films demonstrated excellent tensile strength, while also exhibiting good UV light barrier and thermal stability. The results showed that the addition of CAR significantly improved the barrier of the CAP film to water vapor and oxygen permeability. When the addition amount of CAR was 0.9 % (w/w) with respect to CAP content, the CAP/SH-CAR films exhibited good antibacterial activity and effectively reduced the growth of S. aureus and E. coli by approximately 47.9 % and 50.9 %, respectively. The presence of SH improved the retention rate of CAR in CAP/SH-CAR films, with the retention rate ranging from 45.2 to 56.8 %. Finally, the CAP/SH-CAR films were applied to preserve the mackerel fillets, indicating that the rate of freshness deterioration had been delayed and showing a good freshness preservation effect. Therefore, the CAP/SH-CAR films have the potential to be used as food packaging materials.

Abstract
Shellac bio-coatings can enhance to improve quality and storage stability of fresh egg qualities with improved shell strength therefore minimizing the reduction the egg losses. Shellac bio-chitosan at 3 concentrations (1 %, 4 % and 8 % w/w) and shellac-1 % montmorillonite nanocomposites were applied as biocoatings to improve storage stability. Shellac-8 % (SH-8 %) coated eggs exhibited the lowest weight loss (1.28 %), significantly. The weight loss of shellac 1 % + MMT and 4 % shellac (SH-4 %) coated eggs was similar each other and had lower weight loss than 1 % shellac (SH-1 %). The Haugh Unit (HU) of eggs with SH-8 % (63.75) had the significantly the highest HU. The SH-4 % (60.24) and SH-1 %/MMT-1 % (58.04) were similar, and the control was the lowest one. The albumin pH of SH-8 % (9.15) coated exhibited a significantly lower than SH-4 % (9.21) and SH-1 %/MMT-1 % (9.24), while the control (9.39) was the highest value at end of storage. For the shellac coated group, total soluble values of albumen reached 12.87 (initial) to 16.331 (SH-1 %), 15.96 (SH-4 %), 15.60 (SH-8 %) and 16.15 (SH-%1-MMT-1 %) at the end of storage. The RWC and foam stability of SH-8 %, SH-4 % and SH-1 % MMT-1 % were similar and higher than 1 % SH and uncoated egg samples. The rheology behaviors were maintained with increasing shellac concentration through the storage. SH-8 % biocoatings were very most effective in filling and sealing the porous in the eggshell and protecting the storage stability and enhancing the strength of the eggshell. Shellac bio-coatings acted as a tiny layer for an effective protective barrier to gas permeability for enhancing the storage stability of the fresh eggs. Higher shellac concentrations (4 and 8 %) and 1 %-MMT were enhanced the storage stability and can be vital solutions for improving shell strength, so it decreases breakage rates.

Abstract
The present review discusses challenges, perspectives, and current needs of delivering bioactive compounds (BCs) using soft particulate matters (SPMs) for gut health. SPMs can entrap BCs for incorporation in foods, preserve their bioactivities during processing, storage, and gastrointestinal digestion, and deliver BCs to functioning sites in the colon. To enable these functions, physical, chemical, and biological properties of BCs are integrated in designing various types of SPMs to overcome environmental factors reducing the bioavailability and bioactivity of BCs. The design principles are applied using food grade molecules with the desired properties to produce SPMs by additionally considering the cost, sustainability, and scalability of manufacturing processes. Lastly, to make delivery systems practical, impacts of SPMs on food quality are to be evaluated case by case, and health benefits of functional foods incorporated with delivery systems are to be confirmed and must outweigh the cost of preparing SPMs.

Abstract
An economical and effective storage solution has been designed in this work for the storage of postharvest fruits and vegetables. Musa acuminata or banana has a shelf life of 5-6 days in open uncontrolled environment. This article reports a storage solution of M. acuminata in a controlled enclosure containing titanium oxide (TiO2 )-coated inner walls and irradiated with ultraviolet ray of band "C," an air filtration unit, 5% by volume potassium permanganate (KMnO4 ) solution in a clay pot, grow lights, and activated charcoal granules. The same fruit was kept in an uncontrolled environment too. The percentages of dark spots on banana (M. acuminata) upon storage in controlled and uncontrolled environments have been estimated using an image-processing algorithm. The prediction of dark spots was conducted using multi-linear and multivariate polynomial regression. Experimentation with optimum process parameters obtained with genetic algorithm resulted in a shelf life extension of 6 days as compared to its storage in an uncontrolled environment. The setup can be used in vegetable and fruit markets for the extension of shelf life of postharvest perishable items in a compact and cost-effective manner. The setup does not use any refrigeration process thereby decreasing energy requirement.

Abstract
Food-grade Pickering emulsions with plant proteins have attracted increasing interest in recent years. In this work, we report a type of phycocyanin (PC) electrostatic nanocomplex fabricated following a complexation between PC and lysozyme (Lys). The aim was to investigate toward investigating the performance of phycocyanin-Lysozyme (PC-Lys) nanocomplexes in stabilizing Pickering emulsions and protecting fucoxanthin (FX) from degradation. The properties of the PC-Lys nanocomplexes were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and three-phase contact angle. Using PC-Lys nanocomplexes as emulsifiers, Pickering emulsions were successfully prepared. Pickering emulsions stabilized by PC-Lys nanocomplexes generated a tight three-dimensional network structure, which increased the memory modulus and viscoelasticity of the emulsion. Furthermore, the produced Pickering emulsions considerably increased the chemical stability and bioavailability of FX. Overall, our study showed that PC-Lys nanocomplexes have the potential for use in Pickering emulsion construction with enhanced protective effects on loaded lipophilic ingredients.

Abstract
Over the past decades, increasing interests took place in the realm of drug delivery systems. Beyond treating intestinal diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease, colon targeting can provide possible applications for oral administration of proteins as well as vaccines due to the lower enzymatic activity in the distal part of GIT. To date, many strategies are employed to reach the colon. This article encompasses different biomaterials tested as film coatings and highlights appropriate formulations for colonic drug delivery. A comparison of different films was made to display the most interesting drug release profiles. These films contained ethylcellulose, as a thermoplastic polymer, blended with an aqueous shellac ammonium salt solution. Different blend ratios were selected as well for thin films as for coated mini-tablets, mainly varying as follows: (80:20); (75:25); (60:40). The impact of blend ratio and coating level was examined as well as the addition of natural polysaccharide "inulin" to target the colon. In vitro drug release was measured in 0.1 M HCl for 2 h followed by phosphate buffer saline pH 6.8 to simulate gastric and intestinal fluids, respectively. Coated mini-tablets were exposed to fresh fecal samples of humans in order to simulate roughly colonic content. Several formulations were able to fully protect theophylline as a model drug up to 8 h in the upper GIT, but allowing for prolonged release kinetics in the colon. These very interesting colonic release profiles were related to the amount of the natural polysaccharide added into the system.

Abstract
Developing safe and effective wound dressings that address the complexities of wound healing is an ongoing goal in biomaterials research. Inspired by the shield used to protect lac insects, we have designed and developed a type of bioactive shellac-based wound dressing in this paper. The dressing exhibited a high adhesion energy of 146.6 J·m-2 in porcine skin and showed a reversible binding due to its pH sensitivity. Meanwhile, a novel "shellac-like" compound, n-octacosanol gallate ester, has been synthesized and added to the dressing to improve its antibacterial and blood coagulation properties. The novel shellac-based dressing could be sprayed to form a sticky film within 70 s for rapid hemostasis and wound sealing, which could be conveniently applied to various wounds on extensible body parts. In addition, the shellac-based dressing can actively promote the healing of a full-thickness wound in the skin of mice. We also used molecular dynamics simulations to investigate the interactions between the shellac molecule and the phospholipid bilayer and attempted to show that the shellac molecule was beneficial for wound healing. This work provides a novel and practical bioinspired wound dressing with significant properties, facile preparation, and ease of use, which is an interesting alternative to its traditional counterparts.

Abstract
The present review explores the growing interest in the techniques employed for extracting natural products. It emphasizes the limitations of conventional extraction methods and introduces superior non-conventional alternatives, particularly ultrasound-assisted extraction. Characterization and quantification of bioactive constituents through chromatography coupled with spectroscopy are recommended, while the importance of method development and validation for biomarker quantification is underscored. At present, electrospun fibers provide a versatile platform for incorporating bioactive extracts and have extensive potential in diverse fields due to their unique structural and functional characteristics. Thus, the review also highlights the fabrication of electrospun fibers containing bioactive extracts. The preparation of biologically active extracts under optimal conditions, including the selection of safe solvents and cost-effective equipment, holds promising potential in the pharmaceutical, food, and cosmetic industries. Integration of experimental design into extraction procedures and formulation development is essential for the efficient production of health products. The review explores potential applications of encapsulating natural product extracts in electrospun fibers, such as wound healing, antibacterial activity, and antioxidant properties, while acknowledging the need for further exploration and optimization in this field. The findings discussed in this review are anticipated to serve as a valuable resource for the processing industry, enabling the utilization of affordable and environmentally friendly, natural, and raw materials.

Abstract
Colon-targeted drug delivery is gradually attracting attention because it can effectively treat colon diseases. Furthermore, electrospun fibers have great potential application value in the field of drug delivery because of their unique external shape and internal structure. In this study, a core layer of hydrophilic polyethylene oxide (PEO) and the anti-colon-cancer drug curcumin (CUR), a middle layer of ethanol, and a sheath layer of the natural pH-sensitive biomaterial shellac were used in a modified triaxial electrospinning process to prepare beads-on-the-string (BOTS) microfibers. A series of characterizations were carried out on the obtained fibers to verify the process-shape/structure-application relationship. The results of scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy indicated a BOTS shape and core-sheath structure. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the drug in the fibers was in an amorphous form. Infrared spectroscopy revealed the good compatibility of the components in the fibers. In vitro drug release revealed that the BOTS microfibers provide colon-targeted drug delivery and zero-order drug release. Compared to linear cylindrical microfibers, the obtained BOTS microfibers can prevent the leakage of drugs in simulated gastric fluid, and they provide zero-order release in simulated intestinal fluid because the beads in BOTS microfibers can act as drug reservoirs.

Abstract
The development of functional edible films is promising for the food industry, and improving the water barrier of edible films has been a research challenge in recent years. In this study, curcumin (Cur) was added to zein (Z) and shellac (S) to prepare an edible composite film with a strong water barrier and antioxidant properties. The addition of curcumin significantly reduced the water vapor permeability (WVP), water solubility (WS), and elongation at break (EB), and it clearly improved the tensile strength (TS), water contact angle (WCA), and optical properties of the composite film. The ZS-Cur films were characterized by SEM, FT-IR, XRD, DSC, and TGA; the results indicated that hydrogen bonds were formed among the curcumin, zein, and shellac, which changed the microstructure and improved the thermal stability of the film. A test of curcumin release behavior showed controlled release of curcumin from the film matrix. ZS-Cur films displayed remarkable pH responsiveness, strong antioxidant properties, and inhibitory effects on E. coli. Therefore, the insoluble active food packaging prepared in this study provides a new strategy for the development of functional edible films and also provides a possibility for the application of edible films to extend the shelf life of fresh food.

Abstract
Shellac is a natural amphiphilic substance, and its nanoparticles can be used to stabilize Pickering emulsions with droplets and bi-continuous structures. In this study, shellac nanoparticles (SNPs) were produced through the anti-solvent method, and these SNPs were used to produce a series of Pickering emulsions. Fourier transform infrared results showed that SNPs were generated through hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic effects. The contact angle of SNPs was 122.3°, indicating that hydrophobicity was their dominant characteristic. According to the results of confocal laser scanning microscopy, the Pickering emulsions stabilized by SNPs showed oil-in-water, bi-continuous structure, and water-in-oil characteristics, which were dependent on the oil-phase content. The resistance value of the emulsified part of these Pickering emulsion systems significantly increased at an oil-phase ratio of 80-90% (more than 105 MΩ), as compared with the 10-70% oil-phase content (around 1 MΩ). The viscosity of SNP-stabilized Pickering emulsions with bi-continuous structures was highest at 40% oil-phase content. The porous material prepared by using Pickering emulsions with bi-continuous structures as a template had an interconnected structure and was able to absorb both water and oil. This study indicated that these amphiphilic SNPs readily form bi-continuous structures and effectively stabilize Pickering emulsions with droplets. These SNPs are expected to have increased application in food and pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Delivery systems smaller than 50 nm are advantageous for cancer prevention. In this study, curcumin was dissolved in shellac micelles following co-dissolving at pH 13.0 and neutralization using glucono-delta-lactone. With 5% w/v shellac and 0.5-5 mg/mL curcumin, the loading capacity and encapsulation efficiency were up to 8.0 and 92.6%, respectively, and the nanocapsules had an average diameter of 20 nm. Differential scanning calorimetry, FTIR spectroscopy, and fluorescence spectroscopy results confirmed the encapsulation of curcumin in an amorphous state in shellac micelles. The neutral nanocapsule dispersions maintained the particle dimension and had less than 10% curcumin degradation during 4 week storage at 4 °C. Nanoencapsulating curcumin enhanced in vitro bioavailability and antiproliferation activity against colon cancer cells. After simulated digestions, ∼60% of the nanoencapsulated curcumin was not available for intestinal absorption, nanocapsules retained their structure, and nanoencapsulated curcumin remained active against colon cancer cells, indicating the potential delivery for colorectal cancer prevention.

Abstract
Shellac can nano-encapsulate curcumin by pH cycle. The starting point of the design is economy, simplicity, energy saving and safety. High loading capacity of curcumin is the unique advantage of shellac nanoparticles. The nanoparticles had good physicochemical stability and bioaccessibility. The redispersibility is proportional to the mass ratio of shellac-to-curcumin.
Curcumin is an active ingredient with multiple functions, however, its application is limited by its low stability, bioaccessibility, freeze-dried redispersibility, and solubilization. The work aims to improve the application of curcumin (Cur) by encapsulation. Shellac was the wall material inspired by its pH-dependent deprotonation and amphiphilic nature to form nanoparticles. The curcumin/shellac nanoparticles (S/Cur) exhibited a bright spot of high loading capacity (the maximum of higher than 70 %), while still having high encapsulation efficiency (the minimum of higher than 85 %). Transmission electron microscopy showed that S/Cur was a spherical structure. It exhibited good physical stability, including pH (4.0–8.0), ionic strength (NaCl, < 900 mM), thermo stability (80 ℃, 180 min), and storage stability (light and dark, 4 and 25 ℃, 20 days). Meanwhile, the chemical stability was increased by encapsulation. Furthermore, the bioaccessibility of Cur was improved to 75.95 %, which is attributed to the pH response of shellac. Additionally, S/Cur had freeze-dried redispersibility and solubilization, which is proportional to the mass ratio of shellac-to-Cur. The mechanism of S/Cur formation involved hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonds, and the nanoconfined Cur was amorphous.

Abstract
The consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables is restricted by the susceptibility of fresh produce to deterioration caused by postharvest physiological and metabolic activities. Developing efficient preservation strategies is thus among the most important scientific issues to be urgently addressed in the field of food science. The incorporation of active agents into a polymer matrix to prepare biodegradable active packaging is being increasingly explored to mitigate the postharvest spoilage of fruits and vegetables during storage. This paper reviews the composition of biodegradable polymers and the methods used to prepare biodegradable active packaging. In addition, the interactions between bioactive ingredients and biodegradable polymers that can lead to plasticizing or cross-linking effects are summarized. Furthermore, the applications of biodegradable active (i.e., antibacterial, antioxidant, ethylene removing, barrier, and modified atmosphere) packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are illustrated. These films may increase sensory acceptability, improve quality, and prolong the shelf life of postharvest products. Finally, the challenges and trends of biodegradable active packaging in the preservation of fruits and vegetables are discussed. This review aims to provide new ideas and insights for developing novel biodegradable active packaging materials and their practical application in the preservation of postharvest fruits and vegetables.

Abstract
In order to explore the applicability of the waterborne coating with self-repairing microcapsules based on the surface of wood boards and specify the optimal range of microcapsule content in the coating, three different kinds of shellac microcapsules (transparent shellac, purple shellac, and yellow shellac) were embedded in a waterborne acrylic coating at 0, 1.5 wt.%, 3.0 wt.%, 4.5 wt.%, 6.0 wt.%, and 7.5 wt.%. The Beli wood (Paraberlinia bifoliolata) boards were then covered with self-repairing coatings to investigate the self-repairing coating’s physical and chemical properties, aging resistance, and scratch repair abilities. The findings demonstrated that the chromatic difference and gloss of surface coatings on Beli wood boards were significantly influenced by the content of microcapsules. The optical characteristics and cold liquid resistance performance of the coating on Beli wood were enhanced when the microcapsule content was 3.0 wt.%. Additionally, the mechanical qualities of the coating with 3.0 wt.% transparent shellac microcapsules on Beli wood surface were better, with an H hardness, grade 2 adhesion, and 8 kg·cm of impact strength. The studies on scratch repairing and aging resistance indicated that microcapsules helped to slow down the coating’s damage and retard aging. After a microcrack appeared, the waterborne coating with microcapsules on Beli wood’s surface had the capacity to repair itself. After aging, the coating with 3.0 wt.% transparent shellac microcapsule on Beli wood boards had a better performance on the comprehensive properties, with a 28.9% light loss rate and a 6 kg·cm impact resistance. It also had a 25.0% repairing rate in scratch width after being damaged for 5 d. This study advances the development of self-healing waterborne coatings on the wood board with shellac microcapsules by examining the effects of shellac in various colors and shellac microcapsule content in waterborne coatings.

Abstract
Three kinds of melamine-formaldehyde (MF) microcapsules, containing transparent shellac, purple shellac, and yellow shellac as core curing agents, were synthesized via in situ polymerization, and then were embedded into the water-based acrylic resin coatings according to the concentrations of 0, 3.0%, 6.0%, 9.0%, 12.0%, and 15.0%, respectively, to obtain waterborne films with different microcapsule contents. The color of different shellacs was relevant to the color parameters of the self-healing waterborne film. The content of microcapsules was negatively correlated with the chromatic aberration of the surface of waterborne films. When the content of microcapsules was 0–6.0%, the chromatic aberration of waterborne films was relatively low. The content of microcapsules and the color of the different shellacs would affect the light transmittance of waterborne films. Among all samples, the light transmittance of the waterborne film containing 3.0% transparent shellac microcapsules was the highest. The microcapsules with different colors of shellac in waterborne films had different self-repairing effects. When the content of microcapsules did not exceed 6.0%, the tensile repair rate of the waterborne film containing yellow shellac encapsulated microcapsules was the highest, at 47.19%. The scratch experiment illustrated that the scratch width of the waterborne coating with yellow shellac microcapsules decreased most significantly, and the width change rate was 73.0% after 5 days. The coating containing the 3.0% yellow shellac microcapsule has the best comprehensive performance on optical and self-healing properties. Exploring the influence of shellac resin’s color and the microcapsules’ content on the waterborne film provides technical references for the application of shellac in waterborne coatings and contribute to the further development of the preparation process of self-healing coatings.

Abstract
Shellac is a physically refined form of lac resin, a natural biopolymer of animal origin obtained from tiny insects feeding on the sap of specific host trees. Shellac, in its basic form, is a polyester macromolecule composed of inter and intra esters of polyhydroxy aliphatic and sesquiterpene acids. It has been used in several industries for ages due to its exceptional properties such as film-forming, adhering, bonding, thermoplasticity, water-resistance and easy solubility in spirit and aqueous alkali solvents. From the beginning of the 21st century, due to increasing demand for natural products, a paradigm shift in the scope and applications of shellac has been witnessed, especially in green electronics, 3D printing, stealth technology, intelligent sensors, food and pharmaceutical industries. Shellac offers enormous potential for greener technologies as a natural and environmentally friendly material. This review provides an insight into the lac in detail, covering various forms of the lac, structure, properties, different applications of shellac and its future potential. This article would benefit the researchers involved in shellac research and others looking for natural and greener alternatives to synthetic polymers in various applications.

Abstract
Cultured meat (also referred to as cultivated meat or cell-based meat)—CM—is fabricated through the process of cellular agriculture (CA), which entails application of bioengineering, i.e., tissue engineering (TE) principles to the production of food. The main TE principles include usage of cells, grown in a controlled environment provided by bioreactors and cultivation media supplemented with growth factors and other needed nutrients and signaling molecules, and seeded onto the immobilization elements—microcarriers and scaffolds that provide the adhesion surfaces necessary for anchor-dependent cells and offer 3D organization for multiple cell types. Theoretically, many solutions from regenerative medicine and biomedical engineering can be applied in CM-TE, i.e., CA. However, in practice, there are a number of specificities regarding fabrication of a CM product that needs to fulfill not only the majority of functional criteria of muscle and fat TE, but also has to possess the sensory and nutritional qualities of a traditional food component, i.e., the meat it aims to replace. This is the reason that bioengineering aimed at CM production needs to be regarded as a specific scientific discipline of a multidisciplinary nature, integrating principles from biomedical engineering as well as from food manufacturing, design and development, i.e., food engineering. An important requirement is also the need to use as little as possible of animal-derived components in the whole CM bioprocess. In this review, we aim to present the current knowledge on different bioengineering aspects, pertinent to different current scientific disciplines but all relevant for CM engineering, relevant for muscle TE, including different cell sources, bioreactor types, media requirements, bioprocess monitoring and kinetics and their modifications for use in CA, all in view of their potential for efficient CM bioprocess scale-up. We believe such a review will offer a good overview of different bioengineering strategies for CM production and will be useful to a range of interested stakeholders, from students just entering the CA field to experienced researchers looking for the latest innovations in the field.

Abstract
Shellac can be used as an ideal delivery vehicle to deliver and protect the hydrophobic quercetagetin; the barriers such as low acid stability and encapsulation efficiency, however, heavily impede the application of shellac. The purpose of this work is to prepare quercetagetin-loaded shellac-quaternized chitosan nanoparticles (Que-Sh-QCS NPs) to overcome these challenges. Herein, quaternized chitosan, with 14% degree of substitution, was successfully synthesized via a quaternization modification. The concentration of quaternized chitosan over 0.05% can prevent the aggregation of shellac nanoparticles at the acid. The encapsulation efficiency of quercetagetin obviously increased from 37.92 to 65.48% with the concentration of QCS varying from 0 to 0.05%. Meanwhile, Que-Sh-QCS0.05 NPs possessed good storage stability, antioxidant property, biocompatibility, and controlled release. Therefore, quaternized chitosan can improve the encapsulation efficiency and acid and storage stabilities of nutraceutical-loaded shellac nanoparticles, providing a new insight into the application of shellac in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and food.

Abstract
Delivery systems play a crucial role in enhancing the activity of active substances; however, they require complex processing techniques and raw material design to achieve the desired properties. In this regard, raw materials that can be easily processed for different delivery systems are garnering attention. Among these raw materials, shellac, which is the only pharmaceutically used resin of animal origin, has been widely used in the development of various delivery systems owing to its pH responsiveness, biocompatibility, and degradability. Notably, shellac performs better on encapsulating hydrophobic active substances than other natural polymers, such as polysaccharides and proteins. In addition, specially designed shellac-based delivery systems can also be used for the codelivery of hydrophilic and hydrophobic active substances. Shellac is most widely used for oral administration, as shellac-based delivery systems can form a compact structure through hydrophobic interaction, protecting transported active substances from the harsh environment of the stomach to achieve targeted delivery in the small intestine or colon. In this review, the advantages of shellac in delivery systems are discussed in detail. Multiscale shellac-based delivery systems from the macroscale to nanoscale are comprehensively introduced, including matrix tablets, films, enteric coatings, hydrogels, microcapsules, microparticles (beads/spheres), nanoparticles, and nanofibers. Furthermore, the hotspots, deficiencies, and future perspectives of shellac-based delivery system development are also analyzed. We hoped this review will increase the understanding of shellac-based delivery systems and inspire their further development.

Abstract
Emerging technologies such as smart packaging are shifting the requirements on electronic components, notably regarding service life, which counts in days instead of years. As a result, standard materials are often not adapted due to economic, environmental or manufacturing considerations. For instance, the use of metal conductive tracks in disposable electronics is a waste of valuable resources and their accumulation in landfills is an environmental concern. In this work, we report a conductive ink made of carbon particles dispersed in a solution of shellac. This natural and water-insoluble resin works as a binder, favourably replacing petroleum-derived polymers. The carbon particles provide electrical conductivity and act as a rheology modifier, creating a printable shear-thinning gel. The ink's conductivity and sheet resistance are 1000 S m-1 and 15 Ω sq-1, respectively, and remain stable towards moisture. We show that the ink is compatible with several industry-relevant patterning methods such as screen-printing and robocasting, and demonstrate a minimum feature size of 200 μm. As a proof-of-concept, a resistor and a capacitor are printed and used as deformation and proximity sensors, respectively.

Abstract
Particulate matter (PM), composed of tiny solids and liquid droplets in polluted air, poses a serious threat to human health. Traditional air filters usually cause secondary pollution due to their poor degradability. Here, shellac, as an environmentally friendly natural organic material, was successfully applied to fabricate biodegradable air filters. Since pure shellac fiber shows poor mechanical properties and bad light transmittance, we then introduced a small amount of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) in the shellac solution to prepare highly efficient air filter membranes by the electrospinning method. The prepared PVP-assisted shellac nanofiber membrane (P-Shellac FME) demonstrated improved filtration efficiencies as high as 95% and 98% for PM2.5 and PM10, respectively. The P-Shellac FME also showed good stability, with filtration efficiencies still above 90% and 95% for PM2.5 and PM10 even after six hours of air filtering under high PM concentrations. The pressure drop going through the filter was only 101 Pa, which is also comparable to the value of 76 Pa obtained using commercial polypropylene nanofibers (PP nanofibers, peeled off from the surgical mask), indicating good air permeability of P-Shellac FME. Additionally, P-Shellac FME also showed the advantages of translucence, biodegradability, improved mechanical properties, and low cost. We believe that the P-Shellac FME will make a significant contribution in the application of air filtration.

Abstract
To explore the implication of the coating process on the comprehensive properties of water-based coating containing shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder on the Tilia cordata surface, the optical properties, mechanical properties, liquid resistance, aging resistance, chemical composition, and microstructure of the coating were analyzed comprehensively. After the best coating process was determined, compared with the coating without microcapsules, the self-repairing performance of the water-based coating containing shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder was explored via aging resistance test and scratch test. The results showed that the best comprehensive performance of the coating was obtained by three times primer, two times finish, and 6.0% shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder added in the primer. The coating with shellac microcapsules had significant stability, aging resistance, and self-healing performance, which can repair cracks in a certain period of time and inhibit the formation of cracks. At the core wall ratio of 0.75, the shellac which plays a role of the repair agent as the core material can effectively fill the microcracks in the coating to repair by flowing from the broken microcapsule because it can be physically cured at room temperature. The modification of waterborne coatings with shellac microcapsules coated with melamine/rice husk powder contributes the improved self-repairing properties of surface coatings containing heterogeneous natural polymer composites.
