Unveiling the Evidence for the Use of Pulses in Managing Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Scoping Review

Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a pressing global healthcare challenge. Innovative strategies that integrate superior medical and nutritional practices are essential for holistic care. As such, pulse consumption is encouraged for its potential benefit in reducing hypercholesterolaemia, dyslipidaemia, and triglyceride levels, as well as enhancing glycaemic control. This scoping review aims to assess the depth of evidence supporting the recommendation for pulse consumption in T2DM management and to identify gaps in the existing literature. We conducted a comprehensive search across the databases MEDLINE, Global Health, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library (up to July 2023). We included population-based studies of any design, and excluded review-style articles. Articles published in languages other than English were also excluded. From the 2449 studies initially identified, 28 met our inclusion criteria. Acute postprandial trials demonstrated improved glucose responses and enhanced insulin responses to pulse-based intervention. Meanwhile, long-term trials reported meaningful improvements in T2DM indicators such as haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c), fasting glucose, fasting insulin, C-peptide, and markers of insulin resistance like homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). Integrating more pulses into the diets of diabetic individuals might offer an efficient and cost-effective strategy in the global initiative to combat T2DM.

Germinated chickpea protein ficin hydrolysate and its peptides inhibited glucose uptake and affected the bitter receptor signaling pathway in vitro

The objective of this study was to evaluate germinated chickpea protein hydrolysate (GCPH) in vitro for its effect on markers of type 2 diabetes (T2D) and bitter taste receptor expression in intestinal epithelial cells. Protein hydrolysate was obtained using ficin, and the resulting peptides were sequenced using LC-ESI-MS/MS. Caco-2 cells were used to determine glucose uptake and extra-oral bitter receptor activation. Three peptides, VVFW, GEAGR, and FDLPAL, were identified in legumin. FDLPAL was the most potent peptide in molecular docking studies with a DPP-IV energy of affinity of -9.8 kcal mol-1. GCPH significantly inhibited DPP-IV production by Caco-2 cells (IC50 = 2.1 mM). Glucose uptake was inhibited in a dose-dependent manner (IC25 = 2.0 mM). A negative correlation was found between glucose uptake and PLCβ2 expression in Caco-2 cells (R value, -0.62). Thus, GCPH has the potential to be commercialized as a functional ingredient.

Impact of cavitation on the structure and functional quality of extracted protein from food sources - An overview

Increasing protein demands directly require additional resources to those presently and recurrently available. Emerging green technologies have witnessed an escalating interest in "Cavitation Processing" (CP) to ensure a non-invasive, non-ionizing and non-polluting extraction. The main intent of this review is to present an integrated summary of cavitation extraction methods specifically applied to food protein sources. Along with a comparative assessment carried out for each type of cavitation model, protein extraction yield and implications on the extracted protein's structural and functional properties. The basic principle of cavitation is due to the pressure shift in the liquid flow within milliseconds. Hence, cavitation emerges similar to boiling; however, unlike boiling (temperature change), cavitation occurs due to pressure change. Characterization and classification of sample type is also a prime candidate when considering the applications of cavitation models in food processing. Generally, acoustic and hydrodynamic cavitation is applied in food applications including extraction, brewing, microbial cell disruption, dairy processing, emulsification, fermentation, waste processing, crystallisation, mass transfer and production of bioactive peptides. Micro structural studies indicate that shear stress causes disintegration of hydrogen bonds and Van der Waals interactions result in the unfolding of the protein's secondary and/or tertiary structures. A change in the structure is not targeted but rather holistic and affects the physicochemical, functional, and nutritional properties. Cavitation assisted extraction of protein is typically studied at a laboratory scale. This highlights limitations against the application at an industrial scale to obtain potential commercial gains.

In Vitro Assessment Methods for Antidiabetic Peptides from Legumes: A Review

Almost 65% of the human protein supply in the world originates from plants, with legumes being one of the highest contributors, comprising between 20 and 40% of the protein supply. Bioactive peptides from various food sources including legumes have been reported to show efficacy in modulating starch digestion and glucose absorption. This paper will provide a comprehensive review on recent in vitro studies that have been performed on leguminous antidiabetic peptides, focusing on the α-amylase inhibitor, α-glucosidase inhibitor, and dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibitor. Variations in legume cultivars and methods affect the release of peptides. Different methods have been used, such as in sample preparation, including fermentation (t, T), germination (t), and pre-cooking; in protein extraction, alkaline extraction, isoelectric precipitation, phosphate buffer extraction, and water extraction; in protein hydrolysis enzyme types and combination, enzyme substrate ratio, pH, and time; and in enzyme inhibitory assays, positive control type and concentration, inhibitor or peptide concentration, and the unit of inhibitory activity. The categorization of the relative scale of inhibitory activities among legume samples becomes difficult because of these method differences. Peptide sequences in samples were identified by means of HPLC/MS. Software and online tools were used in bioactivity prediction and computational modelling. The identification of the types and locations of chemical interactions between the inhibitor peptides and enzymes and the type of enzyme inhibition were achieved through computational modelling and enzyme kinetic studies.

Lupinus albus γ-Conglutin: New Findings about Its Action at the Intestinal Barrier and a Critical Analysis of the State of the Art on Its Postprandial Glycaemic Regulating Activity

γ-Conglutin (γ-C) is the glycoprotein from the edible seed L. albus, studied for long time for its postprandial glycaemic regulating action. It still lacks clear information on what could happen at the meeting point between the protein and the organism: the intestinal barrier. We compared an in vitro system involving Caco-2 and IPEC-J2 cells with an ex vivo system using pig ileum and jejunum segments to study γ-C transport from the apical to the basolateral compartment, and its effects on the D-glucose uptake and glucose transporters protein expression. Finally, we studied its potential in modulating glucose metabolism by assessing the possible inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase. RP-HPLC analyses showed that γ-C may be transported to the basolateral side in the in vitro system but not in the pig intestines. γ-C was also able to promote a decrease in glucose uptake in both cells and jejunum independently from the expression of the SGLT1 and GLUT2 transporters.

Alleviating Effects of Black Soybean Peptide on Oxidative Stress Injury Induced by Lead in PC12 Cells via Keap1/Nrf2/TXNIP Signaling Pathway

Many researchers have found that Pb exposure can cause oxidative stress damage to the body’s tissue. Black soybean peptide (BSP) has a variety of physiological functions, especially in terms of oxidative stress. Nevertheless, the mitigation function of BSPs on Pb-induced oxidative stress damage in PC12 cells has not been clearly defined. In this study, cell viability was detected by CCK8. Oxidative stress indicators, such as ROS, GSH/GSSG, MDA, SOD, CAT, GPx, and GR, were tested with biochemical kit. Protein expression of Keap1, Nrf2, and TXNIP was measured by Western blot. Compared with the control group, Pb reduced the cell viability of PC12 cells. However, BSP treatment significantly increased the viability of PC12 cells induced by lead exposure (p < 0.05). Lead can enrich the contents of MDA and ROS, but decrease the amount of CAT, SOD, GR, GPx, and GSH/GSSG in PC12 cells, while BSP can alleviate it (p < 0.05). Lead can enhance the expression of Keap1 and TXNIP proteins, but reduce Nrf2 expression. In contrast, BSPs reversed this phenomenon (p < 0.05). BSPs can alleviate oxidative stress injury induced by lead in PC12 cells through the Keap1/Nrf2/TXNIP signaling pathway.

Targeting Glucose Transport Proteins for Diabetes Management: Regulatory Roles of Food-Derived Compounds

With the rapid rise in prevalence, diabetes mellitus is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. Impaired cellular glucose transport is a major contributor to diabetes progression and, thus, an important target for treatment. Functional foods are a rich source of antidiabetic agents. These compounds target multiple physiological contributors to diabetes with lower risk for side effects. This perspective highlights recent advances in food-derived compounds that regulate the gene expression or activity of glucose transport proteins (SGLT1, SGLT2, GLUT1, GLUT2, and GLUT4) and provides insights for future research on targeting the transporters as a promising antidiabetic mechanism of nutraceutical compounds.

A risk model of gene signatures for predicting platinum response and survival in ovarian cancer

Background

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the deadliest tumor in the female reproductive tract. And increased resistance to platinum-based chemotherapy represents the major obstacle in the treatment of OC currently. Robust and accurate gene expression models are crucial tools in distinguishing platinum therapy response and evaluating the prognosis of OC patients.

Methods

In this study, 230 samples from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) OV dataset were subjected to mRNA expression profiling, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and copy number variation (CNV) analysis comprehensively to screen out the differentially expressed genes (DEGs). An SVM classifier and a prognostic model were constructed using the Random Forest algorithm and LASSO Cox regression model respectively via R. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database was applied as the validation set.

Results

Forty-eight differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were figured out through integrated analysis of gene expression, single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP), and copy number variation (CNV) data. A 10-gene classifier was constructed which could discriminate platinum-sensitive samples precisely with an AUC of 0.971 in the training set and of 0.926 in the GEO dataset (GSE638855). In addition, 8 optimal genes were further selected to construct the prognostic risk model whose predictions were consistent with the actual survival outcomes in the training cohort (p = 9.613e-05) and validated in GSE638855 (p = 0.04862). PNLDC1, SLC5A1, and SYNM were then identified as hub genes that were associated with both platinum response status and prognosis, which was further validated by the Fudan University Shanghai cancer center (FUSCC) cohort.

Conclusion

These findings reveal a specific risk model that could serve as effective biomarkers to identify patients’ platinum response status and predict survival outcomes for OC patients. PNLDC1, SLC5A1, and SYNM are the hub genes that may serve as potential biomarkers in OC treatment.

Sensory and Biological Potential of Encapsulated Common Bean Protein Hydrolysates Incorporated in a Greek-Style Yogurt Matrix

The work aimed to develop a gel as a protective barrier of common bean protein hydrolysates to be incorporated into a Greek-style yogurt and evaluate the sensory perception and biological potential. The gel was formed by complex coacervation and induced heat at a pH 3.5 and 3:1 biopolymer ratio (whey protein and gum arabic). The gel presented a 39.33% yield, low syneresis (0.37%), and a gel strength of 100 gf. The rheological properties showed an elastic behavior (G′ > G″). The gel with the most stable characteristics favored the incorporation of 2.3 g of hydrolysates to be added into the Greek-style yogurt. Nutritionally, the Greek-style yogurt with the encapsulated hydrolysates presented 9.96% protein, 2.27% fat, and 1.76% carbohydrate. Syneresis (4.64%), titratable acidity (1.39%), and viscoelastic behavior presented similar characteristics to the Greek-style control yogurt. The bitterness and astringency in yogurt with encapsulated hydrolysates decreased 44% and 52%, respectively, compared to the yogurt control with the unencapsulated hydrolysates. The Greek-style yogurt with the encapsulated hydrolysates showed the ability to inhibit enzymes related to carbohydrate metabolism (α-amylase (92.47%) and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (75.24%) after simulated gastrointestinal digestion). The use of gels could be an alternative to transporting, delivering, and masking off-flavors of common bean protein hydrolysates in food matrices to decrease glucose absorption for type 2 diabetes patients.

An Exploratory Study of the Role of Dietary Proteins in the Regulation of Intestinal Glucose Absorption

Several studies have demonstrated that high protein diets improve glucose homeostasis. Nevertheless, the mechanisms underlying this effect remain elusive. This exploratory study aims to screen and compare the acute effects of dietary proteins from different sources on intestinal glucose absorption. Six dietary proteins from various sources were thus selected and digested thanks to the INFOGEST static gastrointestinal digestion protocol. The digested proteins were able to decrease intestinal glucose absorption in vitro and ex vivo. Moreover, acute ingestion of casein and fish gelatin led to improved glucose tolerance in Wistar rats without significant effect on insulin secretion. In parallel, GLUT2 mRNA expression in enterocytes was decreased following short-term incubation with some of the digested proteins. These results strengthen the evidence that digested protein-derived peptides and amino acids are key regulators of glucose homeostasis and highlight their role in intestinal glucose absorption.

Production, Purification, and Potential Health Applications of Edible Seeds' Bioactive Peptides: A Concise Review

Edible seeds play a significant role in contributing essential nutritional needs and impart several health benefits to improve the quality of human life. Previous literature evidence has confirmed that edible seed proteins, their enzymatic hydrolysates, and bioactive peptides (BAPs) have proven and potential attributes to ameliorate numerous chronic disorders through the modulation of activities of several molecular markers. Edible seed-derived proteins and peptides have gained much interest from researchers worldwide as ingredients to formulate therapeutic functional foods and nutraceuticals. In this review, four main methods are discussed (enzymatic hydrolysis, gastrointestinal digestion, fermentation, and genetic engineering) that are used for the production of BAPs, including their purification and characterization. This article’s main aim is to provide current knowledge regarding several health-promoting properties of edible seed BAPs in terms of antihypertensive, anti-cancer, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic activities.

Nutritional composition and proteomic analysis of soft-shelled turtle (Pelodiscus sinensis) egg and identification of oligopeptides with alpha-glucosidase inhibitory activity

This study aimed to explore nutritional compositions and proteomics of soft-shelled turtle (SST) egg, as well as identify potential antidiabetic oligopeptides with α-glucosidase inhibitory property. Results revealed that SST egg is a promising source of highly nutritious proteins and minerals (54.64% and 5.81% of dry matter, respectively). Further proteomic analysis showed SST egg proteins contained at least 9 protein families, such as transferrin/iron binding protein and immunoregulation-related protein. Hydrolysis by different enzymes, especially papain, remarkably increased α-glucosidase inhibitory activity and scavenging activity for ABTS, DPPH, hydroxyl and oxygen radicals of SST egg proteins. Peptides from papain hydrolysate were fractionated using ultrafiltration followed by reverse phase chromatography, and 16 peptides were identified in the most active fraction by LC-QTOF-MS/MS. Molecular docking revealed that 14 of these peptides could easily dock into the substrate-binding pocket and/or inhibitor binding sites of α-glucosidase with the docking score below -150 kcal/mol, indicating their potential α-glucosidase inhibitory properties. The five most abundant oligopeptides with potent interaction with α-glucosidase were further synthesized, and oligopeptides HNKPEVEVR, ARDASVLK and SGTLLHK strongly inhibited the activity of α-glucosidase (IC₅₀ of 56, 195 and 289 µmol/L, respectively). Therefore, oligopeptides from enzymatic hydrolysate of SST egg protein exhibit potential antidiabetic activity, making it a promising functional food ingredient.

The landscape of tumors-infiltrate immune cells in papillary thyroid carcinoma and its prognostic value

Introduction

Thyroid cancer is a very common malignant tumor in the endocrine system, while the incidence of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) throughout the world also shows a trend of increase year by year. In this study, we constructed two models: ICIscore and Riskscore. Combined with these two models, we can make more accurate and reasonable inferences about the prognosis of PTC patients.

Methods

We selected 481 PTC samples from TCGA and 147 PTC samples from GEO (49 samples in GSE33630, 65 samples in GSE35570 and 33 samples in GSE60542). We performed consistent clustering for them and divided them into three subgroups and screened differentially expressed genes from these three subgroups. Then we divided the differential genes into three subtypes. We also distinguished the up-regulated and down-regulated genes and calculated ICIscore for each PTC sample. ICIscore consists of two parts: (1) the PCAu was calculated from up-regulated genes. (2) the PCAd was calculated from down-regulated genes. The PCAu and PCAd of each sample were the first principal component of the relevant gene. What’s more, we divided the patients into two groups and constructed mRNA prognostic signatures. Additionally we also verified the independent prognostic value of the signature.

Results

Though ICIscore, we were able to observe the relationship between immune infiltration and prognosis. The result suggests that the activation of the immune system may have both positive and negative consequences. Though Riskscore, we could make more accurate predictions about the prognosis of patients with PTC. Meanwhile, we also generated and validated the ICIscore group and Riskscore group respectively.

Conclusion

All the research results show that by combining the two models constructed, ICIscore and Riskscore, we can make a more accurate and reasonable inference about the prognosis of patients with clinical PTC patients. This suggests that we can provide more effective and reasonable treatment plan for clinical PTC patients.

Proteins and peptides from vegetable food sources as therapeutic adjuvants for the type 2 diabetes mellitus

Proteins and peptides are fundamental components of the cereals, pseudocereals, and legumes, giving them numerous health-beneficial properties. Previous studies have demonstrated that these molecules exerted effects on current therapeutic targets related to type 2 diabetes mellitus, such as incretin hormones (responsible for appetite suppression), dipeptidyl peptidase IV (an enzyme involved in the inactivation and degradation of the incretin hormones), and glucose transporters (molecules that transport glucose in or out of cells). Therefore, this review presents the current biological activity of protein derivatives and peptides isolated from cereals, pseudocereals, and legumes on these therapeutic markers, highlighting their potential as a possible pharmacological treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Autoclaving and extrusion improve the functional properties and chemical composition of black bean carbohydrate extracts

Common beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) are rich in starch with a high content of amylose, which is associated with the production of retrograded and pregelatinized starch through thermal treatments. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the composition, morphology, thermal, functional, and physicochemical properties of carbohydrate extracts (CE) obtained from autoclaved (100 and 121 °C) and extruded (90, 105, and 120 °C) black beans. After evaluation of the functional properties, the CE from autoclaved beans at 100 °C for 30 min and 121 °C for 15 min 2×, and extruded beans at 120 °C and 10 rpm, were selected to continue the remaining analysis. Autoclaving treatments at 100 °C for 30 min and 121 °C for 15 min 2× showed a reduction of resistant starch by 14.4% and 26.6%, respectively, compared to dehulled raw bean CE. Meanwhile, extrusion showed a reduction in resistant starch of 54.2%. Autoclaving and extrusion treatments also decreased the dietary fiber content. Extrusion reduced almost entirely the content of α-galactooligosaccharides, in comparison to dehulled raw bean CE. The results showed differences in color and granule morphology. The onset, peak, and conclusion temperatures, transition temperature range, and enthalpy of autoclaved and extruded bean CE were lower than dehulled raw bean CE. The CE from autoclaved and extruded beans contain retrograded and pregelatinized starch, which could be incorporated in food products as a thickening agent for puddings, sauces, creams, or dairy products. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Thermally treated black bean carbohydrate extracts are rich in starch, fiber, and protein. Because these extracts are already cooked, they can be added to products that do not require a thermal process such as puddings, sauces, creams, or dairy products, acting as a thickening agent.

Characteristics of Biopeptides Released In Silico from Collagens Using Quantitative Parameters

The potential of collagens to release biopeptides was evaluated using the BIOPEP-UWM-implemented quantitative criteria including the frequency of the release of fragments with a given activity by selected enzyme(s) (AE), relative frequency of release of fragments with a given activity by selected enzyme(s) (W), and the theoretical degree of hydrolysis (DHt). Cow, pig, sheep, chicken, duck, horse, salmon, rainbow trout, goat, rabbit, and turkey collagens were theoretically hydrolyzed using: stem bromelain, ficin, papain, pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, pepsin+trypsin, and pepsin+trypsin+chymotrypsin. Peptides released from the collagens having comparable AE and W were estimated for their likelihood to be bioactive using PeptideRanker Score. The collagens tested were the best sources of angiotensin I-converting enzyme (ACE) and dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV) inhibitors. AE and W values revealed that pepsin and/or trypsin were effective producers of such peptides from the majority of the collagens examined. Then, the SwissTargetPrediction program was used to estimate the possible interactions of such peptides with enzymes and proteins, whereas ADMETlab was applied to evaluate their safety and drug-likeness properties. Target prediction revealed that the collagen-derived peptides might interact with several human proteins, especially proteinases, but with relatively low probability. In turn, their bioactivity may be limited by their short half-life in the body.

Transport, metabolism and remedial potential of functional food extracts (FFEs) in Caco-2 cells monolayer: A review

Caco-2, a human intestinal carcinoma cell line, has been used to test the absorption and transport mechanism of functional foods and drugs across the intestinal epithelium in order to study their antioxidant, anticancer and anti-inflammatory activities. Caco-2 cells represent the morphological and functional characteristics of small intestinal cells and capable of expressing brush borders, tight junctions, intestinal efflux and uptake transporters which regulate permeation of drugs and functional food extracts from intestinal lumen to systemic circulation. The integrity of the Caco-2 monolayer is controlled by establishing the TEER between 200 and 1000 O per cm². FFEs affect intestinal permeability by adjusting the tight junction proteins between the cells in order to maintain the epithelial barrier function. Because of the side effects of medicines, there is an increased interest in functional food extracts (FFEs) as drug substitutes. Functional foods undergo intricate transport processes and biotransformation after oral administration. Metabolism and transport studies of FFEs in Caco-2 cells are very important for determining their bioavailability. Functional foods and their constituents produce anti-proliferative and anti-cancer effects through apoptosis, cell cycle arrest and inhibition of various signal transduction pathways across Caco-2 cell lines. The current review has summarized the anti-inflammation, anticancer, antioxidant and cholesterol lowering potential of FFEs using Caco-2 cells through reducing local inflammatory signals, production of ROS and lipid accumulation. The transport, bioavailability, metabolism, mechanisms of actions, cellular pathways adopted by FFEs across Caco-2 cell lines are predominantly affected by their molecular weight, structures and physicochemical properties. These studies are beneficial for investigating the different mechanisms of action of FFEs in the human body.

Bioactive proteins and phytochemicals from legumes: Mechanisms of action preventing obesity and type-2 diabetes

The Fabaceae family of plants include a variety of seeds with multiple shapes, sizes, and colors; with a great diversity of bioactive compounds found in legume seeds. Legumes are an excellent source of protein, peptides and phytochemicals which are present in significant amounts. These bioactive compounds have been reported to reduce the risk of developing non-communicable diseases (NCD), such as obesity and type-2 diabetes. In this narrative review, we discuss the biological potential of bioactive compounds found in legumes and the health benefits associated with their consumption as an alternative approach in the management of NCD. Current extraction methods, characteristics of the bioactive compounds, and different in vitro and in vivo studies evaluating the bioactivity of legume bioactives are reviewed and discussed.

BIOPEP-UWM Database of Bioactive Peptides: Current Opportunities

The BIOPEP-UWM™ database of bioactive peptides (formerly BIOPEP) has recently become a popular tool in the research on bioactive peptides, especially on these derived from foods and being constituents of diets that prevent development of chronic diseases. The database is continuously updated and modified. The addition of new peptides and the introduction of new information about the existing ones (e.g., chemical codes and references to other databases) is in progress. New opportunities include the possibility of annotating peptides containing D-enantiomers of amino acids, batch processing option, converting amino acid sequences into SMILES code, new quantitative parameters characterizing the presence of bioactive fragments in protein sequences, and finding proteinases that release particular peptides.

SLC5A1 promotes growth and proliferation of pancreatic carcinoma via glucose-dependent AMPK/mTOR signaling

Background: Accumulating studies have reported that aberrant expression of SLC5A1 is a negative prognostic factor to various cancer patients.

Purpose: Pancreatic cancer tissue has also shown to harbor higher expression of SLC5A1, however how SLC5A1 mediates pancreatic cancer cells growth remains unclear.

Methods: In this study, we examined the mRNA and protein expressions of SLC5A1 in human pancreatic tissue and various cell lines. The in vitro and in vivo roles of SLC5A1 in pancreatic cancer were investigated through stably transfected pancreatic cells with shRNA plasmid targeting SLC5A1.

Results: Our results observed SLC5A1 was over-expressed in human pancreatic cancer tissues as well as most pancreatic cancer cell lines. Both in vitro and in vivo inhibition of SLC5A1 retarded pancreatic cancer cell growth and progression. The SLC5A1 knockdown mediated growth suppression is mainly regulated by reduced cellular glucose uptake by pancreatic cancer cells. Our further mechanistic observation showed that inhibition of SLC5A1 induced AMPK-dependent mTOR suppression and pharmacological inhibition of AMPK rescued the effect of SLC5A1 blockade. Further protein-protein interaction analysis showed association of SLC5A1 with EGFR and knockdown of EGFR also showed decreased cellular survival and glucose uptake by pancreatic cancer cells.

Conclusion: Our findings postulated SLC5A1/EGFR as the potential therapeutic target of pancreatic cancer patients.

Recently isolated antidiabetic hydrolysates and peptides from multiple food sources: a review

Diabetes, a metabolic syndrome of global importance has been on a progressive rise in recent years. Several pharmacological approaches have been made, which have proved effective, but with underlying side effects. Bioactive hydrolysates (BHs) and peptides (BPs) from food sources, however, have shown the relative advantage of imparting less adverse effects. Furthermore, BHs and BPs from food have been discovered to impart their antidiabetic potentials through one or more mechanisms such as inhibition of digestive enzymes, inhibition of the antigenic enzyme - Dipeptyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV), decrease in blood glucose levels and increase in insulin uptake. Several plants and animal sources have been used as protein sources for the isolation of antidiabetic hydrolysates and peptides through different mechanisms and analytical techniques. This review integrates recent research information about several popular and unconventional food sources of BHs and BPs, their isolation techniques, antidiabetic effects and protein profiles. In addition, the fractionation technique(s) employed in each study and inhibition potentials of BHs and BPs are reviewed. This article is intended to supplement accessible scholarly literature and intellectual awareness on the subject of food-oriented approach for the management of diabetes.
