Effect of regeneration method and ash deposition on diesel particulate filter performance: a review

As countries around the world pay more attention to environmental protection, the corresponding emission regulations have become more stringent. Exhaust pollutants cause great harm to the environment and people, and diesel engines are one of the most important sources of pollution. Diesel particulate filter (DPF) technology has proven to be the most effective way to control and treat soot. In this paper, we review the latest research progress on DPF regeneration and ash. Passive regeneration, active regeneration, non-thermal plasma-assisted DPF regeneration and regeneration mechanism, DPF regeneration control assisted by engine management, and uncontrolled DPF regeneration and its control strategy are mainly introduced. In addition, the source, composition, and deposition of ash are described in detail, as well as the effect of ash on the DPF pressure drop and catalytic performance. Finally, the issues that need to be further addressed in DPF regeneration research are presented, along with challenges and future work in ash research. Over all, composite regeneration is still the mainstream regeneration method. The formation of ash is complex and there are still many unanswered questions that require further in-depth research.

Pollution and occupational protection of diesel particulate matter in underground space

To address the diesel particulate matter pollution problem at the 12,306 continuous mining face of Shangwan coal mine, the spatial and temporal evolution law of diesel particulate matter generated at the three locations of the shuttle car head tunnel, contact alley, and support tunnel under the pressure-in ventilation condition of the double lane of the continuous mining face was studied by numerical simulation. The results show that the highest diesel particulate matter concentration at the shuttle car discharge is about 144.17 mg/m³, which seriously affects the health of miners. The highest diesel particulate matter concentration at the shuttle car tunnel is 52.58 mg/m³, and at the contact alley, the diesel particulate matter diffusion space is limited by the compression of the space inside the contact alley by the shuttle car machine body and the alley wall, which makes the diesel particulate matter accumulate here, forming a high diesel particulate matter concentration distribution area with a concentration value of 112.75 mg/m³. When supporting the roadway at the shuttle, diesel particulate matter accumulates in the range of X = 55 m ~ 60 m, Y = 0 m ~ 4 m, and Z = 23.4 m ~ 29.4 m. According to the degree of DPM pollution in different areas, different individual protective equipment is used to obtain different levels of pollution protection.

In-vitro inhalation bioavailability estimation of Metal(oid)s in atmospheric particulate matter (PM2.5) using simulated alveolar lysosomal fluid: A dialyzability approach

A novel in-vitro method, by using synthetic body fluids, human physiological conditions and a simulated air-blood barrier (by using a dialysis membrane) has been developed and applied to assess in-vitro inhalation bioavailability of metal(oid)s associated to particulate matter (PM_2,5) samples collected from an industrial site of the Northwest of Spain. A validated analytical methodology based on inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to analyse metal(oid)s concentrations in bioavailable fractions. This approach would be a more realistic human health risk assessment since considering processes that occur in human body in contrast the overestimation derived from current models (which consider environmental concentrations). Metal(oid)s such as Cu and Mo seemed to be the most bioavailable (mean in-vitro bioavailability ratios higher than 70%); Ba, Cd, Mn, Pb, Rb, Sb, Sn, V and Zn shown mean ratios between 20 and 60%, while low in-vitro bioavailability ratios (less than 20%) were observed for metal(oid)s such as Al, Co, Cr, Fe, Ni, Ti, and Tl. Health risk assessment via inhalation based on hazard carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic indexes (HI_c and HI_nc, respectively) were performed considering three exposure scenarios using both inhalation bioavailable and total metal(oid)s concentrations in PM_2.5 samples, suggesting no risk to human health. The influence of chemical composition on in-vitro bioavailability ratios was obtained, pointing out that inhalation ratios of Al, Ba, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pb and V seem to be affected by sea salt and/or crustal and/or biogenic and/or anthropogenic content of PM_2.5.

Data-Driven Framework for Understanding and Predicting Air Quality in Urban Areas

Monitoring, predicting, and controlling the air quality in urban areas is one of the effective solutions for tackling the climate change problem. Leveraging the availability of big data in different domains like pollutant concentration, urban traffic, aerial imagery of terrains and vegetation, and weather conditions can aid in understanding the interactions between these factors and building a reliable air quality prediction model. This research proposes a novel cost-effective and efficient air quality modeling framework including all these factors employing state-of-the-art artificial intelligence techniques. The framework also includes a novel deep learning-based vegetation detection system using aerial images. The pilot study conducted in the UK city of Cambridge using the proposed framework investigates various predictive models ranging from statistical to machine learning and deep recurrent neural network models. This framework opens up possibilities of broadening air quality modeling and prediction to other domains like vegetation or green space planning or green traffic routing for sustainable urban cities. The research is mainly focused on extracting strong pieces of evidence which could be useful in proposing better policies around climate change.

Effects of a barium-based additive on gaseous and particulate emissions of a diesel engine

The addition of barium-based additives is one of the main methods used to suppress smoke emissions in non-road diesel engines. Herein, a commercial barium-based additive was added to diesel fuel at the manufacturer's recommended concentration and used in a non-road four-cylinder supercharged diesel engine, without an after-treatment system, in bench experiments. Regulated emissions of the diesel engine were measured, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter (PM) were sampled. The carbonaceous fraction, water-soluble ions and inorganic elements in the PM were analyzed. Results indicated that the additive effectively reduced carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbon (HC) and smoke emissions from the engine. A 71% reduction in smoke was observed at the rated working condition, which was the maximum reduction of the three tested conditions. The additive produced a 36% reduction of VOCs at the rated working condition. The proportion of high carbon number hydrocarbons in the VOCs increased while the atmospheric reactivity of the VOCs decreased. The additive suppressed the concentration of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) emissions with a maximum reduction (40%) of total carbon achieved under the rated working condition. After the application of the additive, the concentration of water-soluble ions (Cl^-, SO₄^2-, NO₃^-, Na⁺, K⁺, Ca²⁺, NH₄⁺) and elements (Fe, Mn, S, Ca, Ba) in the PM increased. A trend of increasing Barium content in the PM matched a similar trend of decreasing smoke.

Neurotoxicity induced by toluene: In silico and in vivo evidences of mitochondrial dysfunction and dopaminergic neurodegeneration

Toluene is an air pollutant widely used as an organic solvent in industrial production and emitted by fossil fuel combustion, in addition to being used as a drug of abuse. Its toxic effects in the central nervous system have not been well established, and how and which neurons are affected remains unknown. Hence, this study aimed to fill this gap by investigating three central questions: 1) How does toluene induce neurotoxicity? 2) Which neurons are affected? And 3) What are the long-term effects induced by airborne exposure to toluene? To this end, a Caenorhabditis elegans model was employed, in which worms at the fourth larval stage were exposed to toluene in the air for 24 h in a vapor chamber to simulate four exposure scenarios. After the concentration-response curve analysis, we chose scenarios 3 (E3: 792 ppm) and 4 (E4: 1094 ppm) for the following experiments. The assays were performed 1, 48, or 96 h after removal from the exposure environments, and an irreversible reduction in neuron fluorescence and morphologic alterations were observed in different neurons of exposed worms, particularly in the dopaminergic neurons. Moreover, a significant impairment in a dopaminergic-dependent behavior was also associated with negative effects in healthspan endpoints, and we also noted that mitochondria may be involved in toluene-induced neurotoxicity since lower adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) levels and mitochondrial viability were observed. In addition, a reduction of electron transport chain activity was evidenced using ex vivo protocols, which were reinforced by in silico and in vitro analysis, demonstrating toluene action in the mitochondrial complexes. Based on these findings model, it is plausible that toluene neurotoxicity can be initiated by complex I inhibition, triggering a mitochondrial dysfunction that may lead to irreversible dopaminergic neuronal death, thus impairing neurobehavioral signaling.

Incorporating bioaccessibility and source apportionment into human health risk assessment of heavy metals in urban dust of Xiamen, China

Heavy metals in urban dust could pose noticeable human health risks, but there are few studies focusing on comprehensive human health risk assessment with the incorporation of both bioaccessibility and source apportionment in urban dust. Thus, fifty-eight urban dust samples were collected from kindergartens in Xiamen to analyze the bioaccessibility-based, source-specific health risk of heavy metals (V, Co, Ni, As, Mo, Cr, Mn, Cu, Zn, and Pb). Most heavy metals, except for V and Mn, were significantly enriched in urban dust based on their values of geoaccumulation index (Igeo) and may be influenced by human activities. The oral bioaccessibility values of heavy metals, which were estimated by the Solubility/Bioaccessibility Research Consortium (SBRC) in vitro model, ranged from 1.563% to 76.51%. The source apportionment determined by applying the absolute principal component analysis-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) model indicated five main potential sources, coal combustion, traffic and industrial, natural, construction and furniture sources, and unidentified sources, with contributions of 34.09%, 20.72%, 18.72%, 7.597% and 18.87%, respectively, to the accumulation of heavy metals in urban dust. After incorporating bioaccessibility adjustments, lower non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of heavy metals were observed than those based on total metal content, with the mean hazard index (HI) values being less than the threshold value (1) and the mean total carcinogenic risk (TCR) values exceeding the precautionary criterion (10-6) for both adults and children. By combining bioaccessibility-based health risk assessment and source apportionment, traffic and industrial emissions and coal combustion dominated the noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks induced by heavy metals in urban dust, respectively. This study is expected to promote the systematic integration of source apportionment and bioaccessibility into health risk estimation for heavy metal contamination in urban dust, thus providing useful implications for better human health protection.

Plastic ingestion by the Wels catfish (Silurus glanis L.): detailed chemical analysis and degradation state evaluation

Plastic ingestion by various organisms within different trophic levels, including humans, is becoming a serious problem worldwide. Plastic waste samples are often found concentrated in an organism's digestive tract and can be degraded and further translocate to the surrounding tissue or circulatory systems and accumulate in food chains. In the present work, we report a detailed chemical analysis and degradation state evaluation of a relatively large piece of plastic waste found in the gastrointestinal tract of a Wels catfish (Silurus glanis L.) caught in the Bodrog River (Danube River basin), eastern Slovakia. Chemical analysis by surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) was performed to identify the surface composition of the digested plastic piece. Micro-Fourier transform infrared (μFTIR) spectroscopy showed that the plastic waste was oxidized low-density polyethylene (LDPE), with some nylon fibers adhered on the surface. Glyceraldehyde adhered onto LDPE was also detected, which might come from the carbohydrate metabolism of that fish. A morphology study by digital optical microscopy indicated solid inorganic particles attached to the surface of LDPE. A degradation study by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed considerable oxidation of LDPE, leading to fragmentation and disintegration of the plastic waste material.

Environmental Risk Assessment of Vehicle Exhaust Particles on Aquatic Organisms of Different Trophic Levels

Vehicle emission particles (VEPs) represent a significant part of air pollution in urban areas. However, the toxicity of this category of particles in different aquatic organisms is still unexplored. This work aimed to extend the understanding of the toxicity of the vehicle exhaust particles in two species of marine diatomic microalgae, the planktonic crustacean Artemia salina, and the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus intermedius. These aquatic species were applied for the first time in the risk assessment of VEPs. Our results demonstrated that the samples obtained from diesel-powered vehicles completely prevented egg fertilization of the sea urchin S. intermedius and caused pronounced membrane depolarization in the cells of both tested microalgae species at concentrations between 10 and 100 mg/L. The sample with the highest proportion of submicron particles and the highest content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) had the highest growth rate inhibition in both microalgae species and caused high toxicity to the crustacean. The toxicity level of the other samples varied among the species. We can conclude that metal content and the difference in the concentrations of PAHs by itself did not directly reflect the toxic level of VEPs, but the combination of both a high number of submicron particles and high PAH concentrations had the highest toxic effect on all the tested species.

Behavior of the particulate matter (PM) emitted by trackless rubber-tyred vehicle (TRTV) at an idle speed under different movement conditions and ventilation optimization

The particulate matter (PM) emitted by a trackless rubber-tyred vehicle (TRTV) in coal mines can seriously threaten the health and safety of the exposed workers underground. In this paper, in order to effectively reduce the PM concentration and improve the underground working environment, a combination of numerical simulations and field measurements was adopted to study the migration distribution of the PM emitted by a TRTV at an idle speed for 60 s under different movement conditions, and the dilution effects of the ventilation rate on the PM. The results showed that under different movement conditions, the PM mainly moved along the floor of the roadway, but upward diffusion trends were shown overall, which meant that the chambers are in high-risk areas. Field measurements were then performed under the two conditions to verify the effectiveness of the simulations. Furthermore, the dilution effects of the increased ventilation rate on the PM were analyzed. It was concluded that the optimal dilution ventilation rate under condition 1 was 4600m³/min, and that under condition 2 was 2800m³/min. Accordingly, the driver of the TRTV should try to move forward when entering the chamber.

Bioaccessibility and public health risk of heavy Metal(loid)s in the airborne particulate matter of four cities in northern China

Atmospheric coarse particulate matter (PM₁₀) enriched with heavy metal(loid)s could pose potentially significant health risk to humans, while accurate health risk assessment calls for characterization of their bioaccessibility, besides the total contents. The health risk of major toxic heavy metal(loid)s in the PM₁₀ from four large cities in northern China via inhalation was investigated based on their total contents and bioaccessibility. The annual mean concentrations of PM-bound Zn, As, Pb, and Mn in the atmosphere of the four cities were 650, 305, 227, and 177 ng⋅m^-3, respectively. The levels of heavy metal(loid)s in the PM₁₀ were generally higher in winter but lower in summer in all four cities, which resulted primarily from the emissions associated with coal combustion for district and household heating and the unfavorable meteorological conditions in winter. The bioaccessibility of heavy metal(loid)s in the PM₁₀ ranged from 0.9 to 48.7%, following the general order of Mn > Co > Ni > Cd > Cu > As > Cr > Zn > Pb. Based on their total contents in the PM₁₀, most heavy metal(loid)s posed significant public health risk via inhalation exposure in the four cities. However, after accounting for the bioaccessibility of metal(loid)s, the non-carcinogenic risk of most metal(loid)s was negligible, except for As in the PM₁₀ of Jinzhong, while only the carcinogenic risk posed by Cr and As in the PM₁₀ exceeded the acceptable level. These findings demonstrate the importance of characterizing the bioaccessibility of airborne PM-bound heavy metal(loid)s in health risk assessment and could guide the on-going efforts on reducing the public health risk of PM₁₀ in northern China.

Characterization of Pollutant Emissions from Typical Material Handling Equipment Using a Portable Emission Measurement System

Non-road equipment has been an important source of pollutants that negatively affect air quality in China. An accurate emission inventory for non-road equipment is therefore required to improve air quality. The objective of this paper was to characterize emissions from typical diesel-fueled material handling equipment (loaders and cranes) using a portable emission measurement system. Instantaneous, modal, and composite emissions were quantified in this study. Three duty modes (idling, moving, and working) were used. Composite emission factors were estimated using modal emissions and time-fractions for typical duty cycles. Results showed that emissions from loaders and cranes were higher and more variable for the moving and working modes than the idling mode. The estimated fuel-based CO, HC, NO, and PM2.5 composite emission factors were 21.7, 2.7, 38.2, and 3.6 g/(kg-fuel), respectively, for loaders, and 8.7, 2.4, 28.3, and 0.3 g/(kg-fuel), respectively, for cranes. NO emissions were highest and should be the main focus for emission controls. CO, HC, NO, and PM2.5 emissions measured were different from emission factors in the US Environmental Protection Agency NONROAD model and the Chinese National Guideline for Emission Inventory Development for Non-Road Equipment. This indicates that improving emission inventory accuracy for non-road equipment requires more real-world emission measurements.

Exposure to air pollution from traffic-generated sources is known to contribute to the etiology of inflammatory diseases, including cardiovascular disease (CVD) and obesity; however, the signaling pathways involved are still under investigation. Dysregulation of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS) can contribute to CVD and alter lipid storage and inflammation in adipose tissue. Our previous exposure studies revealed that traffic-generated emissions increase RAS signaling, further exacerbated by a high-fat diet. Thus, we investigated the hypothesis that exposure to engine emissions increases systemic and local adipocyte RAS signaling, promoting the expression of factors involved in CVD and obesity. Male C57BL/6 mice (6–8 wk old) were fed either a high-fat (HF, n = 16) or low-fat (LF, n = 16) diet, beginning 30d prior to exposures, and then exposed via inhalation to either filtered air (FA, controls) or a mixture of diesel engine + gasoline engine vehicle emissions (MVE: 100 μg PM/m³) via whole-body inhalation for 6 h/d, 7 d/wk, 30d. Endpoints were assessed via immunofluorescence and RT-qPCR. MVE-exposure promoted vascular adhesion factors (VCAM-1, ICAM-1) expression, monocyte/macrophage sequestration, and oxidative stress in the vasculature, associated with increased angiotensin II receptor type 1 (AT1) expression. In the kidney, MVE-exposure promoted the expression of renin, AT1, and AT2 receptors. In adipose tissue, both HF-diet and MVE-exposure mediated increased epididymal fat pad weight and adipocyte hypertrophy, associated with increased angiotensinogen and AT1 receptor expression; however, these outcomes were further exacerbated in the MVE + HF group. MVE-exposure also induced inflammation, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, and leptin, while reducing insulin receptor and glucose transporter, GLUT4, expression in adipose tissue. Our results indicate that MVE-exposure promotes systemic and local adipose RAS signaling, associated with increased expression of factors contributing to CVD and obesity, further exacerbated by HF diet consumption.

A methodological framework for improving air quality monitoring network layout. Applications to environment management

This work aims to provide a methodology framework which allows to improve the performance and efficiency of an air quality monitoring network (AQMN). It requires to be constituted by a minimum and reliable number of measurement sites. Nevertheless, the AQMN efficiency should be assessed over time, as a consequence of the possible emergence of new emission sources of air pollutants, which could lead to variations on their spatial distribution within the target area. PM₁₀ particles data monitored by the Community of Madrid's (Spain) AQMN between 2008 and 2017 were used to develop a methodology to optimize the AQMN performance. The annual spatial distribution of average PM₁₀ levels over the studied period monitored by all current stations vs those more representative was provided by a geographic information system (GIS), and the percentage of similarity between both postulates was quantified using simple linear regression (> 95%). As one innovative tool of this study, the practical application of the proposed methodology was validated using PM₁₀ particles data measured by AQMN during 2007 and 2018, reaching a similitude degree higher than 95%. The influence of temporal variation on the proposed methodological framework was around 20%. The proposed methodology sets criteria for identifying non-redundant stations within AQMN, it is also able to appropriately assess the representativeness of fixed monitoring sites within an AQMN and it complements the guidelines set by European legislation on air pollutants monitoring at fixed stations, which could help to tackle efforts to improve the air quality management.

Comparative and Combined In Vitro Vasotoxicity of Nanoparticles Containing Lead and Cadmium

In vitro toxicological experiments were performed on an endothelial cell line exposed to different doses of spherical nanoparticles of cadmium and/or of lead sulfides with mean diameter 37 ± 5 nm and 24 ± 4 nm, respectively. Toxic effects were estimated by Luminescent Cell Viability Assay, endothelin-1 concentration and cell size determination. Some dose-response relationships were typically monotonic (well approximated with hyperbolic function) while others were bi- or even 3-phasic and could be described within the expanded hormesis paradigm. The combined toxicity type variated depending on the effect it was assessed by.

Fucoxanthin-rich fraction from Sargassum fusiformis alleviates particulate matter-induced inflammation in vitro and in vivo

Particulate matter (PM) contributes to air pollution and primarily originates from unregulated industrial emissions and seasonal natural dust emissions. Fucoxanthin (Fx) is a marine natural pigment from brown macroalgae that has been shown to have various beneficial effects on health. However, the effects of Fx on PM-induced toxicities in cells and animals have not been assessed. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory potential of the Fx-rich fraction (FxRF) of Sargassum fusiformis against PM-mediated inflammatory responses. The FxRF composition was analyzed by rapid-resolution liquid chromatography mass spectrometry. Fx and other main pigments were identified. FxRF attenuated the production of inflammatory components, including prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), cyclooxygenase-2, interleukin (IL)-1β, and IL-6 from PM-exposed HaCaT keratinocytes. PM exposure also reduced the levels of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor-α, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and PGE2 in PM-exposed RAW264.7 macrophages. Additionally, the culture medium from PM-exposed HaCaT cells induced upregulation of NO, iNOS, PGE2, and pro-inflammatory cytokines in RAW264.7 macrophages. FxRF also significantly decreased the expression levels of factors involved in inflammatory responses, such as NO, reactive oxygen species, and cell death, in PM-exposed zebrafish embryos. These results demonstrated the potential protective effects of FxRF against PM-induced inflammation both in vitro and in a zebrafish model.

Light absorption enhancement of particulate matters and their source apportionment over the Asian continental outflow site and South Yellow Sea

Light absorption enhancement of black carbon due to the aerosol mixing states is an important parameterization for climate modeling, while emission source contributions to the enhancement factor are unclear. An intensive campaign was conducted simultaneously at a China coastal site (Qingdao city) and maritime sites (South Yellow Sea, SYS) in August and Nov to Dec 2018. The absorption enhancement (E_MAC) of the black carbon was calculated using a two-step solvent dissolution protocol and found 1.96 ± 0.68, 1.64 ± 0.38, and 2.40 ± 0.76 for Qingdao summer (QS), Qingdao autumn (QA), and SYS, respectively. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) model identified six sources of PM_2.5 and E_MAC, which were secondary aerosol (with contribution 27.9% and 29.2%), coal combustion (24.9% and 20.2%), industrial emissions (15.2% and 25.4%), sea salt (6.9% and 9.6%), vehicle emissions (12.1% and 10.9%), and soil dust (13.0% and 4.7%), respectively. These sources increased the absorption of black carbon by a factor of 1.25 ± 0.11 (secondary aerosol), 1.21 ± 0.20 (industrial emissions), 1.17 ± 0.08 (coal combustion), 1.09 ± 0.07 (vehicle emissions), 1.08 ± 0.17 (sea salt), and 1.04 ± 0.10 (soil dust). Based on the correlation between PM and E_MAC source contributions, we estimated that secondary aerosols, industrial emissions, and coal combustion contributed to 74.8% of absorption enhancement at a regional scale in China. The source apportionment for E_MAC offers a new diagnosis for each source regarding aerosol forcing simulation which inputs from the individual emission sector.

Exposure to particulate matter (PM) is one of the most important environmental issues in Europe with major health impact. Various sizes of PM are suspended in the atmosphere and contributes to ambient air pollution. The current study aimed to explore the differential gene expression in blood, and the effect on the respective biological signaling pathways in Wistar rats, after exposure to PM2.5 and PM1 ambient air particles for an eight-week period. A control group was included with animals breathing non-filtered atmospheric air. In parallel, filtered PM2.5 and PM1 was collected in separate samplers. The results after whole genome microarray analysis showed 23 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between control and PM2.5 group. In addition, pairwise comparison between control and PM1 group displayed 5635 DEGs linked to 69 biological pathways involved in inflammatory response, cell cycle and carcinogenicity. The smaller the size of the inhaled particles, the more gene alterations are triggered compared to non-filtered air group. More specifically, in inflammation signaling procedures differentially regulated gene expression was shown for interleukin-4 (IL-4), IL-7, IL-1, IL-5, IL-9, IL-6 and IL-2. We have identified that RASGFR1, TRIM65, TRIM33, PLEKHB1, CAR4, S100A8, S100A9, ALPL, NP4 and the PROK2 genes are potential targets for the development of adverse outcome pathways (AOPs) due to “real-life” exposure of Wistar rats. Particle measurements during the exposure period showed elevated concentrations of Fe, Mn and Zn in both PM1 and PM2.5 filter fractions, and of Cu in PM2.5. In addition, water-soluble concentration of metals showed significant differences between PM1 and PM2.5 fractions for V, Zn, As, Pb and Mn. In summary, in this study specific gene biomarkers of exposure to ambient air have been identified and heavy metals that are possibly linked to their altered regulation have been found. The results of this research will pave the way for the development of novel AOPs concerning the health effects of the environmental pollution.

Hazards and risk assessment of heavy metals from consumption of locally manufactured painkiller drugs in Nigeria

In the informal sector of Nigeria's economy, jobs are done manually as against automation resulting in body stress and pain, hence the need for painkiller drugs. Thirty different locally manufactured painkiller drugs, with analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects, were randomly sampled from pharmaceutical shops within Awka in October 2016. The drugs were pulverised, sieved and ashed before digestion using conc aqua regia HCl : HNO3 (3:1), carcinogenic heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury, nicked and lead) were assayed using Varian AA240 atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Risk assessment was carried out using US EPA model. The highest levels of arsenic (0.350 mg/kg) were found in samples with code 01, 03 and 020, cadmium (0.107 mg/kg and 0.144 mg/kg) were in samples code 013 and 028, and samples 03 and 011 had chromium levels as 6.637 mg/kg and 5.298 mg/kg. Highest value of mercury (0.470 mg/kg) was in sample code 01. All the painkiller drugs have nickel in the range of 0.046-0.448 mg/kg while highest values of lead were in sample code 05, 025 and 029 as 2.47 mg/kg, 1.11 mg/kg and 1.16 mg/kg. Non-cancer risk ranged as As (Nd -1.60 × 10-3), Cd (Nd-1.97 × 10-4), Cr (Nd-6.06 × 10-6), Hg (Nd-2.15 × 10-4), Ni (9.93 × 10-6-3.34 × 10-5) and Pb (Nd-4.36 × 10-4) while the cancer risk were As (Nd-1.63 × 10-7), Cd (Nd-4.45 × 10-9), Cr (Nd-1.56 × 10-7), Hg (Nd -1.53 × 10-9), Ni (1.50 × 10-10 -1.46 × 10-9) and Pb (Nd-8.82 × 10-9). The total cancer risk (TCR) and total non-cancer risk (TNCR) for all the heavy metals were in the range of 7.21 × 10-13-1.25 × 10-10 and 1.51 × 10-7-5.56 × 10-5 respectively. The TCR was below 1 × 10-6 -1 × 10-4 range while TNCR for heavy metals was below 1; the values established by US EPA. In conclusion, continuous consumption of locally Nigerian made painkiller drugs may expose the subjects to heavy metal toxicity.

Air Pollution of Nature Reserves near Cities in Russia

Today, protected natural areas cover about 15% of the Earth's land. These areas by definition are supposed to be free of pollution; they nevertheless suffer from the effects of aerial transport of anthropogenic polluting substances. In this study, we evaluated the impact of settlements on protected natural areas to determine the optimal distance beyond which the anthropogenic influence would be minimal. For this purpose, we analyzed the particle size distribution and the content of metals in fresh snow samples collected in the Bastak Nature Reserve and the neighboring Birobidzhan city (Russian Federation). Both sites contained comparable proportions of PM₁₀ and contents of heavy metals, which points to the transportation of air pollutants from the city to the reserve. The results of the analysis were summarized and compared with the available data on other nature reserves and nearby populated localities. Based on the research data, pollutant emissions should be decreased for cities that are closer than 50 km to nature reserves. Moreover, authorities should take into consideration atmospheric factors and distance to the nearest settlement when establishing new protected natural areas.

The association between the diesel exhaust particle exposure from bus emission and the tubular epithelial cell deformation of rats

The diesel vehicle emissions regarding particles have become a problem due to human health adversely. Especially ultrafine particles (diameter ≤ 100 nm) can deeply penetrate the human body leading to cell deformation. Investigation of the diesel ultrafine particle exposure to the cell deformation has become a challenge to build up understanding the impacts of ultrafine particles on human health. Moreover, the relationship between high exposure to diesel ultrafine particles and the deformation of the rat's tubular epithelial cells is not clear. In this study, we investigated the impact of the diesel ultrafine particle exposure to the rat's tubular cells. Three diesel busses were used as the sources of the particles, while 50 rats were used as the experimental animals. The diesel emission was filtered using an N95 particulate filter and a suction pump. The rats were exposed to the diesel ultrafine particle emission for 100 s with three different concentrations C₁, C₂, and C₃ for eight consecutive days. All rats were sacrificed on the day after exposures to examine the histological images. The results showed that the deformation level of the tubular epithelial cells was positively associated with the concentration of the ultrafine particles.

Airborne environmental fine particles induce intense inflammatory response regardless of the absence of heavy metal elements

Airborne environmental particles (EP) more commonly referred as particulate matter (PM) are an illustrative marker of air pollution that is associated with adverse effects on human health. Considering, PM is a complex mixture, not only in terms of its chemical composition, but also in the range of particle size, it is difficult to identify which attribute contributes more for the toxicity. Currently, there is no report about the immunotoxicological effects caused by PM with reduced content of heavy metals. This study intends to address this gap and provides a detailed characterization and immunotoxicity evaluation of PM collected in an urban area with heavy traffic congestion. Environmental particles were separated by different sizes though a sucrose gradient. This method allowed to achieve 4 sized fractions: EP f 15 % with a mean diameter of 284 nm ± 1.86 nm, EP f 25 % with a mean diameter of 461 nm ± 1.72 nm, EP f 35 % with a mean diameter of 1845 nm ± 251 nm and EP f 45 % with a mean diameter of 2204 nm ± 310 nm. Only the fractions with the smallest sizes (EP f 15 % and EP f 25 %) were subsequently studied. The chemical composition of both fractions was not substantially different, and the dominant elements were C, O, Ca and K. Only EP f 25 % showed to have a small amount of Fe. Therefore, the heavy metal elements were eliminated through centrifugation. Essentially, we found that the EP f 15 % was more cytotoxic in RAW 264.7 cells than EP f 25 %, which indicates the smaller size as the motive for the higher toxicity. In addition, both fractions of EP presented a good internalization in macrophages after 2 h exposure and induced the production of reactive oxygen species in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, EP f 15 % and EP f 25 % led to a strong secretion of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (hPBMCs) in the 3 concentrations tested. The inflammatory response observed was independent of the presence of heavy metals and endotoxins, since these last were suppressed by using polymyxin B sulfate. This report emphasizes the importance of an adequate physicochemical characterization and adequate controls in the experiments to achieve a right interpretation of the biological effects caused by PM.

Identification of cement in atmospheric particulate matter using the hybrid method of laser diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy

The production of cement is associated with the emissions of dust and particulate matter, nitrogen oxides (NO_x), sulfur dioxide (SO₂), carbon monoxide (CO), heavy metals, and volatile organic compounds into the environment. People living near cement production facilities are potentially exposed to these pollutants, including carcinogens, although at lower doses than the factory workers. In this study we focused on the distribution of fine particulate matter, the composition, size patterns, and spatial distribution of the emissions from Spassk cement plant in Primorsky Krai, Russian Federation. The particulate matter was studied in wash-out from vegetation (conifer needles) using a hybrid method of laser diffraction analysis and Raman spectroscopy. The results showed that fine particulate matter (PM₁₀ fraction) extended to the entire town and its neighbourhood. The percentage of PM₁₀ in different areas of the town and over the course of two seasons ranged from 34.8% to 65% relative to other size fractions of particulate matter. It was further shown that up to 80% of the atmospheric PM content at some sampling points was composed of cement-containing particles. This links the cement production in Spassk-Dalny with overall morbidity of the town population and pollution of the environment.

Chitosan from crustacean shell waste and its protective role against lead toxicity in Oreochromis mossambicus

In the current study heavy metal removing capability and antioxidant properties of chitosan supplemented diet tested in lead poisoning induced Oreochromis mossambicus in comparison with and standard fish diet. O. mossambicus fishes weighed (20 ± 2gm) were purchased from a local commercial fish pond and acclimated to the laboratory conditions for 10 days. After that fish were dived into four groups, each group received respective feed throughout the experimental period. The fish fed with standard diet exhibited drastic weakening of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), reduced glutathione (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), ascorbic acid, α- tocopherol and β-carotene and also displayed abnormal histological changes in gills, liver, and intestine. The fish fed with a chitosan supplemented diet for 10 days showed substantial enhancements in antioxidant levels and also normal histological structures of organs in the fish.

Moderate-intensity physical activity reduces systemic inflammation and maintains cardiorespiratory function following chronic particulate matter2.5 exposure in rats

Aims

The purpose of the current study is to 1) examine the beneficial effects of moderate levels of physical activity (PA) on functional and biochemical markers of the cardiorespiratory system, 2) establish the detrimental effects of a single, daily particulate matter (PM) exposure event on cardiorespiratory function and 3) determine if exercising during daily PM exposure increases the deleterious effects caused by PM exposure due to increased inhalation of particulates on cardiorespiratory function.

Methods

Four groups of 16 rats were used: control (CON), PA, PM_2.5 exposed and PA combined with PM_2.5 exposure (PA + PM). Animals were purchased at 4 weeks old. However, both PA and PM exposure was initiated when the animals reached 8 weeks of age, for 8 weeks.

Results

PA alone did not alter body weight or blood pressure (BP) compared to control animals. However, there was a significant decrease in epididymal fat pad mass in the PA group. The PM exposed rats were hypertensive, showed increased systemic inflammation and oxidative stress, and had decreased spleen mass without pathological changes in the cardiac action potential or impaired vascular function. PA was able to decrease systemic inflammation in PM exposed animals, including a reduction in IL-6 serum levels, however, this did not translate to an improvement in BP or vascular reactivity. Smooth muscle relaxation in the trachea from the combination PA + PM group was not significantly different to CON and PA groups but was significantly higher than the PM group.

Conclusions

The current study showed that while there is an increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk associated with PM exposure, engaging in PA during exposure events imposes no increased risk with exercise providing a protective mechanism against some of the biochemical signaling changes caused by inhaled PM.

Mining and Analysis of Air Quality Data to Aid Climate Change

The data science and AI community has gathered around the world to support tackling the climate change problem in different domains. This research aims to work on the air quality through emissions and pollutant concentration data along with vegetation information. Authorities especially in urban cities like London have been very vigilant in monitoring these different aspects of air quality and reliable sources of big data are available in this domain. This study aims to mine and collate this information spread all over the place in different formats into usable knowledge base on which further data analysis and powerful Machine Learning approaches can be built to extract strong evidences useful in building better policies around climate change.

Health risk assessment of cadmium, chromium and nickel from car paint dust from used automobiles at auto-panel workshops in Nigeria

Fairly used vehicular importation into Nigeria is reputed to be the highest in Africa.

Most modern cars/vehicles are fitted with some electronic, electrical devices and mechanical components that contain heavy metals.

Due to prevailing economic hardship and the fact that new vehicles are out of reach of average Nigerians, the vehicles are taken to the automobile workshops for total overhaul and refurbishing.

Metal values of soil from all the workshops were higher than that of paint dust matrix, this can be attributed to the fact that as vehicles are repaired and taken away, more are brought into the workshops for repair.

For cadmium and chromium, children are marginally at risk of cancer than adult through ingestion, while dermal contact does not pose any serious threat.

Nigeria’s economic problems which inhibited local production has resulted in massive importation of used automobiles. Most of these automobiles need some repairs and reworking, having outlived their lifespan in the manufacturer’s country. This study centers on the human carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risk assessment of cadmium, chromium and nickel exposures from reworking of imported used vehicles. Scraped car paint dusts from 56 Japanese made cars were collected from 8 different panel beating (body works) workshops (A–H) in Southeastern Nigeria. They were homogenized, mixed, divided into fine particles, filtered and digested by standard method. The filtrates were assayed for cadmium, chromium and nickel with atomic absorption spectrophotometry (AAS, 200A), workshops F and D have the highest concentration (mg/kg) of Cd (3.58 ± 0.02) and (3.36 ± 0.04) and higher than levels in workshops A, B, C, E, G and H. Chromium (mg/kg) in workshops F and G were (2.87 ± 0.04) and (2.95 ± 0.06) and higher than the other workshops. Nickel in workshop A (3.84 ± 0.04) is close to other workshop values. The highest hazard quotients for adults were cadmium in workshops B (1.37E-01), D (1.69E-01), E (1.79E-01) (inhalation), chromium [workshops G (5.45E-02), F (5.29E-02) and C (5.24E-02) inhalation]. Nickel -workshop A (5.9E-03) for children (inhalation). HQ in children through ingestion is cadmium (3.72E-04) workshop F and ingestion- 3.21E-01(workshop F) while nickel is 1.06E-02 (workshop A).The highest cancer risks were in exponents -4,-7 and -8 (adult) and -3, -6 and -9 (children) for workshops A–H through inhalation, ingestion and dermal contact, exposures to scrap car paint dust may be of significant public health importance in Nigeria as it can add to body burden of some carcinogenic heavy metals.
