Exposure to lead and cadmium of the Belgian consumers from ceramic food contact articles

Risk assessment of eighteen elements leaching from ceramic tableware in China

Ceramic products are among the most frequently used food contact materials. Health risks associated with ceramic tableware usually arise from the migration of heavy metals. In this study, 767 pieces of ceramic tableware of different shapes and types were collected across China, and the migration levels of 18 elements were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Migration tests were conducted according to the Chinese National Food Safety Standard - Ceramic Ware (GB 4806.4) with microwaveable and non-microwavable samples under different conditions. The food consumption of consumers via different shapes of ceramic tableware was obtained through a self-reported web-based survey, and the estimated dietary intakes of the studied elements were calculated accordingly. The exposure assessment showed that certain metals leached from the ceramic tableware at levels of concern. In addition, the applicability of the migration experiment conditions for microwaveable ceramic ware in GB 4806.4 needs to be further investigated.

A rapid magnetic-based purification of Cd2+ and Pb2+ prior to portable electrochemical determination for grain

How to quickly separate and detect cadmium (Cd²⁺) and lead (Pb²⁺) from solid samples is a difficult problem that needs to be solved. For this, Fe₃O₄@agarose@iminodiacetic acid (IDA) was synthesized and used for rapid purification of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺. This material can remove complex matrix interference completely within a short time of 15 min. The mechanism of the adsorption kinetics fit well to a pseudo-second-order model. A portable screen-printed electrodes (SPEs)-based electrochemical detection platform was established. After coupling with the pretreatment, the whole detection process only took within 30 min. The limits of detection (LOD) were ten times lower than those of the Codex general standard, with values of 0.02 and 0.01 mg/kg for Pb²⁺ and Cd²⁺, respectively. The recoveries ranged from 84.1% to 109.7% in naturally contaminated grain, in good agreement with the ICP-MS, demonstrating great prospects for the rapid screening and monitoring of Cd²⁺ and Pb²⁺ in grain.

Fruit-Based Fermented Beverages: Contamination Sources and Emerging Technologies Applied to Assure Their Safety

The food and beverage market has become broader due to globalization and consumer claims. Under the umbrella of consumer demands, legislation, nutritional status, and sustainability, the importance of food and beverage safety must be decisive. A significant sector of food production is related to ensuring fruit and vegetable conservation and utilization through fermentation. In this respect, in this review, we critically analyzed the scientific literature regarding the presence of chemical, microbiological and physical hazards in fruit-based fermented beverages. Furthermore, the potential formation of toxic compounds during processing is also discussed. In managing the risks, biological, physical, and chemical techniques can reduce or eliminate any contaminant from fruit-based fermented beverages. Some of these techniques belong to the technological flow of obtaining the beverages (i.e., mycotoxins bound by microorganisms used in fermentation) or are explicitly applied for a specific risk reduction (i.e., mycotoxin oxidation by ozone). Providing manufacturers with information on potential hazards that could jeopardize the safety of fermented fruit-based drinks and strategies to lower or eliminate these hazards is of paramount importance.

Association of blood lead level with neurobehavior and neurotransmitter expressions in Indian children

Present study aimed to assess the alterations in neurotransmitter expression and its association with Blood Lead Level (BLL) and neurobehavioral pattern in children. 72 school going children were recruited. Blood lead levels were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. Neurobehavioral state was assessed by means of population specific scale i.e. CPMS (Childhood Psychopathological measurement Schedule). Serum serotonin and dopamine were estimated by ELISA, receptor and transporter gene expressions were assessed by quantitative real time PCR. Significant positive correlation was observed between Total CPMS score (i.e. adverse neurobehaviour) and BLL. Further, serum serotonin levels and dopamine receptor expression showed a negative and positive association with BLL, respectively. In similarity, serum serotonin levels showed a negative correlation and dopamine receptor expression had a significant positive correlation with total CPMS score. Environmental exposure to Lead (Pb) may result in significant alterations in the neurotransmitter levels which may be associated with neurobehavioral changes in the children exposed to Pb.
