Abstract
The solid-phase microextraction (SPME) bias problem limits comprehensive analysis of volatile compounds in real samples. The study introduces dual mode unity solid-phase microextraction (DMU-SPME) as a novel SPME mode to achieve balanced extraction of both volatile and low-volatile compounds. The DMU-SPME method exhibits excellent linearity (R2 ≥ 0.994), low quantitation limits (0.12-240 μg/L), and notable stability (relative standard deviations below 20 % for both intra-day and inter-day analyses). In practical application to soy sauce, the DMU-SPME method identified a total of 107 compounds, encompassing all those detected by both headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME). Theoretical insights indicate that DMU-SPME is less influenced by Kfs0 and Kfs in comparison to HS/DI-SPME, rendering it suitable for complex matrices containing both volatile and low-volatile compounds. In conclusion, DMU-SPME emerges as a highly effective extraction mode for analyzing volatile and low-volatile compounds in food, medical, and environmental samples.

Abstract
The intensive development of extraction methods based on μ-SPE extraction contributes to the increased interest in the synthesis of new sorption materials. This work presents the characterization of polystyrene fibers and polystyrene fibers blended with ZrO2 particles or polyaniline obtained by electrospinning and their use in the extraction of selected psychoactive drugs from biological samples. The characteristic of produced fibers is made by performing SEM images, measuring average fiber diameter, and examining their sorption abilities. Among the fibers based on pure polystyrene, tested in the first stage, the best sorption properties are demonstrated for the fibers obtained from a polystyrene solution in DMF with a concentration of 17.5 wt%. In the next stage, this material was modified with synthesized ZrO2 particles and polyaniline. Among the tested materials, the sorbent based on polystyrene with polyaniline shows the best sorption properties of the tested substances. The use of this material in the μ-SPE in a needle enables the extraction of selected compounds from aqueous and biological samples such as urine and human plasma.

Abstract
Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a sample pretreatment technique for enrichment of trace level of compounds from complex matrices. The fiber coating, as an extraction phase, is the significant part of SPME, which specifying the analytical performance of the developed SPME. In this study, a novel in situ fabricated Cu@porous carbon fiber that derived from copper benzene-1,4-dicarboxylate framework@pencil graphite (Cu-BDC MOF@PG) fiber was prepared as a SPME fiber. The Cu-BDC MOF was electrodeposited on the surface of pencil graphite. The Cu@porous carbon fiber with nanoporous structure was constructed by the direct carbonization of the electrosynthesized fiber. The Cu@porous carbon fiber showed high analytical performance for direct immersion SPME (DI-SPME) of acetamiprid and imidacloprid in fruit and vegetable samples. The SPME method was coupled by high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection (SPME-HPLC-UV) for determination of the analytes. Under the optimized condition, good linear ranges (1-500 μg L-1 and 0.5-200 μg L-1) and acceptable limits of detection (LODs = 0.30 and 0.15 μg L-1), appropriate spiking recoveries in the range 87-109.0% were attained for acetamiprid and imidacloprid, respectively. Intra- and inter-day relative standard deviations were found within the ranges of 2.35-3.46% and 3.30-3.70%, respectively. These results signify promising potential of the in situ fabricated porous carbon fiber for SPME applications. Considering that most of the pencil graphite is made of carbon, after the carbonization of the Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber, a unified porous carbon fiber is obtained. Compared to other reported procedures, in situ direct carbonization of Cu-BDC MOF@PG fiber was a one-step and straightforward method to fabricate carbon fiber.

Abstract
A new solid phase micro extraction (SPME) fiber coating composed of electrospun polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nanofibrous mat doped with superhydrophobic nanosilica (SiO2) was coated on a stainless-steel wire without the need of a binder. The coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) techniques and it was used in headspace-SPME of 16 organochlorine pesticides in water samples prior to gass chromatography micro electron capture detector (GC-µECD) analysis. The effects of main factors such as adsorption composition, electrospinning flow rate, salt concentration, extraction temperature, extraction time, and desorption conditions were investigated. Under the optimum conditions, the linear dynamic range (8−1000 ng L−1, R2 > 0.9907), limits of detection (3−80 ng L−1), limits of quantification (8−200 ng L−1), intra-day and inter-day precisions (at 400 and 1000 ng L−1, 1.7−13.8%), and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (2.4−13.4%) were evaluated. The analysis of spiked tap, sewage, industrial, and mineral water samples for the determination of the analytes resulted in satisfactory relative recoveries (78−120%).

Abstract
We report the first fabrication of sputtered carbon, solid-phase microextraction (SPME) fibers. These fibers have competitive extraction capabilities compared with the commercial carbon wide range (CWR) SPME fiber. This report also includes a demonstration of a newly developed SPME test mix that includes 15 different compounds with a wide range of functional groups and chemical properties. The fiber fabrication process involves sputtering carbon onto fused silica fibers, and the effects of throw distance on the morphology of the carbon coatings were studied. Four different carbon coating thicknesses were evaluated, with PDMS added as a stationary phase. These fibers were characterized with multiple analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), water contact angle (WCA) goniometry, as well as headspace (HS) and direct immersion (DI)–SPME–GC–MS. The best (11.5 µm) sputtered carbon SPME fibers, with and without PDMS, were evaluated using the new evaluation mix and compared with the commercial CWR fiber and a previously sputtered/developed silicon fiber. The new probe mix helped elucidate differences among the fibers, which would have been missed by current commercial test mixes. The sputtered carbon SPME fibers showed similar functional group selectivity as commercial CWR fibers. However, the sputtered carbon fibers showed higher responses per volume compared with the commercial CWR fiber, indicating the porous morphology of the sputtered carbon has the ability to overcome large phase thickness/volume discrepancies and increase the relative recovery for various compounds.

Abstract
We report the fabrication of 6-phenylhexylsilane derivatized, sputtered silicon, solid phase microextraction fibers that show parts per trillion detection limits for polyaromatic hydrocarbons, and negligible carry over and phase bleed. Their fabrication involves sputtering silicon on silica fibers under various conditions. Six different fibers were evaluated by generating three different thicknesses of sputtered silicon at two different throw distances, which altered the morphologies of the silicon surfaces. All of the fibers were coated with similar thicknesses of 6-phenylhexylsilane (ca. 2 nm). These fibers were characterized with multiple analytical techniques. The optimum fiber configuration was then used to analyze polyaromatic hydrocarbons via direct immersion, gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Our best fiber for the extraction of low molecular weight polyaromatic hydrocarbons in water had similar performance to that of a commercial fiber. However, our fiber demonstrated ca. 3 times the extraction efficiency for higher molecular weight polyaromatic hydrocarbons. In addition, it outperformed the commercial fiber by showing better linearity, repeatability, and detection limits. A method for analyzing polyaromatic hydrocarbons in baby formula was developed, which showed very good linearity (0.5-125 ppb), repeatability (2-26%), detection limits (0.12-0.81 ppb), and recoveries (103-135%). In addition, our fiber showed much less (negligible) carry over and phase bleed than the commercially available fibers.

Abstract
A temperature-responsive solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating was prepared via in-situ atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. By controlling the temperature of solution below and above the lower critical solution temperature (LCST) of the coating, it can switch between hydrophilic and hydrophobic, thus providing a convenient approach for the selective extraction of analytes with different polarities. The average extraction amount of temperature-responsive coating for polar analytes is about 1.5-fold to that of non-polar ones below LCST, and vice versa. Effective extraction of three biomacromolecules was also obtained by controlling the temperature below or above LCST. The adsorption capacity of the coating for the hydrophilic biomacromolecules at 15 °C is 1.5-2 folds that of 50 °C, whereas the adsorption capacity of the coating to BSA at 50 °C is about 3 folds that of 15 °C. This approach holds great promise for SPME because it provides a simple strategy to prepare bifunctional coatings for various applications.

Abstract
Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) detected in polar environment are recognized tracers of anthropogenic pollution. High sensitivity and selectivity are required for their analysis in ice and snow samples due to the presence at ultra-trace levels. In this study a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method for simultaneous determination of the 16 US-EPA priority pollutant PAHs in polar snow and ice samples was developed and validated. Helical multiwalled carbon nanotubes (HMWCNTs) were proposed for the first time as novel SPME coating. For optimization purposes a Central Composite Design and the multicriteria method of the desirability functions were applied to investigate the influence of extraction parameters, i.e. time and temperature as main factors. The optimal values were 68 °C for the extraction temperature and 60 min for the extraction time. The developed SPME-GC-MS method exhibited detection limits of 16 PAHs in the 0.1-1.2 ng/L range, a repeatability and an intermediate precision within 15% and 22% relative standard deviation, respectively, and good recovery rates in the 93.7 (± 0.1)-119.7 (± 0.2)% range for real spiked water sample, showing better analytical performance compared to commercial PDMS fibers. Enrichment factors in the 2670 (± 290)-142120 (± 580) range were calculated and a long fiber shelf-life with the possibility to reuse the fiber more than 200 times was achieved. Finally, the proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of PAHs in surface snow samples collected in April 2019 at Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard. Its application to the detection of PAHs in samples collected during monitoring campaigns in the polar regions is expected in the near future.

Abstract
Oriented zinc oxide nanosheets (ZnONSs) were directly grown on pretreated nickel-titanium alloy (NiTi) fiber substrates without a traditional seeding layer of ZnO by electrochemical deposition for the first time. The fiber coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry. Direct growth of ZnONSs on the NiTi fiber substrate was dependent on the type of zinc salt. The adsorption performance of the ZnONSs coatings was evaluated using representative aromatic compounds as model analytes together with high performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection. The as-prepared fiber shows higher extraction capability for the selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) than for ultraviolet filters in water samples, and better extraction selectivity for PAHs. For this purpose, the important experimental parameters were optimized for the extraction of PAHs. Under the optimized conditions, the calibration curves are linear in the range of 0.03-200 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients greater than 0.999. Limits of detection ranged from 0.011 μg L-1 to 0.082 μg L-1. Abstract
Nickel-titanium oxide nanotubes (NiTiONTs), nanoparticles, and nanopores were in situ grown on NiTi fiber substrates by controlling anodization parameters. The adsorption performance of different bimetallic oxide nanostructures was evaluated using typical aromatic compounds including chlorophenols, phthalic acid esters, ultraviolet filters (UVFs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) coupled to HPLC-UV. The results clearly indicate that these NiTiO nanostructures show good extraction capability for UVFs and PAHs. The extraction performance of UVFs and PAHs greatly depends on the surface morphologies and sizes of the grown NiTiO nanostructures along with their elemental compositions. Compared with NiTiO nanoparticle and nanopore coatings, the longer well-aligned NiTiONT coating exhibits better extraction capability and selectivity for PAHs than for UVFs. Therefore, the extraction parameters of the NiTi@NiTiONT fiber for PAHs were investigated and optimized. Under optimized conditions, the proposed method was linear in the range 0.05-200 μg L-1 with correlation coefficients above 0.999. Limits of detection were between 0.008 and 0.124 μg L-1. Relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the intra-day and the inter-day analyses with the single fiber varied from 4.09 to 6.33%. RSDs for fiber-to-fiber reproducibility of the proposed method with five fibers prepared in different batches were between 5.75 and 7.43%. The applicability of the proposed method was investigated by the enrichment and determination of target PAHs in environmental water samples and relative recoveries of 84.5 ± 6.5 - 116 ± 7.8% were achieved. Notably, the prepared fiber was stable up to 250 times. Graphical abstract.

Abstract
The exploration of monohydroxy polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) produced by oxidative stress and DNA damage is a powerful and non-invasive tool to study the health risk of exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). A nanocomposite prepared from graphene oxide, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) and polypyrrole was electrodeposited on the internal surface of a stainless-steel tube for online in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) of 8-OHdG, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene and 1-hydroxypyrene from urine. The coating possesses excellent chemical and mechanical stability, high extraction efficiency, good resistance to matrix interference, and a long lifespan. An online IT-SPME-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry method was developed for the determination of these three metabolite biomarkers in human urine. Figures of merit include (a) enrichment factors of 30-48; (b) low limits of detection (4-41 pg·mL-1 at S/N = 3); (c) wide linear ranges (0.05-50 ng·mL-1); (d) good recoveries from spiked samples (71.6-109.5%); and (e) acceptable repeatability (2.3-14.6%). The method offers the advantages of low cost, simplicity, sensitivity, rapidity and automation. Graphical abstract Schematic illustration of online in-tube solid phase microextraction using graphene oxide/poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/polypyrrole composites as adsorbent in a stainless-steel (SS) tube for the enrichment and simultaneous determination of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine, 3-hydroxyphenanthrene and 1-hydroxypyrene prior to HPLC-MS analysis.

Abstract
Carbon sheets were attached to magnetite (Fe3O4) nanoparticles. The resulting nanocomposite is shown to be a viable sorbent for use in magnetic dispersive solid-phase microextraction of three organophosphorus pesticides. The sorbent was synthesized via the sol-gel process followed by calcination and was characterized by an X-ray diffractometer, field emission scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Raman spectrometry techniques. The affecting parameters in the adsorption and desorption steps were assessed and optimized via response surface methodology. Following desorption with dichloromethane, the OPPs were quantified by gas chromatography along with ion mobility spectrometry detection. Under optimized conditions, the limits of detection were 1.00, 0.46 and 0.85 μg L-1 for fenthion, malathion and chlorpyrifos, respectively. Response is linear in the concentration range of 2-500 μg L-1 for fenthion and malathion, and 2-1000 μg L-1 for chlorpyrifos with the determination coefficient larger than 0.9969. The intra-day and inter-day precision were from 3 to 9% and 5 to 16%, respectively. The enrichment factor was greater than 142 for all the studied pesticides. The sorbent was used for analyze spiked water and vegetable samples and gave relative recovery higher than 82%. Abstract
Mesoporous silica with hexagonal type structure containing amine functional group was introduced. Firstly, aminopropyl hexagonal mesoporous silica was synthetized in a co-condensation process, via templating route of n-dodecylamine. Then synthesized mesoporous material were characterized, and FT-IR spectrum confirmed the presence of amine group and CHN analysis determined the amount of organic layer. The high surface area (750 m2/g) was determined by applying nitrogen adsorption-desorption technique. The morphology was examined by scanning electron microscopy which proved hexagonal structure. The crystallinity of mesoporous material was observed in XRD pattern of this material. According to previous background of such material in adsorbing drug, herein, the efficiency of this material in adsorbing of 5-fluorouracil was evaluated through solid phase extraction method in aqueous and plasma media with high performance liquid chromatography. The extraction efficiency was evaluated for drug concentrations of 500-2000 ng/ml by means of 5-20 mg/ml hexagonal mesoporous silica in both media. Abstract
The exploration of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) produced by cell lines may be a powerful and non-invasive tool for the study of the health risk of human exposure to atmospheric particulate matter (PM). In this work, we developed a sensitive solid phase microextraction-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry method (SPME-GC-MS) to analyze VOCs in breathed gas of PM2.5-induced human embryonic fibroblast cell line (MRC-5). A novel graphene oxide/polyaniline/polydopamine (GO/PANI/PDA) coating was prepared on a stainless steel wire via electrochemical deposition and self-polymerization for the first time. The GO/PANI/PDA coating exhibited high extraction efficiency, good thermal stability (> 380 ℃), excellent mechanical stability as well as long service time (> 150 times). Parameters that may affect the results were optimized systematically. Under the optimal conditions, VOCs including benzene series, aldehydes and alkane were detected with low limit of detection (0.2-2.0 μg L-1) and good correlation (correlation coefficients above 0.9922). The relative standard deviations of within-day and between-day were 1.1-8.4% and 0.2-11.2%, respectively. Satisfactory recoveries of 82-117% indicated good repeatability of the method. The method has been successfully applied for the determination of target VOCs in the headspace gas of PM2.5-induced MRC-5 cell. And it is expected to provide an alternative tool for the study of cytotoxicology of atmospheric particulates.

Abstract
A simple, rapid, and reliable headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) procedure, reinforced by applying vacuum in the extraction vial, was developed. It was applied for the extraction of nicotine in solid samples prior to determination by gas chromatography-flame ionization detection (GC-FID). First, the surface of a narrow stainless steel wire was made porous and adhesive by platinization to obtain a durable, higher surface area, and resistant fiber. Then, a thin film of sulfonated graphene/polyaniline (Sulf-G/PANI) nanocomposite was synthesized and simultaneously coated on the platinized fiber using the electrophoretic deposition (EPD) method. It was demonstrated that the extraction efficiency remarkably increased by applying the reduced-pressure condition in the extraction vial. To evaluate the conventional HS-SPME and vacuum-assisted HS-SPME (VA-HS-SPME) platforms, all experimental parameters affecting the extraction efficiency including desorption time and temperature, extraction time and temperature and moisture content of sample matrix were optimized. The highest extraction efficiency was obtained at 60°C, 10min (extraction temperature and time) and 280°C, 2min (desorption condition), for VA-HS-SPME strategy, while for conventional HS-SPME the extraction and desorption conditions found to be 100°C, 30min and 280°C, 2min, respectively. The Sulf-G/PANI coated fiber showed high thermal stability, good chemical/mechanical resistance, and long lifetime. For analysis of nicotine in solid samples using VA-HS-SPME-GC-FID, linear dynamic range (LDR) was 0.01-30μgg-1 (R2=0.996), the relative standard deviation (RSD%, n=6), for analyses of 1μgg-1 nicotine was calculated 3.4% and limit of detection (LOD) found to be 0.002μgg-1. The VA-HS-SPME-GC-FID strategy was successfully carried out for quantitation of nicotine in hair and tobacco real samples.

Abstract
The development of new support and geometries of solid phase microextraction (SPME), including metal fiber assemblies, coated-tip, and thin film microextraction (TFME) (i.e. self-supported, fabric and blade supported), as well as their effects on diffusion and extraction rate of analytes were discussed in the current review. Application of main techniques widely used for preparation of a variety of coating materials of SPME, including sol-gel technique, electrochemical and electrospinning methods as well as the available commercial coatings, were presented. Advantages and limitations of each technique from several aspects, such as range of application, biocompatibility, availability in different geometrical configurations, method of preparation, incorporation of various materials to tune the coating properties, and thermal and physical stability, were also investigated. Future perspectives of each technique to improve the efficiency and stability of the coatings were also summarized. Some interesting materials including ionic liquids (ILs), metal organic frameworks (MOFs) and particle loaded coatings were briefly presented.
