Electrochemical monitoring of persistent toxic substances using metal oxide and its composite nanomaterials: Design, preparation, and application

Phosphorus-doped synergy of phase change in heterogeneous catalysts of NiS-NiS2 for efficient electrocatalysis of Pb(II)

A fundamental understanding of the electroanalytical activity of transition metal sulfide electrocatalysts, especially the origin of the electrocatalytic reactivity on the surface sites of heterostructures with multiple crystalline phases, is essential for the design of low-cost and highly efficient nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for further scientific and technological achievements. Herein, we injected P into NiS and occupied the S sites through a doping strategy. The redistributed electronic structure induced the construction of heterostructures, which significantly improved the structure and chemical state of electrochemically inert NiS. The phase-change mechanism between NiS and NiS2 synergistically catalyzes Pb(II), while the P and S sites jointly lose electrons. Moreover, the constructed heterojunction sensor shows the a sensitivity of 83.43 μA μM-1 to Pb(II) with a theoretical limit of detection of 48 nM, as well as excellent stability, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability. The accurate detection in real water further reveals the potential of this sensor for practical applications. This study provides a guiding strategy for improving electrochemically inert materials to design highly active electrocatalytic interfaces, which has important implications for the development of highly efficient electrode-sensitive materials similar to precious metals to achieve accurate electrical analysis.

Voltammetric Sensor Based on the Combination of Tin and Cerium Dioxide Nanoparticles with Surfactants for Quantification of Sunset Yellow FCF

Sunset Yellow FCF (SY FCF) is one of the widely used synthetic azo dyes in the food industry whose content has to be controlled for safety reasons. Electrochemical sensors are a promising tool for this type of task. A voltammetric sensor based on a combination of tin and cerium dioxide nanoparticles (SnO2-CeO2 NPs) with surfactants has been developed for SY FCF determination. The synergetic effect of both types of NPs has been confirmed. Surfactants of various natures (sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), Brij® 35, and hexadecylpyridinium bromide (HDPB)) have been tested as dispersive media. The best effects, i.e., the highest oxidation currents of SY FCF, have been observed in the case of HDPB. The sensor demonstrates a 4.5-fold-higher electroactive surface area and a 38-fold-higher electron transfer rate compared to the bare glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrooxidation of SY FCF is an irreversible, two-electron, diffusion-driven process involving proton transfer. In differential pulse mode in Britton-Robinson buffer (BRB) pH 2.0, the sensor gives a linear response to SY FCF from 0.010 to 1.0 μM and from 1.0 to 100 μM with an 8.0 nM detection limit. The absence of an interferent effect from other typical food components and colorants has been shown. The sensor has been tested on soft drinks and validated with the standard chromatographic method.

Novel and Highly Sensitive Electrochemical Sensor for the Determination of Oxytetracycline Based on Fluorine-Doped Activated Carbon and Hydrophobic Deep Eutectic Solvents

Residues of oxytetracycline (OTC), a veterinary antibiotic and growth promoter, can be present in animal-derived foods; their consumption is harmful to human health and their presence must therefore be detected and regulated. However, the maximum residue limit is low, and consequently highly sensitive and accurate detectors are required to detect the residues. In this study, a novel highly sensitive electrochemical sensor for the detection of OTC was developed using a screen-printed electrode modified with fluorine-doped activated carbon (F-AC/SPE) combined with a novel deep eutectic solvent (DES). The modification of activated carbon by doping with fluorine atoms (F-AC) enhanced the adsorption and electrical activity of the activated carbon. The novel hydrophobic DES was prepared from tetrabutylammonium bromide (TBABr) and a fatty acid (malonic acid) using a green synthesis method. The addition of the DES increased the electrochemical response of F-AC for OTC detection; furthermore, it induced preconcentration of OTC, which increased its detectability. The electrostatic interactions between DES and OTC as well as the adsorption of OTC on the surface of the modified electrode through H-bonding and π-π interactions helped in OTC detection, which was quantified based on the decrease in the anodic peak potential (E _pa = 0.3 V) of AC. The electrochemical behavior of the modified electrode was investigated by cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Under optimum conditions, the calibration plot of OTC exhibited a linear response in the range 5-1500 μg L^-1, with a detection limit of 1.74 μg L^-1. The fabricated electrochemical sensor was successfully applied to determine the OTC in shrimp pond and shrimp samples with recoveries of 83.8-100.5% and 93.3-104.5%, respectively. In addition to the high sensitivity of OTC detection, the proposed electrochemical sensor is simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.

General Strategies to Construct Highly Efficient Sensing Interfaces for Metal Ions Detection from the Perspective of Catalysis

Constructing high-effective electrode sensing interfaces has been considered an effective method for electrochemical detection toward heavy metal ions (HMIs). However, most research has been devoted to enhancing the stripping currents of HMIs by simply improving the adsorptive capacity and conductivity of the electrode modified materials, while lacking theoretical guidelines in fabricating catalytic sensing interfaces. Besides, the understanding of detection mechanisms is quite unscientific from the perspective of catalysis. This perspective summarizes five general strategies in designing highly efficient sensing interfaces in the recent five years, including modulating crystal phases, orientations and planes, defect engineering, ionic valence state cycle engineering, adsorption in situ catalysis strategy, and construction of atomic level catalytic active sites. What's more, the catalytic mechanisms for improving the signals of HMIs, such as boosting the electron transfer rates and conversion rates, lowering the energy barriers, etc., are introduced and emphasized. This study has a great significance in directionally controlling functionalized electrochemical sensors to achieve excellent sensitivity and selectivity in detecting environmental pollutants from the view of catalysis, and it also brings enlightenments and guidance to develop new electroanalytical methods.

A review on recent advances in the applications of composite Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles in the food industry

Fe3O4 magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their superparamagnetic properties, large specific surface area, high biocompatibility, non-toxicity, large-scale production, and recyclability. More importantly, numerous hydroxyl groups (-OH) on the surface of Fe3O4 MNPs can provide coupling sites for various modifiers, forming versatile nanocomposites for applications in the energy, biomedicine, and environmental fields. With the development of science and technology, the potential of nanotechnology in the food industry has also gradually become prominent. However, the application of composite Fe3O4 MNPs in the food industry has not been systematically summarized. Herein, this article reviews composite Fe3O4 MNPs, including their properties, modifications, and physical functions, as well as their applications in the entire food industry from production to processing, storage, and detection. This review lays a solid foundation for promoting food innovation and improving food quality and safety.

Recent advances on rapid detection and remediation of environmental pollutants utilizing nanomaterials-based (bio)sensors

Environmental safety has become a significant issue for the safety of living species, humans, and the ecosystem as a consequence of the harmful and detrimental consequences of various pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, dyes, etc., emitted into the surroundings. To resolve this issue, various efforts, legal acts, scientific and technological perspectives have been embraced, but still remain a global concern. Furthermore, due to non-portability, complex detection, and inappropriate on-site recognition of sophisticated laboratory tools, the real-time analysis of these environmental contaminants has been limited. As a result of innovative nano bioconjugation and nanofabrication techniques, nanotechnology enables enhanced nanomaterials (NMs) based (bio)sensors demonstrating ultra-sensitivity and a short detection time in real-time analysis, as well as superior sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity have been developed. Several researchers have demonstrated the potent detection of pollutants such as Hg²⁺ ion by the usage of AgNP-MD in electronic and optoelectronic methods with a detection limit of 5-45 μM which is quite significant. Taking into consideration of such tremendous research, herein, the authors have highlighted 21st-century strategies towards NMs based biosensor technology for pollutants detection, including nano biosensors, enzyme-based biosensors, electrochemical-based biosensors, carbon-based biosensors and optical biosensors for on-site identification and detection of target analytes. This article will provide a brief overview of the significance of utilizing NMs-based biosensors for the detection of a diverse array of hazardous pollutants, and a thorough understanding of the detection processes of NMs-based biosensors, as well as the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values, rendering researchers to focus on the world's need for a sustainable earth.

An "on-off" ratio photoluminescence sensor based on catalytically induced PET effect by Fe3O4 NPs for the determination of coumarin

Herein, using Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (Fe₃O₄ NPs) as a magnetic artificial peroxidase, an "on-off" ratiometric photoluminescence sensor with high-sensitivity and high-selectivity for coumarin was constructed based on photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between 7-hydroxycoumarin and rhodamine B (RB). The results showed that Fe₃O₄ NPs catalyzed H₂O₂ to generate nucleophilic group ·OH, which attacked the active site of coumarin and produced strong fluorescent 7-hydroxycoumarin molecules. Then, the fluorescence of RB was quenched with 7-hydroxycoumarin through the PET effect. The ratio signal generated in the above process was used for the quantitative detection of coumarin. Under optimized conditions, the linear range 0.5-25 mg/L was acquired for coumarin with the detection limit of 0.016 mg/L. This method had excellent selectivity and the recovery rate was 81.8%-106.8% with the relative standard deviation less than 5.6%, so it can be used for the quantitative analysis of coumarin in complex matrix samples.

Cobalt encapsulated in bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotubes for highly sensitive electroanalysis of Pb(II): enhancement based on adsorption and catalysis

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are recognized as desirable candidates to fabricate electrochemical sensing interfaces owing to their high surface area and excellent electron conductivity. However, the poor catalytic properties of CNTs significantly hinder their further application in electrochemical detection. Herein, for the first time we combined defective CNTs with catalytically active cobalt nanoparticles (Co NPs) to give cobalt encapsulated in a bamboo-like N-doped carbon nanotube nanocomposite (Co/N-CNTs). The novel constructed Co/N-CNTs are used as a modifier on a bare glass carbon electrode for the electrochemical detection of Pb(ii). As a result, the positive effect of adsorption and catalysis on Co/N-CNT shows a significant improvement in the electroanalytical performance towards Pb(ii) with a sensitivity of 69.74 μA μM-1 and a limit of detection of 0.039 μM. Moreover, the stability and practical applications of Co/N-CNTs towards Pb(ii) in real water samples obtained from a mining subsidence area were also considered. This method shows great promise, achieving an outstanding electroanalysis efficiency with noble-metal-free nanocomposite sensors based on the combination of carbon and transition metals.

Nanocomposites for Electrochemical Sensors and Their Applications on the Detection of Trace Metals in Environmental Water Samples

The elevated concentrations of various trace metals beyond existing guideline recommendations in water bodies have promoted research on the development of various electrochemical nanosensors for the trace metals' early detection. Inspired by the exciting physical and chemical properties of nanomaterials, advanced functional nanocomposites with improved sensitivity, sensitivity and stability, amongst other performance parameters, have been synthesized, characterized, and applied on the detection of various trace metals in water matrices. Nanocomposites have been perceived as a solution to address a critical challenge of distinct nanomaterials that are limited by agglomerations, structure stacking leading to aggregations, low conductivity, and limited porous structure for electrolyte access, amongst others. In the past few years, much effort has been dedicated to the development of various nanocomposites such as; electrochemical nanosensors for the detection of trace metals in water matrices. Herein, the recent progress on the development of nanocomposites classified according to their structure as carbon nanocomposites, metallic nanocomposites, and metal oxide/hydroxide nanocomposites is summarized, alongside their application as electrochemical nanosensors for trace metals detection in water matrices. Some perspectives on the development of smart electrochemical nanosensors are also introduced.

Geochemical and Physicochemical Characteristics of Clay Materials from Congo with Photocatalytic Activity on 4-Nitrophenol in Aqueous Solutions

This study investigated the geochemical and physicochemical characteristics of natural clay collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The optical properties of the sample collected in Golf (GOL) were tested in the removal of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous solution. The geochemical analysis depicted that all the samples are plotted within the shale quadrant. Furthermore, the Chemical Index of Alteration (CIA) indicated that the samples are extremely weathered. The particle size distribution ranged from 0.41 to 418.6 μm, while the pore diameters for all the samples were under 100 Å. A flake-like surface morphology was observed in all the samples. SiO₂, Al₂O₃, Fe₂O₃, K₂O, and TiO₂ were the major chemical compounds found in all the samples, while the XRD analysis showed the presence of quartz, kaolinite, magnetite, and illite. The presence of metal oxides (i.e., TiO₂ and Fe₂O₃) indicated that these natural clays can be used for photocatalytic oxidation of pollutants. The sample collected in Katuba (KAT) displayed the higher reflectance percentages for the selected wavelengths except at 200 nm. Interestingly, the GOL sample exhibited lower energy band gaps (2.68 and 3.94 eV) necessary for photocatalysis. The untreated GOL clay sample removed 99.13% of 4-nitrophenol from aqueous solution through the photodegradation process. The usage of the untreated GOL clay could be a cost-effective solution in the removal of 4-nitrophenol in wastewater.
