Abstract
The greater and more widespread use of chemicals, either from industry or daily use, is leading to an increase in the discharge of these substances into the environment. Some of these are known to be hazardous to humans and the environment and are regulated, but there is a large and increasing number of substances which pose a potential risk even at low concentration and are not controlled. In this context, new techniques and methodologies are being developed to deal with this concern. Miniaturized liquid chromatography (LC) emerges as a greener and more sensitive alternative to conventional LC. Furthermore, advances in instrument miniaturization have made possible the development of portable LC instrumentation which may become a promising tool for in-situ monitoring. This work reviews the environmental applications of miniaturized LC over the last 15 years and discusses the different instrumentation, including off- and on-line pretreatment techniques, chromatographic conditions, and contributions to the environmental knowledge.

Abstract
Gelatin is a water-soluble protein obtained from the collagen of various animal origins (porcine, bovine, fish, donkey, horse, and deer hide) and has diverse applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetics industries. Porcine and bovine gelatins are extensively used in food and non-food products; however, their acceptance is limited due to religious prohibitions, whereas fish gelatin is accepted in all religions. In Southeast Asia, especially in China, gelatin obtained from donkey and deer skins is used in medicines. However, both sources suffer from adulteration (mixing different sources of gelatin) due to their limited availability and high cost. Unclear labeling and limited information about actual gelatin sources in gelatin-containing products cause serious concern among societies for halal and fraud authentication of gelatin sources. Therefore, authenticating gelatin sources in gelatin-based products is challenging due to close similarities between the composition differences and degradation of DNA and protein biomarkers in processed gelatin. Thus, different methods have been proposed to identify and quantify different gelatin sources in pharmaceutical and food products. To the best of our knowledge, this systematic and comprehensive review highlights different authentication techniques and their limitations in gelatin detection and quantification in various commercial products. This review also describes halal authentication and adulteration prevention strategies of various gelatin sources, mainly focussing on research gaps, challenges, and future directions in this research area.

Abstract
Traditional oil quality measurement is mostly based on chemical indicators such as acid value, peroxide value, and p-anisidine value. This process requires specialized knowledge and involves complex steps. Hence, this study designs and proposes a Sesame Oil Quality Assessment Service Platform, which is composed of an Intelligent Sesame Oil Evaluator (ISO Evaluator) and a Cloud Service Platform. Users can quickly assess the quality of sesame oil using this platform. The ISO Evaluator employs Artificial Intelligence of Things (AIoT) sensors to detect changes in volatile gases and the color of the oil during storage. It utilizes deep learning mechanisms, including Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) to determine and evaluate the quality of the sesame oil. Evaluation results demonstrate that the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) value is 95.13. The MQ2, MQ3, MQ4, MQ7, and MQ8 sensors have a positive correlation. The CNN combined with an ANN model achieves a Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) of 8.1820% for predicting oil quality, while the LSTM model predicts future variations in oil quality indicators with a MAPE of 0.44%. Finally, the designed Sesame Oil Quality Assessment Service Platform effectively addresses issues related to digitization, quality measurement, supply quality observation, and scalability.

Abstract
Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry is widely used in the field of proteomic analysis after off-line protein digestion. On-line digestion with chromatographic column connected in a series with immobilized enzymatic reactor is not often used approach. In this work we investigated the impact of chromatographic conditions on the protein digestion efficiency. The investigation of trypsin reactor activity was performed by on-line digestion of N-α-benzoyl-L-arginine 4-nitroanilide hydrochloride (BAPNA), followed by separation of the digests on the mixed-mode column. Two trypsin column reactors with the different trypsin coverage on the bridged ethylene hybrid particles were evaluated. To ensure optimal trypsin activity, the separation temperature was set at 37.0 °C and the pH of the mobile phase buffer was maintained at 8.5. The on-line digestion itself ongoing during the initial state of gradient was carried out at a low flow rate using a mobile phase that was free of organic modifiers. Proteins such as cytochrome C, enolase, and myoglobin were successfully digested on-line without prior reduction or alkylation, and the resulting peptides were separated using a mixed-mode column. Additionally, proteins that contain multiple cysteines, such as α-lactalbumin, albumin, β-lactoglobulin A, and conalbumin, were also successfully digested on-line (after reduction and alkylation). Moreover, trypsin immobilized enzymatic reactors were utilized for over 300 injections without any noticeable loss of digestion activity.

Abstract
An analytical method was developed and validated for the analysis of four priority perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), namely, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) in food products using nanoscale liquid chromatography (nano-LC) coupled with nanoscale electrospray ionization (nano-ESI) and Orbitrap mass spectrometry (Orbitrap-MS) detection. The efficiency of two different nano-LC setups for chromatographic separation of selected PFAS was evaluated. The optimal LC separation of analytes was achieved using a reversed phase C18 (RP-C18) nano bore column with an integrated emitter. The effect of matrix concentration factor on signal suppression/enhancement was evaluated for different matrices. The method validation indicated analyte recoveries in the range 83-118% and within-laboratory reproducibility from 7 to 18%, while reanalysis of the materials from proficiency tests (PTs) showed that the accuracy of the obtained concentrations ranged from 85 to 124% of the provided consensus values. The method limits of quantification (m-LOQs) were set as first validation levels ranging from 0.001 to 0.3 ng g-1 sample depending on the type of the food group. The observed method performance characteristics met the criteria stated in Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/1428, Commission Recommendation (EU) 2022/1431, as well as Guidance Document on Analytical Parameters for the Determination of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) in Food and Feed with regards to the compliance testing of PFAS maximum levels (MLs) and monitoring purposes. The elaborated method was applied for the analysis of selected priority PFAS in different food groups collected from the Latvian retail market.

Abstract
Monolithic poly(2-vinylnaphthalene-co-divinylbenzene) columns were introduced, for the first time, and were evaluated as the separation media for nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC). These columns were prepared by in-situ polymerization of 2-vinylnaphthalene (2-VNA) as the functional monomer and divinylbenzene (DVB) as the crosslinker in a fused silica capillary column of 50 µm i.d. Various porogenic solvents, including tetrahydrofuran (THF), dodecanol and toluene were used for morphology optimization. Final monolithic column (referred to as VNA column) was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chromatographic analyses. Alkylbenzenes (ABs), and polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were separated using the VNA column while the column offered excellent hydrophobic and π-π interactions under reversed-phase conditions. Theoretical plates number up to 41,200 plates/m in isocratic mode for ethylbenzene could be achieved. The potential of the final VNA column was demonstrated with a gradient elution in the separation of six intact proteins, including ribonuclease A (RNase A), cytochrome C (Cyt C), lysozyme (Lys), β-lactoglobulin (β-lac), myoglobin (My) and α-chymotrypsinogen (α-chym) in nano LC system. The column was then applied to the peptide analysis of trypsin digested cytochrome C, allowing a high peak capacity up to 1440 and the further proteomics analysis of COS-7 cell line was attempted applying the final monolithic column in nano-LC UV system.

Abstract
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vital substance found throughout body. It helps convert food into energy and is eaten small amounts in foods. CoQ10 has gained great interest in recent years as a potential candidate for the treatment of various diseases. The content of CoQ10 in food samples is a crucial quality index for foods. Therefore, the development of sensitive separation and quantification method for determining the amount of CoQ10 in various samples, especially in foods, is an important issue, especially for food nutrition. In this study, a new, miniaturized monolithic column was developed and applied for the determination of CoQ10 in pistachio samples by nano-liquid chromatography (nano-LC). The monolithic column with a 50 µm i.d. was prepared by in situ polymerization using laurylmethacrylate (LMA) as the main monomer and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) as the crosslinker. Methanol (MeOH) and polyethyleneglycol (PEG) were used as porogenic solvents. The final monolithic column was characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chromatographic analyses. The monolithic column with a 50 µm i.d. was applied to the analysis of CoQ10 in pistachio samples in nano-LC. This analytical method was validated by means of sensitivity, linearity, precision, recovery, and repeatability. The LOD and LOQ values were 0.05 and 0.48 µg/kg, respectively. The developed method using the monolithic column was optimized to achieve very sensitive analyses of CoQ10 content in the food samples. The applicability of the method was successfully demonstrated by the analysis of CoQ10 in pistachio samples.

Abstract
In the present study, a new micellar nano LC-UV was, for the first time, reported for the separation and determination of five anions (chloride, nitrite, bromide, sulfate and nitrate) in 52 honey samples. Based on this approach, a graphene oxide-based monolithic column was prepared and applied for the samples. Various amounts of hexadecyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide (HTAB) in the mobile phase were used in order to optimize the separation conditions. The baseline separation was achieved using mobile phase with 25/75% (v/v) ACN/10 mM phosphate buffer at pH 3.4, while the amount of HTAB was optimized as 0.22 mM in the mobile phase. The whole method was validated and it leads to high sensitivity. The LOD values were found in the range of 0.02-0.22 µg/kg, while LOQ values were found in the range of 0.06-0.18 µg/kg. The method allowed to achieve sensitivity analyses of anionic content in 52 honey samples. All data were evaluated using a new algorithm for geographic origin discrimination. K-nearest neighbor algorithm (K-NN), cubic support vector classifier (K-DVS), and K-Mean cluster analysis were used for geographic origin discrimination of honeys. The accuracy of the whole model was calculated as 94.4% with the K-DVS method. The samples from five provinces were classified 100% correctly, while two of them were classified with one misclassification, with an accuracy of 89.9% and 83.3%, respectively. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The new platforms and advanced technologies are crucial for advanced food analysis. In this article, a novel methodology was attempted for the determination of geographic origin of 52 honey samples. In this sense, micellar nano LC technique with a homemade monolithic nano-column was, for the first time, applied for the anion analysis using a new algorithm.

Abstract
A new feature of hydrophobic fumed silica nanoparticles (HFSNPs) when they apply to the preparation of monolithic nano-columns using narrow monolithic fused silica capillary columns (e.g., 50-µm inner diameter) was presented. The monolithic nano-columns were synthesized by an in-situ polymerization using butyl methacrylate (BMA) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) at various concentrations of AEROSIL®R972, called HFSNPs. Dimethyl formamide (DMF) and water were used as the porogenic solvents. These columns (referred to as HFSNP monoliths) were successfully characterized by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and reversed-phase nano-LC using alkylbenzenes and polyaromatic hydrocarbons as solute probes. The reproducibility values based on run-to-run, column-to-column and batch-to-batch were found as 2.3%, 2.48% and 2.99% (n = 3), respectively. The optimized column also indicated promising hydrophobic interactions under reversed-phase conditions, while the feasibility of the column allowed high efficiency and high throughput nano-LC separations. The potential of the final HFSNP monolith in relation to intact protein separation was successfully demonstrated using six intact proteins, including ribonuclease A, cytochrome C, carbonic anhydrase isozyme II, lysozyme, myoglobin, and α-chymotrypsinogen A in nano-LC. The results showed that HFSNP-based monolithic nanocolumns are promising materials and are powerful tools for sensitive separations.

Abstract
Chloramphenicol (CAP) is an effective antibiotic with broad spectrum against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, while it is used to treat various infections in animals. Although CAP is banned for usage in the livestock products including, milk, honey, seafood, and royal jelly, CAP is still often detected in foods of animal origin, posing a threat to consumer health. The use of CAP is restricted in many countries due to its side effect in human metabolic process according to the Expert Committee on Food Additives (ECFA) recommendation. Chloramphenicol glucuronide (CAPG) is also a metabolic product of CAP, which may be a hazardous chemical for human health. Therefore, the development of sensitive separation and quantification method is an important issue, especially for food safety. Herein, we reported the preparation and application of a monolithic nano-column for CAP and CAPG analyses in foods by ProFlow Nano liquid chromatography (ProFlow Nano LC). The monolithic nano-column was prepared by an in situ polymerization using 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate (HPMA-Cl) and ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA) and followed graphene oxide (GO) modification. After characterization, the monolithic nano-column was used for the analysis of CAP and CAPG in honey and milk samples by ProFlow Nano LC. The whole method was validated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, precision, recovery, and repeatability, while it led to obtain high sensitivity with limit of quantification was found as 0.02 µg/kg for CAP. Limit of quantification for CAPG was found as 0.08 µg/kg. The developed method with monolithic nano-column was optimized to achieve very sensitive analyses of CAP and CAPG in the food samples. The applicability of the nano-column was successfully demonstrated by the analysis of CAP and CAPG in milk and honey samples. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: This article describes the preparation and application of a monolithic nano-column for the separation and determination of chloramphenicol and chloramphenicol glucuronide in food samples by ProFlow Nano LC. The use of new and advanced techniques is a crucial issue in the food science and technology. In this sense, this study demonstrated a new food analysis method using advanced instrumental technique with a homemade monolithic nano-column.

Abstract
小型化是液相色谱分离技术发展的重要趋势之一,包括仪器外形尺寸的小型化、分离材料粒径的小型化以及色谱柱内径的小型化。色谱柱内径的减小能够降低样品和流动相的消耗,具有更高的质量灵敏度,特别适合用于复杂样品体系的分离分析。纳升液相色谱一般是指使用内径小于100 μm的毛细管色谱柱,流速范围在每分钟几十至几百纳升的色谱技术。由于流速很低,色谱柱体积很小,柱外效应显著,因此对色谱仪器系统各个模块的性能以及系统柱外效应的优化提出了较高的要求。纳升液相色谱的输液装置需要能够准确稳定地输送纳升级流速,具有梯度输液模式,且拥有一定的耐压能力,以适应不同规格的色谱柱类型;进样装置需要能够进行准确重复的进样过程,进样体积及进样方式适合毛细管色谱柱,同时不产生明显的柱外效应;检测装置需要具有较高的灵敏度,且具有较小的柱外扩散;管路与连接系统需要稳定、可靠、易操作,并能够最大限度地减小柱外体积,适配纳升级流速。鉴于目前大多数纳升液相色谱系统与质谱检测器联用,因而本文主要从输液装置、进样装置、管路与连接3个方面对相关技术领域的研究论文、技术专利以及仪器厂商的宣传文件等进行了检索与归纳,综述了这些模块的技术路线与研究进展,同时简要介绍光学吸收型检测装置的优化思路与研究进展,并对部分商品化的纳升液相色谱系统进行了对比。

Abstract
Herein, we report the preparation and application of a new nano-structured monolithic nanocolumn based on modified graphene oxide using narrow fused silica capillary column (e.g., 50 μm internal diameter). The nanocolumn was prepared by an in situ polymerization using butyl methacrylate, ethylene dimethacrylate, and methacryloyl graphene oxide nanoparticles. Dimethyl formamide and water were used as the porogenic solvent. After polymerization, the obtained nanocolumn was coated with dimethyloctadecylchlorosilane in order to enhance the hydrophobicity. Both isocratic and gradient nano-liquid chromatographic separations for small molecules (e.g., alkylbenzenes) and macromolecules (e.g., intact proteins) were performed. Theoretical plates number up to 3600 plates/m in isocratic mode for propylbenzene were achieved. It was demonstrated that the feasibility of graphene oxide modified monolithic nanocolumn for high-efficiency and high-throughput nanoscale proteomics analysis. The high resolving power of monolithic nanocolumn yielded sensitive protein separation with narrower peak width while a high-resolution analysis of peptides from trypsin-digested cytochrome C could be obtained. Graphene oxide based monolithic nanocolumns are promising and can allow to powerful tools for trace proteom sample analysis.

Abstract
This work presents a revision of the main applications of capillary electromigration methods in food analysis and Foodomics. Articles that were published during the period February 2019-February 2021 are included. The work shows the multiple CE methods that have been developed and applied to analyze different types of molecules in foods. Namely, CE methods have been applied to analyze amino acids, biogenic amines, carbohydrates, chiral compounds, contaminants, DNAs, food additives, heterocyclic amines, lipids, secondary metabolites, peptides, pesticides, phenols, pigments, polyphenols, proteins, residues, toxins, vitamins, small organic and inorganic compounds, as well as other minor compounds. The last results on the use of CE for monitoring food interactions and food processing, including recent microchips developments and new applications of CE in Foodomics, are discussed too. The new procedures of CE to investigate food quality and safety, nutritional value, storage and bioactivity are also included in the present review work.

Abstract
The physiological and toxicological evaluation of nano-silicon dioxide (nano-SiO2) particles in food is important for ensuring food safety. In this study, nano-SiO2 particles isolated from five brands of instant coffee, were structurally characterized using transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential analyses. Their toxicity was assessed by measuring cell viability, membrane integrity, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in model gastrointestinal cells (GES-1 and Caco-2). Additionally, mortality, deformity rate, heart rate and death of whole zebra fish embryos were measured. The five types of nano-SiO2 samples comprised amorphous particles with a purity of approximately 99%, which met the food additive standard. Considering that the original particle size ranged from 10 to 50 nm, the samples were classified as nano-SiO2 food additives. Nano-SiO2 did not significantly impact the activity of GES-1 or Caco-2 cells, and no significant cell membrane damage was observed (Caco-2 cells exhibited mild micro damage); however, a slight increase in intracellular RPS levels was detected. Moreover, nano-SiO2 was found to cause head deformity, pericardial edema, yolk sac edema and tail bending. Collectively, the results show that nano-SiO2 time- and dose-dependently affects GES-1 and Caco-2 cell viability, as well as the mortality, heart rate, and abnormality rate of zebra fish embryos. Specifically, a high concentration (≥ 200 μg/mL) and long exposure time (≥ 48 h) of food additive nano-SiO2 affected GES-1, Caco-2 cells, and the gastrointestinal tract in zebra fish embryos.

Abstract
Nano-liquid chromatography (nanoLC) has proven itself as a powerful tool and its scope entails various applications in (bio)analytical fields. Operation at low (nL/min) flow rates in combination with reduced inner dimensions (ID < 100 µm), leads to significantly enhanced sensitivity when coupled with electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS). Challenges that remain for the routine implementation of such miniaturized setups are related to clogging of the system and robustness in general, and thus the application of tedious sample preparation steps. To improve ruggedness, a filter placed upstream in the LC prevents particles from entering and clogging the system. This so-called online automatic filtration and filter back-flush (AFFL) system was combined with nanoLC and the direct injection principle for the sensitive confirmatory analysis of fifty different doping-relevant peptides in urine. The presented assay was fully validated for routine purposes according to selectivity and matrix interference, limit of identification (LOI), carryover, matrix effect, sample extract stability, analysis of educational external quality assessment (EQAS) samples, robustness of the online AFFL-setup and retention time stability. It was also fully compliant with the most recent minimum required performance levels (MRPL) and chromatographic/mass spectrometric identification criteria (IDCR), as imposed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In the absence of labor-intensive sample preparation, the application of AFFL allowed for the injection of diluted urine samples without any noticeable pressure buildup in the nanoLC system. Contrary to earlier observations by our group and others, the addition of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) to the mobile phase did not enhance sensitivity in the presented nanoflow setup, yet was beneficial to reduce carry over. Although the robustness of the presented setup was evaluated only for the analysis of diluted urine samples, it is entirely conceivable that routine applications employing other matrices and currently running on analytical scale LC instruments could be transferred to micro/nanoLC scale systems to reach lower detection limits.

Abstract
In this study, graphene oxide-octadecylsilane incorporated monolithic nano-columns were developed for protein analysis by nano liquid chromatography (nano LC). The monolithic column with 100 μm id was first prepared by an in situ polymerization using ethylene dimethacrylate (EDMA), 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropylmethacrylate (HPMA-Cl), and methacryloyl graphene oxide nanoparticles (MGONPs). MGONPs were synthesized by the treatment of 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propylmethacrylate (TMSPM) and GO. Tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dodecanol were used as the porogenic solvent. The resulting column was functionalized by dimethyloctadecylch lorosilane (DODCS) for the enhancement of hydrophobicity. The functionalization greatly improved the baseline separation of hydrophobic compounds such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The optimized monolith with respect to total polymerization mixture was characterized by using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) X-ray diffraction (XRD) and chromatographic analyses. The blank monoliths without functionalization exhibited poor separation while a good separation performance of MGONPs functionalized monoliths was achieved. The monolith with 100 μm id was evaluated in protein separation in nano LC using RNase A, Cytochrome C, Lysozyme, Trypsin, and Ca isozyme II as the test proteins. It was shown that protein separation mechanism was based on large π-system of GO and hydrophobicity of the monolithic structure. Theoretical plates number up to 57 600 plates were achieved. The nano-column with 50 μm id was also prepared using the same polymerization mixture under the same chemical conditions. These nano-columns were employed for protein separation by nano LC, and the dependence of both nano-column performance on the internal diameter was also discussed.

Abstract
Experiments based on metabolomics represent powerful approaches to the experimental verification of the integrity of food. In particular, high-resolution non-targeted analyses, which are carried out by means of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry systems (LC-MS), offer a variety of options. However, an enormous amount of data is recorded, which must be processed in a correspondingly complex manner. The evaluation of LC-MS based non-targeted data is not entirely trivial and a wide variety of strategies have been developed that can be used in this regard. In this paper, an overview of the mandatory steps regarding data acquisition is given first, followed by a presentation of the required preprocessing steps for data evaluation. Then some multivariate analysis methods are discussed, which have proven to be particularly suitable in this context in recent years. The publication closes with information on the identification of marker compounds.

Abstract
The humankind is pretty dependent on food to control several biological processes into the organism. As the world population increases, the demand for foodstuffs follows the same trend claiming for a high food production situation. For this reason, a substantial amount of chemicals is used in agriculture and livestock husbandries every year, enhancing the likelihood of contaminated foodstuffs being commercialized. This outlook becomes a public health concern; thus, the governmental regulatory agencies impose laws to control the residues and contaminants in food matrices. Currently, one of the most important analytical techniques to perform it is LC. Despite its already recognized effectiveness, it is often time consuming and requires significant volumes of reagents, which are transformed into toxic waste. In this context, miniaturized LC modes emerge as a greener and more effective analytical technique. They have remarkable advantages, including higher sensitivity, lower sample amount, solvent and stationary phase requirements, and more natural coupling to MS. In this review, most of the critical characteristics of them are discussed, focusing on the benchtop instruments and their related analytical columns. Additionally, a discussion regarding the last 10 years of publications reporting miniaturized LC application for the analysis of natural and industrial food samples is categorized. The main chemical classes as applied in the crops are highlighted, including pesticides, veterinary drugs, and mycotoxins.

Abstract
The separation of 11 phthalic acid ester (PAEs) was carried out by nano-liquid chromatography coupled to ultraviolet and MS detection. Preliminary experiments were achieved in order to select suitable stationary phases and chromatographic conditions. The baseline separation was obtained, for all compounds, with an XBridgeTM C18 column in less than 15 min, working in step gradient mode. The sensitivity of the method was improved by on-column focusing. PAEs were extracted from alcoholic and nonalcoholic beverages using vortex-assisted emulsification dispersive liquid-liquid microextration and natural deep eutectic solvents. The whole method was validated in terms of linearity, sensitivity, precision, recovery, and repeatability. Combination of both off-line sample preparation preconcentration and large injection volume led to obtain LOQs in the range 5-47 ng/mL. The developed nano-LC-UV method was extended to MS detection to confirm the presence of PAEs in some beverages commercialized in different types of packaging.
