Assessing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species in atmospheric and aquatic environments: Analytical challenges and opportunities

The generation and transformation mechanisms of reactive oxygen species in the environment and their implications for pollution control processes: a review

Reactive oxygen species (ROS), substances with strong activity generated by oxygen during electron transfer, play a significant role in the decomposition of organic matter in various environmental settings, including soil, water and atmosphere. Although ROS has a short lifespan (ranging from a few nanoseconds to a few days), it continuously generated during the interaction between microorganisms and their environment, especially in environments characterized by strong ultraviolet radiation, fluctuating oxygen concentration or redox conditions, and the abundance of metal minerals. A comprehensive understanding of the fate of ROS in nature can provide new ideas for pollutant degradation and is of great significance for the development of green degradation technologies for organic pollutants. At present, the review of ROS generally revolves around various advanced oxidation processes, but lacks a description and summary of the fate of ROS in nature, this article starts with the definition of reactive oxidants species and reviews the production, migration, and transformation mechanisms of ROS in soil, water and atmospheric environments, focusing on recent developments. In addition, the stimulating effects of ROS on organisms were reviewed. Conclusively, the article summarizes the classic processes, possible improvements, and future directions for ROS-mediated degradation of pollutants. This review offers suggestions for future research directions in this field and provides the possible ROS technology application in pollutants treatment.

Exposure to Intermittent Environmental Hypoxia Promotes Vascular Remodeling through Angiogenesis in the Liver of Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides)

In this study, we explored the effects of 4 weeks of intermittent hypoxic exposure (IHE) on liver angiogenesis and related regulatory mechanisms in largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides). The results indicated that the O2 tension for loss of equilibrium (LOE) decreased from 1.17 to 0.66 mg/L after 4 weeks of IHE. Meanwhile, the red blood cell (RBC) and hemoglobin concentrations significantly increased during IHE. Our investigation also found that the observed increase in angiogenesis was correlated with a high expression of related regulators, such as Jagged, phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K), and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). After 4 weeks of IHE, the overexpression of factors related to angiogenesis processes mediated by HIF-independent pathways (such as nuclear factor kappa-B (NF-κB), NADPH oxidase 1 (NOX1), and interleukin 8 (IL8)) was correlated with the accumulation of lactic acid (LA) in the liver. The addition of cabozantinib, a specific inhibitor of VEGFR2, blocked the phosphorylation of VEGFR2 and downregulated the expression of downstream angiogenesis regulators in largemouth bass hepatocytes exposed to hypoxia for 4 h. These results suggested that IHE promoted liver vascular remodeling by the regulation of angiogenesis factors, presenting a potential mechanism for the improvement of hypoxia tolerance in largemouth bass.

Formation of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals from the Irradiation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) provide a complex matrix for environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) to stabilize in particulate matter, allowing them to be transported over long distances in the atmosphere while participating in light-driven reactions and causing various cardiopulmonary diseases. In this study, four PAHs ranging from three to five rings (anthracene, phenanthrene, pyrene, and benzo[e]pyrene) were investigated for EPFR formation upon photochemical and aqueous-phase aging. Through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, it was found that approximately 10¹⁵ to 10¹⁶ spins g^-1 of EPFRs were formed from the PAH upon aging. EPR analysis also revealed that carbon-centered and monooxygen-centered radicals were predominantly formed by irradiation. However, oxidation and fused-ring matrices have added complexity to the chemical environment of these carbon-centered radicals, as observed by their g-values. This study showed that atmospheric aging results not only in the transformation of PAH-derived EPFR but also in an increase in EPFR concentrations of up to 10¹⁷ spins g^-1. Therefore, because of their stability and photosensitivity, PAH-derived EPFRs have a major impact on the environment.

Evaluation of flue gas emission factor and toxicity of the PM-bounded PAH from lab-scale waste combustion

Atmospheric particulate matter (PM) has a significant threat not only to human health but also to our environment. In Hungary, 54% of PM10 comes from residential combustion, which also includes the practice of household waste burning. Therefore, this work aims to investigate the quality of combustion through the flue gas concentrations (CO, CO₂, O₂) and to identify and evaluate the negative impacts of PM and PAHs generated during controlled lab-scale combustion of different mixed wastes (cardboard and glossy paper, polypropylene and polyethylene terephthalate, polyester and cotton). Mixed wastes were burnt in a lab-scale tubular furnace at different temperatures with 180 dm³/h air flow rate. Chemical analyses were coupled with ecotoxicological tests using the bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri. Ecotoxicity was expressed as toxic unit (TU) values, toxic equivalent factors (TEF) were also presented. During the combustion same amount of O₂ enters the reaction, but a different amount CO₂ is generated due to the C content of the sample. The waste with highest C-content related to the highest CO₂ emission. Increasing the combustion temperature produces more PM-bound PAHs, which remains the same composition in the case of plastic and textile groups. The TU of solid contaminants decreases with increasing combustion temperature and increases with the minerals which are left behind in the water from the solid contaminants.

Phytotoxicity of particulate matter from controlled burning of different plastic waste types

According to careful estimations, open burning of plastic waste affects app. 2 billion people worldwide. While human health risks have become more and more obvious, much less information is available on the phytotoxicity of these emissions. In our study phytotoxicity of particulate matter samples generated during controlled combustion of different plastic waste types such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyurethane (PUR), polypropylene (PP), polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene (PE) was evaluated based on peroxidase levels. While different samples showed different concentration-effect relationship patterns, higher concentration(s) caused decreased peroxidase activities in each sample indicating serious damage.
