Reduction of stent artifacts using high-frequency harmonic ultrasound imaging

Intravascular Ultrasound Transducer by Using Polarization Inversion Technique for Tissue Harmonic Imaging: Modeling and Experiments

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) tissue harmonic imaging (THI) is a useful vessel imaging technique that can provide deep penetration depth as well as high spatial and contrast resolution. Typically, a high-frequency IVUS transducer for THI requires a broad bandwidth or dual-frequency bandwidth. However, it is very difficult to make an IVUS transducer with a frequency bandwidth covering from the fundamental frequency to the second harmonic or a dual-peak at the desired frequency. To solve this problem, in this study, we applied the polarization inversion technique (PIT) to the IVUS transducer for THI. The PIT makes it relatively easy to design IVUS transducers with suitable frequency characteristics for THI depending on the inversion ratio of the piezoelectric layer and specifications of the passive materials. In this study, two types of IVUS transducers based on the PIT were developed for THI. One is a front-side inversion layer (FSIL) transducer with a broad bandwidth, and the other is a back-side inversion layer (BSIL) transducer with a dual-frequency bandwidth. These transducers were designed using finite element analysis (FEA)-based simulation, and the prototype transducers were fabricated. Subsequently, the performance was evaluated by not only electrical impedance and pulse-echo response tests but also B-mode imaging tests with a 25 μm tungsten wire and tissue-mimicking gelatin phantoms. The FEA simulation and experimental results show that the proposed scheme can successfully implement the tissue harmonic IVUS image, and thus it can be one of the promising techniques for developing IVUS transducers for THI.

Demonstration of second-harmonic IVUS feasibility with focused broadband miniature transducers

Focused broadband miniature polyvinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene (PVDF TrFE) ultrasonic transducers were investigated for intravascular (IVUS) second-harmonic imaging. Modeling and experimental studies demonstrated that focused transducers, unlike conventional flat transducers, build up second harmonic peak pressures faster and stronger, leading to an increased SNR of second harmonic content within the coronary geometry. Experimental results demonstrated that focused second harmonic pressures could be controlled to occur at specific depths by controlling the f-number of the transducer. The experimental results were in good agreement with the modeled results. Experiments were conducted using three imaging modalities: fundamental 20 MHz (F20), second harmonic 40 MHz (H40), and fundamental 40 MHz (F40). The lateral resolutions for a 1-mm transducer (f-number 3.2) at F20, F40, and H40 were experimentally measured to be 162, 123, and 124 microm, respectively, which agreed well with the theoretical calculations with <<8% error. Lateral resolution was further characterized in the three modes, using a micromachined phantom consisting of fixed bars and spaces with widths ranging from 20 to 160 microm. H40 exhibited better lateral resolution, clearly displaying 40- and 60-microm bars with about 4 dB and 7 dB greater signal strength compared with F20. Ex vivo human aorta images were obtained in the second-harmonic imaging mode to show the feasibility of high resolution second-harmonic IVUS using focused transducers.

Elastic guided wave propagation in a periodic array of multi-layered piezoelectric plates with finite cross-sections

In this study, we present a model study of guided wave dispersion and resonance behavior of an array of piezoelectric plates with arbitrary cross-sections. The objective of this work is to analyze the influence of the geometry of an element of a 1D-array ultrasound transducer on generating multi-resonance frequency so as to increase the frequency bandwidth of the transducers. A semi-analytical finite-element (SAFE) method is used to model guided wave propagation in multi-layered 1D-array ultrasound transducers. Each element of the array is composed of LiNbO3 piezoelectric material with rectangular or subdiced cross-section. Four-node bilinear finite-elements have been used to discretize the cross-section of the transducer. Dispersion curves showing the dependence of phase and group velocities on the frequency, and mode shapes of propagating modes were obtained for different geometry consurations. A parametric analysis was carried out to determine the effect of the aspect ratio, subdicing, inversion layer and matching layers on the vibrational behavior of 1D-array ultrasound transducers. It was found that the geometry with subdiced cross-section causes more vibration modes compared with the rectangular section. Modal analysis showed that the additional modes correspond to lateral modes of the piezoelectric subdiced section. In addition, some modes have strong normal displacements, which may influence the bandwidth and the pressure field in front of the transducer. In addition, the dispersion curves reveal strong coupling between waveguide modes due to the anisotropy of the piezoelectric crystal. The effect of the matching layers was to cluster extensional and flexural modes within a certain frequency range. Finally, inversion layer is found to have a minor effect on the dispersion curves. This analysis may provide a means to analyze and understand the dynamic response of 1D-array ultrasound transducers.

Pulse inversion sequences for mechanically scanned transducers

Mechanically scanned transducers are currently used for tissue harmonic imaging (THI) and nonlinear microbubble imaging at high frequencies. The pulse inversion (PI) technique is widely used for suppressing the fundamental signal, but its effectiveness is reduced by relative tissue/transducer motion. In this paper, we investigate multipulse inversion (MPI) sequences that achieve a significant improvement on the fundamental suppression for mechanically scanned single-element transducers. MPI was subsequently applied on simulated and measured RF-data and relative fundamental suppression was compared with the 2-pulse PI technique. Simulations showed, for example, an increased fundamental suppression of 6 and 10 dB for MPI-sequences that combined 3 and 7 pulses, respectively, for a rotating intravascular ultrasound transducer with an interpulse angle of 0.15 degrees. Initial application of MPI sequences on RF-data from in vivo acquisitions resulted in similar fundamental suppression levels. The investigated MPI technique will help to reduce relative tissue/transducer motion effects and might lead to improved sensitivity and spatial resolution in nonlinear tissue imaging and improved microbubble detection in contrast imaging for mechanically scanned transducers.

Robust intravascular optical coherence elastography by line correlations

We present a new method for intravascular optical coherence elastography, which is robust against motion artefacts. It employs the correlation between adjacent lines, instead of subsequent frames. Pressure to deform the tissue is applied synchronously with the line scan rate of the optical coherence tomography (OCT) instrument. The viability of the method is demonstrated with a simulation study. We find that the root mean square (rms) error of the displacement estimate is 0.55 microm, and the rms error of the strain is 0.6%. It is shown that high-strain spots in the vessel wall, such as observed at the sites of vulnerable atherosclerotic lesions, can be detected with the technique.

Harmonic intravascular ultrasound imaging with a dual-frequency catheter

Recent studies have shown the feasibility of tissue and contrast harmonic imaging with a prototype nonlinear intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) system using a conventional single-element rotating IVUS catheter. In this study, a dual-frequency transducer element was mounted in an IVUS catheter and its second harmonic imaging performance was investigated and compared with that of a conventional IVUS catheter. Hydrophone measurements showed a transmit efficiency improvement of >6 dB for the dual-frequency catheter at 20 MHz. In vitro phantom experiments showed a signal-to noise ratio improvement of >5 dB in second harmonic mode at 40 MHz (H40) with the dual-frequency catheter, when using equal transmit voltage for both catheters. Finally, in vivo experiments were conducted and showed image improvement in H40 acquisitions with respect to the conventional IVUS catheter.

A simulation study on tissue harmonic imaging with a single-element intravascular ultrasound catheter

Recently, in vivo feasibility of tissue harmonic imaging with a mechanically rotated intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) catheter was experimentally demonstrated. To isolate the second harmonic signal content, a combination of pulse inversion and analog filtering was used. In this paper the development of a simulation tool to investigate nonlinear IVUS beams is reported, and the influence of transducer rotation and axial catheter-to-tissue motion on the efficiency of PI signal processing is evaluated. Nonlinear beams were simulated in homogeneous tissue-mimicking media at a transmit frequency of 20 MHz, which resulted in second harmonic pressure fields at 40 MHz. The competing effects of averaging and decorrelation between neighboring rf lines on the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) were studied for a single point scatterer. An optimal SNR was achieved when lines were combined over 3 degrees - 3.75 degrees. When the transducer was rotated with respect to point scatterers, simulating the acoustic response of tissue, the fundamental frequency suppression using PI degraded rapidly with increasing interpulse angles. The effect of axial catheter-to-tissue motion on the efficiency of pulse inversion seemed to be of less influence for realistic motion values. The results of this study will aid in the optimization of harmonic IVUS imaging systems.
