Effect of ultrasonic pretreatment on emulsion polymerization of styrene

Sustainable sonoprocess for synthesizing γ-Ga2O3/In3Sn core-shell submicron particles via acoustic emulsification and oxidation of molten EGaInSn at room temperature

This study investigated the sustainable room-temperature synthesis of In3Sn/γ-Ga2O3 core-shell particles via an acoustic route using molten eutectic Ga-In-Sn alloy (EGaInSn). Sonication was used for the emulsification and oxidation steps. During the emulsification step, the sonication of molten EGaInSn in ethanol (EtOH) at 45 kHz facilitated the formation of the smallest EGaInSn particles (average diameter, Dav = 782 nm). In terms of EGaInSn particle size, 45 kHz sonication was suitable for emulsification of molten EGaInSn and ethanol system than 24 kHz sonication. During the oxidation step, the preferential oxidation of Ga in the EGaInSn particles occurred via sonication in a solution of EtOH and hydrazine monohydrate (N2H4·H2O). This selective oxidation of Ga on the surface of the EGaInSn particles resulted in the formation of In3Sn/γ-Ga2O3 core-shell particles via sonication at 45 kHz and room temperature. The entire process eliminated the need for dispersants and high-temperature treatments. Additionally, the process did not generate waste fluid containing counter anions, such as chloride anions. This sustainable sonochemical method offers a carbon-neutral approach for synthesizing functional nanocomposites with improved safety, simplicity, and energy efficiency.

Process intensification of synthesis of metal organic framework particles assisted by ultrasound irradiation

This study synthesized UiO-66, a typical Zr-Metal Organic Framework (MOF), by using an ultrasound-assisted synthesis method to reduce the synthesis time. This method was short-time ultrasound irradiation at the initial stage of the reaction. As compared with average particle size of conventional solvothermal method (=192 nm), averaged particle size by the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method showed particle sizes that were smaller on average, ranging from 56 to 155 nm. In order to compare the relative reaction rates of the solvothermal method and the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method, the cloudiness of the reaction solution in the reactor was observed with a video camera, and the luminance was calculated from the images obtained by the video camera. It was found that the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method showed a faster increase in luminance and shorter induction time than the solvothermal method. The slope of the luminance increase during the transient period was also found to become increase with the addition of ultrasound, which also affects the growth of particles. Observation of the aliquoted reaction solution confirmed that particle growth was faster in the ultrasound-assisted synthesis method than in the solvothermal method. Numerical simulations were also performed using MATLAB ver. 5.5 to analyze the unique reaction field generated by ultrasound. Bubble radius and temperature inside a cavitation bubble was obtained using the Keller-Miksis equation, which reproduces the motion of a single bubble. The bubble radius expanded and contracted repeatedly according to the ultrasound sound pressure, and eventually collapsed. The temperature at the time of collapse was extremely high, exceeding 17,000 K. It was confirmed that the high-temperature reaction field generated by ultrasound irradiation promoted nucleation, leading to a reduction in particle size and induction time.

Synergies between therapeutic ultrasound, gene therapy and immunotherapy in cancer treatment

Due to the ease of use and excellent safety profile, ultrasound is a promising technique for both diagnosis and site-specific therapy. Ultrasound-based techniques have been developed to enhance the pharmacokinetics and efficacy of therapeutic agents in cancer treatment. In particular, transfection with exogenous nucleic acids has the potential to stimulate an immune response in the tumor microenvironment. Ultrasound-mediated gene transfection is a growing field, and recent work has incorporated this technique into cancer immunotherapy. Compared with other gene transfection methods, ultrasound-mediated gene transfection has a unique opportunity to augment the intracellular uptake of nucleic acids while safely and stably modulating the expression of immunostimulatory cytokines. The development and commercialization of therapeutic ultrasound systems further enhance the potential translation. In this Review, we introduce the underlying mechanisms and ongoing preclinical studies of ultrasound-based techniques in gene transfection for cancer immunotherapy. Furthermore, we expand on aspects of therapeutic ultrasound that impact gene therapy and immunotherapy, including tumor debulking, enhancing cytokines and chemokines and altering nanoparticle pharmacokinetics as these effects of ultrasound cannot be fully dissected from targeted gene therapy. We finally explore the outlook for this rapidly developing field.

Effect of geometrical configuration of reactor on a ZrP nano-dispersion process using ultrasonic irradiation

This study investigated the position of ultrasonic irradiation source and reactor geometry on fragmentation rate of a layered compound, α-zirconium phosphate (α-ZrP). By numerically solving the acoustic pressure distribution using COMSOL Multiphysics®, it is clarified the mechanism whereby the operating factors influenced the α-ZrP dispersion to make a suggestion of guideline of the process design method. Two vessels made of glass with a flat-bottom and a spherical-bottom, respectively, were used. Although the flat-bottom vessel at lower horn position showed the best performance of fragmentation, the region of high acoustic pressure field in the flat bottom vessel sharply narrowed and the transmittance became prominently low. On the other hand, no significant difference of the transmittance value in the spherical bottom vessel between the cases of low and high horn positions could be observed and the spherical bottom vessel was robust for the horn position. These results suggest that not only the magnitude of acoustic pressure but also the size of high acoustic pressure region is also an important factor and a spherical bottom vessel is one of suitable shape which gives large size of high acoustic pressure region regardless of the horn position.

Synthesis of sub-micronic and nanometric PMMA particles via emulsion polymerization assisted by ultrasound: Process flow sheet and characterization

PMMA particle synthesis was performed from MMA (methyl methacrylate) and water mixtures, exposed to different ultrasonic systems and frequencies. The sonication sequence was 20kHz→580kHz→858kHz→1138kHz, and the solution was sampled after each irradiation step for polymerization. Effects of sonication parameters (time, power), polymerization method (thermo-initiated or photo-initiated), use of small amounts of surfactant (Triton X-100™ or Tween® 20) and initial MMA quantity were investigated on particle size and synthesis yields. Particle size and size distribution were measured by DLS (Dynamic Light Scattering), and confirmed via SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) images. Synthesis yield was calculated using the dry weight method. Particle composition was estimated using FTIR (Fourier Transform Infra-Red) spectroscopy. PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate) monodispersed particles were successfully synthesized, with a possibility of control in the 78-310nm size range. These sized-controlled particles were synthesized with a 7.5-85% synthesis yield (corresponding to 7.5-40g/L particle solid content), depending on operational parameters. Furthermore, a trade-off between particle size and synthesis yield can be proposed: 20kHz→10min waiting time→580kHz→858kHz leading to 90nm particles diameter with 72% yield in less than 40min for the whole sequence. Thus, the synthesis under ultrasound can be found easy to implement and time efficient, ensuring the success of the scale-up approach and opening up industrial applications for this type of polymeric particles.
