Microwave and ultrasound-assisted synthesis of poly(vinyl chloride)/riboflavin modified MWCNTs: Examination of thermal, mechanical and morphology properties

Poly(vinyl chloride)/Nanocarbon Composites for Advanced Potentiometric Membrane Sensor Design

Polymer nanocomposites filled with carbon nanoparticles (CNPs) are a hot topic in materials science. This article discusses the current research on the use of these materials as interfacial electron transfer films for solid contact potentiometric membrane sensors (SC-PMSs). The results of a comparative study of plasticized poly (vinyl chloride) (pPVC) matrices modified with single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), fullerenes-C60, and their hybrid ensemble (SWCNTs-C60) are reported. The morphological characteristics and electrical conductivity of the prepared nanostructured composite films are reported. It was found that the specific electrical conductivity of the pPVC/SWCNTs-C60 polymer film was higher than that of pPVC filled with individual nanocomponents. The effectiveness of this composite material as an electron transfer film in a new potentiometric membrane sensor for detecting phenylpyruvic acid (in anionic form) was demonstrated. Screening for this metabolic product of phenylalanine in body fluids is of significant diagnostic interest in phenylketonuria (dementia), viral hepatitis, and alcoholism. The developed sensor showed a stable and fast Nernstian response for phenylpyruvate ions in aqueous solutions over the wide linear concentration range of 5 × 10-7-1 × 10-3 M, with a detection limit of 10-7.2 M.

Medicinal benefits, biological, and nanoencapsulation functions of riboflavin with its toxicity profile: A narrative review

Riboflavin is a precursor of the essential coenzymes flavin mononucleotide and flavin adenine dinucleotide. Both possess antioxidant properties and are involved in oxidation-reduction reactions, which have a significant impact on energy metabolism. Also, the coenzymes participate in metabolism of pyridoxine, niacin, folate, and iron. Humans must obtain riboflavin through their daily diet because of the lack of programmed enzymatic machineries for de novo riboflavin synthesis. Because of its physiological nature and fast elimination from the human body when in excess, riboflavin consumed is unlikely to induce any negative effects or develop toxicity in humans. The use of riboflavin in pharmaceutical and clinical contexts has been previously explored, including for preventing and treating oxidative stress and reperfusion oxidative damage, creating synergistic compounds to mitigate colorectal cancer, modulating blood pressure, improving diabetes mellitus comorbidities, as well as neuroprotective agents and potent photosensitizer in killing bloodborne pathogens. Thus, the goal of this review is to provide a comprehensive understanding of riboflavin's biological applications in medicine, key considerations of riboflavin safety and toxicity, and a brief overview on the nanoencapsulation of riboflavin for various functions including the treatment of a range of diseases, photodynamic therapy, and cellular imaging.

Microwave-Assisted Functionalization of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes for Biosensor and Drug Delivery Applications

Microwave-assisted synthetic methods have emerged as a popular technique for surface modification and the functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) for diverse drug delivery applications. Microwave-induced functionalization of MWCNTs provides a high functionalization and requires less time than conventional techniques. Microwave methods are simple, fast, and effective for the covalent and noncovalent conjugation of MWCNTs with various biomolecules and polymers. The present review focuses on the synthetic and drug delivery applications of microwave irradiation techniques (MITs) for the functionalization of MWCNTs, using amino acids and other molecular frameworks containing amino groups, vitamins, proteins, epoxy moieties, metal nanoparticles, and polymers.

Surface functionalized inorganic phosphor by grafting organic antenna for long term preservation of latent fingerprints and data-security applications

Creative advancements are enormously sought for the advanced forensic and data security in modern era. Herein, fabrication of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) functionalized Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ (5 mol %) nanopowders dispersed in a poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) matrix for long term preservation and visualization of latent fingerprints, as well as printing. Efficient intramolecular energy transfers from coordinated ligand to the doped Eu³⁺ ions, called the antenna effect was precisely organized by grafting organic molecule, resultant to an enhanced photoluminescence emission. On this basis, the masking of PVA/Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ (5 mol %)@BSA solution on a latent fingerprints results a flexible transparent film; a highly stable fingerprint images with well-defined ridge characteristics was developed on the film, which enabling personal individualization. Interestingly, the followed latent fingerprints development technique was non-destructive and stored long duration up to 1 year on filtrating and non-filtrating surfaces. The same mechanism was also validated by utilized for application of PVA/Gd₂O₃:Eu³⁺ (5 mol %)@BSA nanocomposites in dip pen and intaglio printing. Hence, the prepared nanocomposites signify an competent method towards long preservative fingerprints as well as great performance for data security operations. This work endorses a prospective paradigm for luminescence enhancement and its applications in advanced forensic science.

Cerium substitution in LaCoO3 perovskite oxide as bifunctional electrocatalysts for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions

Perovskite oxides have attracted great attention in electrochemistry due to their compositional and structural flexibility. Herein, microwave/ultrasound assisted hydrothermal procedures were developed to synthesize Ce-doped LaCoO₃ perovskite oxide as bifunctional electrocatalysts for OER and HER application, achieving highly efficient bifunctional catalytic performance. The obtained LCC4 exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of 380 mV and 305 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 toward OER and HER, respectively. The lower Tafel slopes of 80 mV per decade and 144 mV per decade for OER and HER, respectively, indicated the faster reaction kinetics for the improved inherent electrocatalytic activity. The outstanding long-term durability of LCC4 in alkaline conditions was also vital to the practical applications of water electrolysis. The improved bifunctional electrocatalytic activity was attributed to the synergistic effects of excellent conductivity and enriched active sites arising from A-site substitution. This work not only provides an efficient strategy for the development of perovskite oxide-based electrocatalysts but also puts forward a new insight on bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Sonochemical synthesis of novel C60 fullerene 1,4-oxathiane derivative through the intermediate fullerene radical anion

We have discovered a selective and efficient method for the synthesis of previously unknown 1,9-(1',4'-oxathiano)-1,9-dihydro-(C₆₀-I_h)[5,6]fullerene, a compound with the direct attachment of the sulfur atom to the fullerene core. The method is based on the reaction of C₆₀ with 1,2-hydroxythiols in the presence of inorganic bases in air under ultrasonication. The significance of ultrasound has been exemplified with the comparative conventional methods. The title compound has been identified with mass-(MALDI TOF/TOF), one- and two-dimensional NMR ¹H and ¹³C (COSY, HSQC, HMBS), IR, UV-Vis spectroscopic techniques. Using the direct EPR method, we have detected radical anion C₆₀^- (g = 2.0046 and ΔH = 2 G) as a key reaction intermediate of the sonochemical reaction. Based on the experimental results and quantum chemical calculations, we have proposed a mechanism for the conversion of C₆₀ and 2-mercaptoethanol to the C₆₀-1,4-oxathiane adduct.

Microwave-Assisted Synthesis of an Alternant Poly(fluorene-oxadiazole). Synthesis, Properties, and White Light-Emitting Devices

An alternant poly(dihexyl fluorene-co diphenyl oxadiazole) has been synthetized by microwave-assisted oxidative polymerization. The structure has been confirmed by ¹H-NMR and FTIR spectroscopies. Gel permeation chromatography indicated high molecular weight and low polydispersity index. DFT calculations suggested a complete separation of HOMO and LUMO orbitals, which were located on fluorene and oxadiazole moiety, respectively. X-ray diffraction, polarized light microscopy, and atomic force microscopy indicated the polymer tendency to stack into a layered morphology with a more compact structure for the films prepared by spin coating. Furthermore, UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopies indicated the formation of H-aggregates which played a key role in photoluminescence quenching in solid state. Nevertheless, the good charge mobility gained due to the orbital overlapping in H-aggregates led to excellent electroluminescence, which enabled the development of white OLED devices with outstanding stability.

Using sonochemistry for the production of poly(vinyl alcohol)/MWCNT–vitamin B1 nanocomposites: exploration of morphology, thermal and mechanical properties

Functionalized MWCNTs with vitamin B₁ as a green material were applied for the enhancement of poly(vinyl alcohol) properties.

Ultrasonic synthesis and characterization of poly(acrylamide)-co-poly(vinylimidazole)@MWCNTs composite for use as an electrochemical material

Applying a nanocomposite to increase the conductivity of an electrode can facilitate electrochemical analysis. In this regard, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) evenly dispersed in hydrophilic solution can play an important role in electrochemical bio-sensing due to their unique properties, such as their high electrical conductivity and ability to conjugate with hydrophilic enzymes. Herein, we report the simple ultrasonic synthesis of a highly dispersible, enzyme-binding nanocomposite, poly(acrylamide)-co-poly(vinyl imidazole) (7:1 mol ratio)-MWCNTs (PAA-PVI@MWCNTs). This material, having a zeta potential of 36.6 ± 0.53 mV, was applied as a film to an electrode surface and stably bound with glucose oxidase to transfer an electron between the enzyme and electrode in the presence of glucose. The PAA-PVI@MWCNTs composite, which was readily dispersed in deionized water, can be used as a biocompatible material for applications such as bio-sensing, point-of-care testing (POCT), and other health care functions.

Capturing Cd2+ ions from wastewater using PVA/α-MnO2–oleic acid nanocomposites

A poly(vinyl alcohol) nanocomposite containing α-MnO₂–oleic acid has been fabricated as an efficient adsorbent for capturing Cd²⁺ ions from aqueous solution.
