Abstract
This review considers the forward osmosis (FO) membrane process as one of the feasible solutions for water desalination. Different aspects related to the FO process are reviewed with an emphasis on ultrasound assisted FO membrane processes. The different types of membranes used in FO are also reviewed and discussed; thus, their configuration, structure and applications are considered. Coupling ultrasound with FO enhances water flux through the membrane under certain conditions. In addition, this review addresses questions related to implementation of an ultrasound/FO system for seawater desalination, such as the impact on fouling, flow configuration, and location of fouling. Finally, the mechanisms for the impact of ultrasound on FO membranes are discussed and future research directions are suggested.

Effects of Operating Conditions on the Performance of Forward Osmosis with Ultrasound for Seawater Desalination. WATER 2022. Abstract
This study investigates the effect of using ultrasound on water flux through a forward osmosis membrane when applied for seawater desalination. A synthetically prepared solution simulating seawater with scaling substances and organic foulants was used. The parameters considered include membrane cross-flow velocity, flow configuration (co-current versus counter-current), direction of ultrasound waves relative to the membrane side (active layer versus support layer), and type of draw solution (NaCl versus MgCl2). The study revealed that applying a continuous ultrasound frequency of 40 kHz was effective in enhancing water flux, especially when the ultrasound source faces the membrane active layer, irrespective of the used draw solution. The highest water flux enhancement (70.8% with NaCl draw solution and 61.9% with MgCl2 draw solution) occurred at low cross-flow velocity and with the ultrasound waves facing the membrane active layer. It was also observed that the use of ultrasound generally caused an adverse effect on the water flux when the ultrasound source faces the membrane support layer. Moreover, applying the ultrasound at the membrane support layer increased the reverse solute flux. For all tested cases, higher water flux enhancement was observed with NaCl as a draw solution compared to the cases when MgCl2 was used as a draw solution.

Abstract
Contaminants of emerging concern (CEC) such as pharmaceuticals commonly found in urban and industrial wastewater are a potential threat to human health and have negative environmental impact. Most wastewater treatment plants cannot efficiently remove these compounds and therefore, many pharmaceuticals end up in aquatic ecosystems, inducing problems such as toxicity and antibiotic-resistance. This review reports the extent of pharmaceutical removal by individual processes such as bioreactors, advanced oxidation processes and membrane filtration systems, all of which are not 100% efficient and can lead to the direct discharge of pharmaceuticals into water bodies. Also, the importance of understanding biotransformation of pharmaceutical compounds during biological and ultrasound treatment, and its impact on treatment efficacy will be reviewed. Different combinations of the processes above, either as an integrated configuration or in series, will be discussed in terms of their degradation efficiency and scale-up capabilities. The trace quantities of pharmaceutical compounds in wastewater and scale-up issues of ultrasound highlight the importance of membrane filtration as a concentration and volume reduction treatment step for wastewater, which could subsequently be treated by ultrasound.

Abstract
Power ultrasound (US) transmits substantial amounts of small mechanical movements serving for particle detaching in membrane filtrations. This topic has been reviewed in recent years mainly focused on the mechanisms by which the flux is improved under specific processing conditions. US also been shown to improve food quality by changing physical properties and modifying the activity of enzymes and microorganisms. Surprisingly, limited information exists regarding on how the application of US results in terms of process and quality during membrane filtration of complex matrices such as liquid foods. This review highlights the recent advances in the use of US in membrane filtration processes focused in the manufacturing of foodstuffs and food ingredients, and perspectives of novel hybrid membrane-US systems that may be quite interesting for this field. The application of US in food membrane processing increases the flux, but the lack of standardization regarding to experimental conditions, make suitable comparisons impossible. In this sense, careful attention must be paid regarding to the ultrasonic intensity (UI), the membrane configuration and type of transducers and volume of the treated solution. Dairy products are the most studied application of US membrane food processing, but research has been mainly focused on flux enhancement; hitherto there have been no reports of how operational variables in these processes affect critical aspects such as quality and food safety. Also, studies performed at industrial scale and economical assessments are still missing. Application of US combined with membrane operations such as reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO) and enzyme membrane bioreactors (EMBR) may result interesting for the production of value-added foods. In the perspective of the authors, the stagnation of the development of acoustic filtration systems in food is due more to a prejudice on this subject, rather than actual impedance due to the lack of technological development of transducers. This later has shown important advances in the last years making them suitable for tailor made applications, thus opening several research opportunities to the food engineering not yet explored.

Abstract
Internal concentration polarization (ICP) represents a serious challenge in forward osmosis (FO) desalination since it causes a significant decline in the water flux across the membrane. Mitigation of ICP is cumbersome since the phenomenon occurs within the membrane porous support layer and mitigation procedures such as inducing turbulence or changing the hydrodynamic conditions tend to be ineffective. In this study, the effect of 40 kHz ultrasound on FO desalination of synthesized brackish and seawater was investigated. The studied process utilizes two different inorganic draw solutes (magnesium and copper sulfate) that are available commercially, can generate high osmotic pressures, and can be easily separated from the product water. Different concentrations of the draw solutions were considered. Results show that the applied ultrasound was effective in partially mitigating the ICP effects and enhancing the water flux. Depending on the feed and the draw solution concentration, flux enhancements of up to 34.6% and 43.9% were observed with magnesium sulfate and copper sulfate draw solution, respectively. In addition, it was observed that the effect of ultrasound on flux enhancement was more evident at lower draw solution concentrations. Although water flux was enhanced, ultrasound resulted in an increased reverse draw solute flux across the membrane.

Abstract
Forward osmosis (FO) has been adopted to treat complex wastewater such as landfill leachate due to its high rejection of organics. In this study, the in-line adsorptive process using biochar (BC) or powdered activated carbon (PAC) was applied to a cross flow FO system to enhance the mitigation of the FO membrane fouling from landfill leachate. The changes in the leachate composition along the treatments were tracked by excitation emission matrix-parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC) to identify tryptophan-like (C1), fulvic-like (C2), and humic-like (C3) components. After a single operation of FO, the C1 was found to be the main constituent responsible for membrane fouling irrespective of varying operation conditions regarding draw solute concentrations and flow rates. Both sorbents (i.e., BC and PAC) exhibited the preferential removal behavior towards C1 > C2 > C3, which was well supported by their individual adsorption isotherm model parameters. The addition of in-line adsorption treatment to FO resulted in substantial improvements in the filtered volume (>57%) and the flux recovery (>80%) compared to the single FO operation. Without chemical cleaning of membrane, the flux was fully recovered at a dose of 10 g/L BC or 0.3 g/L of PAC. A significant and negative correlation was found between the flux recovery and the C1 of the feed leachate or the corresponding spectral peak intensity (p < 0.05) for the integrated FO system, suggesting the potential of using on-line fluorescence monitoring for the performance of the integrated system in terms of fouling mitigation. This study provided a new insight into the effectiveness of BC or PAC adsorption as the in-line integration with an FO system for the targeted removal of FO membrane foulants in landfill leachate.

Abstract
Abstract
In food processing, concentration of liquid food is one of the important steps required for several purposes. Concentration of liquid food while preserving sensorial and nutritional components is quite challenging, especially for thermal-based concentrating processes. This is due to the significant loss of those components which are heat sensitive. Therefore, considerable efforts have been devoted to develop new concentrating processes which can solve this problem. Among the developed processes, forward osmosis (FO) has been considered as an interesting alternative since it can be operated at low operating pressure and temperature and obtain a concentrated solution with high solid contents. However, there are several challenges in FO operation e.g. fouling phenomena, concentration polarization, and reverse diffusion of solution from draw solution. To address these issues, several developments have been made to prepare membrane which has high hydrophilicity, low fouling tendency, reduced concentration polarization, and low solute diffusion. The desired membrane has been obtained, for example, by modifying selective and support layers of the membrane. This paper reviews advances in FO membrane, including membrane preparation and modification. Principle and important parameters of FO in concentrating liquid foods are overviewed. In addition, challenges and strategies in FO membrane preparation are discussed.

Abstract
Forward osmosis has gained tremendous attention in the field of desalination and wastewater treatment. However, membrane fouling is an inevitable issue. Membrane fouling leads to flux decline, can cause operational problems and can result in negative consequences that can damage the membrane. Hereby, we attempt to review the different types of fouling in forward osmosis, cleaning and control strategies for fouling mitigation, and the impact of membrane hydrophilicity, charge and morphology on fouling. The fundamentals of biofouling, organic, colloidal and inorganic fouling are discussed with a focus on recent studies. We also review some of the in-situ real-time online fouling monitoring technologies for real-time fouling monitoring that can be applicable to future research on forward osmosis fouling studies. A brief discussion on critical flux and the coupled effects of fouling and concentration polarization is also provided.
