Insights into numerical simulation of controlled ultrasonic waveforms driving single cavitation bubble activity

Numerical investigation on the influence of dual-frequency coupling parameters on acoustic cavitation and its analysis of the enhancement and attenuation effect

To understand the effect of coupling parameters between two ultrasonic waves on acoustic cavitation, in this work, Keller-Miksis equation was introduced to built a bubble dynamics model that was used to describe the dynamic evolution of bubble and to discuss the effect of dual-frequency coupling parameters, such as frequency difference f (5 ∼ 280 kHz), phase difference φ (0 ∼ 7π/4 rad), and power allocation ratio β (0 ∼ 9), on acoustic cavitation in the presence of two ultrasonic waves irradiation. The enhancement and attenuation effect of cavitation have also been analyzed in detail by comparing the different dual-frequency combinations with single-frequency mode. It was found that all coupling parameters have a significant impact on acoustic cavitation, where the smaller values of f and φ were employed when β = 1, the stronger cavitation intensity was observed. Nevertheless, as the power allocation ratio is increased from 1 to 9 at φ = 0 for different frequency differences, the acoustic cavitation exhibits an attenuation trend. When the total acoustic power is evenly distributed, namely β = 1, the largest maximum expansion ratio (i.e. 12.96) was obtained at φ = 0 and f = 5 kHz, which represents a strongest cavitation effect. In addition, for different frequency combinations, the enhancement effect is found under the mixture of low and low frequency, whereas attenuation effect is generated easily by the combination of high and low frequency. Moreover, the effect become more pronounced as the proportion of high frequency component increases.

Effects of medium viscoelasticity on bubble collapse strength of interacting polydisperse bubbles

Due to its physical and/or chemical effects, acoustic cavitation plays a crucial role in various emerging applications ranging from advanced materials to biomedicine. The cavitation bubbles usually undergo oscillatory dynamics and violent collapse within a viscoelastic medium, which are closely related to the cavitation-associated effects. However, the role of medium viscoelasticity on the cavitation dynamics has received little attention, especially for the bubble collapse strength during multi-bubble cavitation with the complex interactions between size polydisperse bubbles. In this study, modified Gilmore equations accounting for inter-bubble interactions were coupled with the Zener viscoelastic model to simulate the dynamics of multi-bubble cavitation in viscoelastic media. Results showed that the cavitation dynamics (e.g., acoustic resonant response, nonlinear oscillation behavior and bubble collapse strength) of differently-sized bubbles depend differently on the medium viscoelasticity and each bubble is affected by its neighboring bubbles to a different degree. More specifically, increasing medium viscosity drastically dampens the bubble dynamics and weakens the bubble collapse strength, while medium elasticity mainly affects the bubble resonance at which the bubble collapse strength is maximum. Differently-sized bubbles can achieve resonances and even subharmonic resonances at high driving acoustic pressures as the elasticity changes to certain values, and the resonance frequency of each bubble increases with the elasticity increasing. For the interactions between the size polydisperse bubbles, it indicated that the largest bubble generally has a dominant effect on the dynamics of smaller ones while in turn it is almost unaffected, exhibiting a pattern of destructive and constructive interactions. This study provides a valuable insight into the acoustic cavitation dynamics of multiple interacting polydisperse bubbles in viscoelastic media, which may offer a potential of controlling the medium viscoelasticity to appropriately manipulate the dynamics of multi-bubble cavitation for achieving proper cavitation effects according to the desired application.

Energy balance of high-energy stable acoustic cavitation within dual-frequency sonochemical reactor

The acoustic cavitation bubble as an open energetic system is the seat of conversion of various forms of energy accompanying the bubble oscillation. The energy conversion would explain specific dynamical, thermal and kinetical behaviors. In the present paper, the energy balance related to a stable bubble irradiated by dual-frequency field is simulated numerically and interpreted in accordance with the phenomena occurring inside it. The study particularly focuses on the comparison of the energetic behavior of high-energy stable cavitation with bubbles that are non-active in sonochemistry, submitted to couples of 35, 140, 300 and 515 kHz. The simulation results revealed that pressure forces work is the major energetic input during the bubble oscillation lifetime, while the main energetic loss comes from heat transfer by diffusion and enthalpy loss accompanying water condensation. Besides, high rates of condensation of water molecules and low amounts of accumulated energy inside the bubble volume were identified as the key factors preventing the achievement of the sonochemical activity threshold.

Recent advances in applications of power ultrasound for petroleum industry

Power ultrasound, as an emerging green technology has received increasing attention of the petroleum industry. The physical and chemical effects of the periodic oscillation and implosion of acoustic cavitation bubbles can be employed to perform a variety of functions. Herein, the mechanisms and effects of acoustic cavitation are presented. In addition, the applications of power ultrasound in the petroleum industry are discussed in detail, including enhanced oil recovery, oil sand extraction, demulsification, viscosity reduction, oily wastewater treatment and oily sludge treatment. From the perspective of industrial background, key issue and resolution mechanism, current applications and future development of power ultrasound are discussed. In addition, the effects of acoustic parameters on treatment efficiency, such as frequency, acoustic intensity and treatment time are analyzed. Finally, the challenges and outlook for industrial application of power ultrasound are discussed.

Research on mechanism and characteristics of oil recovery from oily sludge in ultrasonic fields

The acoustic parameters and operating conditions that determine efficiency of oil recovery from oily sludge are studied. Based on this, the mechanism of ultrasonic disintegration of oily sludge is analyzed. The results show that lower frequency ultrasound results in larger and more energetic cavitation bubbles that are more effective in the desorption of oil from solid particles. Moreover, acoustic intensity and treatment time that correspond to maximal oil recovery are found. Increasing the ratio of water to sludge and pH can reduce the slurry viscosity and facilitate the formation of HSiO₃^-, respectively, which improves the oil recovery efficiency. Moreover, Triton X-100 has better oil solubilizing effects than SDBS. After ultrasonic treatment, small amounts of asphaltenes are more stable on solid particles than other components. The heteroatoms such as S, N, and O in asphaltenes form hydrogen bonds with hydroxyl groups on the surface of the particles, impeding the desorption of oil. Mechanical effects such as shock waves and micro jets due to acoustic cavitation can break the hydrogen bonds between asphaltenes and solid particles, thereby facilitating oil recovery from oily sludge.

Oxygen-argon acoustic cavitation bubble in a water-methanol mixture: Effects of medium composition on sonochemical activity

The objective of the present numerical study is to examine the sonochemical production within a single acoustic bubble that oscillates in an aqueous methanol solution under an oxygen-argon mixture. The produced molar yield during the strong collapse was analyzed in accordance with the system composition, i.e. the molar fraction of argon and the volume fraction of methanol. The simulation results based on 180 cases demonstrated the reproducibility of pyrolysis and combustion conditions within the bubble volume. Pure water sonolysis resulted in an optimal production at 90% molar of argon, with O, HO^· and HO₂^· as predominant species at low argon concentrations and O, HO^· et H^· at high concentrations. The addition of methanol changed the whole chemical schema evolving inside the bubble that gave rise to specific species such as CH₂OH,CH₃O,CH₂O,HCO,CO₂ and CO. A common optimum appeared at 40% molar of argon for solutions of 20% (v/v) and up of methanol. An absolute maximum was observed at 40% (v/v) of methanol, in spite of argon concentration. In addition, a significant selectivity of products was observed according to the composition of the medium.

Numerical investigation of the effect of dual frequency sonication on stable bubble dynamics

A computational study aiming to simulate an oxygen single acoustic bubble oscillation under a dual-frequency sonication was presented in this paper. The non-linear response of the bubble to the superposition of two fields of ultrasonic waves was investigated through dynamics parameters, collapse ratios and average velocities. The main goal of this analyze is to link the properties of the wave resulting from the dual-frequency excitation to the dynamics behavior of the bubble. The obtained results prove that, in contrast with the mono-frequency, coupling a wave to lower frequencies enhances the collapse duration and raises the compression ratio in the case of 35 kHz, while associating any of the studied waves to a higher frequency elevates the number of bubble oscillations during a time interval as compared to mono-frequency. The total sonochemical production has been investigated in accordance with the dynamics results, as well as the proportions of the three predominant free radicals, that show a dependency on the value of the basic frequency.
