One-step hydrothermal synthesis of N/Ti3+ co-doping multiphasic TiO2/BiOBr heterojunctions towards enhanced sonocatalytic performance

N-doped Ti3C2-reinforced porous g-C3N4 for photocatalytic contaminants degradation and nitrogen reduction

Herein, a series of N-doped Ti3C2/porous g-C3N4 composites are ultrasonically prepared from N-doped Ti3C2 and porous g-C3N4 under N2 atmosphere. The structure, morphology, and optical characteristics of the as-prepared composites are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, etc. Moreover, photocatalytic measurements show that N-doped Ti3C2 is an excellent modifier for porous g-C3N4 to heighten its photocatalytic activity. Only 44.1% of rhodamine B can be degraded by the photocatalysis of pristine porous g-C3N4, while the photocatalytic degradation ratio of rhodamine B can reach up to 97.5% for the optimal N-doped Ti3C2 loading composites under visible light for 15 min. Moreover, the photocatalytic tests of N2 fixation confirm that the optimal composites show the highest production yield of NH4+ (11.8 μmol gcat-1 h-1), which is 2.11-folds more than that of porous g-C3N4 (5.6 μmol gcat-1 h-1). The reinforced photocatalytic properties are revealed to profit from the more photogenerated electrons and holes' separation, higher ability for light response, and more abundant active sites. This work develops the route for boosting the photocatalytic properties of porous g-C3N4 with N-doped Ti3C2.

Fabrication of a PCN/BiOBr 2D hybrid with improved photocatalytic performance of 2,4-dichorophenol degradation

Photocatalysis has received much attention as an environmentally friendly route to manage the emerging organic pollution problems. Herein, BiOBr nanosheets have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and then PCN/BiOBr hybrids are designed via a facile wet chemical method. The as-prepared PCN/BiOBr hybrids are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra (UV-vis DRS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The PCN/BiOBr composite exhibits remarkable improved activity in the degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as compared to the pristine BiOBr. Based on the ·OH amount-related fluorescence spectra fluorescence and the photoelectrochemistry (PEC) tests, it is confirmed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of PCN/BiOBr is attributed to the promoted charge separation. Moreover, by means of the radical-trapping experiments it is demonstrated that the formed ·O2- species, as the electron-modulated direct products, are the primary active species during the photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-DCP. This work would provide a feasible design strategy to fabricate high-activity photocatalysts for 2,4-DCP degradation.

Sonophotocatalytic water splitting by BaTiO3@SrTiO3 core shell nanowires

Sonophotocatalysis has garnered significant attention due to its potential to enhance advanced oxidation processes, particularly water splitting, by employing materials with combined sonocatalytic and photocatalytic properties. In this study, we synthesized and investigated core-shell BaTiO3@SrTiO3 nanowires (BST NWs) with varying Sr/Ba molar ratios (2.5:7.5, 5.0:5.0, 7.5:2.5 mM, denoted as BST-1, BST-2, and BST-3, respectively) as catalysts for hydrogen production through water splitting. The piezoelectric nanowires demonstrated hydrogen evolution via both sonocatalysis and photocatalysis. In the sonophotocatalysis process, the ultrasonic vibration induced mechanical forces on the BST nanowires, thereby establishing a built-in electric field. This built-in electric field facilitated the effective separation of photo-generated charge carriers and prolonged their lifetimes, leading to a synergistic enhancement of hydrogen evolution. The pristine BaTiO3 and SrTiO3 nanowires exhibited relatively low hydrogen evolution rates (HER) of 7.0 and 6.0 µmol·g-1min-1, respectively. In contrast, the core-shell nanowires exhibited a substantial improvement in the hydrogen evolution rate. The HER increased with the addition of Sr, and BST-1, BST-2, and BST-3 achieved HERs of 12.0, 13.5, and 18.0 µmol·g-1min-1, respectively. The superior performance of BST-3 nanowires can be attributed to their highest piezoelectric potential and largest surface area. Additionally, BST-3 nanowires demonstrated remarkable stability over multiple cycles, validating their practical applicability as efficient photocatalysts.

Application of Photocatalysis and Sonocatalysis for Treatment of Organic Dye Wastewater and the Synergistic Effect of Ultrasound and Light

Organic dyes play vital roles in the textile industry, while the discharge of organic dye wastewater in the production and utilization of dyes has caused significant damage to the aquatic ecosystem. This review aims to summarize the mechanisms of photocatalysis, sonocatalysis, and sonophotocatalysis in the treatment of organic dye wastewater and the recent advances in catalyst development, with a focus on the synergistic effect of ultrasound and light in the catalytic degradation of organic dyes. The performance of TiO₂-based catalysts for organic dye degradation in photocatalytic, sonocatalytic, and sonophotocatalytic systems is compared. With significant synergistic effect of ultrasound and light, sonophotocatalysis generally performs much better than sonocatalysis or photocatalysis alone in pollutant degradation, yet it has a much higher energy requirement. Future research directions are proposed to expand the fundamental knowledge on the sonophotocatalysis process and to enhance its practical application in degrading organic dyes in wastewater.

Facilitated Photocatalytic Degradation of Rhodamine B over One-Step Synthesized Honeycomb-Like BiFeO3/g-C3N4 Catalyst

In the present work, a facile one-step methodology was used to synthesize honeycomb-like BiFeO₃/g-C₃N₄ composites, where the well-dispersed BiFeO₃ strongly interacted with the hg-C₃N₄. The 10BiFeO₃/hg-C₃N₄ could completely degrade RhB under visible light illumination within 60 min. The degradation rate constant was remarkably improved and approximately three times and seven times that of pristine hg-C₃N₄ and BiFeO₃, respectively. This is ascribed to the following factors: (1) the unique honeycomb-like morphology facilitates the diffusion of the reactants and effectively improves the utilization of light energy by multiple reflections of light; (2) the charged dye molecules can be tightly bound to the spontaneous polarized BiFeO₃ surface to form the Stern layer; (3) the Z-scheme heterojunction and the ferroelectric synergistically promoted the efficient separation and migration of the photogenerated charges. This method can synchronously tune the micro-nano structure, surface property, and internal field construction for g-C₃N₄-based photocatalysts, exhibiting outstanding potential in environmental purification.

Effective Inclusion of Sizable Amounts of Mo within TiO2 Nanoparticles Can Be Obtained by Reverse Micelle Sol-Gel Synthesis

Six Mo/TiO2 samples (with 0, 1.0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5, and 10 wt % Mo nominal contents) were obtained by reverse micelle sol-gel synthesis, followed by calcination at 500 °C. The samples were characterized by means of powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD), quantitative phase analysis as obtained by Rietveld refinement, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, N2 adsorption/desorption at -196 °C, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and diffuse reflectance (DR) UV-vis spectroscopy. As a whole, the adopted characterization techniques showed the inclusion of a sizeable Mo amount, without the segregation of any MoO x phase. Specifically, PXRD showed the occurrence of anatase and brookite with all the studied samples; notwithstanding the mild calcination temperature, the formation of rutile occurred at Mo wt % ≥2.5 likely due to the presence of brookite favoring, in turn, anatase to rutile transition. DR UV-vis and XP spectroscopies allowed determining the samples' band gap energy (E g) and valence band energy, respectively, from which the conduction band energy was calculated; and the observed E g value increase at 10 wt % Mo was ascribed to the Moss-Burstein effect.

Solvothermal preparation of Ti3+ self-doped TiO2-x nanotube arrays for enhanced photoelectrochemical performance

Ti³⁺ self-doped TiO_2-x nanotube arrays (TiO_2-x NTs) were prepared by solvothermal treatment in KBH₄ ethanol solution followed by calcination, and were characterized by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and UV-vis diffusion reflection spectroscopy (DRS). The photoelectrochemical properties of TiO_2-x NTs prepared in different KBH₄ concentrations were investigated. The TiO_2-x NTs exhibited high visible light response, visible light photocurrent and photoelectrocatalytic activities. The active species and photocatalytic mechanism for the dye degradation were proposed, and the improved photoelectrochemical performance was attributed to the synergistic effect of the narrowed energy gap and enhanced electron transportation. The ability to improve the photoelectrochemical properties of TiO_2-x electrode materials should open up new opportunities for high-performance solar cells and photocatalysts.

Design and performance of a novel direct Z-scheme NiGa2O4/CeO2 nanocomposite with enhanced sonocatalytic activity

A novel direct Z-scheme NiGa₂O₄/CeO₂ nanocomposite was designed and prepared via simple sol-hydrothermal and calcination methods, and its sonocatalytic activity was tested by studying the degradation of a model antimicrobial agent, malachite green (MG), under ultrasonic irradiation. Near complete (96.2%) degradation of MG (at 10 mg/L) could be achieved by the NiGa₂O₄/CeO₂ nanocomposite (at 1.0 g/L) after ultrasonic irradiation (40 kHz, 300 W) for 60 min at 25 °C. Under the same conditions, only 51.2 and 72.0% of the MG degraded in the presence of NiGa₂O₄ and CeO₂ (at 1.0 g/L), respectively. These results demonstrate that the direct Z-scheme NiGa₂O₄/CeO₂ nanocomposite has excellent sonocatalytic activity, which is attributed to the matching band-gaps between NiGa₂O₄ and CeO₂. The sonocatalytic activity of NiGa₂O₄/CeO₂ nanocomposite decreased by 17% after four cycles of reuse, which is indicative of relatively good reusability. Scavenging experiments revealed that sonocatalytic degradation of MG results from the combined action of hydroxyl radicals (OH) and holes (h⁺), with the latter having a greater contribution. The pathways and mechanism of MG degradation were proposed based on the degradation intermediates detected. The results demonstrate that the prepared direct Z-scheme NiGa₂O₄/CeO₂ nanocomposite worked as designed and exhibited high and stable sonocatalytic activity during MG degradation, and could thus serve as a promising candidate in sonocatalytic treatment of other organic pollutants in wastewaters. The findings also provide new insights on the mechanism of sonocatalytic degradation and the design of efficient Z-scheme sonocatalysts.

Recent Developments of Advanced Ti3+-Self-Doped TiO2 for Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalysis

Research into the development of efficient semiconductor photocatalytic materials is a promising approach to solving environmental and energy problems worldwide. Among these materials, TiO2 photocatalysts are one of the most commonly used due to their efficient photoactivity, high stability, low cost and environmental friendliness. However, since the UV content of sunlight is less than 5%, the development of visible light-activated TiO2-based photocatalysts is essential to increase the solar energy efficiency. Here, we review recent works on advanced visible light-activated Ti3+-self-doped TiO2 (Ti3+–TiO2) photocatalysts with improved electronic band structures for efficient charge separation. We analyze the different methods used to produce Ti3+–TiO2 photocatalysts, where Ti3+ with a high oxygen defect density can be used for energy production from visible light. We categorize advanced modifications in electronic states of Ti3+–TiO2 by improving their photocatalytic activity. Ti3+–TiO2 photocatalysts with large charge separation and low recombination of photogenerated electrons and holes can be practically applied for energy conversion and advanced oxidation processes in natural environments and deserve significant attention.

Investigation of the Synergistic Effect of Sonolysis and Photocatalysis of Titanium Dioxide for Organic Dye Degradation

Herein, we report the effect of sonoluminescence and an initial dye concentration on the sonophotocatalysis of TiO2 for the degradation of eosin B, a textile dye. We first investigated the light illuminated during ultrasound irradiation (sonoluminescence) by photographic images, a radical indicator (luminol), and photoluminescence spectra of the detection range of 300–1050 nm. Next, we examined the synergistic effect of sonolysis on photocatalysis by comparing the dye degradation of sonophotocatalysis to that of individual contributions of sonolysis and photocatalysis. Since it was found that the synergist effect is highly engaged with a dye concentration and sonication power, we conducted the comparison test in different concentrations of eosin B (5 and 20 mg/L) and ultrasound powers (35.4, 106.1, and 176.8 W/cm2). When the concentration of dyes was low, negative synergistic effects were found at all ultrasound powers, whereas at the high concentration, positive synergistic effects were observed at high ultrasound power. This difference in synergistic effects was explained by the influence of ultrasound on dynamics of dye adsorption on the TiO2 surface.

Ultrasound-promoted synthesis of γ-graphyne for supercapacitor and photoelectrochemical applications

As a novel type of carbon materials, graphynes possesses the merits of high carrier mobility and large surface areas, etc. However, to date, the main research of graphynes is focused on theoretical calculation whereas few strategies have been reported for the fabrication of graphynes. In this work, a facile method named ultrasound-promoted synthesis was developed to fabricate γ-graphyne using PhBr₆ and CaC₂ as the raw materials. The reaction system in argon atmosphere ultrasonically vibrated for 24 h in the ultrasonic bath at a power of 180 W and frequency of 53 kHz. The structure, morphology, and component of the obtained samples were detected by X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-IR spectra, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and the selected area electron diffraction. The electrochemical and photoelectrochemical measurements indicate that γ-graphyne can be used as superior electrode mateirals in supercapacitor and photoelectrochemical catalysis. From the results of galvanostatic charge/discharge measurements, the γ-graphyne supercapacitor delivers a maximum specific capacitance of 81 F/g at 0.2 A/g and a capacitance retention rate of 87.5% after 5000 cycles at 3 A/g. Moreover, UV-vis light photoelectrochemical response and high carrier density are observed for γ-graphyne. It is also demonstrated that the charge-transfer resistance is low by Tafel slopes and Nyquist plots. This work puts forward a new and facile strategy for the fabrication of γ-graphyne and explores its application in the field of solar energy conversion and storage.

Fabrication of black TiO2−x/CuFe2O4 decorated on diatomaceous earth with enhanced sonocatalytic activity for ibuprofen mitigation

This study reports facile fabrication of black TiO_2−x/CuFe₂O₄ (Ti³⁺ self-doped titania coupled with copper ferrite), an efficient sonocatalyst for ibuprofen (IBP) mitigation.

Hydrodynamic cavitation degradation of Rhodamine B assisted by Fe3+-doped TiO2: Mechanisms, geometric and operation parameters

In this paper, a novel method, hydrodynamic cavitation (HC) combined with Fe³⁺-doped TiO₂, for the degradation of organic pollutants in aqueous solution is reported. The venturi tubes with different geometric parameters (size, shape and half divergent angle) are designed to obtain a strong HC effect. The structure, morphology and chemical composition of prepared Fe³⁺-doped TiO₂ as catalyst are characterized via using XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, UV-vis DRS and PL methods. The effects of added TiO₂ (heat-treated at different temperatures for different times) and Fe³⁺-doped TiO₂ (with different mole ratios of Fe and Ti) on the HC catalytic degradation of RhB are discussed. The influences of operation parameters including inlet pressure, initial RhB concentration and operating temperature on the HC catalytic degradation of RhB are studied by Box-Behnken design (BBD) and response surface methodology (RSM). Under 3.0 bar inlet pressure for 10 mg/L initial concentration of RhB solution at 40 °C operating temperature in the presence of Fe³⁺-doped TiO₂ with 0.05:1.00 M ratio of Fe and Ti, the best HC degradation ratio can be obtained (91.11%). Furthermore, a possible mechanism of HC degradation of organic pollutants in the presence of Fe³⁺-doped TiO₂ is proposed. Perhaps, this study may provide a feasible method for a large-scale treatment of dye wastewater.

Preparation of a novel Z-scheme KTaO3/FeVO4/Bi2O3 nanocomposite for efficient sonocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium

In this work, a novel Z-scheme sonocatalyst, KTaO₃/FeVO₄/Bi₂O₃, is prepared via ultrasonic-assisted isoelectric point method. The prepared samples are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The catalytic activity of Z-scheme KTaO₃/FeVO₄/Bi₂O₃ sonocatalyst is studied in degradation of ceftriaxone sodium under ultrasonic irradiation. In addition, the influences of ultrasonic irradiation time, scavengers and sonocatalyst used times on sonocatalytic degradation of ceftriaxone sodium are examined. Under the experimental conditions of 150 min ultrasonic irradiation time, 1.00 g/L KTaO₃/FeVO₄/Bi₂O₃ addition amount and 10.00 mg/L ceftriaxone sodium concentration, the sonocatalytic degradation ratio of ceftriaxone sodium achieves 81.30%. Finally, the possible sonocatalytic degradation mechanism of ceftriaxone sodium caused by Z-scheme KTaO₃/FeVO₄/Bi₂O₃ sonocatalyst is proposed. The enhanced sonocatalytic activity may be attributed to the fact that the FeVO₄ as a special conductive channel provides a strong driving force to transfer electrons through valence state changes of iron and vanadium, which accelerates electron transfer from conduction band (CB) of Bi₂O₃ to valence band (VB) of KTaO₃. Perhaps, the KTaO₃/FeVO₄/Bi₂O₃ composite is an excellent Z-scheme sonocatalyst which can be used to effectively degrade the organic pollutants in wastewater under ultrasonic irradiation.

Owing to their persistency and toxicity, development of an effective strategy to eliminate antibiotic residues from the aquatic system has become a major environmental concern. Doping TiO₂ with hetero atoms and forming a hybrid structure with g-C₃N₄ could serve as an efficient visible light active photocatalytic candidate. In this study, a novel S-Ag/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ hybrid catalyst was prepared for visible light degradation and detoxification of triclosan (TS) antibiotic. The effect of various operational parameters towards the photocatalytic degradation was systematically evaluated through response surface methodology (RSM) based on central composite design (CCD). The highest TS degradation (92.3%) was observed under optimal conditions (TS concentration = 10 mg L^-1, pH = 7.8, and catalyst weight = 0.20 g L^-1) after 60 min. Efficient charge separation resulted from the doped nanoparticles (silver and sulphur), the existing integrated electric field of the heterojunction and the overlying light response of hybridized TiO₂ and g-C₃N₄, thus the S-Ag/TiO₂@g-C₃N₄ composite showed impressively higher activity. The main degradation products of TS were identified by LC/ESI-MS analysis. In addition, the toxicity of the degradation products was investigated through an Escherichia coli (E. coli) colony forming unit assay and the results revealed that under optimal conditions a significant reduction in biotoxicity was noticed.

Oxygen-rich bismuth oxychloride Bi12O17Cl2 materials: construction, characterization, and sonocatalytic degradation performance

In this study, a series of oxygen-rich bismuth oxychloride Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂ samples were prepared at different calcination temperatures and characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectra, scanning electron microscope, X-ray energy dispersion spectroscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The calcination temperature greatly affected microstructures and band structures of as-prepared samples, further influencing sonocatalytic degradation efficiencies over dye Rhodamine B. Some dependant factors such as ultrasonic power, catalyst dosage, pH value, initial concentration of Rhodamine B, and reaction temperature were systematically investigated and the robust sample Bi₁₂O₁₇Cl₂-550 with a favorable microstructure and band structure provided the best sonocatalytic removal efficiency around 90% at the optimal condition. Based upon reactive species entrapping and hydroxyl radical detection experiments, a primary sonocatalysis mechanism was eventually speculated.

Heterogeneous sonocatalytic degradation of Bisphenol-A and the influence of the reaction parameters and ultrasonic frequency

In the present study, the sonocatalytic oxidation of Bisphenol-A (BPA) was investigated in the presence of a LaFeO₃ perovskite catalyst. The effects of the reaction temperature, initial pH, catalyst loading, presence of inorganic anions and sonication source (power and frequency) on the removal of BPA using heterogeneous sonocatalytic process were investigated. Under the studied temperature range of 288-318 K, 308 K was selected as the optimum temperature and the highest BPA removal and total oxygen demand (TOC) reduction of, 95.8% and 30.4% were achieved at that temperature. The thermodynamic parameters were calculated in the studied temperature range of 288-308 K. It was seen that an acidic pH of 3.0 was favorable for the BPA oxidation with the highest BPA removal and TOC reduction of 95.4% and 31.5%, respectively. Doubling the catalyst amount from 0.25 g/L to 0.5 g/L increased the BPA removal degree from 81.6% to 90.8%. However, further increase in catalyst amount has no remarkable positive effect on the removal of BPA. The removal of BPA was described by the first order kinetics with an activation energy of 14.9 kJ/mol. The results obtained from this study showed that the LaFeO₃ perovskite catalyst was a good sonocatalyst giving high oxidation rates of BPA.

Fabrication of graphene-oxide/β-Bi2O3/TiO2/Bi2Ti2O7 heterojuncted nanocomposite and its sonocatalytic degradation for selected pharmaceuticals

A graphene-oxide (GO)/β-Bi₂O₃/TiO₂/Bi₂Ti₂O₇ heterojuncted nanocomposite, designated as GBT, was synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process. The sonocatalytic activity of the GBT was evaluated at several frequencies (28, 580, and 970 kHz) and compared with Bi-doped GO (GB) and Ti-doped GO (GT). Transmission electron microscopy images showed heterojuncted crystal structures of Bi and Ti on GO, and X-ray diffraction patterns verified that the crystal structures consisted of β-Bi₂O₃, TiO₂, and Bi₂Ti₂O₇ nanocomposites. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed a higher proportion of metal on GBT surfaces compared with GB and GT surfaces. The energy band gaps of GT, GB, and GBT were 3.0, 2.8, and 2.5 eV, respectively. Two pharmaceuticals (PhACs; carbamazepine [CBZ] and acetaminophen [ACE]) were selected and treated under sonolytic conditions at frequencies of 28, 580, and 970 kHz at a power level of 180 W L^-1. The selected pharmaceuticals, present at initial concentrations of 20 μM, were reduced by over 99% by ultrasonic irradiation in the presence of GBT. The 580 kHz treatment achieved the most rapid organic removal among the frequencies tested. The removal kinetic of CBZ was higher than that of ACE owing to its relatively high hydrophobicity. High sonocatalytic activity of GBT was observed through measurement of H₂O₂ in solution. Because of its low band gaps and high surface activity, GBT exhibited higher sonolytic activity in removing selected PhACs than GT or GB.
