Facile photo-ultrasonic assisted reduction for preparation of rGO/Ag2CO3 nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic oxidation activity for tetracycline

Plant-mediated synthesis of silver-doped ZnO nanoparticles with high sonocatalytic activity: Sonocatalytic behavior, kinetic and thermodynamic study

Together with the rapid growth of technology, the discharge of wastewater from industry into environment had become a hot topic among society nowadays. More attention had been given to the development of water treatment techniques. In this study, sonocatalysis was proposed to degrade the organic pollutants using silver-doped zinc oxide (Ag-ZnO) nanoparticles which were synthesized via green synthesis process using Clitoria ternatea Linn (Asian Pigeonwings flower). The characterization results revealed that the incorporation of Ag into the ZnO lattice decreased the crystallite size and increased the specific surface area of ZnO nanoparticles. It is noteworthy that about 98% of sonocatalytic degradation efficiency of malachite green (MG) was successfully achieved within 30 min in the presence of 5 wt.% Ag-ZnO with 1.0 g/L of catalyst loading under 500 mg/L of initial dye concentration, 80 W of ultrasonic power, 45 kHz of ultrasound frequency, and 2.0 mM of oxidant concentration. The kinetic study showed that the sonocatalytic degradation of organic dye was fitted well into second-order kinetic model with high R2 value (0.9531). In the thermodynamic study, negative value of standard Gibbs free energy and low value of activation energy (+ 24.43 kJ/mol) were obtained in the sonocatalytic degradation of MG using the green-synthesized Ag-ZnO sample. Reductive dechlorination of 2,4-dichlorophenol by using MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites prepared in the presence of ultrasonic irradiation

The research on developing a purification technology for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) polluted water with high efficiency and the low energy consumption is crucial for achieving several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to achieve these goals, MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites were prepared by Fe nanoparticles modified with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and palladium (Pd) in the presence of ultrasonic irradiation. The MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites were characterized by using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and others. Characterization results confirmed that the MWCNTs-Pd/Fe was successfully prepared, with the particle size of 80 nm and the specific surface area of 89.5 m2/g confirmed. We studied the reductive dechlorination of 2,4-Dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) by MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites under different conditions, and the optimized experimental results were found when the Pd loading was 0.4 %, the pH was 3, and the temperature was 30 °C. The phenol yield increased from 76.5 % (without ultrasonic irradiation) to 92.3 % (with ultrasonic irradiation) in 300 min and the 2,4-DCP removal rate reached 98.7 % under the optimal conditions. Therefore, ultrasonic irradiation enhanced the performance of MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites for 2,4-DCP removal. We also established the degradation mechanism of chlorophenol by analyzing the intermediates, and proposed the degradation kinetics model. The degradation of 2,4-DCP followed the pseudo-first-order kinetics with the rate constant of 0.05988 min-1. Also, this study demonstrated the potential of using ultrasonic irradiation to improve the properties and recovery of MWCNTs-Pd/Fe nanocomposites, contributing to achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDG-3, SDG-6.

Efficient sonochemical catalytic degradation of tetracycline using TiO2 fractured nanoshells

Overexposure to antibiotics originating in wastewater has profound environmental and health implications. Conventional treatment methods are not fully effective in removing certain antibiotics, such as the commonly used antibiotic, tetracycline, leading to its accumulation in water catchments. Alternative antibiotic removal strategies are garnering attention, including sonocatalytic oxidative processes. In this work, we investigated the degradation of tetracycline using a combination of TiO2 fractured nanoshells (TFNs) and an advanced sonochemical reactor design. The study encompassed an examination of multiple process parameters to understand their effects on the degradation of tetracycline. These included tetracycline adsorption on TFNs, reaction time, initial tetracycline concentration, solvent pH, acoustic pressure amplitude, number of acoustic cycles, catalyst dosage, TFNs' reusability, and the impact of adjuvants such as light and H2O2. Though TFNs adsorbed tetracycline, the addition of ultrasound was able to degrade tetracycline completely (with 100% degradation) within six minutes. Under the optimal operating conditions, the proposed sonocatalytic system consumed 80% less energy compared to the values reported in recently published sonocatalytic research. It also had the lowest CO2 footprint when compared to the other sono-/photo-based technologies. This study suggests that optimizing the reaction system and operating the reaction under low power and at a lower duty cycle are effective in achieving efficient cavitation for sonocatalytic reactions.

Highly efficient ultrasound-driven Cu-MOF/ZnWO4 heterostructure: An efficient visible-light photocatalyst with robust stability for complete degradation of tetracycline

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a significant class of porous, crystalline materials composed of metal ions (clusters) and organic ligands. The potential use of copper MOF (Cu-BTC) for the sonophotocatalytic degradation of Tetracycline (TC) antibiotic was investigated in this study. To enhance its catalytic efficiency, S-scheme heterojunction was created by combining Cu-BTC with Zinc tungstate (ZnWO4), employing an ultrasound-assisted hydrothermal method. The results demonstrated that the Cu-BTC/ZnWO4 heterojunction exhibited complete removal of TC within 60 min under simultaneous irradiation of visible light and ultrasound. Interestingly, the sonophotocatalytic degradation of TC using the Cu-BTC/ZnWO4 heterojunction showed superior efficiency (with a synergy index of ∼0.70) compared to individual sonocatalytic and photocatalytic degradation processes using the same heterojunction. This enhancement in sonophotocatalytic activity can be attributed to the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction between Cu-BTC and ZnWO4. Within this heterojunction, electrons migrated from Cu-BTC to ZnWO4, facilitated by the interface between the two materials. Under visible light irradiation, the built-in electric field, band edge bending, and coulomb interaction synergistically inhibited the recombination of electron-hole pairs. Consequently, the accumulated electrons in Cu-BTC and holes in ZnWO4 actively participated in the redox reactions, generating free radicals that effectively attacked the TC molecules. This study offers valuable perspectives on the application of a newly developed S-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst, demonstrating its effectiveness in efficiently eliminating diverse recalcitrant pollutants via sonophotocatalytic degradation.

Synergistic effects of layered Ti3C2TX MXene/MIL-101(Cr) heterostructure as a sonocatalyst for efficient degradation of sulfadiazine and acetaminophen in water

In this work, different mass loadings of MXene-coupled MIL-101(Cr) (MXe/MIL-101(Cr)) nanocomposites were generated through a hydrothermal process in order to investigate the potential of this nanocomposite as a novel sonocatalyst for the elimination of sulfadiazine (SD) and acetaminophen (AAP) in aqueous media. The sonocatalytic activity of different MXe/MIL-101(Cr) compositions and surface functionalities was investigated. In addition, the sonocatalytic activities at various pH values, temperatures, pollutant concentrations, catalyst dosages, initial H2O2 concentrations, and organic matter contents were investigated. The experiments on the sonocatalytic elimination of SD and AAP revealed that MXe/MIL-101(Cr) exhibited a catalytic efficiency of ∼ 98% in 80 min when the MXene loading was 30 wt% in the nanocomposite. Under optimized reaction conditions, the degradation efficiency of MXe/MIL-101(Cr) reached 91.5% for SD and 90.6% for AAP in 60 min; these values were 1.2 and 1.8 times greater than those of MXene and MIL-101(Cr), respectively. The high surface area of the MXe/MIL-101(Cr) nanocomposite increased from 4.68 m2/g to 294.21 m2/g, and the band gap of the tagged MIL-101(Cr) on the MXene surface was minimized. The superior sonocatalytic activity of MXe/MIL-101(Cr) was attributed to the effective contact interface, the effective separation rate of e- - h+ pairs through the type II heterostructure interface, and the favorable high free •OH radical production rates that promoted the degradation of SD and AAP. The solid heterointerface between MIL-101(Cr) and MXene was confirmed through Raman and FTIR analysis and was found to promote accessible •OH radical production under sonication, thus maximizing the catalytic activity of nanocomposites. The present results present an effective strategy for the design of a highly efficient, low-cost, reliable sonocatalyst that can eradicate pharmaceutical pollutants in our environment.

Ag2CO3-Based Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals Degradation: A Review

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) in the aquatic environment have garnered a lot of attention during the past few years. Due to their toxic behavior, which interferes with endocrine functions in both humans and aquatic species, these types of compounds have been recognized as major polluting agents in wastewater effluents. Therefore, the development of efficient and sustainable removal methods for these emerging contaminants is essential. Photocatalytic removal of emerging contaminants using silver carbonate (Ag2CO3)-based photocatalyst is a promising process due to the unique characteristics of this catalyst, such as absorption of a larger fraction of the solar spectrum, wide band gap, non-toxicity, and low cost. The photocatalytic performance of Ag2CO3 has recently been improved through the doping of elements and optimization variation of operational parameters resulting in decreasing the rate of electron–hole pair recombination and an increase in the semiconductor’s excitation state efficiency, which enables the degradation of contaminants under UV or visible light exposure. This review summarized some of the relevant investigations related to Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials for EDC removal from water. The inclusion of Ag2CO3-based photocatalytic materials in the water recovery procedure suggests that the creation of a cutting-edge protocol is essential for successfully eliminating EDCs from the ecosystem.

Membranes prepared from graphene-based nanomaterials for water purification: a mini-review

Graphene-based nanomaterials (GBnMs) are currently regarded as a critical building block for the fabrication of membranes for water purification due to their advantageous properties such as easy surface modification of functional groups, adjustable interlayer pore channels for solvent transportation, robust mechanical properties, and superior photothermal capabilities. By combining graphene derivatives with other emerging materials, heteroatom doping and rational design of a three-dimensional network can enhance water transportation and evaporation rates through channels of GBnM laminates and such layered structures have been applied in various water purification technologies. Herein, this mini-review summarizes recent progress in the synthesis of GBnMs and their applications in water treatment technologies, specifically, nanofiltration (NF) and solar desalination (SD). Finally, personal perspectives on the challenges and future directions of this promising nanomaterial are also provided.

Carbon-Based Nanocatalysts (CnCs) for Biomass Valorization and Hazardous Organics Remediation

The continuous increase of the demand in merchandise and fuels augments the need of modern approaches for the mass-production of renewable chemicals derived from abundant feedstocks, like biomass, as well as for the water and soil remediation pollution resulting from the anthropogenic discharge of organic compounds. Towards these directions and within the concept of circular (bio)economy, the development of efficient and sustainable catalytic processes is of paramount importance. Within this context, the design of novel catalysts play a key role, with carbon-based nanocatalysts (CnCs) representing one of the most promising class of materials. In this review, a wide range of CnCs utilized for biomass valorization towards valuable chemicals production, and for environmental remediation applications are summarized and discussed. Emphasis is given in particular on the catalytic production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose or starch-rich food waste, the hydrogenolysis of lignin towards high bio-oil yields enriched predominately in alkyl and oxygenated phenolic monomers, the photocatalytic, sonocatalytic or sonophotocatalytic selective partial oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) and the decomposition of organic pollutants in aqueous matrixes. The carbonaceous materials were utilized as stand-alone catalysts or as supports of (nano)metals are various types of activated micro/mesoporous carbons, graphene/graphite and the chemically modified counterparts like graphite oxide and reduced graphite oxide, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, graphitic carbon nitride, and fullerenes.

Complete removal of Tetracycline by sonophotocatalysis using ultrasound-assisted hierarchical graphitic carbon nitride nanorods with carbon vacancies

Tuning a graphitic carbon nitride (CN) structure is an effective strategy to advance its physicochemical and electronic properties. Herein, hierarchical CN nanorods with carbon vacancy were synthesized via ultrasound-assisted thermal polycondensation method wherein melamine-HONH₂·HCl complex acts as a template. The hierarchical CN nanorods can facilitate multiple light scattering, provide large specific surface area with extensive reactive sites and endow abundant mass-transport channels for charge migration. The existence of carbon vacancies can serve as shallow charge trapping sites and prompt charge separation. Consequently, hierarchical CN nanorod possessed excellent sonophotodegradation efficiency of ∼100% towards Tetracycline (TC) antibiotic within 60 min under ultrasonic irradiation and visible light illumination. Moreover, the sonophotocatalytic degradation was higher than the sum of sonocatalytic and photocatalytic TC degradation using hierarchical CN nanorods due to its synergistic performance. A plausible sonophotocatalytic mechanism and TC degradation pathway using hierarchical CN nanorod were proposed. Lastly, hierarchical CN nanorod is durable and stable which can withstand the sonophotocatalytic condition even after the fifth run. This work offers an insight into hierarchical CN nanorod to advance sonophotocatalytic degradation performance for highly efficient removal of various recalcitrant pollutants.

Effect of UVC and UVA Photocatalytic Processes on Tetracycline Removal Using CuS-Coated Magnetic Activated Carbon Nanocomposite: A Comparative Study

In this study, we synthesized a novel MAC nanocomposite using almond’s green hull coated with CuS. The whole set of experiments have been conducted inside a batch (discontinuous reactor system) at room temperature. The effectiveness of different parameters in tetracycline removal pH (3, 5, 7, and 9), pollutant concentration (5–100 mg/L), nanocomposite dosage (0.025–1 g/L), and contact time (5–60 min) using newly synthesized nanocomposite were investigated. Based on the results, in the optimal conditions of pH = 9, nanocomposite dosage of 1 g/L, pollutant concentration of 20 mg/L, contact time of 60 min, and room temperature, 95% removal efficiency was obtained. In MAC/CuS/UV_C process, the removal of COD and TOC were 76.89% and 566.84% respectively meanwhile, these values in MAC/CuS/UV_A process were 74.19% and 62.11%, respectively. The results of nanocomposite stability and magnetic recovery illustrated that the removal efficiency was reduced by 1.5% in the presence of UV_C and 5% in the presence of UV_A lights during all six cycles. Therefore, this nanocomposite was highly capable of recycling and reuse. It can be concluded that considering the high potential of the synthesized nanocomposite, the photocatalytic efficiency of the MAC/CuS/UV_C process in tetracycline synthesis was higher than MAC/CuS/UV_A process.

WO3/Ag2CO3 Mixed Photocatalyst with Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity for Organic Dye Degradation

The development of an efficient photocatalyst with superior activity under visible light has been regarded as a significant strategy for pollutant degradation and environmental remediation. Herein, a series of WO₃/Ag₂CO₃ mixed photocatalysts with different proportions were prepared by a simple mixing method and characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, XPS, and DRS techniques. The photocatalytic performance of the WO₃/Ag₂CO₃ mixed photocatalyst was investigated by the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation (λ > 400 nm). The photocatalytic efficiency of the mixed WO₃/Ag₂CO₃ photocatalyst was rapidly increased with the proportion of Ag₂CO₃ up to 5%. The degradation percentage of RhB by WO₃/Ag₂CO₃-5% reached 99.7% within 8 min. The pseudo-first-order reaction rate constant of WO₃/Ag₂CO₃-5% (0.9591 min^-1) was 118- and 14-fold higher than those of WO₃ (0.0081 min^-1) and Ag₂CO₃ (0.0663 min^-1). The catalytic activities of the mixed photocatalysts are not only higher than those of the WO₃ and Ag₂CO₃ but also higher than that of the WO₃/Ag₂CO₃ composite prepared by the precipitation method. The activity enhancement may be because of the easier separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The photocatalytic mechanism was investigated by free radical capture performance and fluorescence measurement. It was found that light-induced holes (h⁺) was the major active species and superoxide radicals (·O₂ ^-) also played a certain role in photocatalytic degradation of RhB.

Facile photo-ultrasonic assisted synthesis of flower-like Pt/N-MoS2 microsphere as an efficient sonophotocatalyst for nitrogen fixation

Semiconductor photocatalytic technology is a sustainable and less energy consuming one for nitrogen (N₂) reduction to produce ammonia (NH₃). In this study, flower-like hierarchical N doped MoS₂ (N-MoS₂) microsphere was synthesized as a photocatalyst by one-step solvothermal method, which was assembled by numerous interleaving nanosheets petals with thin thickness. Besides, Pt nanoparticles were loaded on the surface of N-MoS₂ via photo-ultrasonic reduction method. The as-prepared Pt/N-MoS₂ photocatalyst exhibited higher N₂ fixation ability than that over pure MoS₂ and N-MoS₂, which can be attributed to that the N doping narrows the band gap, and the Schottky barrier due to the existence of Pt nanoparticles improves the charge transfer and carrier separation. The reduction of N₂ with ultrasonic irradiation was also investigated under visible light irradiation to evaluate the sonophotocatalytic activity of the Pt/N-MoS₂ microsphere. The results showed that the N₂ reduction rate of sonophotocatalysis (133.8 µmol/g_(cat)h) was higher than that of sonocatalysis and photocatalysis, which can be ascribed to the synergistic effect of ultrasound and visible light irradiation. The effects of catalyst dosage, ultrasonic power and ultrasonic pulse on the photocatalytic efficiency were also studied. Meanwhile, a possible mechanism for improved sonophotocatalytic performance was also proposed.

A review of graphene-based nanomaterials for removal of antibiotics from aqueous environments

Antibiotics as emerging pharmaceutical pollutants have seriously not only threatened human life and animal health security, but also caused environmental pollution. It has drawn enormous attention and research interests in the study of antibiotics removal from aqueous environments. Graphene, an interesting one-atom-thick, 2D single-layer carbon sheet with sp² hybridized carbon atoms, has become an important agent for removal of antibiotic, owing to its unique physiochemical properties. Recently, a variety of graphene-based nanomaterials (GNMs) are reported to efficiently remove antibiotics from aqueous solutions by different technologies. In this review, we summarize different structure and properties of GNMs for the removal of antibiotics by adsorption. Meanwhile, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as photocatalysis, Fenton process, ozonation, sulfate radical and combined AOPs by the aid of GNMs are summarized. Finally, the opportunities and challenges on the future scope of GNMs for removal of antibiotics from aqueous environments are proposed.
