Facile sonochemical synthesis of Cu doped CeO2 nanostructures as a novel dual-functional photocatalytic adsorbent

One-step hydrothermal synthesis of CeVO4/bentonite nanocomposite as a dual-functional photocatalytic adsorbent for the removal of methylene blue from aqueous solutions

Cerium vanadate/modified bentonite (CeVO4/mbt) nanocomposite with different composition percentages was synthesized through a simple one-step hydrothermal method at 180 ℃, and then its photocatalytic activity was evaluated by decolorizing methylene blue (MB) in an aqueous solution under light exposure. In order to increase the surface area as an important parameter in photocatalytic processes, bentonite was modified by ball mill method. The structural and optical properties of the synthesized composites were determined by XRD, FT-IR, DRS, FESEM, EDS, and BET measurements. XRD and EDS results confirmed the successful synthesis of pure CeVO4. FESEM images and EDS mapping showed a proper distribution of rice-like CeVO4 nanoparticles on bentonite. The removal efficiency of MB with only 0.1 g of CeVO4/mbt nanocomposite in 15 min was about 99%, which is significant compared to neat bentonite and pure CeVO4 with efficiency of 30% and 57%. The mentioned nanocomposite followed the first-order kinetics, had a reaction rate constant equal to 0.1483 min-1, and showed acceptable stability in five consecutive cycles.

Green synthesized Cu-doped CeO2nanoparticles for Congo red dye adsorption and antibacterial action

The removal of pollutants from water bodies is crucial for the well-being of humanity and is a topic of global research. Researchers have turned their attention to green synthesized nanoparticles for wastewater treatment due to their eco-friendly nature, biocompatibility, and cost-effectiveness. This work demonstrates the efficient removal of organic dye and both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria from water bodies using copper-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles synthesized withMurraya Koenigiiextract. Characterized via various methods, the 15% copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles (Cu 15% NPs) exhibited maximum Congo red dye adsorption (98% degradation in 35 min). Kinetic analysis favoured a pseudo-second-order model, indicating the chemical nature of adsorption. Equilibrium adsorption isotherms aligned with the Langmuir model, indicating homogenous monolayer dye adsorption on the doped adsorbent. The maximum uptake of adsorbate,Qmobtained from Langmuir model for Cu 15% NPs was 193 mg g-1. The study also showed enhanced antibacterial activity againstBacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coliandPseudomonas aeruginosafor Cu-doped ceria, attributed to generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by the redox cycling between Ce3+and Ce4+. This substantiated that the green synthesized copper doped cerium oxide nanoparticles are potential candidates for adsorptive removal of Congo red dye and as antibacterial agents.

Advances in ultrasound-assisted synthesis of photocatalysts and sonophotocatalytic processes: A review

Water pollution and the global energy crisis are two significant challenges that the world is facing today. Ultrasound-assisted synthesis offers a simple, versatile, and green synthetic tool for nanostructured materials that are often unavailable by traditional synthesis. Furthermore, the integration of ultrasound and photocatalysis has recently received considerable interest due to its potential for environmental remediation as a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally friendly technique. The underlying principles and mechanisms of sonophotocatalysis, including enhanced mass transfer, improved catalyst-pollutant interaction, and reactive species production have been discussed. Various organic pollutants as dyes, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and emerging organic pollutants are targeted based on their improved sonophotocatalytic degradation efficiency. Additionally, the important factors affecting sonophotocatalytic processes and the advantages and challenges associated with these processes are discussed. Overall, this review provides a comprehensive understanding of sono-assisted synthesis and photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants and prospects for progress in this field.

Experimental and computational study of metal oxide nanoparticles for the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants: a review

Photocatalysis is a more proficient technique that involves the breakdown or decomposition of different organic contaminants, various dyes, and harmful viruses and fungi using UV or visible light solar spectrum. Metal oxides are considered promising candidate photocatalysts owing to their low cost, efficiency, simple fabricating method, sufficient availability, and environment-friendliness for photocatalytic applications. Among metal oxides, TiO2 is the most studied photocatalyst and is highly applied in wastewater treatment and hydrogen production. However, TiO2 is relatively active only under ultraviolet light due to its wide bandgap, which limits its applicability because the production of ultraviolet is expensive. At present, the discovery of a photocatalyst of suitable bandgap with visible light or modification of the existing photocatalyst is becoming very attractive for photocatalysis technology. However, the major drawbacks of photocatalysts are the high recombination rate of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, the ultraviolet light activity limitations, and low surface coverage. In this review, the most commonly used synthesis method for metal oxide nanoparticles, photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, and applications and toxicity of different dyes are comprehensively highlighted. In addition, the challenges in the photocatalytic applications of metal oxides, strategies to suppress these challenges, and metal oxide studied by density functional theory for photocatalytic applications are described in detail.

Insights from a Bibliometrics-Based Analysis of Publishing and Research Trends on Cerium Oxide from 1990 to 2020

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the literature for research trends on cerium oxide from 1990 to 2020 and identify gaps in knowledge in the emerging application(s) of CeONP. Bibliometric methods were used to identify themes in database searches from PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection using SWIFT-Review, VOSviewer and SciMAT software programs. A systematic review was completed on published cerium oxide literature extracted from the Scopus database (n = 17,115), identifying themes relevant to its industrial, environmental and biomedical applications. A total of 172 publications were included in the systematic analysis and categorized into four time periods with research themes identified; "doping additives" (n = 5, 1990-1997), "catalysts" (n = 32, 1998-2005), "reactive oxygen species" (n = 66, 2006-2013) and "pathology" (n = 69, 2014-2020). China and the USA showed the highest number of citations and publications for cerium oxide research from 1990 to 2020. Longitudinal analysis showed CeONP has been extensively used for various applications due to its catalytic properties. In conclusion, this study showed the trend in research in CeONP over the past three decades with advancements in nanoparticle engineering like doping, and more recently surface modification or functionalization to further enhanced its antioxidant abilities. As a result of recent nanoparticle engineering developments, research into CeONP biological effects have highlighted its therapeutic potential for a range of human pathologies such as Alzheimer's disease. Whilst research over the past three decades show the versatility of cerium oxide in industrial and environmental applications, there are still research opportunities to investigate the potential beneficial effects of CeONP in its application(s) on human health.

A critical review on relationship of CeO2-based photocatalyst towards mechanistic degradation of organic pollutant

Nanostructured photocatalysts commonly offered opportunities to solve issues scrutinized with the environmental challenges caused by steep population growth and rapid urbanization. This photocatalyst is a controllable characteristic, which can provide humans with a clean and sustainable ecosystem. Over the last decades, one of the current thriving research focuses on visible-light-driven CeO₂-based photocatalysts due to their superior characteristics, including unique fluorite-type structure, rigid framework, and facile reducing oxidizing properties of cerium's tetravalent (Ce⁴⁺) and trivalent (Ce³⁺) valence states. Notwithstanding, owing to its inherent wide energy gap, the solar energy utilization efficiency is low, which limits its application in wastewater treatment. Numerous modifications of CeO₂ have been employed to enhance photodegradation performances, such as metals and non-metals doping, adding support materials, and coupling with another semiconductor. Besides, all these doping will form a different heterojunction and show a different way of electron-hole migration. Compared to conventional heterojunction, advanced heterojunction types such as p-n heterojunction, Z-scheme, Schottky junction, and surface plasmon resonance effect exhibit superior performance for degradation owing to their excellent charge carrier separation, and the reaction occurs at a relatively higher redox potential. This review attends to providing deep insights on heterojunction mechanisms and the latest progress on photodegradation of various contaminants in wastewater using CeO₂-based photocatalysts. Hence, making the CeO₂ photocatalyst more foresee and promising to further development and research.

Zn0.94Mn0.06O for adsorption and photo-degradation of methyl orange dye under visible irradiation: Kinetics and isotherms study

Three photocatalyst-adsorbents consist of Zn_0.97Mn_0.03O, Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O, and Zn_0.92Mn_0.08O were synthesized by hydrothermal method and calcined at 800 °C. The structural and optical properties of the sample Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O were characterized by using XRD; TEM; SEM; EDS; DLS; and DRS. The surface of the sample Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O consists of nano-particles (<100 nm) and nano-holes (18.4 nm), also the band-gap of it was obtained 2.89 eV. Adsorption and photo-degradation of methyl orange (MO) dye was investigated in darkness and under visible light irradiation (200 W tungsten). The sample Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O showed the most decolorization efficiency in the shortest time, so that 0.15 g of it adsorbed and destroyed the MO dye molecules (99 ± 1 %) in 40 s under irradiation. The most adsorption capacity of Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O was obtained 30.06 mg/g and the mechanism of the dye adsorption was investigated by using BET analysis and zeta potential. Also the adsorption isotherm and kinetics were calculated for describing the adsorption of MO onto the Zn_0.94Mn_0.06O.

Effect of Zr doping on photoantioxidant and antibiofilm properties of CeO2 NPs fabricated using aqueous leaf extract of Pometia pinnata

Synthesized cerium oxide nanoparticles (S-CeO₂ NPs) and 1%, 5% and 10% zirconium doped CeO₂ (Zr-doped CeO₂) NPs were fabricated using aqueous leaf extract of Pometia pinnata. The synthesized NPs were characterized using standard techniques which confirmed successful synthesis of NPs with particle size ranging from 12 to 23 nm and band gap energy of 2.54-2.66 eV. Photoantioxidant activities showed enhanced activities under visible light irradiation in comparison to the dark condition in the dose-dependent study. Biofilm inhibition studies showed ~ 73% biofilm inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus at 512 µg/mL for S-CeO₂, whereas 10% Zr-doped CeO₂ NPs showed biofilm inhibition of 52.7%. The bactericidal tests showed killing properties at 1024 µg/mL of S-CeO₂ NPs and at 512 µg/mL of 1% Zr-doped CeO₂. Reduced bactericidal activities were observed for 5% and 10% Zr-doped CeO₂. These studies showed that the fabricated NPs have both good photoantioxidant and antibacterial properties.

Green-synthesized CeO2 nanoparticles for photocatalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity activities

Cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs) are a sought-after material in numerous fields due to their potential applications such as in catalysis, cancer therapy, photocatalytic degradation of pollutants, sensors, polishing agents. Green synthesis usually involves the production of CeO2 assisted by organic extracts obtained from plants, leaves, flowers, bacteria, algae, food, fruits, etc. The phytochemicals present in the organic extracts adhere to the NPs and act as reducing and/or oxidizing agents and capping agents to stabilize the NPs, modify the particle size, morphology and band gap energy of the as-synthesized materials, which would be advantageous for numerous applications. This review focuses on the green extract-mediated synthesis of CeO2 NPs and discusses the effects on CeO2 NPs of various synthesis methods that have been reported. Several photocatalytic, antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxicity applications have been evaluated, compared and discussed. Future prospects are also suggested.

Enhanced visible-light-driven photocatalytic performance for degradation of organic contaminants using PbWO4 nanostructure fabricated by a new, simple and green sonochemical approach

Water contamination has turned into a critical global concern that menaces the entire biosphere and has a notable effect on the lives of living beings and humans. As a proper and environmentally friendly solution, visible-light photocatalysis technology has been offered for water contamination removal. There is a strong interest in the design of the efficient catalytic materials that are photoactive with the aid of visible light. Herein, to fabricate a highly efficient photocatalyst for removal of organic pollution in water, a facile and swift sonochemical route employed for creation of the spindle shaped PbWO4 nanostructure with the aid of an environmentally friendly capping agent (maltose) for the first time. To optimize the efficiency, dimension and structure of lead tungstate, various effective factors such as time, dose of precursors, power of ultrasound waves and kind of capping agents were altered. The attributes of PbWO4 samples were examined with the aid of diverse identification techniques. The produced lead tungstate samples in role of visible-light photocatalyst were applied to remove organic pollution in water. The kinds of pollutants, dose and type of catalyst were examined as notable factors in the capability to eliminate contaminants. Very favorable catalytic yield and durability were demonstrated by spindle-shaped PbWO4 nanostructure (produced at power of 60 W for 10 min and with usage of maltose). Usage of ultrasonic irradiation could bring to improvement of catalytic yield of PbWO4 to 93%. Overall, the outcomes could introduce the spindle-shaped PbWO4 nanostructure as an efficient substance for eliminating water contamination under visible light.

Single-step sonochemical synthesis of Cu2O-CeO2 nanocomposites with enhanced photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization

In this paper, for the first time, composite nanostructures of Cu₂O-CeO₂ were prepared by a facile and single-step sonochemical method for thiophene photocatalytic oxidative desulfurization. Sonication was performed utilizing a high-intensity ultrasonic probe with a maximum output power of 80 Wcm^-3 and operating frequency at 20 kHz. The direct effect of ultrasonic waves on the composition and morphology of the obtained products was also evaluated and it was found that under ultrasonic irradiation, Cu₂O-CeO₂ can be produced while the main product in the absence of ultrasonic waves is CuO-CeO₂. Cu₂O-CeO₂ exhibits much higher photocatalytic efficiency (84%) than CuO-CeO₂ (39%) due to its higher light absorption and electron synergistic effect. The effect of Ce:Cu on photocatalytic efficiency was examined by considering the ratios of 1:0.25, 1:1, 0.5:1, and 0.25:1 and yields of 64, 81, 84, and 76% were obtained, respectively. This indicates that there is an optimal value for the Ce:Cu ratio in the Cu₂O-CeO₂ nanocomposite.
