Enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes by ultrasonic-assisted electrospray TiO2/graphene oxide on polyacrylonitrile/β-cyclodextrin nanofibrous membranes

Development of inorganic and mixed matrix membranes for application in toxic dyes-contaminated industrial effluents with in-situ treatments

Dyes are the most ubiquitous organic pollutants in industrial effluents. They are highly toxic to both plants and animals; thus, their removal is paramount to the sustainability of ecosystem. However, they have shown resistance to photolysis and various biological, physical, and chemical wastewater remediation processes. Membrane removal technology has been vital for the filtration/separation of the dyes. In comparison to polymeric membranes, inorganic and mixed matrix (MM) membranes have shown potentials to the removal of dyes. The inorganic and MM membranes are particularly effective due to their high porosity, enhanced stability, improved permeability, higher enhanced selectivity and good stability and resistance to harsh chemical and thermal conditions. They have shown prospects in filtration/separation, adsorption, and catalytic degradation of the dyes. This review highlighted the advantages of the inorganic and MM membranes for the various removal techniques for the treatments of the dyes. Methods for the membranes production have been reviewed. Their application for the filtration/separation and adsorption have been critically analyzed. Their application as support for advanced oxidation processes such as persulfate, photo-Fenton and photocatalytic degradations have been highlighted. The mechanisms underscoring the efficiency of the processes have been cited. Lastly, comments were given on the prospects and challenges of both inorganic and MM membranes towards removal of the dyes from industrial effluents.

Removal of contaminants present in water and wastewater by cyclodextrin-based adsorbents: A bibliometric review from 1993 to 2022

Cyclodextrin (CD), a cyclic oligosaccharide from enzymatic starch breakdown, plays a crucial role in pharmaceuticals, food, agriculture, textiles, biotechnology, chemicals, and environmental applications, including water and wastewater treatment. In this study, a statistical analysis was performed using VOSviewer and Citespace to scrutinize 2038 articles published from 1993 to 2022. The investigation unveiled a notable upsurge in pertinent articles and citation counts, with China and USA contributing the highest publication volumes. The prevailing research focus predominantly revolves around the application of CD-based materials used as adsorbents to remove conventional contaminants such as dyes and metals. The CD chemistry allows the construction of materials with various architectures, including cross-linked, grafted, hybrid or supported systems. The main adsorbents are cross-linked CD polymers, including nanosponges, fibres and hybrid composites. Additionally, research efforts are actually concentrated on the synthesis of CD-based membranes, CD@graphene oxide, and CD@TiO2. These materials are proposed as adsorbents to remove emerging pollutants. By employing bibliometric analysis, this study delivers a comprehensive retrospective review and synthesis of research concerning CD-based adsorbents for the removal of contaminants from wastewater, thereby offering valuable insights for future large-scale application of CD-based adsorption materials.

PCL/Yam Polysaccharide nanofibrous membranes loaded with self-assembled HP-β-CD/ECG inclusion complexes for food packaging

In this study, Polycaprolactone (PCL)/Yam Polysaccharide (YP) fiber membranes loaded the ultrasound-mediated assembly of 2-Hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD)/Epicatechin gallate (ECG) inclusion complexes were prepared by electrospinning technology for food packaging. Morphology, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that the inclusion complexes were successfully assembled. With the addition of inclusion complexes, the average diameter of the fibers increased from 2480.96 to 10179.12 nm, the crystallinity decreased, the thermal stability improved, the hydrophilicity enhanced, and the water vapor permeability enhanced. Meanwhile, thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the inclusion complexes formed hydrogen bonds between the fibers, which improved the thermal stability, but the mechanical behavior suffered a certain loss. In addition, the fiber membrane could continuously release ECG within 240 h, which showed excellent antibacterial effects both in vitro and in vivo. These results indicated that the fiber film developed based on electrospinning had a broad application prospect in food packaging.

β-cyclodextrin polymer composites for the removal of pharmaceutical substances, endocrine disruptor chemicals, and dyes from aqueous solution- A review of recent trends

Cyclodextrin (CD) and its derivatives are receiving attention as a new-generation adsorbent for water pollution treatment due to their external hydrophilic and internal hydrophobic properties. Among types of CD, β-Cyclodextrin (βCD) has been a material of choice with a proven track record for a range of utilities in distinct domains, owing to its unique cage-like structural conformations and inclusion complex-forming ability, especially to mitigate emerging contaminants (ECs). This article outlines βCD composites in developing approaches of their melds and composites for purposes such as membranes for removal of the ECs in aqueous setups have been explored with emphasis on recent trends. Electrospinning has bestowed an entirely different viewpoint on polymeric materials, comprising βCD, in the framework of diverse functions across a multitude of niches. Besides, this article especially discusses βCD polymer composite membrane-based removal of contaminants such as pharmaceutical substances, endocrine disruptors chemicals, and dyes. Finally, in this article, the challenges and future directions of βCD-based adsorbents are discussed, which may shed light on pragmatic commercial applications of βCD polymer composite membranes.

Environmental Application of Graphene and Its Forms for Wastewater Treatment: a Sustainable Solution Toward Improved Public Health

Public health is seriously jeopardized in developing countries due to poor sanitation and the presence of persistent pollutants in natural water bodies. Open dumping, wastewater discharge without proper treatment and atmospheric fallout of the organic and inorganic pollutants are the main causes behind the poor condition. Some of the pollutants pose a greater risk due to their toxicity and persistence. Such a class of pollutants are known as chemical contaminants of emerging concern (CECC), including antibiotics and drug residues, endocrine disruptors, pesticides and micro- and nano-plastics. Conventional treatment methods cannot treat them properly and are often associated with several disadvantages. However, the chronological development of techniques and materials for their treatment has exhibited graphene as an efficient candidate for environmental remediation. This current review considers the various graphene-based materials, their properties, advancement in synthesis methods with time and their detailed application in removing dyes, antibiotics and heavy metals. It has been discussed how graphene and its derivatives exhibit unique electronic, mechanical, structural and thermal properties. In this paper, the mechanism of adsorption and degradation using these graphene-based materials has also been discussed vividly. In addition to this, a bibliographic analysis was performed to identify the trend of research related to graphene and its derivatives in the adsorption and degradation of pollutants round the globe reflected by the publications. Therefore, this review can be instrumental in understanding the fact that further development of graphene-based materials and their mass production can provide a very effective and economical wastewater treatment method.

Low-temperature synthesis, characterization and photocatalytic properties of lanthanum vanadate LaVO4

In this study, we have successfully prepared tetragonal lanthanum vanadate LaVO₄ nanoparticles by a facile co-precipitation method at room temperature. The obtained materials were characterized using different structural and micro-structural techniques such as the characterization by X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectrum (DRS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Raman spectrometry. The obtained structure is crystallized in single tetragonal phase with pin-like nanostructure. A main optical transition with bandgap energy of 3.26 eV is evidenced, and the average lifetime of charges carriers was found to be 1 ns Furthermore, the photoluminescence occurs in the visible light range. The photocatalytic activity was evaluated by the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue (MB) with initial concentration of 10 mg L^-1. The result indicates that LaVO₄ particles showed a best photocatalytic activity of 98.2% degradation for methylene blue solution after irradiation of 90 min under visible light. Furthermore, the photocatalytic mechanism and reusability were studied.

Photocatalytic degradation of dyes by novel electrospun nanofibers: A review

Textile industry is a significant contributor of wastewater, which contains pollutants including dye and other chemical substances. The release of thousands of tons of dye used in textile processing and finishing into natural streams and aquatic bodies present dire harm to the environment. In response to environmental concerns, a number of research have been done using low-cost technology to produce absorbents that can remove dyes from water bodies. Distinct techniques such as adsorption, enzymatic and photocatalytic degradation, etc. have been employed to remove dyes. In the last few decades, photocatalysis, a simple and green strategy, has emerged as the most valuable and recent principle that deals with wastewater treatment, using uniquely fabricated nanomaterials. Among them, rapid and versatile electrospinning methods have been used for the construction of a large surface area, hierarchical and reusable nanofibers for environmental remediation. As a flexible and fast fabrication method, reviewing the use of electrospun photocatalytic nanofibers, influential parameters in electrospinning and their effectiveness in the generation of oxidizing agents are a promising platform for the fabrication of novel nanomaterials in photocatalytic degradation of dyes. This review discusses techniques for dye removal, electrospun nanofibers, their fabrication and application in photocatalysis; mechanism of photocatalytic degradation, and challenges and suggested remedies for electrospun nanofibers in photocatalysis.

Ultrasound-Promoted Abatement of Formaldehyde in Liquid Phase with Electrospun Nanostructured Membranes: The Synergy of Combined AOPs

The present work investigates the effect of ultrasounds in the performance of combined advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) on the degradation of formaldehyde (HCHO)-polluted aqueous solutions for potential application in wastewater treatment. Different heterogeneous nanostructured catalysts based on TiO₂ and FeSO₄ for photocatalysis and the Fenton process were employed after electrospray deposition on electrospun nanofibrous membranes. Such systems were tested, without the use of any added hydrogen peroxide, by varying the combinations among the selected AOPs in a batch reactor configuration. The results show that, in the absence of a Fenton reaction, ultrasounds provided a significantly increased formaldehyde photocatalytic abatement, probably by increasing the concentration of active species through a different set of reactions while providing a favorable mass transfer regime by the cavitational effect. Due to the faster kinetics of the photo-Fenton process, thanks to its partial homogeneous nature, such a beneficial effect is more limited for the sono-photo-Fenton configuration. On the other hand, the employment of a sono-photocatalytic-Fenton process revealed a synergic effect that provided the best results, reducing the formaldehyde concentration to less than 99% after 240 min. Further analysis showed that, due to a mutual influence, only a tailored TiO₂/FeSO₄ ratio on the membranes was able to display the best performance.

Flexible PTh/GQDs/TiO2 composite with superior visible-light photocatalytic properties for rapid degradation pollutants

Flexible fiber membranes for pollutant removal have received increasing attention due to their high adsorption performance and easy recycling characteristics. However, due to the lack of environmentally friendly regeneration, some adsorption membranes have low regeneration efficiency, especially in terms of chemical adsorption, so they lack reusability. This study prepares a series of conducting polymer [PAn (polyaniline) or PPy (polypyrrole) or PTh (polythiophene)] graphene quantum dots (GQDs, the size of GQDs is about 20 nm)/TiO₂ ternary fiber membranes via a facile electrospinning method with chemical deposition. Remarkably, this creates an anatase TiO₂ and π-conjugated system. The combination is beneficial to the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants, showing synergistic promotion in both the degradation rate and the degree of decomposition. The UV-vis test shows that the combination of GQDs broadens the optical response threshold of TiO₂, from near ultraviolet region excitation to visible region excitation. At the same time, the conductive polymer load further reduces the energy required for photogenerated electron transfer, which theoretically improves the degradation effect. Photocatalytic degradation tests showed that the PTh/GQDs/TiO₂ fiber membrane exhibited significant high photocatalytic activity of visible-light in the methylene blue (MB) and TC degradation. The degradation rate level is 92.90% and 80.58%, respectively and the MB removal is more than 4 times that of bare TiO₂ membrane. After photocatalytic regeneration four times, the regeneration efficiency can be maintained above 95%. Notably, various experimental results show that the interface charge transfer mechanism between GQDs/TiO₂ and PTh follows the Z-scheme heterojunction, which maximizes the retention of strong reducing electrons and oxidation holes. In the degradation, the active species of ·O₂ ^- and ·OH, make different contributions in the photocatalysts, which oxidize and break down the pollutant molecules into small molecules and then to harmless substances. According to the electronegativity difference of the material itself, PTh acts as electron acceptor in the degradation system, and TiO₂ fiber membrane doped with GQDs acts as electron donor. The present research, not only offers feasibility of the PTh/GQDs/TiO₂ flexible fiber membrane as an environment-friendly catalyst, but also motivates researchers to develop flexible fiber materials for future photocatalytic technology.

The photocatalytic process in the treatment of polluted water

Wastewaters often contain toxic organic pollutants with a possible adverse effect on human health and aquatic life upon exposure. Persistent organic pollutants such as dyes and pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and other chemicals are gaining extensive attention. Water treatment utilizing photocatalysis has recently received a lot of interest. Photocatalysis is cutting-edge, alternative technology. It has various advantages, including functioning at normal temperatures and atmospheric pressure, cheap prices, no secondary waste creation, and being readily available and easily accessible. This review presented a comprehensive overview of the advances in the application of the photocatalytic process in the treatment of highly polluted industrial wastewater. The analysis of various literature revealed that TiO₂-based photocatalysts are highly effective in degrading organic pollutants from wastewater compared to other forms of wastewater treatment technologies. The electrical structure of a semiconductor plays a vital role in the photocatalyst's mechanism. The morphology of a photocatalyst is determined by the synthesis method, chemical content, and technical characteristics. The scaled-up of the photoreactors will significantly help in curbing the effect of organic pollutants in wastewater.

Synthesis and enhanced photocatalytic application of porous nanocomposites of (r)GO/TiO2 embedded HCP (hyper crosslinked polymer)

Nanocomposites (r)GO/TiO₂/hyper crosslinked polymer (HCP) were prepared using ultrasonic-assisted method, and identified by (SEM), (EDS), (TEM), and (XRD) techniques. This study was performed to examine the effect of various operating parameters on photocatalytic degradation of Rhodamine B (Rh.B) over (r)GO/TiO₂ embedded HCP followed by an optimization study using response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box-Behnken design (BBD). The photocatalytic activity of rGO/TiO₂/polycalix[4]resorcinarene ((r)GTP) was evaluated using the cationic dye Rhodamine B as a pollutant model under solar light (intensity = 850 W/m²) between 10 and 12 am, June, Ahvaz, Iran. Response Surface Methodology was adopted for the optimization of degradation parameters viz pH, dye concentration, and nanocomposites dosage and contact time. The optimum values for the maximum Rhodamine B (Rh B) degradation of rGO/TiO₂/polycalix (rGTP) and GTP were obtained, in which the degradation of rGTP was 100% and the degradation efficiency of GO/TiO₂/polycalix (GTP) was 70%. ANOVA analysis results demonstrated that irradiation time and nanocomposite mass were the most significant parameters. It was found that rGO/TiO₂/polycalix[4]resorcinarene (rGTP) nanocomposite displayed the best degradation yield for the dye. The results showed that the rGTP nanocomposite displayed good EIS and CV properties besides being eco-friendly and reusable. It could also show a high capacity for the elimination of the dye in the industrial wastewaters.

Electrosprayed CNTs on Electrospun PVDF-Co-HFP Membrane for Robust Membrane Distillation

In this investigation, the electrospraying of CNTs on an electrospun PVDF-Co-HFP membrane was carried out to fabricate robust membranes for the membrane distillation (MD) process. A CNT-modified PVDF-Co-HFP membrane was heat pressed and characterized for water contact angle, liquid entry pressure (LEP), pore size distribution, tensile strength, and surface morphology. A higher water contact angle, higher liquid entry pressure (LEP), and higher tensile strength were observed in the electrosprayed CNT-coated PVDF-Co-HFP membrane than in the pristine membrane. The MD process test was conducted at varying feed temperatures using a 3.5 wt. % simulated seawater feed solution. The CNT-modified membrane showed an enhancement in the temperature polarization coefficient (TPC) and water permeation flux up to 16% and 24.6%, respectively. Field-effect scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) images of the PVDF-Co-HFP and CNT-modified membranes were observed before and after the MD process. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) confirmed the presence of inorganic salt ions deposited on the membrane surface after the DCMD process. Permeate water quality and rejection of inorganic salt ions were quantitatively analyzed using ion chromatography (IC) and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The water permeation flux during the 24-h continuous DCMD operation remained constant with a >99.8% inorganic salt rejection.

Electrospun composite nanofibers as novel high-performance and visible-light photocatalysts for removal of environmental pollutants: A review

Environmental pollution caused by industries and human manipulations is coming a serious global challenge. On the other hand, the world is facing an energy crisis caused by population growth. Designing solar-driven photocatalysts which are inspired by the photosynthesis of plant leaves is a fantastic solution to use solar energy as green, available, and unlimited energy containing ∼50% visible light for the removal of environmental pollutants. The polymeric and non-polymeric-based electrospun composite nanofibers (NFs) are as innovative photocatalytic candidates which increase photocatalytic activity and transition from UV light to visible light and overcome the aggregation, photocorrosion, toxicity, and hard recycling and separation of the nanosized powder form of photocatalysts. The composite NFs are fabricated easily by either embedding the photocatalytic agents into the NFs during electrospinning or via their decorating on the surface of NFs post-electrospinning. Polyacrylonitrile-based, tungsten trioxide-based, zinc oxide-based, and titanium dioxide-based composite NFs were revealed as the most reported composite NFs. All the lately investigated electrospun composite NFs indicated long-term stability, high photocatalytic efficiency (∼> 80%) within a short time of light radiation (10-430 min), and high stability after several cycles of use. They were applied in various applications including degradation of dyes/antibiotics, water splitting, wastewater treatment, antibacterial usage, etc. The photogenerated species especially holes, O₂^∙-, and ^.OH were mostly responsible for the photocatalytic mechanism and pathway. The electrospun composite NFs have the potential to use in large-scale productions in condition that their thickness and recycling conditions are optimized, and their toxicity and detaching are resolved.

Converting recycled membranes into photocatalytic membranes using greener TiO2-GRAPHENE oxide nanomaterials

Despite the widespread use of membrane separation processes for water treatment, operation costs and fouling still restrict their application. Costs can be overcome by recycled membranes whereas fouling can be mitigated by membrane modification. In this work, the performance of recycled reverse osmosis membranes modified by greener titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and graphene oxide (GO) in different modification routes were investigated and compared. The use of recycled membranes as a support acted more than a strategy for costs reduction, but also as an alternative for solid waste reduction. Low adhesion of nanoparticulate materials to the membrane surfaces were verified in depositions by self-assembly, whereas filtration and modification with dopamine generated membranes with well adhered and homogeneous layers. Considering the stability, permeability, and rejection efficiency of dyes as model substrates, the membranes modified with the aid of dopamine-TiO₂-GO were the most promising. The nanomaterials increased the membrane hydrophilicity and formed a hydrated layer that repels the organic contaminants and reduces fouling. Besides membrane rejection, adsorption (contribution: ∼10%) and photocatalysis (contribution: ∼20%) were additional mechanisms for pollutants removal by the modified membranes. The photocatalytic membrane modified with dopamine-TiO₂-GO was furthermore evaluated for the removal of six different pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), noticing gains in terms of removal efficiency (up to 95.7%) and fouling mitigation for the modified membrane compared to the original membranes. The photocatalytic activity still contributed to a simultaneous degradation of PhACs avoiding the generation of a concentrated stream for further disposal.

Fabrication of Chitosan/Hydroxyethyl Cellulose/TiO2 Incorporated Mulberry Anthocyanin 3D-Printed Bilayer Films for Quality of Litchis

In this study, a bilayer antibacterial chromogenic material was prepared using chitosan (CS) and hydroxyethyl cellulose (HEC) as inner substrate, mulberry anthocyanins (MA) as a natural tracer, and titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO₂)/CS:HEC as a bacteriostatic agent for the outer layer. By investigating their apparent viscosity and suitability for 3D printing links, the optimal ratio of the substrates was determined to be CS:HEC = 3:3. Viscosity of the CH was moderate. The printing process was consistent and exhibited no breakage or clogging. The printed image was highly stable and not susceptible to collapse and diffusion. Scanning electron microscopy and infrared spectroscopy indicated that intermolecular binding between the substances exhibited good compatibility. Titanium dioxide nanoparticles (nano-TiO₂) were evenly distributed in the CH and no agglomeration was observed. The inner film fill rates affected the overall performance of the chromogenic material, with strong inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus at different temperatures, as well as strong color stability. The experimental results indicated that the double-layer antibacterial chromogenic material can, to a certain extent, extend the shelf life of litchi fruit and determine the extent of its freshness. Therefore, from this study, we can infer that the research and development of active materials have a certain reference value.

Electrospun nanofibrous membrane with antibacterial and antiviral properties decorated with Myoporum bontioides extract and silver-doped carbon nitride nanoparticles for medical masks application

Public health safety issues have been plaguing the world since the pandemic outbreak of coronavirus disease (COVID-19). However, most personal protective equipments (PPE) do not have antibacterial and anti- toxicity effects. In this work, we designed and prepared a reusable, antibacterial and anti-toxicity Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based nanofibrous membrane cooperated with Ag/g-C₃N₄ (Ag-CN), Myoporum.bontioides (M. bontioides) plant extracts and Ag nanoparticles (NPs) by an electrospinning-process. The SEM and TEM characterization revealed the formation of raised, creased or wrinkled areas on the fiber surface caused by the Ag nanoparticles, the rough surface prevented the aerosol particles on the fiber surface from sliding and stagnating, thus providing excellent filtration performance. The PAN/M. bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane could be employed as a photocatalytic bactericidal material, which not only degraded 96.37% of methylene blue within 150 min, but also exhibited the superior bactericidal effect of 98.65 ± 1.49% and 97.8 ± 1.27% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, under 3 hs of light exposure. After 3 cycles of sterilization experiments, the PAN/M. bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane maintained an efficient sterilization effect. Molecular docking revealed that the compounds in M. bontioides extracts interacted with neo-coronavirus targets mainly on Mpro and RdRp proteins, and these compounds had the strongest docking energy with Mpro protein, the shortest docking radius, and more binding sites for key amino acids around the viral protein targets, which influenced the replication and transcription process of neo-coronavirus. The PAN/M.bontioides/Ag-CN/Ag nanofibrous membrane also performed significant inhibition of influenza A virus H3N2. The novel nanofiber membrane is expected to be applied to medical masks, which will improve human isolation and protection against viruses.

High-performance photocatalytic membranes for water purification in relation to environmental and operational parameters

Growing technologies, increasing population and environmental pollution lead to severe contamination of water and require advanced water treatment technologies. These aspects lead to the need to purify water with advanced smart materials. This paper reviews the recent advances (during the last 5 years) in photocatalytic composite membranes used for water treatment. For this purpose, the authors have reviewed the main materials used in the development of (photocatalytic membranes) PMs, environmental and operational factors affecting the performance of photocatalytic membranes, and the latest developments and applications of PMs in water purifications. The composite photocatalytic membranes show good performance in the removal and degradation of pollutants from water.

On the Versatile Role of Electrospun Polymer Nanofibers as Photocatalytic Hybrid Materials Applied to Contaminated Water Remediation: A Brief Review

A wide variety of materials, strategies, and methods have been proposed to face the challenge of wastewater pollution. The most innovative and promising approaches include the hybrid materials made of polymeric nanofibers and photocatalytic nanoparticles. Electrospun nanofibers with unique properties, such as nanosized diameter, large specific surface area, and high aspect ratio, represent promising materials to support and stabilize photocatalytic nanosized semiconductors. Additionally, the role performed by polymer nanofibers can be extended even further since they can act as an active medium for the in situ synthesis of photocatalytic metal nanoparticles or contribute to pollutant adsorption, facilitating their approach to the photocatalytic sites and their subsequent photodegradation. In this paper, we review the state of the art of electrospun polymer/semiconductor hybrid nanofibers possessing photocatalytic activity and used for the remediation of polluted water by light-driven processes (i.e., based on photocatalytic activity). The crucial role of polymer nanofibers and their versatility in these types of procedures are emphasized.

Modification strategies of membranes with enhanced Anti-biofouling properties for wastewater Treatment: A review

This review addresses composite membranes used for wastewater treatment, focusing heavily on the anti-biofouling properties of such membranes. Biofouling caused by the development of a thick biofilm on the membrane surface is a major issue that reduces water permeance and reduces its lifetime. Biofilm formation and adhesion are mitigated by modifying membranes with two-dimensional or zero-dimensional carbon-based nanomaterials or their modified substituents. In particular, nanomaterials based on graphene, including graphene oxide and carbon quantum dots, are mainly used as nanofillers in the membrane. Functionalization of the nanofillers with various organic ligands or compositing the nanofiller with other materials, such as silver nanoparticles, enhances the bactericidal ability of composite membranes. Moreover, such membrane modifications reduce biofilm adhesion while increasing water permeance and salt/dye rejection. This review discusses the recent literature on developing graphene oxide-based and carbon quantum dot-based composite membranes for biofouling-resistant wastewater treatment.

Prospects of Synthesized Magnetic TiO2-Based Membranes for Wastewater Treatment: A Review

Global accessibility to clean water has stressed the need to develop advanced technologies for the removal of toxic organic and inorganic pollutants and pathogens from wastewater to meet stringent discharge water quality limits. Conventionally, the high separation efficiencies, relative low costs, small footprint, and ease of operation associated with integrated photocatalytic-membrane (IPM) technologies are gaining an all-inclusive attention. Conversely, photocatalysis and membrane technologies face some degree of setbacks, which limit their worldwide application in wastewater settings for the treatment of emerging contaminants. Therefore, this review elucidated titanium dioxide (TiO₂), based on its unique properties (low cost, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, and high chemical stability), to have great potential in engineering photocatalytic-based membranes for reclamation of wastewater for re-use. The environmental pathway of TiO₂ nanoparticles, membranes and configuration types, modification process, characteristics, and applications of IPMs in water settings are discussed. Future research and prospects of magnetized TiO₂-based membrane technology is highlighted as a viable water purification technology to mitigate fouling in the membrane process and photocatalyst recoverability. In addition, exploring life cycle assessment research would also aid in utilizing the concept and pressing for large-scale application of this technology.

Towards Computer-Aided Graphene Covered TiO2-Cu/(CuxOy) Composite Design for the Purpose of Photoinduced Hydrogen Evolution

In search a hydrogen source, we synthesized TiO2-Cu-graphene composite photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. The catalyst is a new and unique material as it consists of copper-decorated TiO2 particles covered tightly in graphene and obtained in a fluidized bed reactor. Both, reduction of copper from Cu(CH3COO) at the surface of TiO2 particles and covering of TiO2-Cu in graphene thin layer by Chemical Vapour Deposition (CVD) were performed subsequently in the flow reactor by manipulating the gas composition. Obtained photocatalysts were tested in regard to hydrogen generation from photo-induced water conversion with methanol as sacrificial agent. The hydrogen generation rate for the most active sample reached 2296.27 µmol H2 h−1 gcat−1. Combining experimental and computational approaches enabled to define the optimum combination of the synthesis parameters resulting in the highest photocatalytic activity for water splitting for green hydrogen production. The results indicate that the major factor affecting hydrogen production is temperature of the TiO2-Cu-graphene composite synthesis which in turn is inversely correlated to photoactivity.

Preparation of polylactic acid/TiO2/GO nano-fibrous films and their preservation effect on green peppers

Polylactic acid (PLA)/nano-TiO₂(TiO₂ NPs)/Graphene oxide (GO) nano-fibrous films were prepared by ultrasonic assisted electrostatic spinning technology, and the effects of TiO₂ NPs:GO mass ratio and ultrasonic power on film morphology and mechanical, thermal, barrier and antibacterial properties were investigated. The addition of TiO₂ NPs and GO can significantly increase the tensile strength and elongation at the break of PLA nano-fibrous films, and improve the water barrier properties of the nano-fibrous films. The antibacterial experiment showed that the inhibition rates of the nano-fibrous films against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus after 24 h exposure to UV irradiation reached 94.4 ± 1.8% and 92.6 ± 1.7% At the same time, the fresh-keeping packaging experiment of green peppers at room temperature, through the determination of hardness, soluble solids, chlorophyll content to determine the degree of decay of green pepper, it showed that PLA/TiO₂ NPs/GO nano-fibrous films can better maintain the sensory quality of green peppers, delay the rate of spoilage of green peppers, and prolong the preservation period of green peppers.
