Abstract
Natural polysaccharides are among the renewable sources with great potential for replacing petroleum-derived chemicals as precursors to produce biodegradable films. This study aimed to prepare biopolymeric films using starch extracted from the periderm and cortex of cassava roots (waste from cassava root processing), locust bean galactomannan, and cellulose nanofibers also obtained from cassava waste. The films were prepared by casting, and their physicochemical, mechanical, and biodegradability properties were evaluated. The content of cellulose nanofibers varied from 0.5 to 2.5%. Although the addition of cellulose nanofibers did not alter the mechanical properties of the films, it significantly enhanced the vapor barrier of the films (0.055 g mm/m2 h kPa-2.5% nanofibers) and their respective stabilities in aqueous acidic and alkaline media. All prepared films were biodegradable, with complete degradation occurring within five days. The prepared films were deemed promising alternatives for minimizing environmental impacts caused by the disposal of petroleum-derived materials.

Abstract
The idea of environment friendly and affordable renewable energy resources has prompted the industry to focus on the set up of biorefineries for sustainable bioeconomy. Lignocellulosic biomass (LCB) is considered as an abundantly available renewable feedstock for the production of biofuels which can potentially reduce the dependence on petrochemical refineries. By utilizing various conversion technologies, an integrated biorefinery platform of LCB can be created, embracing the idea of the 'circular bioeconomy'. The development of effective pretreatment methods and biocatalytic systems by various bioengineering and machine learning approaches could reduce the bioprocessing costs, thereby making biomass-based biorefinery more sustainable. This review summarizes the development and advances in the lignocellulosic biorefineries from the LCB to the final product stage using various different state-of-the-art approaches for the progress of circular bioeconomy. The life cycle assessment which generates knowledge on the environmental impacts related to biofuel production chains is also summarized.

Abstract
For a sustainable biorefinery, reduction in the recalcitrance of lignocellulosic biomass is very crucial for the efficient utilization of each fraction. The present work investigated an integrated pretreatment method to recover high-quality lignin along with the cellulose-rich pulp. An optimization study employing response surface methodology investigated the synergistic effects of ultrasound and organosolv pretreatment from Bambusa tulda (bamboo). The optimal condition (180 °C, 55 min, and 30 min sonication) resulted in 65.81 ± 2.40% of lignin yield with 95.37 ± 1.17% purity. A reduction in 7.85% yield and 1.54% purity of lignin with organosolv pretreatment highlighted the efficacy of sonication in lignin extraction. Ultrasound resulted in homolytic cleavage of the lignin-carbohydrate bond that enhanced delignification and increase the cellulose crystallinity. NMR, FTIR, GPC, and TGA of lignin suggested the superiority of sonication in maintaining lignin quality. A significant amount of β-O-4 linkages in extracted lignin is favorable for its subsequent valorization.

Effects of Incorporating Alkaline Hydrogen Peroxide Treated Sugarcane Fibre on The Physical Properties and Glycemic Potency of White Bread. Foods 2023; 12:foods12071460. Abstract
The consumption of dietary fibres can affect glycemic power and control diabetes. Sugarcane fibre (SCF) is known as insoluble dietary fibre, the properties of which can be affected by physical, chemical, and enzymatic treatments. In this study, alkaline hydrogen peroxide (AHP) treatments were conducted over time (0.5, 1, 3, and 5 h) at 12.6% (w/v) SCF and the effects on the physicochemical and structural properties of the SCF were evaluated. After making dough and bread with the SCF, with and without AHP treatments, the glycemic responses of the bread samples were evaluated. Shorter durations of AHP treatment (0.5 and 1 h) reduced lignin effectively (37.3 and 40.4%, respectively), whereas AHP treatment at 1 and 3 h duration was more effective in increasing particle sizes (50.9 and 50.1 μm, respectively). The sugar binding capacity, water holding capacity (from 2.98 to 3.86 g water/g SCF), and oil holding capacity (from 2.47 to 3.66 g oil/g SCF) increased in all AHP samples. Results from Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the polymorphism transition of cellulose (cellulose I to cellulose II). The morphology of SCF detected under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicated the conversion of the surface to a more porous, rough structure due to the AHP treatment. Adding SCF decreased dough extensibility but increased bread hardness and chewiness. All SCF-incorporated bread samples have reduced glycemic response. Incorporation of 1, 3, and 5 h AHP-treated SCF was effective in reducing the glycemic potency than 0.5 h AHP-treated SCF, but not significantly different from the untreated SCF. Overall, this study aims to valorize biomass as AHP is commonly applied to bagasse to produce value-added chemicals and fuels.

Enhanced hydrogen production from water hyacinth by a combination of ultrasonic-assisted alkaline pretreatment, dark fermentation, and microbial electrolysis cell. BIORESOURCE TECHNOLOGY 2022; 357:127340. Abstract
In this study, hydrogen (H2) production from water hyacinth (WH) was enhanced by the integration of the ultrasonic-assisted alkaline (UAA) pretreatment, dark fermentation (DF), and microbial electrolysis cell (MEC). The results showed that UAA pretreatment improved around 350% in H2 production in the DF stage and nearly 400% in the whole process compared to un-pretreated. The H2 yield in the DF stage reached the maximum value of 110.4 mL/g-VS at a WH concentration of 20 g-TS/L. However, high concentrations of co-produced soluble metabolite products (SMPs) and suspended solid in DF effluent adversely affected the efficiency of the MEC stage. Consequently, a WH concentration of 5 g-TS/L was optimal for the UAA-DF-MEC process that achieved the highest H2 yield of 565.8 mL/g-VS. It suggests that other auxiliary processes (e.g., dilution, centrifugation, effective methanogen inhibition, etc.) need to be developed to further improve the H2 production from WH via the UAA-DF-MEC process.
