Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines demonstrate excellent effectiveness against infection, severe disease, and death. However, pediatric COVID-19 vaccination rates lag among individuals from rural and other medically underserved communities. The research objective of the current protocol is to determine the effectiveness of a vaccine communication mobile health (mHealth) application (app) on parental decisions to vaccinate their children against COVID-19. METHODS Custodial parents/caregivers with ≥ 1 child eligible for COVID-19 vaccination who have not yet received the vaccine will be randomized to download one of two mHealth apps. The intervention app will address logistical and motivational barriers to pediatric COVID-19 vaccination. Participants will receive eight weekly push notifications followed by two monthly push notifications (cues to action) regarding vaccinating their child. Through branching logic, users will access customized content based on their locality, degree of rurality-urbanicity, primary language (English/Spanish), race/ethnicity, and child's age to address COVID-19 vaccine knowledge and confidence gaps. The control app will provide push notifications and information on general pediatric health and infection prevention and mitigation strategies based on recommendations from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The primary outcome is the proportion of children who complete COVID-19 vaccination series. Secondary outcomes include the proportion of children who receive ≥ 1 dose of COVID-19 vaccine and changes in parent/caregiver scores from baseline to immediately post-intervention on the modified WHO SAGE Vaccine Hesitancy Scale adapted for the COVID-19 vaccine. DISCUSSION The COVID-19 pandemic inflicts disproportionate harm on individuals from underserved communities, including those in rural settings. Maximizing vaccine uptake in these communities will decrease infection rates, severe illness, and death. Given that most US families from these communities use smart phones, mHealth interventions hold the promise of broad uptake. Bundling multiple mHealth vaccine uptake interventions into a single app may maximize the impact of deploying such a tool to increase COVID-19 vaccination. The new knowledge to be gained from this study will directly inform future efforts to increase COVID-19 vaccination rates across diverse settings and provide an evidentiary base for app-based vaccine communication tools that can be adapted to future vaccine-deployment efforts. Abstract
THEORETICAL PRINCIPLES As technology use increasingly expands, the opportunity to capitalize on it for healthcare education, monitoring, and assessment has grown rapidly, especially among adolescent patients. As apps are developed, consideration should be given to self-management theory concepts. PHENOMENA ADDRESSED The proliferation of mobile health (mHealth) applications allows adolescents to access healthcare information in new, innovative ways. Many health applications focus on health promotion, fitness, and nutrition and others help persons with chronic disease. This article offers a compelling case for incorporating mHealth into teen healthcare by reviewing current data on teens' technology use, showing how mHealth aligns with self-management theory concepts, and offering a case scenario on mHealth-enhanced self-management care. RESEARCH LINKAGES The ability to combine accurate and immediate healthcare information with continual social support could radically improve teen's self-management behaviors, especially when mHealth apps use connectivity, a feedback loop, and concepts known to enhance self-management behaviors.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW The current article reviews recent literature related to pediatric and adolescent vaccination, specifically focusing on social determinants of under-immunization, expanding adolescent immunization rates, and new recommendations surrounding the meningococcal serotype B vaccine (MenB). RECENT FINDINGS Vaccine refusals and vaccine-preventable diseases have been rising in some parts of the world, and appear to be linked to household factors, such as a family's socioeconomic status. Adolescents have lower immunization rates than younger children. Newer vaccines targeted at adolescents, such as the MenB vaccine, have yet to be widely accepted by pediatric providers, parents, and patients. SUMMARY Pediatric healthcare providers should attempt to increase local immunization rates by vaccinating children at all eligible office visits and utilizing electronic health record decision-support tools. Although the number of families who choose not to vaccinate their children may be rising, providers can be innovative (e.g. incorporate digital vaccine reminder systems) and increase their familiarity with new vaccine recommendations to continue to prevent serious vaccine-preventable diseases.

Abstract
Centralized reminder/recall (C-R/R) is an evidence-based strategy for increasing vaccination rates that uses a population-level database such as a state immunization information system (IIS) to send notifications across large geographic areas. IISs are usually based in state public health departments, which could initiate C-R/R. While C-R/R is a promising strategy, the factors influencing its initiation and sustainment are not clear. Utilizing qualitative content analysis methodology and interviews with key stakeholders involved in or knowledgeable about C-R/R, we examined the characteristics of these initiatives and factors influencing their success. We identified and spoke with managers and senior leaders across IISs, health plans, health systems, pharmaceutical companies, and advocacy organizations and focused especially on C-R/R activities within IISs. Several considerations were determined important to C-R/R success: decision-making, stakeholder buy-in, partnerships, funding, data and technology, evaluation, and message content. Salient barriers were costs and lack of funding, poor contact data quality (i.e. telephone number, home address), and messaging that is either overly broad or too specific. Pertinent facilitators of C-R/R included notifying health providers in advance of an initiative, conducting a rigorous post-reminder/recall evaluation, and engaging a range of partners. Partnerships were important to stakeholders for multiple reasons including technical assistance, resource sharing, and sharing of best practices. Overall, our results illustrate the many opportunities to advance C-R/R through further collaboration within and across public health departments and potentially via public-private partnerships.

Abstract
The human papillomavirus virus (HPV) vaccine is effective at preventing various cancers, but coverage falls short of targets that are needed for community protection. Here, we use the RE-AIM implementation framework (Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, Maintenance) to understand how text, email, and electronic health record (EHR) reminders and social media campaigns can be used as part of policy and practice interventions to increase HPV vaccination. These technology-based interventions could be used together and mainstreamed into clinical and system-based practice to have the greatest impact. Of the interventions explored, text-based, email-based, and EHR reminders have the most evidence behind them to support their effectiveness. While there are several studies of promotion of the HPV vaccine on social media, more studies are needed to demonstrate their effects and better methods are needed to be able to attribute results to these interventions.
