Abstract
Postpartum reproductive infections in cows generate significant economic losses. The use of lactic acid bacteria in animal health is an alternative tool to avoid antibiotic therapy in the prevention/treatment of bovine reproductive infections. In previous studies, 6 lactic bacteria from bovine mammary glands and vagina with beneficial, safe and technological characteristics were selected, and included in probiotic/phytobiotic formulas (combined with Malva and Lapacho extracts). In this work, probiotic and phytobiotic formulations were designed and their long-term viability determined. They were administered intravaginally to 30 females pregnant bovine pre and postpartum. The modification of the native microbiota and permanence/colonization of cultivable bacteria was evaluated, and also the safety of the designed products through the application of nutritional, clinical, hematological and biochemical parameters. The microorganisms maintained their viability up to 9 months at refrigeration temperature. The number of cultivable bacteria showed different pattern: total aerobic mesophylls increased slightly in all experimental groups, while Enterobacteriaceae increased after delivery, except in beneficial acid lactic bacteria + vegetable extract cows. Control and vegetable extract females showed the highest numbers of Enterobacteriaceae at the end of the trial (30 days postpartum). The number of lactic acid bacteria increased significantly in all the groups between 15 days pre and postpartum. The different parameters evaluated demonstrate the safety and harmlessness of the designed formulas, without producing local and systemic adverse effects in the cows.

Abstract
The traditional practice of harvesting and processing raw date palm sap is not only culturally significant but also provides an essential nutritional source in South Asia. However, the potential for bacterial or viral contamination from animals and environmental sources during its collection remains a serious and insufficiently studied risk. Implementing improved food safety measures and collection techniques could mitigate the risk of these infections. Additionally, the adoption of advanced food analytical methods offers the potential to identify pathogens and uncover the natural bacterial diversity of these products. The advancement of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies, particularly nanopore sequencing, offers a rapid and highly mobile solution. In this study, we employed nanopore sequencing for the bacterial metabarcoding of a set of raw date palm sap samples collected without protective coverage against animals in Bangladesh in 2021. We identified several bacterial species with importance in the natural fermentation of the product and demonstrated the feasibility of this NGS method in the surveillance of raw palm sap products. We revealed two fermentation directions dominated by either Leuconostoc species or Lactococcus species in these products at the first 6 h from harvest, along with opportunistic human pathogens in the background, represented with lower abundance. Plant pathogens, bacteria with the potential for opportunistic human infection and the sequences of the Exiguobacterium genus are also described, and their potential role is discussed. In this study, we demonstrate the potential of mobile laboratory solutions for food safety purposes in low-resource areas.

Abstract
Fluoroquinolone (FQ) is a type of widely used antibiotic in agriculture and aquaculture, and exposure to low doses of FQs may result in the transfer of resistance between animal and human pathogens. Based on the optimization of the operating parameters, an indirect competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ic-ELISA) standard curve was constructed for the simultaneous detection of 13 FQs, including enrofloxacin (ENR), ciprofloxacin (CIP), sarafloxacin (SAR), ofloxacin (OFL), norfloxacin (NOR), pefloxacin mesylate (PM), pefloxacin (PEF), enoxacin (ENX), marbofloxacin (MAR), fleroxacin (FLE), lomefloxacin (LOM), danofloxacin (DAN), and difloxacin (DIF). The limit of detection (LOD, computed as IC10) and sensitivity (IC50) of the ic-ELISA for ENR were 0.59 μg/L and 19.23 μg/L, respectively. The precision and dependability of the detection results of this ic-ELISA were properly verified by HPLC in Rana catesbeianus samples. This indicated that the established ic-ELISA approach could be utilized to determine the FQs in Rana catesbeianus. In addition, this ic-ELISA, based on a broad-spectrum antibody, provides a technical reference and potential strategy for an immunoassay of hazard factors with similar structure.

Abstract
Coexistence of heavy metals in aquatic environments exert complex effects on amphibians. Here, the adverse effects of Pb (0.14 μM) combined with Cu at concentrations of 0, 0.25, and 1.0 μM were investigated in Bufo gargarizans tadpoles. Tadpoles were chronically exposed from Gosner stage (Gs) 26 to Gs 38, and morphology of tadpoles as well as intestinal histology and bacterial community were assessed. Our results indicated that Pb+Cu1.0 exposure induced significant retardation of somatic mass, total length, intestine mass, and intestine length as well as intestinal histological alterations. Pb+Cu0.25 and Pb+Cu1.0 exposure were associated with the loss of gut bacterial diversity. Proteobacteria and Bacteroidetes were two dominant phyla in tadpoles independently of heavy metal exposure, but the abundance of Proteobacteria increased significantly in Pb+Cu1.0 group and Bacteroidetes decreased significantly in all treatment groups. Furthermore, functional prediction indicated that metabolic disorders were associated with Pb+Cu0.25 and Pb+Cu1.0 exposure. Overall, relative limited shifts in intestinal bacterial diversity, composition, and functionality caused by Pb+Cu0 exposure, while coexistence of Pb and Cu induced gut dysbiosis and might further cause disturbance of metabolic homeostasis. The findings of this study provide insights into the effects of Pb and Cu coexistence on the health of amphibians.

Abstract
Diverse communities of symbiotic microbes inhabit the digestive systems of vertebrates and play a crucial role in animal health, and host diet plays a major role in shaping the composition and diversity of these communities. Here, we characterized diet and gut microbiome of fire salamander populations from three Belgian forests. We carried out DNA metabarcoding on fecal samples, targeting eukaryotic 18S rRNA of potential dietary prey items, and bacterial 16S rRNA of the concomitant gut microbiome. Our results demonstrated an abundance of soft-bodied prey in the diet of fire salamanders, and a significant difference in the diet composition between males and females. This sex-dependent effect on diet was also reflected in the gut microbiome diversity, which is higher in males than female animals. Proximity to human activities was associated with increased intestinal pathogen loads. Collectively, the data supports a relationship between diet, environment and intestinal microbiome in fire salamanders, with potential health implications.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to select and isolate autochthonous bacteria with probiotic potential for use in a supplemented diet for bullfrog tadpoles, Lithobates catesbeianus. A total of 20 strains of lactic acid bacteria were isolated. Nine out of these were used in the following in vitro assays: antagonism against pathogenic bacteria (ANT), antimicrobial activity from extracellular compounds (MIC), tolerance to bile salts (TBS), pH reduction, protease production, sensitivity to antimicrobial tetracycline, cell viability, growth rate and doubling time. Using these data was defined an ideotype (ideal strain) based on the best results. Distances were estimated with the Mahalanobis (D2) test, and the best candidates, presenting the shortest ideotype distances, were considered to be used. The best strain was found to be Lactobacillus plantarum because it presented 10.00 ± 0.50 mm of ANT against Aeromonas hydrophila, 3.99 ± 0.01 of MIC independent of pathogenic bacteria, 85.07 ± 0.01 of TBS, 4.20 ± 0.02 of final pH, 17.67 ± 1.15 of protease production, 13.50 ± 2.00 sensitivity to antimicrobial tetracycline, 9.36 ± 0.04 of cell viability, 0.20 ± 0.00 of growth rate and 3.46 ± 0.00 doubling time. Therefore this probiotic candidate was then supplemented (2.045 ± 1.07 × 107 colony forming unities. g-1) into the diets of bullfrog tadpoles for a period of 42 days. At the end of the trial, samples of blood and intestines were collected to verify the haematological alterations and the intestinal morphology using transmission and scanning electron microscopy. Tadpoles fed the supplemented diet showed successful lactic acid bacterium colonisation, an increased number of circulating thrombocytes, monocytes, eosinophil and LG-PAS+ and also an increase in the length and density of intestinal microvilli. This study shows the feasibility of using probiotics isolated from farmed bullfrogs as a supplement in the diets of tadpoles, providing a promising alternative for modulating the health of these animals.

Abstract
AIM To evaluate the effect of freeze-drying and storage conditions on the viability and beneficial properties of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) for raniculture. METHODS AND RESULTS Lactococcus lactis CRL 1584, L. lactis CRL 1827, Lactococcus garvieae CRL 1828 and Lactobacillus plantarum CRL 1606 viability under different conditions was studied. 10% lactose and 5% skim milk + 5% lactose were excellent lyoprotectants, but 5% skim milk + 5% lactose and whey protein concentrated (WPC) or WPC + sugars were the lower cost lyoprotective options. The effect of temperature depended on both lyoprotectants and storage time. Thus, for Lactococcus, skim milk, skim milk + sucrose and WPC + sucrose were selected for lyophilization and storage at 4°C and skim milk + lactose for 25°C. For Lact. plantarum CRL 1606, the best lyoprotectants for lyophilization and storage at 4°C were milk + sugars and WPS + sucrose and, at 25°C, skim milk + sucrose. CONCLUSIONS Lactic acid bacteria viability after freeze-drying was strain-specific and depended on the lyoprotectant used. Highest viability was obtained when stored at 4°C, and the beneficial properties remained stable for 18 months independently of storage temperature. Abstract
Lactococcus lactis CRL 1584 isolated from a Lithobates catesbeianus hatchery inhibits the growth of Citrobacter freundii (a bullfrog pathogen) and Listeria monocytogenes by a synergistic effect between lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide and a bacteriocin-like molecule. The chemical characterization of the bacteriocin in cell-free supernatants indicates that it has a proteinaceous nature. Hexadecane and ethyl acetate did not modify the bacteriocin activity, while 10 and 20 % (v/v) chloroform decreased the activity by 29 and 43 %, respectively. The antimicrobial peptide was heat stable since 85 % of residual activity was detected when neutralized supernatants were heated at 80 °C for 30 min. Moreover, no bacteriocin inactivation was observed when supernatants were kept at -20 °C for 3 months. The synthesis of the bacteriocin was associated with bacterial growth, highest production (2,100 AU/ml) being detected at the end of the exponential growth phase. At pH ranges of 5-6.5 and 5.0-5.5 the inhibitory molecule was stable when stored for 2 days at 4 and 25 °C, respectively. Moreover, it had a bactericidal effect on L. monocytogenes and the ultrastructural studies of pathogenic cells revealed clumping of the cytoplasmic material, increased periplasmic space and cell wall modifications. The deduced amino acid sequence of the bacteriocin was identical to nisin Z and the genetic determinants for its production are harbored in the chromosome. These results, described for the first time in L. lactis from a bullfrog hatchery, will increase knowledge of the bacteriocin under study with a view to its potential inclusion in probiotics for raniculture or biopreservatives.

Abstract
This review summarizes the most recent updates on emerging infectious diseases of amphibia. A brief summary of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis history, epidemiology, pathogenesis, life cycle, diagnosis, treatment, and biosecurity is provided. Ambystoma tigrinum virus, common midwife toad virus, frog virus 3, Rana grylio virus, Rana catesbeiana ranavirus, Mahaffey Road virus, Rana esculenta virus, Bohle iridovirus, and tiger frog virus ranaviruses are extensively reviewed. Emerging bacterial pathogens are discussed, including Flavobacter sp, Aeromonas sp, Citrobacter freundii, Chlamydophila sp, Mycobacterium liflandii, Elizabethkingia meningoseptica, and Ochrobactrum anthropi. Rhabdias sp, Ribeiroia sp, and Spirometra erinacei are among several of the parasitic infections overviewed in this article.
