Abstract
The present study aimed to determine the phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of S. aureus isolates from the nasal swabs of goats. A total of 232 nasal samples (one per animal) were collected from goats on 13 farms located in two regions of Algeria and were analyzed for the presence of S. aureus. The detection of virulence factors was carried out using PCR. The antibiotic susceptibility of the recovered isolates was assessed using the disc diffusion method. The biofilm formation ability was assessed by the Congo red agar method and a microtiter plate assay, and the molecular characterization of isolates was carried out by spa-typing, and for selected isolates also by multilocus sequence typing (MLST). Overall, 36 out of 232 nasal swabs (15.5%) contained S. aureus, and 62 isolates were recovered. Regarding the virulence factors, at least one staphylococcal enterotoxin gene was detected in 30 (48.4%) isolates. The gene tst encoding the toxic shock syndrome toxin was detected in fifteen isolates (24.2%), but none of the isolates harbored the gene of Panton-Valentine leukocidin (lukF/S-PV). Nine different spa-types were identified, including the detection of a new one (t21230). The recovered isolates were assigned to three clonal complexes, with CC5 (51.8%) being the most common lineage. Two isolates were methicillin-resistant (MRSA) and belonged to ST5 (CC5) and to spa-types t450 and t688. Moreover, 27 (43.5%) of the S. aureus isolates were found to be slime producers in Congo red agar, and all of the recovered isolates could produce biofilms in the microtiter plate assay. Our study showed that the nares of healthy goats could be a reservoir of toxigenic and antibiotic-resistant strains of S. aureus isolates, including MRSA, which could have implications for public health.

Abstract
(1) Background: With increasing international travel and mass population displacement due to war, famine, climate change, and immigration, pathogens, such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), can also spread across borders. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) most commonly causes skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs), as well as more invasive infections. One clonal strain, S. aureus USA300, originating in the United States, has spread worldwide. We hypothesized that S. aureus USA300 would still be the leading clonal strain among US-born compared to non-US-born residents, even though risk factors for SSTIs may be similar in these two populations (2) Methods: In this study, 421 participants presenting with SSTIs were enrolled from six community health centers (CHCs) in New York City. The prevalence, risk factors, and molecular characteristics for MRSA and specifically clonal strain USA300 were examined in relation to the patients' self-identified country of birth. (3) Results: Patients born in the US were more likely to have S. aureus SSTIs identified as MRSA USA300. While being male and sharing hygiene products with others were also significant risks for MRSA SSTI, we found exposure to animals, such as owning a pet or working at an animal facility, was specifically associated with risk for SSTIs caused by MRSA USA300. Latin American USA300 variant (LV USA300) was most common in participants born in Latin America. Spatial analysis showed that MRSA USA300 SSTI cases were more clustered together compared to other clonal types either from MRSA or methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) SSTI cases. (4) Conclusions: Immigrants with S. aureus infections have unique risk factors and S. aureus molecular characteristics that may differ from US-born patients. Hence, it is important to identify birthplace in MRSA surveillance and monitoring. Spatial analysis may also capture additional information for surveillance that other methods do not.

Abstract
Given the central role of livestock in understanding the genomic epidemiology of S. aureus, the present study systematically reviewed and synthesized data on the nasal S. aureus carriage, resistance patterns to critical antimicrobial agents, virulence factors and genetic lineages among healthy livestock. Bibliographical databases were searched for published studies from May 2003 to May 2022 on nasal S. aureus carriage, their phenotypic and genetic characteristics among healthy pigs (A), sheep and goats (B), cattle (C), poultry (D), camels (E) and buffaloes (F). Special focus was given to the prevalence of nasal MRSA, MRSA-CC398, MRSA-CC9, mecC-MRSA, MSSA-CC398, and resistance to linezolid (LZDR), chloramphenicol (CLOR) and tetracycline (TETR) in S. aureus isolates. Of the 5492 studies identified, 146 comprised groups A(83)/B(18)/C(33)/D(4)/E(5)/F(3), and were found eligible. The overall pooled nasal prevalence of MRSA in healthy livestock was 13.8% (95% CI: 13.5-14.1) among a pooled 48,154 livestock population. Specifically, the pooled prevalence in groups A to F were: 16.0% (95% CI: 15.6-16.4), 3.7% (95% CI: 2.9-4.6), 13.6% (95% CI: 12.8-14.4), 5.8% (95% CI: 5.1-6.5), 7.1% (95% CI: 6.1-10.7), and 2.8% (95% CI: 1.5-4.8), respectively. These values varied considerably by continent. Varied pooled prevalences of CC398 lineage with respect to MRSA isolates were obtained, with the highest from pigs and cattle (>70%). Moreover, other classical animal-adapted MRSA as well as MSSA-CC398-t1928 were reported. TETR-MSSA was lowest in cattle (18.9%) and highest in pigs (80.7%). LZDR-S. aureus was reported in 8 studies (mediated by optrA and cfr), mainly in pigs (n = 4), while CLOR-S. aureus was reported in 32 studies. The virulence genes luk-S/F-PV, tst, etd, sea, see were sparsely reported, and only in non-CC398-MRSA lineages. Certain S. aureus clones and critical AMR appeared to have predominance in some livestock, as in the case of pigs that are high nasal carriers of MRSA-CC398 and -CC9, and MSSA-CC398. These findings highlight the need for adequate prevention against the transmission of zoonotic S. aureus lineages to humans.

Abstract
In terms of life- menaced contagion, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is known to be one of which and it is truly notable in the contaminated food causing a community health anxiety. However, the occurrence of S. aureus and MRSA in diverse kinds of dairy products have been tested in this study. Samples from: raw milk (unpasteurized) from horse, goat, camel, and cow origins and unpacked cheese were checked for the recovered strains of such bacterium and MRSA. Wholly, MRSA isolates were verified for antimicrobial susceptibility and further characterized by mecA and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) typing. Also, Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL), Staphylococcus aureus protein A (spa), and Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) were also tested between all positive MRSA isolates in order to discover the virulence factors. Consequently, 70% of the 100 collected dairy products samples were contaminated by S. aureus bacteria and 72.9% of them were defined as MRSA. 9.8% of MRSA isolates contained mecA genes with SCCmec type II (80%) as the most common SCCmec type. Moreover, large number of MRSA isolates were identified as multidrug resistance and 28.6% of MRSA-mecA positive isolates were also carried vancomycin resistance genes (i.e., vanB). Too, spa gene was detected between 9.8% of MRSA isolates but PVL gene was not spotted at all. Additionally, the existing of SEs was variable between MRSA isolates and the most common type was SEH (51%). In general, our results confirmed that raw milk and unpacked cheese in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (Riyadh) is a potential vehicle for multidrug resistant MRSA transmission. It is a critical civic health menace and stresses, thus; the need of applying well cleanliness practices is essential.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of different Staphylococcus species isolated from pathological processes and lesions in domestic animals in the Czech Republic and to detect and describe oxacillin (methicillin)-resistant strains (MRS). During the years 2019–2020, a total of 5218 veterinary clinical samples from the Czech Republic were tested. Testing was performed by culture methods and typing by molecular phenotypic methods MALDI-TOF MS and PCR. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of the strains was performed by the disk diffusion method. A total of 854 staphylococci strains were identified (16.37% prevalence), out of which 43 strains of 6 species of staphylococci were MRS (n = 43; 0.82% prevalence). Of the MRS strains, the most prevalent species were Staphylococcus pseudintermedius (n = 24; 0.46% prevalence) and Staphylococcus aureus (n = 7; 0.13% prevalence). Susceptibility testing showed resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics and, depending on the species, also to trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, gentamicin, tetracycline, erythromycin, clindamycin, and enrofloxacin. For further characterization of MRS, PCR assay for virulence factor genes was performed. Seven of the 14 target genes were observed only in S. aureus, except for the eno gene encoding laminin-binding protein, which was also detected in other staphylococci. It is necessary to emphasize the issue of correct using of antimicrobials in practice and antibiotic policy in university teaching and to create stricter legislation that would prevent the widespread use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine, especially in livestock to reduce the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance has been increasing globally, which negatively affects food safety, veterinary, and human medicine. Ineffective antibiotics may cause treatment failure, which results in prolonged hospitalisation, increased mortality, and consequently, increased health care costs. Staphylococcus aureus causes a diverse range of infections including septicaemia and endocarditis. However, in food, it mainly causes food poisoning by the production of enterotoxins. With the discovery of methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains that have a separate reservoir in livestock animals, which were termed as livestock-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus (LA-MRSA) in 2005, it became clear that animals may pose another health risk. Though LA-MRSA is mainly transferred by direct contact, food transmission cannot be excluded. While the current strains are not very pathogenic, mitigation is advisable, as they may acquire new virulence genes, becoming more pathogenic, and may transfer their resistance genes. Control of LA-MRSA poses significant problems, and only Norway has an active mitigation strategy. There is limited information about LA-MRSA, MRSA in general, and other S. aureus infections from African countries. In this review, we discuss the prevalence and characteristics of antimicrobial susceptible and resistant S. aureus (with a focus on MRSA) from meat and meat products in African countries and compare it to the situation in the rest of the world.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) are one of the best-known opportunistic pathogens capable of causing different types of infections in animals. Furthermore, it has the ability to acquire resistance to various antibiotics very easily. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) are currently of great concern as they are the leading cause of infections in humans and animals, with a major impact on health and the economy. Several studies already demonstrate that the spread of MRSA is constantly increasing due to its ability to form reservoirs in humans, animals and the environment. In fact, several works have already identified the presence of these bacteria in animals, including domestic animals, farm animals and even wild animals. Furthermore, the incidence of various S. aureus strains in aquatic animals has also been reported by different authors, although it is still a rarely discussed topic. Some of these strains have previously been associated with humans and other animals. Strain 398 is the strain that manages to infect a wider spectrum of hosts, having been identified in several different species. Aside from this strain, many others have yet to be identified. In addition, many of these strains have virulence factors and antibiotic resistance genes that worsen the situation. The present work is a review of studies that intend to investigate the epidemiology of this agent in samples of aquatic animals from different origins, in order to better understand its distribution, prevalence and the molecular lineages associated with these species.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus mainly Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is a life-threatening infection that occurring in food and caused a public health concern. This study designed to examine the prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA in different types of processed food. Food samples were screened for the recovered strains of S. aureus and MRSA, and they were examined for antimicrobial susceptibility and by molecular characterization of mecA and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec(SCCmec). Detection of virulence factors like Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL), Staphylococcus aureus protein A(spa) and Staphylococcal enterotoxins(SEs) by PCR using specific primers. Among the 150 collected processed food samples, 62.7% were contaminated by S. aureus bacteria, 56.4% of which were proved as MRSA. 17% of MRSA isolates were positive for mecA genes with the SCCmec type IVb and V (11.1% each) as the solely existing types of SCCmec. None of the MRSA isolates carried mecC or mecB genes. Most of MRSA isolates were multidrug resistance and 33.3% of MRSA-mecA positive isolates also carried vancomycin resistance genes (i.e., vanB). In addition, spa gene was found among 7.5% of MRSA isolates; none of which were positive for PVL gene. Further, there were variant presence of SEs among MRSA isolates and the highest presence was from type SEH (49.1%). Generally, our results confirmed that processed foods in Saudi Arabia (Riyadh) are potential vehicles for multidrug resistant S. aureus and MRSA transmission; which are serious public health risks, and underlined the need for good hygiene practices.

Abstract
Livestock-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (LA-MRSA) have emerged worldwide as zoonotic pathogens. Data on LA-MRSA in veal calf production in Italy are lacking; the aim of this survey was to fill current knowledge gaps in its prevalence and characteristics. Between February 2012 and January 2013 nasal swabs were taken from 1650 three- to six-month-old veal calves on 55 farms in Piedmont (northwest Italy), including gathering-related epidemiological data. S. aureus were screened for methicillin resistance by phenotypic and molecular (mecA gene detection) methods. MRSA were further genotyped by multilocus sequence typing. About 30% of the herds tested positive for MRSA: three different clonal complexes (CC398, CC97, and CC1) and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec types (IVa, IVb, and V) were detected. Multilevel logistic regression model indicated poor cleaning, importation from Austria, and animal age as risk factors and coagulase-negative staphylococci colonization as a predictive factor for the occurrence of MRSA. The detection of CCs circulating in pigs and dairy cattle in Italy underscores the ability of the LA-MRSA clones to spread among animal production systems. In addition to maintaining preventive control measures for human health, better cleaning procedures need to be implemented, especially after new calves have been introduced into the herd.

Abstract
Staphylococcal infections are a widespread cause of disease in humans. In particular, S. aureus is a major causative agent of infection in clinical medicine. In addition, these bacteria can produce a high number of staphylococcal enterotoxins (SE) that may cause food intoxications. Apart from S. aureus, many coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp. could be the source of food contamination. Thus, there is an active research work focused on developing novel preventative interventions based on food supplements to reduce the impact of staphylococcal food poisoning. Interestingly, many plant-derived compounds, such as polyphenols, flavonoids, or terpenoids, show significant antimicrobial activity against staphylococci, and therefore these compounds could be crucial to reduce the incidence of food intoxication in humans. Here, we reviewed the most promising strategies developed to prevent staphylococcal food poisoning.

Abstract
This study was designed to determine antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypes and virulence factors in Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) in unpasteurized milk sold in Djelfa, Algeria. Eighty-two unpasteurized cow milk samples were randomly obtained from 82 retail stores in Djelfa and tested to detect staphylococci. Species were identified by biochemical tests and MALDI-TOF. Antimicrobial resistance phenotypes and genotypes were determined by disk diffusion test, PCR, and sequencing. The Staph. aureus isolates were subjected to spa typing, multilocus sequence typing, and detection of virulence genes and the scn gene by PCR and sequencing. Forty-five (54.9%) milk samples were contaminated by staphylococci and 45 isolates were recovered: 10 Staph. aureus (12.2% of total samples) and 35 CNS (42.7%). Resistance to penicillin (blaZ), tetracycline (tetL/tetK), and erythromycin (ermB/msrA/ermC) were the most common phenotypes (genotypes). Three CNS were methicillin-resistant and all were mecA-positive. The Staph. aureus isolates were ascribed to the following lineages [spa type/sequence type/associated clonal complex (number of isolates)]: t267/ST479/CC479 (n = 6), t1510/ST5651/CC45 (n = 1), t359/ST97/CC97/ (n = 1), t346/ST15/CC15 (n = 1), and t044/ST80 (n = 1). The mecA gene was detected in the cefoxitin-susceptible t044/ST80 isolate and co-harbored the lukF/lukS-PV and scn genes. The detection of mecA-PVL-positive Staph. aureus, methicillin-resistant CNS, and multidrug-resistant staphylococcal species indicates a potentially serious health issue and reveals that unpasteurized milk sold in Djelfa city could be a potential vehicle for pathogenic and antimicrobial-resistant staphylococci.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is among the most common zoonotic pathogens that cause foodborne illnesses worldwide. The main objectives of the current study were therefore to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of S. aureus isolated from goats in Korea and to investigate the molecular characteristics of identified methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). In the study, 481 S. aureus isolates (431 from the nasal cavity and 50 from carcass) were recovered from 1146 carcasses and nasal swabs between July 2018 and January 2019. Approximately 82% and 72.6% of nasal and carcass isolates, respectively, were resistant to at least one antimicrobial agent, with the highest rate of resistance to penicillin, followed by resistance to chloramphenicol and tetracycline. Relatively small proportions of the isolates were resistant to cefoxitin, clindamycin, and erythromycin. However, all S. aureus isolates were sensitive to linezolid, rifampin, and vancomycin. Six MRSA isolates were obtained, three each from the nasal cavity and carcass. MRSA isolates were of two sequence types (ST) (ST72 and ST398), three spa types (t664, t324, and t571), and two SCCmec types (IV and V). The ST72 MRSA isolates had identical PFGE profiles. In addition, ST72 MRSA-SCCmec IV isolates carried at least six staphylococcal leukotoxin- and enterotoxin-encoding genes (lukED, seg, sei, sem, sen, seo, and seq). The remaining ST398 isolate carried only the lukED gene and was additionally resistant to eight non-β-lactam antibiotics. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of MRSA from goats in Korea. There is a possibility of transmission of MRSA from goat to human or contamination of food products. Therefore, regular microbiological investigation in goats, farms, and slaughterhouses is critical to determine the existence of virulent and multi-drug resistant (MDR) S. aureus and to implement preventive strategies.

Abstract
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) CC398 is a livestock-associated (LA) lineage, mainly detected in swine. Its dissemination via the food-chain could be a food-safety issue. This work aimed to study the diversity of S. aureus lineages in pork-products, to determine the prevalence of MRSA and methicillin-susceptible S. aureus (MSSA) of lineage CC398, and to study the antimicrobial resistance phenotype/genotype and the virulence traits of recovered isolates. One hundred and one samples of pig-derived food were collected in Northern Spain for S. aureus isolation. Antibiotic resistance profile was analysed, and associated resistance genes were screened by PCR. Detection of CC398 lineage, spa-type, multilocus sequence-type, virulence factors, immune evasion cluster (IEC) genes, and phage ΦSa3 integrase was performed by PCR/sequencing. The prevalence of S. aureus and MRSA among pig-derived food was 33.6% and 21.8%, respectively. Thirty-nine S. aureus isolates were recovered and attributed to 19 spa-types and 12 STs, ST398 being the predominant lineage (n = 25; 64%). MRSA-CC398 isolates (n = 23) were mainly spa-t011 (n = 16) and 82.6% were multidrug-resistant (MDR). All MRSA-CC398 were tetracycline-resistant and IEC-negative and four hosted either eta, tst or sea gene. The two MSSA-CC398 isolates detected were spa-t5452, IEC-positive, and were resistant to penicillin (blaZ) and erythromycin/clindamycin (inducible) (ermT with/without ermC + msrA). Among the 14 non-CC398 isolates, only two were MRSA (ST8, PVL-positive, enterotoxin-positive, IEC-negative). The 12 MSSA isolates included two of lineage CC45 and IEC-positive. CC398 lineage is prevalent among S. aureus of pig-derived food (both MRSA and MSSA), LA-MRSA-CC398/t011 being the clone most represented. The presence of the IEC-positive MSSA-CC398 and MSSA-CC45 isolates in food products highlights the potential implication of handlers in transmission of foodborne pathogens. Moreover, given the high frequency of MDR isolates and virulence genes detected, hygienic practices should be improved to limit the dissemination risk of S. aureus via the food chain.

Abstract
Background Food-producing animals can be a vehicle for staphylococcal species as well as their virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes. This work aimed to analyse the diversity of staphylococcal species in food-producing animals in Dakar/Senegal, and to determine the antimicrobial resistance phenotype/genotype and virulence factors of recovered isolates. Nasal samples of 149 cows and 199 chickens (348 animals) were collected from one slaughterhouse and a local market respectively, and were inoculated on selective media for staphylococci recovery. For S. aureus isolates, molecular typing (spa-type, MLST) was performed by PCR/sequencing, and the presence of 27 virulence genes (exfoliative and toxic shock toxins, PVL, haemolysins and enterotoxins) as well as the gene scn were analysed by PCR. Susceptibility to twelve antibiotics was studied by disc-diffusion method for all staphylococci; the resistance genes involved were screened by PCR. Results Staphylococcus spp. was present in 3 and 26.8% of chicken and cow nasal samples, respectively. Seven S. aureus isolates and forty isolates of other staphylococcal species were identified. S. aureus isolates were recovered from cow (n = 6) and chicken (n = 1) samples, belonging to four genetic lineages: t084/ST15 (n = 1); t10579/ST291 (n = 3); t355, t4690/ST152 (n = 2); and t6618/ST6 (n = 1). All S. aureus were methicillin-susceptible, penicillin-resistant (blaZ), and two of them were also tetracycline-resistant [tet(K)]. All the isolates carried at least one of the virulence genes tested. The PVL genes were detected in three ST15 and ST152 isolates. They all harboured haemolysins encoding genes and lacked the scn gene. The other staphylococci recovered were S. sciuri (n = 16), S. simulans (n = 11), S. hyicus (n = 5), S. haemolyticus (n = 4), S. chromogenes (n = 3), and S. hominis (n = 1); they were all methicillin-susceptible and 27.5% tetracycline-resistant [tet(K) and tet(L)]. Conclusions A low prevalence of S. aureus was detected among food-producing animals, all susceptible to methicillin. However, the presence of virulence genes (lukF/lukS-PV, eta, tst, sea and see) is worrisome to the extent that they could be transferred to derived food and therefore, to humans.

Abstract
Simple Summary Staphylococci are opportunistic pathogens which colonize humans and animals. Zoonotic transfer of staphylococcal species between domestic animals and humans is common and can occur through direct contact, the environment, and animal-derived food processing, implying a risk of the spread of antimicrobial resistance mechanisms and virulence factors into different ecosystems. Our work aimed at studying the diversity of staphylococcal species in nasal and faecal samples of healthy horses intended for human consumption and their resistance and virulence determinants. Staphylococci were detected in 90% and 66% of nasal and faecal samples tested, respectively. Eight staphylococcal species were detected, with the most prevalent ones being Staphylococcus aureus (all isolates were methicillin-susceptible), Staphylococcus delphini, and Staphylococcus sciuri. The predominant S. aureus lineage, ST1640, is associated with horses for the first time in this study. S. aureus isolates, except those of lineage ST1640, produced equid-adapted leukocidin (LukPQ) and blocker of equine complement system activation (eqSCIN). The toxic shock syndrome toxin-encoding gene was also detected in some S. aureus isolates. Multidrug resistance was observed among S. sciuri isolates, but not among S. aureus. Measures of hygiene and control should be implemented during horse slaughter and meat processing. Abstract This work aimed to determine the frequency and diversity of Staphylococcus species carriage in horses intended for human consumption, as well as their resistance and virulence determinants. Eighty samples (30 nasal; 50 faecal) were recovered from 73 healthy horses in a Spanish slaughterhouse. The samples were cultured for staphylococci and methicillin-resistant staphylococci (MRS) recovery. The phenotype/genotype of antimicrobial resistance was analysed for all isolates. The spa-type and sequence-type (ST) were determined in Staphylococcus aureus strains; moreover, the presence of virulence and host-adaptation genes (tst, eta, etb, pvl, lukPQ, scn-eq, and scn) was studied by PCR. Staphylococcus species were detected in 27/30 (90%) and 33/50 (66%) of nasal and faecal samples, respectively. Ninety isolates belonging to eight species were recovered, with predominance of S. aureus (n = 34), Staphylococcus delphini (n = 19), and Staphylococcus sciuri (n = 19). S. aureus strains were all methicillin-susceptible (MSSA), 28/34 were susceptible to all the antibiotics tested, and the remaining six showed resistance to (gene-detected) streptomycin (ant (6)-Ia), penicillin (blaZ), and trimetroprim/sulphametoxazole (SXT) (dfrA, dfrG). The lineage ST1640/t2559 was predominant (n = 21). The genes lukPQ and scn-eq were present in all but the ST1640 isolates. Three S. sciuri isolates were multidrug-resistant. Healthy horses in Spain seem to be a reservoir for virulent MSSA and the lineage ST1640, although the presence of the latter in horses is described for the first time in this study. Moreover, the equine-adapted leukocidin gene lukPQ is frequent among S. aureus strains. A large variety of staphylococcal species with low antibiotic resistance rate were also observed.
