Abstract
BACKGROUND The World Health Organization emphasizes the importance of integrated monitoring and evaluation in neglected tropical disease (NTD) control programs. Serological assays offer a potential solution for integrated diagnosis of NTDs, particularly for those requiring mass drug administration (MDA) as primary control and elimination strategy. This scoping review aims (i) to provide an overview of assays using serum or plasma to detect infections with soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) in both humans and animals, (ii) to examine the methodologies used in this research field and (iii) to discuss advancements in serological diagnosis of STHs to guide prevention and control programs in veterinary and human medicine. METHODOLOGY We conducted a systematic search in the Ovid MEDLINE, Embase and Cochrane Library databases, supplemented by a Google search using predefined keywords to identify commercially available serological assays. Additionally, we performed a patent search through Espacenet. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS We identified 85 relevant literature records spanning over 50 years, with a notable increased interest in serological assay development in recent years. Most of the research efforts concentrated on diagnosing Ascaris infections in both humans and pigs, primarily using ELISA and western blot technologies. Almost all records targeted antibodies as analytes, employing proteins and peptides as analyte detection agents. Approximately 60% of sample sets described pertained to human samples. No commercially available tests for Trichuris or hookworms were identified, while for Ascaris, there are at least seven different ELISAs on the market. CONCLUSIONS While a substantial number of assays are employed in epidemiological research, the current state of serological diagnosis for guiding STH prevention and control programs is limited. Only two assays designed for pigs are used to inform efficient deworming practices in pig populations. Regarding human diagnosis, none of the existing assays has undergone extensive large-scale validation or integration into routine diagnostics for MDA programs.

Abstract
The present paper describes the effect of glycyrrhizic acid contained in licorice roots on the quality of pork produced. The study uses advanced research methods as ion-exchange chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, drying of an average sample of muscle, and pressing method. The paper set out to investigate the effect of glycyrrhizic acid on the pig meat quality after deworming. Of particular concern is the animal body restoration after deworming that results in metabolic disorders. The nutrient content of meat reduces, the output of bones and tendons rises. This is the first report on the use of glycyrrhizic acid to increase the meat quality of pigs after deworming. The findings from this study indicated higher pork quality resulted from a favorable effect of GA on the chemical and amino acid composition of meat. The resulting data demonstrated that glycyrrhizic acid in the piglets' diet had a beneficial effect on the biochemical processes in their body. The main scientific provisions of this paper and its findings have several practical implications for veterinary specialists. They can also be recommended for the educational process. Another possible implication is the development of new drugs, methods, and treatment plans.

Abstract
The effects of nematodes and bacteria on intestinal health are of primary importance in modern swine production. The aim of the present study was to assess the seropositivity status of Ascaris suum infection in fatteners in intensive swine farms in Greece and address possible risk factors, including Lawsonia intracellularis as a predisposing factor to swine ascariosis. In total, 360 blood serum samples from pigs in the late fattening period, from 24 Greek swine farrow-to-finish farms (15 samples/farm) were collected and tested with Svanovir® A. suum antibody ELISA and Ileitis antibody ELISA. The results demonstrated 34.4% seropositive samples for A. suum and 42.2% for L. intracellularis. The analysis of predisposing risk factors suggested that the frequency of application of anthelminthic treatment to sows more than two times per year was significantly associated with the lower likelihood of A. suum infection, whereas a greater likelihood of A. suum infection was observed in pigs with concurrent L. intracellularis exposure. The results highlight the importance of proper anthelminthic metaphylaxis of the breeding stock, as well as the likely outcome of concurrent exposure to two intestinal pathogens in pigs, implying a possible association between intestinal nematodes and bacteria in swine.

Abstract
Fenbendazole, is an effective benzimidazole anthelmintic that prevents parasite infection in both human and veterinary health care. Although the well-known and effect of benzimidazole was recently shown to have a broad spectrum of biological abilities, such as anticancer and anti-inflammation activities, the mechanism of benzimidazole's antiproliferative effect via cell signaling pathways and its role in preimplantation has not been studied. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effects of fenbendazole on porcine trophectoderm and luminal epithelial cells. First, we investigated cell viability in response to a low dose of fenbendazole, which highly inhibited cell proliferation. In addition, we investigated apoptotic molecules in the mitochondria, imbalanced intracellular calcium homeostasis, and the expression of some genes involved in apoptosis to explain the decrease in proliferation. Finally, we examined the intracellular mechanisms of fenbendazole by measuring the extracellular signal-regulated kinase, PI3K/AKT, and c-Jun N-terminal kinase signaling proteins by western blot analysis. Our findings suggest that fenbendazole functions as an effective anti-proliferative molecule that induces critical apoptosis in the porcine trophectoderm and uterine luminal epithelial cells by disrupting the mitochondria membrane potential during early pregnancy.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a strategic deworming program on Ascaris suum infection levels and technical performance parameters in fattening pigs. Eighteen fattening stables were selected and divided into two groups. Group 1 consisted of 9 stables in which the fattening pigs tested seropositive for Ascaris, indicative for the presence of Ascaris eggs in the stable, whereas group 2 consisted of 9 stables in which the fattening pigs tested seronegative for Ascaris, indicating of a low or absent environmental contamination with Ascaris eggs. The production in each stable was monitored for a period of 7 consecutive fattening rounds. The first of these 7 fattening rounds (i.e. round 0), during which no intervention took place in the deworming strategy applied in the stable, served as a historical control. A deworming program using 200 mg/ml fenbendazole oral suspension in drinking water for 2 days every 6 weeks was implemented for a period of 6 consecutive fattening rounds. For each fattening round and for each stable, technical performance parameters including average daily growth, feed conversion ratio, days in fattening and the percentage of affected livers were obtained from the producers. Blood was collected from 10 randomly selected animals per stable at the end of each fattening round and evaluated for the presence of anti-Ascaris antibodies using 2 different serological tests, namely the AsHb- and the L3-Lung ELISA. The serological results obtained indicated a lower exposure of the animals to Ascaris after the implementation of a strategic deworming program. A significant decline in anti-Ascaris antibody levels was detectable in the stables that originally tested positive for Ascaris and was already visible after one treatment round. The outcomes of hierarchical linear mixed models indicated that the level of L3-Lung antibody reactivity was a significant predictor of decreased ADG, increased FCR and prolonged DIF for the Ascaris-positive herds, indicating an effect of Ascaris infections on productivity.
