Emission characteristics and probabilistic health risk of volatile organic compounds from leather sofa

Furniture is identified as a vital volatile organic compound (VOC) emission source in the indoor environment. Leather has become the most common raw and auxiliary fabric material for upholstered furniture, particularly with extensive consumption in sofas, due to its abundant resources and efficient functions. Despite being widely traded across the world, little research has been conducted on the VOCs released by leather materials and their health risk assessment in the indoor environment. Accordingly, this study investigated the VOC emissions of leather with different grades and the health risk of the inhalation exposure. Based on the ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose (EN) and GC-FID/Qtof, the substantial emissions of aliphatic aldehyde ketones (Aks), particularly hexanal, appear to be the cause of off-flavor in medium and low grade (MG and LG) sofa leathers. The health risk assessment indicated that leather materials barely pose non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects to residents. Given the abundance of VOC sources and the accumulation of health risks in the indoor environment, more stringent specifications concerning qualitative and quantitative content should be extended to provide VOC treatment basic for the manufacturing industry and obtain better indoor air quality.

Metal-Organic Frameworks in Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy-Based Analysis of Volatile Organic Compounds

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) are a major class of environmental pollutants hazardous to human health, but also highly relevant in other fields including early disease diagnostics and organoleptic perception of aliments. Therefore, accurate analysis of VOC is essential, and a need for new analytical methods is witnessed for rapid on-site detection without complex sample preparation. Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) offers a rapidly developing versatile analytical platform for the portable detection of chemical species. Nonetheless, the need for efficient docking of target analytes at the metallic surface significantly narrows the applicability of SERS. This limitation can be circumvented by interfacing the sensor surface with Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF). These materials featuring chemical and structural versatility can efficiently pre-concentrate low molecular weight species such as VOC through their ordered porous structure. This review presents recent trends in the development of MOF-based SERS substrates with a focus on elucidating respective design rules for maximizing analytical performance. An overview of the status of the detection of harmful VOC is discussed in the context of industrial and environmental monitoring. In addition, a survey of the analysis of VOC biomarkers for medical diagnosis and emerging applications in aroma and flavor profiling is included.

A critical review on characterization, human health risk assessment and mitigation of malodorous gaseous emission during the composting process

Composting has emerged as a suitable method to convert or transform organic waste including manure, green waste, and food waste into valuable products with several advantages, such as high efficiency, cost feasibility, and being environmentally friendly. However, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), mainly malodorous gases, are the major concern and challenges to overcome in facilitating composting. Ammonia (NH3) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), including hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and methyl mercaptan (CH4S), primarily contributed to the malodorous gases emission during the entire composting process due to their low olfactory threshold. These compounds are mainly emitted at the thermophilic phase, accounting for over 70% of total gas emissions during the whole process, whereas methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are commonly detected during the mesophilic and cooling phases. Therefore, the human health risk assessment of malodorous gases using various indexes such as ECi (maximum exposure concentration for an individual volatile compound EC), HR (non-carcinogenic risk), and CR (carcinogenic risk) has been evaluated and discussed. Also, several strategies such as maintaining optimal operating conditions, and adding bulking agents and additives (e.g., biochar and zeolite) to reduce malodorous emissions have been pointed out and highlighted. Biochar has specific adsorption properties such as high surface area and high porosity and contains various functional groups that can adsorb up to 60%-70% of malodorous gases emitted from composting. Notably, biofiltration emerged as a resilient and cost-effective technique, achieving up to 90% reduction in malodorous gases at the end-of-pipe. This study offers a comprehensive insight into the characterization of malodorous emissions during composting. Additionally, it emphasizes the need to address these issues on a larger scale and provides a promising outlook for future research.

Socio-environmental Opportunities for Organic Material Management in California's Sustainability Transition

Contemporary resource management is doubly burdened by high rates of organic material disposal in landfills, generating potent greenhouse gases (GHG), and globally degraded soils, which threaten future food security. Expansion of composting can provide a resilient alternative, by avoiding landfill GHG emissions, returning valuable nutrients to the soil to ensure continued agricultural production, and sequestering carbon while supporting local communities. Recognizing this opportunity, California has set ambitious organics diversion targets in the Short-Lived Climate Pollutant Law (SB1383) which will require significant increases (5 to 8 million tonnes per year) in organic material processing capacity. This paper develops a spatial optimization model to consider how to handle this flow of additional material while achieving myriad social and ecological benefits through compost production. We consider community-based and on-farm facilities alongside centralized, large-scale infrastructure to explore decentralized and diversified alternative futures of composting infrastructure in the state of California. We find using a diversity of facilities would provide opportunity for cost savings while achieving significant emissions reductions of approximately 3.4 ± 1 MMT CO2e and demonstrate that it is possible to incorporate community protection into compost infrastructure planning while meeting economic and environmental objectives.

Appropriate control measure design by rapidly identifying risk areas of volatile organic compounds during the remediation excavation at an organic contaminated site

Many organic contaminated sites require on-site remediation; excavation remediation processes can release many volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are key atmospheric pollutants. It is therefore important to rapidly identify VOCs during excavation and map their risk areas for human health protection. In this study, we developed a rapid analysis and assessment method, aiming to and reveal the real-time distribution of VOCs, evaluate their human health risks by quantitative models, and design appropriate control measures. Through on-site diagonal distribution sampling and analysis, VOCs concentration showed a decreasing trend within 5 m from the excavation point and then increased after 5 m with the increase in distance from the excavation point (p < 0.05). The concentrations of VOCs near the dominant wind direction were higher than the concentrations of surrounding pollutants. In contrast with conventional solid-phase adsorption (SPA) and thermal desorption gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (TD-GC/MS) methods for determining the composition and concentration of VOCs, the rapid measurement of VOCs by photo-ionization detector (PID) fitted well with the chemical analysis and modeling assessment of cancer/non-cancer risk. The targeting area was assessed as mild-risk (PID < 10 ppm), moderate-risk (PID from 10 to 40 ppm), and heavy-risk (PID > 40 ppm) areas. Similarly, the human health risks also decreased gradually with the distance from the excavation point, with the main risk area located in the dominant wind direction. The results of rapid PID assessment were comparable to conventional risk evaluation, demonstrating its feasibility in rapidly identifying VOCs releases and assessing the human health risks. This study also suggested appropriate control measures that are important guidance for personal protection during the remediation excavation process.

Release characteristics of volatile organic compounds at residential garbage collection points: a case study of Hangzhou, China

With the implementation of garbage classification, perishable waste has become increasingly concentrated. This has led to a significant change in the VOC release characteristics at residential garbage collection points, posing a potential risk with unknown characteristics. This study investigated the release characteristics, odor pollution, and health risks of VOCs at garbage collection points under different classification effectiveness, seasons, garbage drop-off periods, and garbage collection point types. The results showed that the average concentration of VOCs released from the garbage sorting collection points (SPs) was 341.43 ± 261.16 μg/m3, and oxygenated compounds (e.g., ethyl acetate and acetone) were the main VOC components. The VOC concentration increased as the community classification effectiveness improved, and it was higher in summer (followed by spring, autumn, and winter). Moreover, the VOC concentrations were higher in the evenings than in the mornings and at centralized garbage collection points (CPs) than at SPs. Further, odor activity value (OAV) assessments indicated that acrolein, styrene, and ethyl acetate were the critical odorous components, with an average OAV of 0.87 ± 0.85, implying marginal odor pollution in some communities. Health risk assessments further revealed that trichloroethylene, benzene, and chlorotoluene were the critical health risk substances, with an average carcinogenic risk (CR) value of 10-6-10-4, and a non-carcinogenic risk (HI) value < 1. These results indicated that HIs were acceptable, but potential CRs existed in the communities. Therefore, VOC pollution prevention and control measures should be urgently strengthened at the garbage collection points in high pollution risk scenarios.

VOCs hyperspectral imaging: A new insight into evaluate emissions and the corresponding health risk from industries

The harm of VOCs emitted from industries to surrounding atmospheric environment and human health was well known and had received continuous attention. In order to improve the quality of urban atmospheric environment and the living environment of urban residents, a large number of original urban industries had been relocated to economically underdeveloped suburbs, which has significantly deteriorated the atmospheric environment in these areas and brought potential health risks to local vulnerable residents, which is actually an unfair manifestation under the background of economic development and ecological civilization construction. There were many residents near industrial parks, but there was a significant lack of VOCs monitoring equipment and data. At present, the time resolution of the most commonly used in situ method was seriously insufficient, and it was unable to quantify the diffusion/transport process of VOCs. It was urgent to have effective detection methods for industrial VOCs plume concentration and diffusion/transport process. In this study, we proposed a hyperspectral imaging technology, which can realize long-term continuous imaging monitoring on plume concentrations of formaldehyde (HCHO), glyoxal (CHOCHO) and benzaldehyde (C6H5CHO) and their corresponding diffusion processes. The deviation between the imaging and in situ sampling concentrations in the outlet was 4-19 %. The spatial resolution of this technique reached meter level, and the temporal resolution of one pixel was better than 20 s. In this study, we carried out hyperspectral imaging of aldehyde VOCs for a chemical facility, a petrochemical facility and an industrial park containing various types of enterprises in the Yangtze River Delta. The maximum observed concentration of HCHO was 120.44 ± 12.14 ug/m3 with the emission flux of 39.27 ± 3.97 g/h, which was emitted from a petrochemical facility in Shanghai. A diffusion/transport model was established, and we found that the spatial distribution of HCHO, CHOCHO and C6H5CHO for the chemical facility case in Shanghai were all mainly along the southeast-northwest direction during one year. The health risk assessment emphasized that residents within 10 km north of the outlet of the chemical facility in Shanghai should pay more attention to the health risks caused by industrial HCHO emissions. More systematically and comprehensively hyperspectral imaging of VOCs emissions for different types of enterprises and different processes were expected to performed to greatly promote the establishment of a dynamic emission inventory and an effective health risk evaluation system in the future.

Application of Composts' Biochar as Potential Sorbent to Reduce VOCs Emission during Kitchen Waste Storage

It is expected that due to the new European Union regulation focus on waste management, managing kitchen waste will become more important in the future, especially in households. Therefore, it is crucial to develop user-friendly and odour-free containers to store kitchen waste. The study aimed to test the effectiveness of composts' biochar in reducing noxious odours and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released during kitchen waste storage. Various amounts of compost biochar (0%, 1%, 5%, and 10%) were added to food waste samples and incubated for seven days at 20 °C. The released VOCs were analysed on days 1, 3, and 7 of the storage simulation process. The results indicated that adding 5-10% of composts' biochar to kitchen waste significantly reduced the emissions in 70% of the detected VOCs compounds. Furthermore, composts' biochar can be used to eliminate potential odour components and specific dangerous VOCs such as ethylbenzene, o-xylene, acetic acid, and naphthalene. A new composts' biochar with a unique composition was particularly effective in reducing VOCs and could be an excellent solution for eliminating odours in kitchen waste containers.

Real-time emission characteristics, health risks, and olfactory effects of VOCs released from soil disturbance during the remediation of an abandoned chemical pesticide industrial site

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) released along with soil disturbance during the remediation of abandoned industrial sites have attracted great attention due to their possible toxicity and odour. However, the real-time emission characteristics of these VOCs and their subsequent effects on health and olfaction are less understood. In this study, the gaseous VOCs released from soil disturbance by excavators and drilling rigs at an abandoned chemical pesticide plant were monitored online with a laboratory-built single photoionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (SPI-TOFMS). Twelve main VOCs with total mean concentrations ranging from 2350 to 3410 μg m-3 were observed, with dichloromethane (DCM) having a significant contribution. The total concentrations of the remaining 11 VOCs increased substantially during soil disturbance, with the total mean concentrations increasing from 18.65-39.05 to 37.95-297.94 μg m-3 and those of peak concentrations increasing from 28.46-58.97 to 88.38-839.13 μg m-3. This increase in VOC concentrations during soil disturbance leads to an enhanced heath risk for on-site workers. The distinctive difference between the mean and peak concentrations of VOCs indicates the importance of using mean and peak concentrations, respectively, for risk and olfactory evaluation due to the rapid response of the human nose to odours. As a result, the cumulative noncarcinogenic risk at the relatively high pollutant plot was higher than the occupational safety limit, while the total carcinogenic risks at all monitored scenarios exceeded the acceptable limit. Among the VOCs investigated, DCM and trichloroethylene (TCE) were determined to be crucial pollutants for both noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks of VOCs. With regard to olfactory effects, organic sulphides, including dimethyl disulphide (DMDS), dimethyl sulphide (DMS), and dimethyl trisulphide (DMTS) were identified as dominant odour contributors (78.28-92.11%) during soil disturbance.

Non-negligible health risks caused by inhalation exposure to aldehydes and ketones during food waste treatments in megacity Shanghai

Aldehydes and ketones in urban air continue to receive regulatory and scientific attention for their environmental prevalence and potential health hazard. However, current knowledge of the health risks and losses caused by these pollutants in food waste (FW) treatment processes is still limited, especially under long-term exposure. Here, we presented the first comprehensive assessment of chronic exposure to 21 aldehydes and ketones in urban FW-air environments (e.g., storage site, mechanical dewatering, and composting) by coupling substantial measured data (383 samples) with Monte Carlo-based probabilistic health risk and impact assessment models. The results showed that acetaldehyde, acetone, 2-butanone and cyclohexanone were consistently the predominant pollutants, although the significant differences in pollution profiles across treatment sites and seasons (Adonis test, P < 0.001). According to the risk assessment results, the estimated cancer risk (CR; mean range: 1.6 × 10^-5-1.12 × 10^-4) and non-cancer risk (NCR; mean range: 2.98-22.7) triggered by aldehydes and ketones were both unacceptable in most cases (CR: 37.8%-99.3%; NCR: 54.2%-99.8%), and even reached the limit of concern to CR (1 × 10^-4) in some exposure scenarios (6.18%-16.9%). Application of DALYs (disability adjusted life years) as a metric for predicting the damage suggested that exposure of workers to aldehydes and ketones over 20 years of working in FW-air environments could result in 0.02-0.14 DALYs per person. Acetaldehyde was the most harmful constituent of all targeted pollutants, which contributed to the vast majority of health risks (>88%) and losses (>90%). This study highlights aldehydes and ketones in FW treatments may be the critical pollutants to pose inhalation risks.

Generation characteristics and spreading risk of VOCs released from a biological fermentation pharmaceutical factory

Pharmaceutical factories produce a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which may pose a potential health threat to the environment, workers, and nearby residents. Sampling points were set up in the tylosin biological fermentation workshop (FW) and sewage treatment station (STS) of a pharmaceutical factory in a central city in northern China to collect VOCs and study their generation characteristics and diffusion. The results indicated that with the increase in fermentation time, VOC production decreased gradually, and the decline was rapid. The main VOCs produced by the FW are oxygen-containing organics and nitrogen-containing organics including 1-heptyladehyde (8.86 × 10² mg m^-3), 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (6.36 × 10² mg m^-3) and benzene (5.85 × 10² mg m^-3). The STS mainly produces nitrogen-containing organics and oxygen-containing organics including 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (3.38 × 10³ mg m^-3), diethyl amine (9.60 × 10² mg m^-3) and methyl ethyl ketone (2.98 × 10² mg m^-3). VOCs produced by biopharmaceutical factories can diffuse for a long distance in the atmosphere. The highest concentration of chlorinated organic compounds can spread to 11.43 kilometers in the horizontal direction and 3 kilometers in the vertical direction. Acetaldehyde, butyraldehyde, diethylamine, butyl acetate and methyl ethyl ketone are odorous gases detected in the FW and STS, respectively. Benzene, carbon tetrachloride and acetaldehyde are the main carcinogenic VOCs produced in the fermentation process of tylosin. The research elucidated production characteristics, diffusion and health risks of VOCs in the FW, which provided a reference for the control of VOCs.

Emission of odor pollutants and variation in microbial community during the initial decomposition stage of municipal biowaste

Odor pollution often occurs in the initial decomposition stage of municipal biowaste, including throwing/collection and transportation. However, this aspect of odor impact from municipal biowaste has not been well studied. In this study, a practical dustbin (120 L) equipped with flux chamber and filled with three types of municipal biowaste was used to simulate garbage storage conditions. The result indicated that the emission rate of odor pollutants for uncooked food waste (UFW) represented a nearly linear growth trend, reaching the maximum (3963 ± 149 μg kg^-1 DM h^-1) at 72 h. Cooked food waste (CFW) increased rapidly from 8 h to 24 h, and then remain fluctuated, reached the maximum (2026 ± 77 μg kg^-1 DM h^-1) at 72 h. Comparatively, household kitchen waste (HKW) reached the maximum emission rate (10,396 ± 363 μg kg^-1 DM h^-1) at 16 h. Sulfide and aldehydes ketones were identified as dominant odor contributor to UFW and CFW, respectively. While aldehydes ketones and sulfides were both dominant odor contributor to HKW. Moreover, the microbial diversity analysis suggests that Acinetobacter was the dominant genus in UFW, and Lactobacillus was the dominant genus in CFW and HKW. In addition, it was evident that each odorous pollutant was significantly associated with two or more bacterial genera, and most bacterial genera such as Acinetobacter, were also significantly associated with multiple odorous pollutants. The variation of odorants composition kept consistent with microbial composition. The present study could provide essential evidence for a comprehensive understanding of odorant generation in the initial decomposition stage of municipal biowaste. It could contribute to setting out strategies for odor control and abatement in municipal biowaste management systems.

Inhalation health risk assessment of incineration and landfill in the Bohai Rim, China

An inhalation health risks assessment of 96 waste to energy (WtE) plants and 178 landfills in the Bohai Rim, located in northeast China, has been conducted. Based on the latest emission inventories in 2020, WRF/CALPUFF was used to simulate the diffusion of pollutants. Population-weighted hazard index (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of incineration and landfill for each pollutant and each target organ impacted were calculated. The health risks of incineration and landfill were correlated with per capita municipal solid waste (MSW) disposal quantity, emission factors, pollutant toxic effects and local migration and diffusion conditions. The HI of incineration and landfill in the Bohai Rim were 4.07 × 10^-3 and 4.79 × 10^-3, respectively, which was lower than the acceptable level (HI < 1), while the CR of incineration and landfill were 4.72 × 10^-7 and 2.58 × 10^-7, respectively, which was also lower than the acceptable level (CR < 1 × 10^-6). The non-carcinogenic risks of incineration mainly targeted respiratory system and development system, while the non-carcinogenic risks of landfill mainly targeted nervous system and respiratory system. The carcinogenic risks of incineration mainly targeted respiratory system and digestive system, while the carcinogenic risks of landfill mainly targeted hepatic system and respiratory system. With the trend that incineration phase in, while landfill phase out, the number of patients for 15 target organ diseases caused by the disposal of unit mass MSW would decrease in the Bohai Rim, ranging from 1.8 × 10^-8 - 1.8 × 10^-2 (pop/t)，especially in developed provinces, such as Beijing and Tianjin. However, the number of patients for 4 target organ diseases caused by the disposal of unit mass MSW would increase, ranging from 1.18 × 10^-6 - 5.28 × 10^-3 (pop/t). Based on pollutants' pathogenic mechanisms, this study innovatively accessed and compared incineration and landfill's health risks of target organs, and provide technical and policy suggestions based on the changing trend of MSW disposal methods in the future.

Effect of biochar addition on the improvement of the quality parameters of compost used for land reclamation

The 5% addition of biochar in composting in rows contributes significantly to reducing volatile organic compound(VOC) emissions. When composting with the addition of biochar, the average temperature increased by 13 ± 6.7 °C during the whole period, and the thermophilic phase was extended by 11 days. The higher temperature supported a reduction in the time necessary for achieving the biological stability observed by the oxygen uptake rate by more than 10 days. For organic compounds formed by the degradation of easily degradable primary components (proteins), the addition of biochar significantly reduces the release of organic compounds with heterocyclically bound nitrogen (N_org-VOCs) and volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs). The end of the biodegradation process is indicated by a decrease in VOC concentrations below initial values in the input material. This state was achieved in the compost with added biochar after 47 days, while in compost without added biochar, it lasted 60 days.

The variation of odor characteristics of wastewater sludge treated by advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) and the contribution pattern of key odorants

Identification of the odor characteristics of wastewater sludge is important in the evaluation of sludge quality and disposal options considering that sludge odor nuisance may cause major environmental issues. In this study, raw sludge and sludge cake were collected from five WWTPs applied advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) sludge treatment process to clarify the variation of odor characteristics using sensory analysis and instrumental analysis. The electronic nose, gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS) and gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) were used to profile and identify the chemical composition of key odorants. A total of 20 odorants were identified and quantified, including 6 groups of chemicals, among which volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), indole, 3-methylindole and geosmin were identified as key odorants. The odor of the dewatered digested sludge was improved by means of changing the odor character from fecal/sulfide to earthy odor due to the reduction in VSCs concentration. The AAD and subsequent dewatering process resulted in effective removal of VSCs, which are important constituents that impact the sludge odor characteristics through synergistic effect on fecal odorants and masking effect on earthy odorants. Moreover, due to the variation of sludge quality after AAD treatment, the emission capacity of indole, 3-methylindole, and other volatiles increased, which could not be neglected for the formation of unique sludge odor.

Chemical identification and quantification of volatile organic compounds emitted by sewage sludge

The recycling of organic waste products (e.g. sewage sludge, SS) is currently being promoted as a substitute for mineral fertilizers for agricultural lands. The spreading of SS allows the recycling of the nutrients and organic matter it contains. SS contains various pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that adversely affect the ecosystem and human health through ozone production and serve as critical precursors of atmospheric secondary organic aerosols. There are very few studies quantifying the gaseous compounds emitted from SS, and those studies primarily address their odorant properties for identifying suitable odour abatement techniques. There is an urgent need for more comprehensive quantitative information on VOCs emitted from SS as aerosol precursors. In this context, an experimental study was performed on SS samples taken from a wastewater treatment plant located in France. Undigested SS (UDSS), digested SS (DSS) and SS with 30% and 60% dryness were collected from different stages of treatment sequence and analyzed using atmospheric simulation chambers coupled to proton-transfer-reaction quadrupole ion-guide time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Our study revealed that SS samples emitted a large spectrum of VOCs. 380 compounds were detected, quantified and classified into different chemical groups. The VOC emissions increased with the increase in the dryness of the sample; the highest being in SS 60%, followed by SS 30%, UDSS and DSS. OVOCs were dominant in SS 60%. The statistical analysis showed that the anaerobic digestion and the dewatering to 60% of dryness decreased the emissions of sulphuric compounds. Aromatic compounds and indoles (e.g. skatole) were emitted significantly from the UDSS. Some of these VOCs can serve as precursor gases for atmospheric aerosol formation. The experimental dataset obtained in this study provides an accurate inventory reference for the VOC emissions from SS samples and shows the impacts of the treatment on emission characteristics of VOCs.

Spatiotemporal footprints of odor compounds in megacity's food waste streams and policy implication

Odor pollution is one of the most critical issues in food waste (FW) recycling and has significant implications for human health. However, knowledge of their occurrence and spatiotemporally dynamic in urban FW streams is limited, making it not conducive to implement targeted odor management. This work followed the occurrence of 81 odor compounds (OCs) in nine FW-air environments along the Shanghai's FW streams for one year. Results showed that NH₃, acetic acid, acetaldehyde, acetone, 2-butanone, and methylene chloride were consistently the predominant OCs, despite the distinct differences in OCs profiles across seasons and treatment sites. Ridge regression and principal coordinate analysis demonstrated that seasons might play a non-negligible role in shaping odor profiles, and ambient temperature and humidity could account for the seasonal variation in OCs levels. Based on the modified fuzzy synthetic evaluation system, the screened priority pollutants in different FW-air environments were found broadly similar and the regulated air pollutants released via FW should be expanded to aldehyde and ketone compounds, especially for acetaldehyde. To our knowledge, this study is the first to track the spatiotemporal footprints of OCs within urban FW streams, and provides new insights into the control policy on FW-derived odor issues for megacities.

Odor emissions: A public health concern for health risk perception

The olfactory nuisance, due to the emissions of active molecules, is mainly associated with unproperly managed waste disposal and animal farming. Volatile compounds e.g., aromatics, organic and inorganic sulfide compounds, as well as nitrogen and halogenated compounds are the major contributor to odor pollution generated by waste management plants; the most important source of atmospheric ammonia is produced by livestock farming. Although an odorous compound may represent a nuisance rather than a health risk, long-term exposure to a mixture of volatile compounds may represent a risk for different diseases, including asthma, atopic dermatitis, and neurologic damage. Workers and communities living close to odor-producing facilities result directly exposed to irritant air pollutants through inhalation and for this reason the cumulative health risk assessment is recommended. Health effects are related to the concentration and exposure duration to the odorants, as well as to their irritant potency and/or biotransformation in hazardous metabolites. The health effects of a single chemical are well known, while the interactions between molecules with different functional groups have still to be extensively studied. Odor emissions are often due to airborne pollutants at levels below the established toxicity thresholds. The relationship between odor and toxicity does not always occurs but depends on the specific kind of pollutant involved. Indeed, some toxic agents does not induce odor nuisance while untoxic agents do. Accordingly, the relationship between toxicity and odor nuisance should be always analyzed in detail evaluating on the characteristics of the airborne mixture and the type of the source involved.

Health risks of inhalation exposure to BTEX in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Middle East city: Shiraz, Iran

Benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylene, known as BTEX, adversely affect human health. This study aimed to measure BTEX concentration and assess the health risk through inhalation exposure to these compounds in a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The ambient air samples were collected using the active sampling method in summer and winter. Sampling sites were close to wastewater treatment units, including bar screen & grit chamber (Site-1), aeration tank & secondary clarifiers (Site-2), anaerobic sludge digester (Site-3), and office & control building (Site-4). Results indicate that the mean levels of benzene and toluene in winter were higher than in summer. The levels of benzene and toluene were below the occupational exposure levels of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The carcinogenic risk (CR) and hazard quotient (HQ) were assessed using the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S.EPA) method, and Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) was applied to quantify the uncertainty and sensitivity analysis. The CRs for all sampling sites were below the U.S.EPA threshold limit (1.0 × 10^-4). The HQ values for benzene nearby Site-2 were above 1.0, indicating inhalation exposure could pose a health hazard. Besides, the HQ results for exposure to toluene in all sampling sites were less than 1.0. The sensitivity analysis had shown that the risk determinant for carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk was exposure time, followed by concentration.

Hierarchical porous structure formation mechanism in food waste component derived N-doped biochar: Application in VOCs removal

Nitrogen-doped (N-doped) hierarchical porous carbon was widely utilized as an efficient volatile organic compounds (VOCs) adsorbent. In this work, a series of N-doped hierarchical porous carbons were successfully prepared from the direct pyrolysis process of three food waste components. The porous biochar that derived from bone showed a high specific surface area (1405.06 m²/g) and sizable total pore volume (0.97 cm³/g). The developed hierarchical porous structure was fabricated by the combined effect of self-activation (Carbon dioxide (CO₂) and water vapor (H₂O)) and self-template. The emission characteristics of activation gas analyzed by Thermogravimetric-Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (TG-FTIR) and the transformation of ash composition in the biochar help to illustrate the pore-forming mechanism. Calcium oxide (CaO) and hydroxylapatite were confirmed as the major templates for mesopores, while the decomposition processes of calcium carbonate (CaCO₃) and hydroxylapatite provided a large amount of activation gas (CO₂ and H₂O) to form micropores. The materials also obtained abundant N-containing surface functional groups (up to 7.84 atomic%) from pyrolysis of protein and chitin. Finally, the porous biochar showed excellent performance for VOCs adsorption with a promising uptake of 288 mg/g for toluene and a high adsorption rate of 0.189 min^-1. Aplenty of mesopores distributed in the materials effectively improved the mass transfer behaviors, the adsorption rate got a noticeable improvement (from 0.118 min^-1 to 0.189 min^-1) benefited from mesopores. Reusable potentials of the hierarchical porous carbons were also satisfying. After four thermal regeneration cycles, the materials still occupied 84.8%-87.4% of the original adsorption capacities.

Health risks of odorous compounds during the whole process of municipal solid waste collection and treatment in China

The high moisture content and perishable organic waste of municipal solid waste (MSW) in China have caused the severe odor nuisance to be one of the crucial reasons for resident complaints. Understanding the environmental risks of odorous compounds lays the foundations for resolving the problems. This study collected concentration data of 86 odorous compounds in five types of MSW processing facilities/equipment which can well represent the whole process of MSW stream, including waste bins and transfer stations for collection, compost plants and anaerobic digestion plants for utilization, and landfills for final disposal. The results revealed that the occupational health risks of odorants were not fully consistent with the compound concentrations and olfactory annoyance. Higher odorous compound concentrations and more severe olfactory annoyance can be found in the MSW utilization and disposal facilities, but the occupational carcinogenic risk (2.79 × 10^-5-1.12 × 10^-3) was non-negligible along the whole MSW stream. Aromatic hydrocarbons and halogenated hydrocarbons were crucial contributors to the carcinogenic risk of odorous compounds emission from these facilities. Particularly for estimating the adverse impact range of MSW facilities, the carcinogenic risk was the most critical factor, implying impact distance of ∼1.5 km for MSW transfer station and ∼5 km for landfill, and even higher for the regions (such as southwest China) with lower wind speed and higher atmospheric stability. In addition to current regulations, another 5 compounds (acetaldehyde, 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, acrolein, and benzyl chloride) that displayed high carcinogenic risks were suggested to be concerned. This study provided insights for the policymakers regarding MSW odors management, especially underscoring the importance of considering the health risks of odorous compounds.

Succession of the microbial community during the process of mechanical and biological pretreatment coupled with a bio-filter for removal of VOCs derived from domestic waste: a field study

Changes in the microbial community can not only reflect the efficiency of waste disposal, but also reveal the effect of odor control during the treatment process. This study aimed to evaluate the removal efficiency of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) by the process of mechanical and biological pretreatment (MBP) coupled with a bio-filter (BF). An interesting phenomenon was found that the VOCs were effectively reduced through the MBP process. To understand the removal mechanism of VOCs, the abundance and diversity of microbial bacteria and fungi in the biological dehydration (BD) process, biological fermentation process, and BF process were explored. The abundance and diversity of microbes in the BF were relatively high, of which the bacteria such as Lactobacillus, Bacillus and Candida were the dominant species for VOCs treatment. The proposed technical process and the positive effects observed in this study indicate that it could be applied to the control of VOCs in the treatment of domestic waste.

Reduction in VOC emissions by intermittent aeration in bioreactor landfills with gas-water joint regulation

Landfill mining and reclamation is a new strategy for addressing the lack of space available for new landfills and realizing the sustainable development of landfills. A gas-water joint bioreactor landfill is regulated by injecting water and/or recirculating leachate, and a blasting aeration system to optimize waste stabilization. In this study, four landfill reactors were constructed to investigate the effects of ventilation methods, including continuous (20 h d^-1) and intermittent aeration (4 h d^-1 in continuous or 2-h aeration per 12 h, twice a day), on the degradation of organic matter and volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions in comparison with traditional landfills. A total of 62 VOCs were detected in the landfill reactors. Among them, halogenated compounds had the highest abundance (39.8-65.4 %), followed by oxygenated compounds, alkanes and alkenes, and aromatic compounds. Both intermittent and continuous aeration could accelerate the degradation of landfilled waste and increase the volatilization rate of VOCs. Compared with intermittent aeration, the degradation of landfilled waste was more quickly in the landfill reactor with continuous aeration. However, intermittent aeration could create anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic conditions, which were conducive to the growth and metabolism of anaerobic and aerobic microorganisms in landfills and thereby reduced more than 63.4 % of total VOC emissions from the landfill reactor with continuous aeration. Moreover, intermittent aeration could reduce the ventilation rate and decrease the cost of aeration by 80 % relative to continuous aeration. Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria and Tenericutes predominated in the landfill reactors. The environmental variables including organic matter and VOCs concentrations had significant influences on microbial community structure in the landfilled waste. These findings indicated that intermittent aeration was an effective way to accelerate the stabilization of landfilled waste and reduce the cost and environmental risks in bioreactor landfills with gas-water joint regulation.

Nanostructured Gas Sensors: From Air Quality and Environmental Monitoring to Healthcare and Medical Applications

In the last decades, nanomaterials have emerged as multifunctional building blocks for the development of next generation sensing technologies for a wide range of industrial sectors including the food industry, environment monitoring, public security, and agricultural production. The use of advanced nanosensing technologies, particularly nanostructured metal-oxide gas sensors, is a promising technique for monitoring low concentrations of gases in complex gas mixtures. However, their poor conductivity and lack of selectivity at room temperature are key barriers to their practical implementation in real world applications. Here, we provide a review of the fundamental mechanisms that have been successfully implemented for reducing the operating temperature of nanostructured materials for low and room temperature gas sensing. The latest advances in the design of efficient architecture for the fabrication of highly performing nanostructured gas sensing technologies for environmental and health monitoring is reviewed in detail. This review is concluded by summarizing achievements and standing challenges with the aim to provide directions for future research in the design and development of low and room temperature nanostructured gas sensing technologies.

Facile synthesis of tailored mesopore-enriched hierarchical porous carbon from food waste for rapid removal of aromatic VOCs

Due to the large amount, environmental impact, and complex properties of accumulated food waste, its disposal and valorization has become a growing global concern and challenges. In this study, a series of mesopore-enriched hierarchical porous carbons were synthesized from a mixture of two food waste components (peptone and bone). The prepared materials were employed for the rapid adsorption of aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The pore structures, morphology and surface chemistry of the food waste-based microporous activated carbon (PCs) and mesopore-enriched hierarchical porous carbons (PC/BCs) were characterized and then compared. PC/BCs presented larger pore volume (2.45 cm³/g vs. 1.25 cm³/g) than the PCs because of their activation and the template effect of the bone, allowing them to exhibit satisfactory adsorption capacities (139.5 mg/g for benzene and 440.7 mg/g for toluene) and adsorption rate (0.285 min^-1 for benzene and 0.236 min^-1 for toluene) for aromatic VOCs. In addition, a strong linear relationship (R² = 0.957) was also established between the adsorption rate k and total pore volume, highlighting the role of mesopores in PC/BCs, which contributed 60% to the total pore volume, during the rapid capture of VOCs. Further, PC/BCs also showed excellent thermal regeneration performance for more than four runs. The results of this study provide a feasible approach to fabricating mesopore-enriched hierarchical porous carbon from food waste, which could enable the rapid removal of VOCs.

Trace volatile compounds in the air of domestic waste landfill site: Identification, olfactory effect and cancer risk

Landfill sites are regarded as sources of volatile compounds (VOCs) and odors emitted to the atmosphere. Surface emissions of VOCs and odors were investigated in a rural domestic waste landfill site located in southwest China. A total of 76 chemical compounds belonging to 3 chemical families were identified and quantified. The total number of VOCs (TVOC) detected ranged from 18.1 to 806.3 mg/m³, while odorous gases and greenhouse gases ranged from 0.4 to 21.2 and 0-100.5 mg/m³, respectively. High emissions were found in the air surrounding the leachate storage pool (LSP) and dumping area (DPA). The dominant species of VOCs were hexaldehyde, m-xylene, propylene oxide, acetophenone, and 2-butanone. The traceability analysis showed that the odors and VOCs diffused to the downwind boundary mainly came from the DPA and LSP. According to the olfactory effect analysis and cancer risk assessment, the main odor-causing gaseous pollutants were hydrogen sulfide, propionic acid, styrene, and 2-pentanone, while benzene, trichlorethylene, and 1,3-butadiene were the dominant carcinogens. This study provides new insights into the emission characteristics, olfactory effects, and cancer risks of VOCs and odors emitted from rural domestic solid waste landfill sites.

Composition and profiles of volatile organic compounds during waste decomposition by the anaerobic bacteria purified from landfill

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) become concerned pollutants in landfill gases, and their composition and concentration varied significantly during waste decomposition. Many environmental factors are known to affect VOC emissions, while the effect of indigenous bacteria in wastes on VOC production remains elusive. In this study, a simplified anaerobic degradation experiment, with the single substrate and the purified bacteria from a landfill, was set up to measure the degradation process and the dynamic changes of VOCs. The experiment excluded the abiotic factors for VOC variation. The two isolated bacteria, identified as Sporanaerobacter acetigenes and Clostridium sporogenes, could anaerobically ferment amino acids by Stickland reaction. They produced 51 and 57 species of VOCs in the experiment, respectively. The concentration changes of VOCs over bacterial growth and fermentation were clustered into four types by principal component analysis: three profiles were regular, similar to the variation of nitrate, hydrogen sulfide, and the major fermentation products (carbon dioxide, ammonium, and volatile organic acids), respectively; while one profile was unique to any degradation indicator. The various concentration profiles indicated different origins for VOCs, possibly from the extracellular environment, fermentation, and secondary reactions. The findings provide insights into the understanding of VOC diversity and variability during waste decomposition.

A methodology for the technical-economic analysis of municipal solid waste systems based on social cost-benefit analysis with a valuation of externalities

Countries face a serious problem due to the generation and management of higher volumes of waste. Large-scale production of waste has promoted the establishment of various operations (collection, transport, treatment and disposal) for its management. When a MSW management system is implemented, it can generate different impacts or consequences (internal or external impacts). Generally, external impacts (social and environmental impacts) are not reflected in MSW economic analysis or taken into consideration in decision-making processes in regard to MSW management options. For this reason, the objective of this paper is present a methodology with which is viable to conduct the technical-economic analysis of municipal solid waste management projects based on social cost-benefit analysis (sCBA) as it considers internal and external impacts. Its main objectives are to determine the total benefits (the difference between revenues and costs) generated by a project and to reduce uncertainty and risk of investing in particular MSW management system. Finally, a case study was carried out to verify the validity of the methodology through analysis and valuation of different impacts of a light packaging waste and bulky waste facility. Through the application of the methodology, it has been possible to visualize that this facility is viable operationally (B_P = 42.94 €/ton) as economically (B_T = 87.73 €/ton).

Urban Municipal Solid Waste management: Modeling air pollution scenarios and health impacts in the case of Accra, Ghana

Despite the clear link between air pollution and health, research to investigate the relationship between municipal solid waste management and air pollution and health has not been prioritized. Such research may generate scientific information that would help reduce population exposure to air pollutants. This paper examines the case study of Accra in Ghana, a city dealing with serious waste management problems. The paper proposes a methodology to estimate the impact of waste management on urban air pollution and health. The analysis is described in the following four steps: (1) collecting data on the waste sector; (2) modeling the emissions arising from waste management; (3) transforming emissions to concentration values and (4) estimating the burdens on health. The assessment has been conducted using the CCAC SWEET tool and WHO AirQ+. The method presented can be used in different locations, depending on data availability, when analyzing the impact of and potential changes to waste sector policies. The results of this health impact assessment indicate that, based on the emissions of PM_2.5 from the waste sector in Accra, a change from the business-as-usual to more sustainable options would reduce air pollutants emissions and avert 120 premature deaths in 2030. Levels of air pollution in Accra are significant and interventions to reduce PM_2.5 exposure should be promoted. The detailed analysis of the current situation provides suggestions for waste management policies in terms of impacts on health and ideas to reconsider the waste policies in Accra.

Process-based VOCs source profiles and contributions to ozone formation and carcinogenic risk in a typical chemical synthesis pharmaceutical industry in China

The chemical synthesis pharmaceutical industry plays an important role in VOCs emissions from industrial sources, which has caused increasing concern. In this study, the process-based pollution characteristics of VOCs from the chemical synthesis pharmaceutical industry were investigated in the Yangtze River Delta, China. A total of 16 samples were collected from 12 process units (including 5 production lines and 2 postprocessing units) and 2 factory boundary sites. 116 VOCs species were analyzed and sorted into 6 classes, including alkanes, alkenes, acetylene, aromatics, halocarbons and oxygenated VOCs (OVOCs). The concentration of stack VOCs was 3.37 × 10⁴ μg·m^-3, while the concentration of fugitive VOCs from other process units ranged from 827 μg·m^-3 to 2.11 × 10⁴ μg·m^-3. Aromatics, halocarbons and OVOCs accounted for a relatively high proportion in all process units. Process-based source profiles of each process unit were compiled. Generally, toluene, dichloromethane, ethanol, methanol and acetone were the most abundant species in all process units. Furthermore, the process-based ozone formation potentials (OFPs) and carcinogenic risk potentials (CRPs) were calculated, suggesting that toluene, methanol, ethanol and m/p-xylene should be preferentially controlled to reduce the OFPs, while acetaldehyde and chloroform were the priority control species to reduce the CRPs. Further discussion showed that ambient VOCs pollution at the factory boundary was affected by both stack and fugitive sources from the production process. The source profiles built in this study are necessary addition to the current profiles and are a good reference to study VOCs emission characteristics from the perspective of the process procedure. The results obtained from this work provide a guidance for effective VOCs abatement strategies and further lay a foundation for related research on VOCs in the chemical synthesis pharmaceutical industry.

VOCs released from municipal solid waste at the initial decomposition stage: Emission characteristics and an odor impact assessment

The nuisance from odor caused by municipal solid waste (MSW) is resulting in a growing number of public complaints and concerns. Odor pollution occurs in the initial decomposition stage of MSW, including waste collection, transportation and early pre-treatment. Furthermore, decomposition takes place in waste facilities that are often close to living areas, which can result in odor impacts on local inhabitants. However, this aspect of odor impact from MSW has not been well studied. In the current study, lab-scale waste cells were designed to simulate MSW storage conditions in the early stage. The characteristics of VOCs emissions with different waste compositions were analyzed. The odor concentration (C_O, non-dimensional) method and odor intensity were used for the assessment of odor. Ethanol was the substance with highest emission rate. The release rate of VOCs increased with the growth easily biodegradable waste (EBW). VOCs emissions was reduced by 25% when the proportion of EBW decreased from 60% to 45%. Methyl sulfide, ethanol, dimethyl disulfide and ethyl acetate were identified as typical odorants. The EBW proportion in waste is the main factor significantly influencing odor pollution. The C_O was 244.51 for the 60% EBW condition, which was only 61.46 for 15% EBW condition. These study results provide important information for the implementation of a garbage sorting policy and the monitoring of odor pollution from waste management.

Health impact of odor from on-situ sewage sludge aerobic composting throughout different seasons and during anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment

Aerobic composting and anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment are two mainstream methods used to recycle and reclaim sewage sludge. However, during these sludge treatment processes, many odors are emitted that may cause severe emotional disturbance and health risks to those exposed. This study identified odor pollution (i.e. sensory influence, odor contribution, and human risks) from samples collected during sludge aerobic composting throughout different seasons as well as during anaerobic digestion with hydrolysis pretreatment. Odor intensity, odor active values, and permissible concentration-time weighted averages for ammonia and five volatile sulfur compounds were assessed. The results revealed serious odor pollution from all sampling sites during aerobic composting, especially in winter. Excessively strong odors were identified in the composting workshop, with total odor active values between 997 and 8980 which accounted for 78.45%-96.18% of the total sludge aerobic composting plant. Levels of ammonia and dimethyl disulfide in the ambient air were high enough to harm employees' health. During anaerobic digestion, excessively strong odors were identified in dehydration workshop 2, and the total odor active values of six odors reached 32,268, with ammonia and hydrogen sulfide levels significant enough to harm human health.

Emission of volatile organic compounds from a small-scale municipal solid waste transfer station: Ozone-formation potential and health risk assessment

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the main precursors of tropospheric ozone and secondary aerosol generation, posing a threat to human health and affecting the environmental climate. A large quantity of VOCs can be produced in the initial decomposition stage of municipal solid waste (MSW). In this study, the atmosphere in an MSW transfer station was monitored for one year. The emission characteristics of VOCs in different seasons and working hours were analyzed, and the ozone-formation potential of VOCs was calculated through the maximum incremental reaction method, and health risks posed by the VOCs in the MSW transfer station were assessed. The results showed that the highest concentration of VOCs appeared in spring and summer, accounting for 70.6% and 26.6% of total VOCs (TVOCs) in peak working periods, respectively. Oxygenated compounds and terpenes contributed most to ozone formation, accounting for 41.0% and 50.6% of total ozone formation, respectively. The carcinogenic risks were above the safe threshold, labeled "probable risks". Tetrachloroethylene and 1,2-dichloroethane were the main contributors to carcinogenic risks. The mean non-carcinogenic risks were within the safe threshold in the MSW transfer station. From the perspective of protecting human health and ecological environmental safety, VOC control needs to be further strengthened in the transfer station.

Effect of source-classified and mixed collection from residential household waste bins on the emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds

The implementation of domestic waste classification following the principles of reduction, recycling, and harmlessness is an effective method to improve the urban and rural environments and to promote resource recycling. However, in many developing countries, the community residents lack awareness of the benefits of classified collection, which leads to a lack of initiative to classify MSW. To make the people realize the importance of MSW classification and increase the classification dynamics, Suzhou, China was taken as an example in this study, and residential areas were selected as sampling sites for classified and mixed collection of domestic waste. The main components of the odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the dustbins via different disposal modes were determined by sampling in spring, summer, autumn, and winter. In addition, the ozone formation potential (OFP) and human health risk assessment of the VOCs were analyzed. Halogenated compounds were the major pollutants from the household waste dustbins of the residential areas. However, aromatic compounds contributed the most to the OFP of the VOCs. The OFP of VOCs reached the highest peak in summer, which was 1.02 × 10³ μg/m³. Furthermore, more attention needs to be paid in classifying waste to reduce the concentration of OFP. Although there was a carcinogenic risk in spring and summer, it declined after waste classification. Compared with mixed collection, the source-classified collection of garbage had advantages in terms of controlling the emission of VOCs, ozone formation potential, and human health risk. These results could provide the evidence demonstrating the advantages of waste classification and attract people's attention. Furthermore, the results can also provide impetus to those countries, where separate collection of waste has not yet been implemented, to improve the enthusiasm for classification and the integrity of waste classification system. Residents should be encouraged to classify household waste in residential areas.

Emission characteristics and health risk assessment of VOCs from a food waste anaerobic digestion plant: A case study of Suzhou, China

The process of anaerobic digestion in food waste treatment plants generates a large amount of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Long-term exposure to this exhaust gas can pose a threat to the health of workers and people living nearby. In this study, VOCs emitted from different working units in a food waste anaerobic digestion plant were monitored for a year. Variations in VOCs emitted from each unit were analyzed and a health risk assessment was conducted for each working unit. The results show that the concentration of VOCs in different units varied greatly. The highest cumulative concentration of VOCs appeared in the hydrothermal hydrolysis unit (3.49 × 10⁴ μg/m³), followed by the sorting/crushing room (8.97 × 10³ μg/m³), anaerobic digestion unit (6.21 × 10² μg/m³), and biogas production unit (2.01 × 10² μg/m³). Oxygenated compounds and terpenes were the major components of the emitted VOCs, accounting for more than 98% of total VOC emissions. The carcinogenic risk in the plant exceeded the safety threshold (ILCR<1 × 10^-6), while the non-carcinogenic risk was within the acceptable range (HI < 1). The carcinogenic risk from the hydrothermal hydrolysis unit was the highest, reaching 4.4 × 10^-5, and was labeled as "probable risk." The carcinogenic risk at the plant boundary was 1.2 × 10^-5, indicating exhaust gases can cause a health threat to neighbors. Therefore, management VOCs in anaerobic digestion plants should receive more attention, and employees should minimize the time they spend in the hydrothermal hydrolysis unit.

Response of bamboo biochar amendment on volatile fatty acids accumulation reduction and humification during chicken manure composting

Present study was focused on to evaluate the effectiveness of increasing bamboo biochar (BB) (0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%) amendment on volatile fatty acids (VFAs) degradation and humification, as well as correlation with interrelated physicochemical parameters during chicken manure (CM) composting. The results showed that the extended thermophilic period and higher humic acid/fulvic acid ratio as well as richness bacteria community during CM composting. In addition, lower quantities of VFAs and odor generation with elevated biochar concentration. Redundancy analysis also supported that 10% BB has strong correlation with physicochemical parameters than other treatments. Overall, the 10% BB amendment could stimulate microbial activities to accelerate the organic waste degradation, reduced VFAs and odor emission so that improve hygiene and end product quality. It is notably assessed that application of 10% BB additive were optimal feasible and effectively channel for disposal of manure.

Emission profiles, ozone formation potential and health-risk assessment of volatile organic compounds in rubber footwear industries in China

The emission characteristics of VOCs in the rubber footwear industry (RFI) and its effect on human health are poorly understood to date. Herein, up to 68 VOCs, sorted into seven classes including alkanes, alkenes, acetylene, aromatics, halocarbons, carbon disulfide, and oxygenated VOCs, were monitored. VOCs emitted from three main processing stages of RFI, including shaping, painting and vulcanizing, were 383, 1507 and 1026 mg/m³, respectively. The top 10 VOCs contributing to the concentration and ozone formation potential were identified. Generally, alkanes were the major component emitted from three stages, contributing 48.58%-63.07% of the total VOCs. Alkenes contributed most to the OFP, accounting for 37.2%-69.1%. Based on the risk assessment, a definite cancer risk for workers in shaping workshop should be noticed. Several VOCs with a life carcinogenic risk higher than 10^-4, especially benzene, bromodichloromethane, ethylbenzene and 1,1,2-trichloroethane, should be focused on. Therefore, more attention should be taken for the extended-ranges of VOCs in subordinate RFI, except for the publicly concerned aromatics in rubber industry. A VOCs emission inventory from the production process of Chinese RFI in 2000-2016 was compiled. It is estimated that Chinese RFIs have emitted a total of 319 × 10⁴ t VOCs in those past 17 years.

Evaluation of Health Hazard Due to Emission of Volatile Organic Compounds from Various Processing Units of Wastewater Treatment Plant

The paper describes an attempt at health risk assessment and odour concentration determination in the most important units of a wastewater treatment plant. The cancer risk (CR) and hazard index (HI) parameters in selected measurement locations were calculated based on the results of chromatographic analyses (GCxGC-TOF-MS) and the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) guidelines. No exceedance of the CR and HI acceptable levels was observed for identified and quantitatively determined compounds from the VOCs group. The acceptable level was exceeded for the summary HI parameter. Following a classification of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), it was noticed that the highest hazard was connected to the presence of formaldehyde belonging to group 1—the compounds regarded as carcinogenic. Based on the olfactometric analyses, it was estimated that the highest odour concentration, 37.2 ou/m³, occurred at the solid waste composting piles. It was also revealed that an increase in odour concentration corresponded to a higher health risk for employees of the wastewater treatment plant, due to exposure to volatile odorous compounds. Accordingly, this method of odour measurement can be a fast indicator describing health risk level.

Emission characteristics of VOCs and potential ozone formation from a full-scale sewage sludge composting plant

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are the major components of the odor emitted from sewage sludge composting plants and are generally associated with odorous nuisances and health risks. However, few studies have considered the potential ozone generation caused by VOCs emitted from sewage sludge composting plants. This study investigated the VOC emissions from a full-scale composting plant. Five major treatment units of the composting plant were chosen as the monitoring locations, including the dewatered room, dewatered sludge, blender room, fermentation workshop, and product units. The fermentation workshop units displayed the highest concentration of VOC emissions at 2595.7 ± 1367.3 μg.m^-3, followed by the blender room, product, dewatered sludge, and dewatered room units, whose emissions ranged from 142.2 ± 86.8 μg.m^-3 to 2107.6 ± 1045.6 μg.m^-3. The detected VOC families included oxygenated compounds, alkanes, alkenes, sulfide compounds, halogenated compounds, and aromatic compounds. Oxygenated compounds, particularly acetone, were the most abundant compounds in all samples. Principal component analysis revealed that the dewatered room and dewatered sludge units clustered closely, as indicated by their similar component emissions. The product units differed from the other sampling units, as their typical compounds were methanethiol, styrene, carbon disulfide, and hexane, all of which were the products of the latter stages of composting. Among the treatment units, the fermentation workshop units had the highest propylene equivalent (propy-equiv) concentration. Dimethyl disulfide and limonene were the major contributors. Limonene had the highest propy-equiv concentration, which contributed to the increased atmospheric reactivity and ozone formation potential in the surrounding air. To control the secondary environmental pollution caused by the VOC emissions during sewage sludge composting, the emission of limonene and dimethyl disulfide must be controlled from the blender room and fermentation workshop units.

Statistical correlations on the emissions of volatile odorous compounds from the transfer stage of municipal solid waste

Odor pollution from treatment facilities and municipal solid waste (MSW) has caused wide public concern. Odorous compounds released from these facilities possess complex composition. Therefore, identifying typical odorous compounds and using their release rates to estimate those of other compounds may simplify the monitoring and evaluation of odor pollution. This study investigates the correlations of the release data of odorous compounds from a statistical perspective. For 12 months, we conducted in site monitoring in an MSW transfer station once each month to obtain 96 emission samples, and over 100 odorous compounds were quantified for each sample. Oxygenated compounds had considerable high release rates throughout the period, and ethanol was the dominant compound. Ethanol, dimethyl disulfide and methyl mercaptan were the top key compounds that contributed to the odor activity value. Correlation analyses within and across the categories showed that only a few compounds in saturated hydrocarbons and aromatic compounds had strong correlations with release rate. The coefficient of correlation between ethylbenzene and 19 other compounds, which covered only 25% of all the identified compounds in this study, was >0.5. These results show that representative compounds cannot be used in the calculation of release rate during the transfer stage.
